  Directly post graduation from University, I decided to build my own web app (Ease My Day) while waiting to get a job as a software Engineer. The reasons to build this app: Gain solid hands on software experience before hitting the job scene Providing a solution to a common problem Not sitting doing nothing while searching for jobs The app is Not an entrepreneurial tryout nor a business to be sold. Still throughout interviews I noticed that at the rate of 4 of each 5 interviews I pass through the app is being confused with a business and I am asked the same questions: Why did you build the business? Why do you want to stop the app? Do you want to sell the app? Knowing that I didn't build a business nor make any income from this application. Do candidates who take initiatives and like to craft their own apps on the side cause a red flag on the hiring manager's radar?

• Is it better to cut and store all sprites needed from a spritesheet in memory, or cut them out just-in-time?

  I'm not sure what's best practice here as I have little experience with this. Essentially what I am asking is... if it's better to get your single PNG with all your different sprites on it for use in-game, cut out every sprite on startup and store them in memory, then access the already-cut-out sprite from memory quickly or Only have the single PNG with all the different sprites residing in memory, and when you need, for example, a tree. You cut out the tree from the PNG and then continue to use it as normal. I imagine the former is more CPU friendly than the latter but less memory friendly, vice versa for the latter. I want to know what the norm is for game dev. This is a pixel based game using 2D art. Each PNG is actually an avatar's sprite sheet with each body part separated and then later joined to form the full body of the avatar.

• FatCow and iPage real deal?

  I need a cheap host that I can upgrade if needed for a startup. From searching, FatCow and iPage seem reliable and inexpensive web hosting services with a Unix OS and good bandwidth + disk space. I suspect they were bought from the same company. They propose to offer unlimited bandwidth/disc space and perks like AdSense/Facebook credit however, they're packages range from 1-3 years @ 3.15 USD/mo, there isn't a monthly package but they do allow you to cancel at anytime and there servers run on wind-mill generated energy which is a plus. I was suspicious because I couldnt seem to find one negative review about them, just affiliate pages until I read a review explaining they're strict policies on copywritten data. Has anyone experience with one of these two hosts?

• 12.04 Screen goes OFF and ON and hangs

  i have installed ubuntu 12.04. while i'm using the screen goes off, comes back on (during which time, the system is not responsive) and this process repeats one more time in immediate succession after which the computer is responsive again. sometimes the system hangs indefinitely. sometimes the windows go blank. only the title bars are seen. i have tried re-installing the OS three times with no improvements. i have tried both 32 bit as well as 64 bit. i have no idea what the problem is and have tried hard to pin point that. i never had this prob till 11.10 my system config is as follow processor - 2nd gen intel core i7 (2660k) graphics - intel onboard HD graphics 3000 (no external graphics card) RAM - 4GB none of my friends seem to experience this problem. it really gets annoying as it happens really often. please advice

• Will search engines ever change to allow longer title and description tags? [closed]

  I was just wondering: The standard title length is 64 characters, while meta description tags are 150-160. I was thinking, that it was probably done like that originally because of screen resolutions back in the day, that could not really fit a lot of content. Google still displays search results in a incredible small resolution fixed to the left side of the browser, and it's simplicity is probably what makes it so popular. With websites such as bing, displaying a richer more vivid search experience, in your opinion, will search engines ever change to accept better and longer meta description tags and titles? (I'm asking because we work to accommodate their standards, but what if they change?)

• Reputable web host in mainland China? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to find web hosting that meets my requirements? We currently have a rather poorly set up Windows 2003 box with little to no support based in Shanghai; with no control panel/mail server. I am told for legal/business reasons the host must be based in the same location as the company for the website; but this could well be misinformation. Are there any well-known, quality hosts in China that offer reliable English-speaking support? We did consider GoDaddy on the west coast of America, but were informed of the risk of the site being shut down without any notice. We don't have any technically-minded contacts out there to advise, and hoping that someone will have some more experience in this department. Thank you.

When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect).

• Programming language for simple program?

  I am wondering about which programming languages people see fit to create a program idea that I had. I am looking to create a fairly simple program whose main functions are adding to, managing, and searching through a database of people, all through a polished GUI. It will be for use in the business world, so I think Windows would be the priority, but Mac and Linux support wouldn't be bad. Also, eventually I would like to add the ability for an instance of one program on a computer to interact with other instances on the same network, mainly through the sharing of a database. Most of my experience is in Java, but I don't particularly like the appearance of Java GUIs, so I'm looking for an alternative. I noticed that a lot of people have suggested C++ or C# in similar posts, so what are some of the advantages/disadvantages of one or both if that is your suggestion. Thanks for any help in advance.

  I have made some research and found that bullet, ode, newton and some others are open source physics engines that should be portable enough (but I have never tried to comile/use anyone of them on phones). I am writing my games for mobile platforms in C++, so the engine should be C or C++. I need a fast engine, since mobile platforms have limited resources. I need a free engine. A good design would be nice to have too. What engine is best suited for my task? What I really would like to hear from you is your direct experience. Documentation and support (for example, forum or an IRC channel) is a really important aspect to take into consideration.

  I have almost six years of experience in java. I have developed many projects which used frameworks like Struts, Spring, Hibernate, JQuery , DWR, Ajax etc. I have used these technologies in almost all the projects I have worked on. Projects were very simple mostly with crud based apps. My everyday tasks involves creating few screens, writing queries, testing etc. After all these years I feel like I have turned into an API programmer who just uses these above mentioned frameworks which is not giving me any satisfaction of being a programmer.   When your SharePoint Solution package include third party or external dlls , you will often see your solution fail to deploy due to the locking of the dlls. Today I will show you how to find which process locks your dlls using Process Explorer. 1. Here is an example that your solution fails to deploy due to dll being locked. 2. Start the explorer by double click the procexp.exe 3. From the find tab click Find Handle or DLL 4.Type the your dll name and click Search 5. I can see all the processes that use my dlls at the moment, it looks like the iis , visual studio and SharePoint timer services might be the trouble. From my experience , it could be Visual studio. 6. Close visual studio and redeploy my solution, it works like charm. Re-search the dll, you can see Visual studio is not in the results.

• Elantech trackpad being identified as a logitech wheel mouse

  I recently purchased a Samsung RF510 laptop computer, which I absolutely love. However, upon installing Ubuntu 10.10 onto it I couldn't get the trackpad to function properly. It worked as a basic mouse (point and click) but had no functionality for edge scrolling or any of the multitouch settings the trackpad is capable of. After doing a lot of research I discovered the reason is a known issue where the Ubuntu kernel will improperly detect an Elantech trackpad as a logitech PS/2 wheel mouse, and as such will gain none of the functionality that seems to be coded for synaptics trackpads. The question I have is: does anyone know a way to get this working properly? This is my first time trying to run Ubuntu on a laptop (actually, it's my first laptop in the last 12 years) and I'm finding the experience to be intolerable without the basic scrolling/zooming/etc I've been used to using for as long as I can remember.

  I am interested in how each individual smart phone is allowed to handle data transfers within a third-party app. I am interested in designing apps that allow customers to update, transfer, download, etc. data from their smart phone to their personal computer and vice-versa. (Ranging from just text, to XML, to a Relational Database) I only have experience with the Ipod Touch before and one particular app that maintained all the data on an online server, so to update the data on your pc or iphone you had to go online, are there other ways to do it? Like bluetooth, wireless LAN, USB, etc? I believe Apple has certain policies on this in order to control the App Store and individual Iphones. I suppose each company has a particular policy on how an app is allowed to transfer data to another system, does anyone have a good understanding of this? Thank you.

• How can I really master a programming language?

  I know that learning a language, you can simply buy a book, follow the examples, and whenever possible try the exercises. But what I'm really looking is how to master the language once you've learned it. Now I know that experience is one major factor, but what about learning the internals of the language, what is the underlying structure, etc. There are articles out there saying read this book, read that book, make this game and that game. But to me this doesn't mean to master a language. I want to be able to read other people's code and understand it, no matter how hard that is. To understand when to use a function and when another, etc etc. The list could go on and on but I believe I've made the point. :) And finally, take whatever language as an example if needed, though best would be if C was taken as an example.

  This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it.  The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible.  This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies.  To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community.  This includes both members of my local Midwest community and the global communities that I have only had online connections with.  Sharing the experience and getting a chance to exchange ideas with new and old friends is a great part of any convention.   Possible Duplicate: Explaining interfaces to beginning programmers? I searched on stackoverflow and here for a good example to teach java interfaces in a beginners class. I found the following post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/416331/java-interfaces The Official Java-Tutorial and the references feature examples that are quite good but I would need a very simple example to start with for my class. I don't think the offical tutorial is the best resource for absolute beginners. The students are easily confused, and the most effective example would help. Any pointers or experience in teaching java interfaces?

• Kindle for PC via Wine

  I've been checking out all the free books on Amazon and I really want to get the Kindle PC program running on my computer so I can download, read, and manage my e-books. I realize that Calibre can be used to manage e-books and I do have that downloaded. However, Amazon won't let me download ebooks unless my PC is registered in their little Kindle program and I'd like to just keep things streamlined by playing by the rules for once. I've viewed so many tutorials and advice for setting it up. I have Wine, I have Kindle for PC, I set it to Win98, all of that. However, when I try to open KindlePC from the Wine menu or from the desktop icon, nothing happens. No error messages, nothing. I don't know what might be wrong. Please let me know if you have any experience with this and any suggestions!
