  • Synergy on Mac OS X 10.7

    - by matt
Unfortunately, I can't seem to get Synergy to work between two Mac clients both using 10.7. One is an older 21" iMac and the other is a new 2011 Macbook Air. Here's my synergy.conf, symlinked to my home directory as ~/.synergy.conf section: screens foo: bar: super = alt alt = super end section: links foo: right = bar bar: left = foo end That is, I thought the super = alt trick was mandatory in order to have alt work on Mac but unfortunately, nothing really works. Both the Command and Control keys do NOT work on bar but work fine on foo given that the keyboard is paired with that screen. The keyboard modifier keys are the same on both computers and the making the mouse go between screens works as well. I was wondering if anyone else had any success or problems running into this issue on 10.7 and was hoping there was a possible fix.

  • zip being too nice (Mac OS X)

    - by stib
I use zip to do a regular backup of a local directory onto a remote machine. They don't believe in things like rsync here, so it's the best I can do (?). Here's the script I use echo $(date)>>~/backuplog.txt; if [[ -e /Volumes/backup/ ]]; then cd /Volumes/Non-RAID_Storage/; for file in projects/*; do nice -n 10 zip -vru9 /Volumes/backup/nonRaidStorage.backup.zip "$file" 2>&1 | grep -v "zip info: local extra (21 bytes)">>~/backuplog.txt; done; else echo "backup volume not mounted">>~/backuplog.txt; fi This all works fine, except that zip never uses much CPU, so it seems to be taking longer than it should. It never seems to get above 5%. I tried making it nice -20 but that didn't make any difference. Is it just the network or disc speeds bottlenecking the process or am I doing something wrong?

  • What's the easiest way to migrate one Mac OS X volume to another

    - by teabot
I want to move a volume from a smaller drive to a larger unformatted one. What is the best way to achieve this? Ideally I'd like the new volume to have the same name as the older volume as it contains user accounts, and is a destination of various symlinks that I have on other volumes. Update: I used Carbon Copy Cloner in the end and it worked perfectly. I was able to simply rename the new volume in Finder to the same name as the old volume and then powered down and removed the old drive on which the volume lived. When I restarted, the new volume seamlessly worked in place of the old volume.

  • Finding source of leaking active memory on Mac OS Lion

    - by Tim Kemp
My activity monitor shows 6GB of active RAM usage: Yet my Real Memory column shows nothing like that amount: (There's another screenful below that, all smaller.) Backing that up, the output from this command (which sums up memory usage of every running process): ps -axm -o "rss, comm" | awk 'BEGIN { s=0;}; {s=s+$1;}; END { printf("%.2f GB\n", (s/1024.0/1024));}' Gives 4.09GB, so it looks to me like 2GB has leaked. I see much wider ranges sometimes, perhaps 2 or 3GB from the ps command and as much as 7 or 8GB of Active usage reported by Activity Monitor. I've tried quitting everything and logging my user out and back in again, but the Active usage is still far higher than the RAM reported by ps and by each process to Activity Monitor. This 2GB of active RAM is basically unrecoverable unless I reboot. Is there any way to a) detect what's leaking and b) get it back? Thanks

  • How do I delete a route in OS X 10.5

    - by authormichael-olsen-craig
I somehow configured my Mac to route all requests for a particular IP Name (sample.com) to the loopback address (127.0.0.1). Now I'm trying to remove this, but can't determine where to do it. There is no entry for it under /etc/hosts. The routing table shows that it is mapping the IP Name to the IP address of the Mac. Routing table output below: Internet: Destination Gateway Flags Refs Use Netif Expire default 192.168.2.1 UGSc 4 1 en0 127 sample.com UCS 0 0 lo0 sample.com sample.com UH 1 7093 lo0 169.254 link#4 UCS 0 0 en0 192.168.2 link#4 UCS 6 0 en0 192.168.2.1 0:11:22:22:3f:fa UHLW 20 55565 en0 1070 192.168.2.15 tsema.org UHS 0 9 lo0 192.168.2.255 link#4 UHLWb 4 84777 en0 Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • Stream video from one app to another in OS X (Software video input device)

    - by Josh
Is there any way to take a video stream from one application, for example VLC Media Player, and present that video stream to other applications as a video input source? For example, could I broadcast a video file from my hard disk to a website that allows video conferencing using a Flash applet? Basically, I'm looking for something like Soundflower, but for video streams. Is this possible?

  • Easy_install the wrong version of python modules (Mac OS)

    - by user73250
I installed Python 2.7 on my Mac. When typing "python" in terminal, it shows: $ python Python 2.7 (r27:82508, Jul 3 2010, 20:17:05) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5493)] on darwin Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. The Python version is correct here. But when I try to easy_install some modules. The system will install the modules with python version 2.6 which are not able be imported to Python 2.7. And of course I can not do the functions I need in my code. Here's an example of easy_install graphy: $ easy_install graphy Searching for graphy Reading pypi.python.org/simple/graphy/ Reading http://code.Google.com/p/graphy/ Best match: Graphy 1.0.0 Downloading http://pypi.python.org/packages/source/G/Graphy/Graphy- 1.0.0.tar.gz#md5=390b4f9194d81d0590abac90c8b717e0 Processing Graphy-1.0.0.tar.gz Running Graphy-1.0.0/setup.py -q bdist_egg --dist-dir /var/folders/fH/fHwdy4WtHZOBytkg1nOv9E+++TI/-Tmp-/easy_install-cFL53r/Graphy-1.0.0/egg-dist-tmp-YtDCZU warning: no files found matching '*.tmpl' under directory 'graphy' warning: no files found matching '*.txt' under directory 'graphy' warning: no files found matching '*.h' under directory 'graphy' warning: no previously-included files matching '*.pyc' found under directory '.' warning: no previously-included files matching '*~' found under directory '.' warning: no previously-included files matching '*.aux' found under directory '.' zip_safe flag not set; analyzing archive contents... graphy.all_tests: module references __file__ Adding Graphy 1.0.0 to easy-install.pth file Installed /Library/Python/2.6/site-packages/Graphy-1.0.0-py2.6.egg Processing dependencies for graphy Finished processing dependencies for graphy So it installs graphy for Python 2.6. Can someone help me with it? I just want to set my default easy_install Python version to 2.7.

  • Bulk "open with" change on OS X 10.6

    - by railmeat
I use Microsoft remote desktop to connect from my mac to the windows machine I work on. I have a directory with about 50 different rdp files. (The config files for each machine). They go changed to open with the remote desktop in Windows XP on Parallels. Is there a command I can use to change all those back to opening with the remote desktop on my Mac? I can use the right mouse click "Always open with" command, or the equivalent on the "Get Info" menu, but I would like to find a way to make that change in bulk. "Change All..." button on the "Get Info" menu does not have any effect.

  • OS X mavericks latex issue

    - by Vineet Bafna
I upgraded to Mavericks and found that pdflatex stopped working. I followed some previous discussions to recreate a link that Mavericks had broken. sudo ln -fs /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/Programs/texbin texbin The error message changed to "Permission denied". I tried to change permissions, but it does not work. Please see below. /usr 65: sudo ln -fs /Library/TeX/Distributions/.DefaultTeX/Contents/Programs/texbin texbin /usr 66: ls -l texbin ls: texbin: Permission denied lrwx------ 1 root wheel 63 Aug 21 08:42 texbin /usr 67: chmod 755 texbin /usr 68: ls -l texbin ls: texbin: Permission denied lrwx------ 1 root wheel 63 Aug 21 08:42 texbin /usr 69:

  • Mac OS X: at command not working

    - by David.Chu.ca
I am going to schedule a job by using at command. Here I tried the following command: $ at now + 1 minute echo 'Test at command' <EOD> I saw the job is scheduled by using at -l. However, I saw no echo out. I guess that I may need to add user to at.allow file. I cannot find at.allow in my Mac (Snow Leopard). Not sure what I need to do to test this at command?

  • How to boot Linux and Windows - Windows as Default OS

    - by lions_leash
I have a dual boot system that works great. I have Ubuntu and XP 64 on one disk and XP on another disk. The Linux boot loader asks me which system to boot, but if I reboot and forget to hit a button, it goes to Linux by default. I would like to boot to XP by default, but somehow retain the option of choosing.

  • Photo Management Software for OS X That Supports Multiple Library Locations

    - by Lance Rushing
I'm looking at the possibility of changing our photo management software. Thinking about Aperture or Lightroom. And want to know if either supports: Having folders/libraries on separate harddrives/Volumes. Tolerates having network folders occasionally connected Snappy interface A solid enough piece of software as not to crash or behave weirdly. [ so the wife doesn't get stuck and have to call me ;) ] Background The wife is photographer and I'm the computer programmer. Our current setup is Picasa, with a "Recent/Working" folder on the local iMac harddrive, and "Archive" folders on NFS mounted Linux Server, Raid 5, for redundant and extra storage capacity. (the Linux server also syncs with Amazon's EC2) Picasa is doing OK, but I get annoyed when it doesn't do behave properly. Usually around issues when the Linux disk isn't mounted. And overall, I wish Picasa seemed a little more polished and snappier. Thanks, Lance

  • How can I easily identify all keyboard shortcuts (hotkeys) on OS X and current running Applications

    - by Michael Prescott
By default, the function keys on my MacBook Pro control various hardware features and native operating system applications like the brightness of the LCD, Expose, or iTunes. I like these buttons and can use the fn button to take advantage of application Function keys when working with certain applications. Some service-type, background applications also have useful keyboard shortcuts. I tend to forget which keys are active at the moment and sometimes launch the wrong processes. Is there an application or operating system, native way of identifying all of the currently available keyboard shortcuts?

  • Gitosis on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard)

    - by Shyam
Hi, I have a Snow Leopard box, where I have gitosis installed (Warning: noob alert), added a git user and I am able to remotely login to the machine with ssh. Locally, I can 'clone' my created repositories, as I can 'clone' the gitosis-admin too. Works perfect. I clone these using the 'git' user. git clone git@my-remote-machine:reponame.git remotely logged in, what doesn't work: git clone git@localhost:reponame.git However on that same remote machine where the repositories live, I can't clone from the localhost. It asks for a password, which wasn't created as far as I know. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your replies!
