• Installed Sun Java 6 - configuration problem when running as sudo

  I have install Sun Java 6 on an Ubuntu server and set an environment variable in the default profile as per the instructions at http://www.edugate.ie/workshop-guides/shibboleth-2-identity-provider-installation-linux-debian-or-ubuntu I then try to run an installer for a Java servlet - but when I run it as myself, it cannot create the required directory in /opt. When I run it as sudo, I am told that JAVA_HOME is not correct and it doesn't even start the installer - shouldn't this be coming from /etc/profile like it is for my normal user?

• Gnome Shell has turned into Gnome Classic (no effects) after installing fglrx.

  For some reason, I can't get Gnome Shell working after installing fglrx. When I select Gnome Shell in the profile, it just goes to Gnome Classic (No effects). A few other issues: GDM has turned into something that looks a lot more fancy (not sure what it is) Selecting System Default in the profile section just gives me a blank screen (not Unity) When I drag a window around I get laggy windows-esque shadows Oh and I'm on Ubuntu 12.10 with an AMD Radeon HD 6540 G2 graphics card

• Flash is not working in Chrome

  I have google Chrome 8.0.552.237 on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit and flash is not working, I have tried a variety of methods to install flash, including Firefox flash-aid and the flash-installer package and nothing is working for me. I have even uninstalled and reinstalled chrome to no avail. I get "missing plugin" message where flash plugin should be in a website. What am I missing? UPDATE I have a variety of plugins returned by jgbelacqua's command: /usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so /usr/lib/iceape/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/midbrowser/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/xulrunner/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins/flashplugin-alternative.so /usr/share/ubufox/plugins/libflashplayer.so /var/cache/flashplugin-installer/libflashplayer.so I'm not sure which is necessary and which not. • Custom Xsession with Gnome visuals

  I'm trying to create a kiosk PC only for web browsing using this tutorial as a reference (only difference - I'm using Firefox instead of Chromium) It is working correctly in principle (only FF window opens when I log in using the Kiosk session) but it looks, well, super ugly. The scrollbar and right-click context menus look like from the 1990s - gray and boxy. How could I modify the session to get Gnome-like scrollbars/menus without the whole Gnome desktop (top/bottom panel etc)?   I have run update-alternatives as well as gnome preffered apps selection thing. And all point to have chromium browser as default. Yet when I run xdg-open http://askubuntu.com firefox is launched! Similarly emacs and bzr also launch stuff in firefox instead of chromium. Are there any additional settings which affect xdg-open functionality? Something is definatly broken: UPDATE I have purged firefox: update-alternatives - uses chromium browser sensible-browser - opens chromium browser xdg-open & gnome-open - opens using google-chrome which kindly tells me "it's not default browser" !!!!

• Packages don't show up after adding ppa

  I added ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-daily/ppa/firefox-aurora/ubuntu oneiric and ppa:banshee-team/ppa/ubuntu oneiric to my software sources, then did apt-get update. However, after selecting their specific sources from the menu in Software Center, the only packages available are language packs and extensions for Banshee and firefox-aurora. I had already uninstalled Banshee and Firefox. If I try and install Banshee/Aurora with sudo apt-get it will install the old version. Searching for Banshee/Aurora in Software Center only shows the old version. I'm guessing the packages in the PPAs conflict with the packages in the main sources. How do I install the newer versions?

  After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10 I was not able to access the Internet on any program that required it.   In the past, when I implemented shortcuts for web applications, I used different ones for different browsers: for example Ctrl+Shift+A was used in Chrome, but would be something else, like Ctrl+Shift+C in Firefox, since Firefox reserves the Ctrl+Shift+A shortcut for add-ons. Actually, I have a project where it would be nice to have the same shortcuts for every browser. Is there a list of shortcuts which are not reserved in any major browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE and Opera) or do I have to do my own by listing? Google wasn't helpful, since it rather shows the list of shortcuts which are common to all major browsers.

Chrome and Firefox both update themselves and say user restart to enjoy another good version. in IE6 a big problem is that updates. no one sure that they installed new version of IE6 without any hassles and update goes install without any problem because they really know or care about “you need this to install this and this for this” so they thing “why I update IE whenever I am unsure that my browser goes update and I have no problem again” so they do nothing because their work done with no problem because common person used high profile application who work even in IE6. so they do nothing.    IE6 countdown website have designed a banner for warn or force user to upgrade to next version of IE. well there is no good reason for put the banner on website some of reason are:-   Windows 7 comes with pre-installed IE8 and Vista comes with upgrade version them IE6 so that is sure that you force a user who have Windows XP [luna] and if they want to upgrade IE then they can get IE8 not version 9 because IE9 is design for Windows 7 or Vista Service pack 2. so What is the use of update when user still have a outdate version too because IE8 is old version and not have any capability of HTML5 so forcing user by using the banner have no sense. I am not know why they all listed on website put the banner on their own website. it’s good that you offer user what they want instead of giving them a outdate version of IE again. My means to give a user list of browser they can try to enhance their browser experience instead of only IE.   IE9 build upon WPF and they spent more time on using WPF in IE instead of making user experience browser.  many thing is designed wrongly in IE first thing is tabs. the tabs in chrome are bigger and easily to move and same in Firefox even not have smooth tabbing. IE have same tabbing as chrome have but leak a point that it’s too small. if you really  want to move then sometime they create a problem that they going elsewhere from the current instance of IE.   Chrome have a big buttons, tabs and menu to enhance browser experience and Firefox have a good feature that you can make them bigger or small. you can put the icon for add-ons on the toolbar for easily use but IE have no relation with customization so we never can thinking about that.   When chrome provide lot’s of extensions and a  webstore for browser application and same feature in Firefox can be seen then there is no plugin in IE. really you can see their IE addons Website where no plugin listed for web development. even in the category or tag. as a response from many blog there is new for developer that new version of IE9 developer tool. well IE9 have three new tabs a blogger tell on their blog. when I trying them I found many thing but I still unable to edit the Css from the HTML tab and no plugin I found I can get to enhance IE9 web development. something more other provide never IE9 give me like personas , customization , browser extension or any other they used to tell a small thing customization  .   IE9 still have some problem with JavaScript that when I use Firefox and chrome and logout in both then my cookie is deleted but in IE it’s not done. it’s show me that IE9 still have different from other not for good thing even some bad thing too. When I trying to read a article that is written in Hindi using Unicode font I found that they show many thing misspelled. there is three Sha in Hindi but they all goes wrong in IE. the misprint thing is not that the writing  for the articles goes wrong. it’s problem or browser to rendering a font. the Firefox and chrome not give me this problem even opera render the font in italic style by decrease the font-size but all those work perfect.   in Pwn2Own the apple’s safari  and IE9 both are hacked. this is a awesome news for whose who thing that  open-source is lose in  Security and close-source is highly-secured software. well this is not a good parameter for talking about software. it’s should depend how much application tested and used. because more testing and more use of application make them better.   I  appreciate IE to making their new version 9 and good luck for them. there is a another matter that I personally found nothing on them.

  I'm using XFCE on a dual monitor setup, with Xorg configured to separate X screens (neither twinview nor cinerama is working on GF470 with latest nvidia drivers). I'm not using xrandr. Suppose I have firefox running on one screen (:0.0) and thunderbird on the other (:0.1). When I want to switch focus from thunderbird to firefox, I need to move my mouse pointer to the firefox window and click (alt-tab switches between windows on a single screen only). Is there any keyboard shortcut for switching focus between screens?

• Clicking on active apps on unity launcher stopped working

  I don't know how it suddenly became this but here's what's happening right now: e.g. I have 2 firefox windows open, so I see 2 small arrows on the left side icon of the unity launcher. Before, when I click on the firefox icon, I see 2 small windows of the firefox so I can choose which one. Now it suddenly stopped working. (super+W still works though). The bug on my system applies to all progams with multiple window instances like nautilus, terminal, etc. Please help, I don't know what to do. I also have cairo dock, compiz, myunity installed in my 12.04. I tried searching online to no avail.

To solve this problem, I tried: galternatives the "default apps" under settings and sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser Neither of these worked. Does anybody have an alternative solution for this? -- Solution: I used the "sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.list" tip from ??? and searched for firefox in the whole document! Everytime I found "firefox" I replaced it with "google-chrome.desktop". I also used the "default apps" menu to change it to google-chrome. And now it works.. I hope it helps some other ;-)

To say things mechanically: The page has a certain height. In Firefox, the useful object is document.documentElement.scrollHeight. The browser's visible area also has a certain height. In Firefox, the object is window.innerHeight; in IE8, document.documentElement.clientHeight. I need to know where the user is in the page vertically; in other words, how many pixels down the page the user has scrolled. Does Webkit have a DOM object that refers to the current scroll position?
