• Connection timed out on Node.js app running under CentOS

I tried the same app.js code which runs fine on my local machine, is there anything I am missing? I tried to ping the server and its address was reachable. Thanks.

• IP to IP forwarding with iptables [centos]

  I have 2 servers. Server 1 with ip 1.1.1.1 and server 2 with ip 2.2.2.2 My domain example.com points to 1.1.1.1 at the moment, but very soon I'm going to switch to ip 2.2.2.2. I have already setup a low TTL for domain example.com, but some people will still hit the old ip a after I change the ip address of the domain. Now both machines run centos 5.8 with iptables and nginx as a webserver. I want to forward all traffic that still hits server 1.1.1.1 to 2.2.2.2 so there won't be any downtime. Now I found this tutorial: http://www.debuntu.org/how-to-redirecting-network-traffic-a-new-ip-using-iptables but I cannot seem to get it working. I have enabled ip forwarding: echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward After that I ran these 2 commands: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -s 1.1.1.1 -p tcp --dport 80 -j DNAT --to-destination 2.2.2.2:80 /sbin/iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -j MASQUERADE But when I load http://1.1.1.1 in my browser, I still get the pages hosted on 1.1.1.1 and not the content from 2.2.2.2. What am I doing wrong?

• Apache and MySQL not working well after extending filesystem

  I had 4Gb on my /var (/dev/mapper/vg00-var) filesystem, and I wanted to extend it to 160Gb. I think this is because /var contains the htdocs The worst part is, mysql is not starting at all.   I like making music and playing games and occasionally do some Photoshop. I had a windows 8 computer but my mouse pointer always got stuck, so to try out something new I installed Ubuntu. here is how I installed it: Went to advanced statup options clicked on "use a device" after plugging in my bootable USB with Ubuntu replaced my windows 8 and installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS I hope I did it correctly though. So after a few months I could've really find out a good Audio Production (not LMMS, because I use Stagelight) software nor something that could be familiar to the UI of Photoshop. So I decided to bring back Windows, but because of the bad experience of 8 I thought about bringing back win 7 So I used an app named WinUSB to make my bootable USB drive after formatting it to NTFS in GParted But when I go to my grub menu, my USB doesn't show up and my PC being a UEFI device. I don't know how to get to the bios of my device. Can somebody tell how to install Windows 7 completely and deleting Ubuntu or at least give me a link to a tutorial. I have a netbook: it is an Acer Aspire One 725. I'm fine with using commands in terminal and another thing that my laptop doesn't have a CD drive or reader, I can't put a CD inside

• lighttpd on Fedora permission issues

  I'm trying to get started with lighttpd on Fedora 16 to run a RESTful api for development. Right now even with the most basic sample config file I'm getting 404 pages when I know the pages I'm pointing at exist. From reading other questions I'm leaning towards this being a permissions issue, but I'm confused about how lighttpd runs on Fedora. There's a user called "lighttpd" not "www-data"? I can't see this user in the system-config-users tool and I can't su into it to check which permissions it has. I'm trying to point lighttpd to "/var/www/lighttpd" which has some example pages in it. The permissions for the files inside are set to -rw-r--r-- and the permissions for the folder containing them are drwxr-xr-x. Doesn't that mean that any user can view these files? I'm not sure what else I should be checking as I don't have much experience with server configuration. Any help would be appreciated. Edit: I was following the tutorial configuration here so the lighttpd.conf file contains server.document-root = "/var/www/lighttpd/" server.port = 3000 mimetype.assign = ( ".html" => "text/html", ".txt" => "text/plain", ".jpg" => "image/jpeg", ".png" => "image/png" ) and I was just trying to get the basic example page working.

  I am not yet a true "Linux guy" and I have the following doubts about how exactly do the following shell procedure (a list of commands steps) founded in a tutorial that I am following (I want deeply understand what I am doing before do it): sudo passwd root then login again as root usermod -l miner pi usermod -m -d /home/miner miner groupmod -n miner pi exit So at the beginning it enable the root account and I have to login again in the system as root...this is perfectly clear for me. And now I have the followings doubts: 1) The usermod command: usermod -l miner pi usermod -m -d /home/miner miner Reading the official documentation of the usermod command I understand that this command modify the informations related to an existing account Reading the documentation it seems to me that the -l parmether modify the name of the user pi in miner and then the -m -d paramether move the contents of the old home directory to the new one (named miner) and use this new directory as home directory My doubt is: what exactly do the executions of these operation? I think that: Rename the existing pi user in miner Then move the content of the old home directory (the pi home directory? or what?) into a new directory (/home/miner) that now is the home directory for the miner user. Is it right? The the second doubt is related to this command groupmod -n miner pi It seems to me that change the group name from pi in miner But what exactly is a group in Linux and why is it used? • ssh Password-less login to multiple machines when you already have one

  I'm a little bit confused about setting up a password-less login for multiple machines to begin with, but I think I could do it from scratch. The problem is I already have it set up for one machine and I don't want that to be blown away when I try to set it up for the other machine. Let's clarify: Machine A: the machine I'm connecting from Machine B: the machine I'm connecting to. Password required Machine C: the machine I'm connecting to. Password-less ssh I have read some tutorials on setting up password-less ssh to a certain site, but they usually start with "move id_rsa out of the way so it doesn't get blown away," but then at the end of the tutorial it's not moved back. If I had no help at all, here is what I would do: Log into B ssh-keygen -t rsa -f ~/id_rsa.other scp id_rsa.other.pub A:~/.ssh echo "Host A \n Identity File ~/.ssh/id_rsa.other" > ~/.ssh/config (Note that I realize these commands may not be exactly correct, but this is just the idea). What I'm not quite clear on is if I need to update the config for A, B, or both. I'm fairly certain to do a password-less login from A to B, it is A that needs the public key .. but I also suppose I need B to use the correct id_rsa file for that public key. Finally, I don't want the password-less login for C to be affected at all .. it's using id_rsa. Am I going wrong anywhere?

• Fedora 19 no longer bootable

  I had fedora dual-booted with windows on my laptop for a while but with windows refresh grub was gone and my system directly booted windows. I booted fedora with my systems boot options and with this tutorial: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/GRUB_2 I reinstalled grub2 but then had my system booted into an empty grub prompt: grub So I found the drive containing vmlinuz and initramfs (completely sure about thair location and versions) and tried to manually boot it but after the boot command it said: no suitable video mode found booting in blind mode and nothing happened. Such a tragedy... I have already tried to use live disks rescue system. Funny but troubleshooting options don't apear on my laptop while they do on my desktop pc. I cant even go to boot prompt on my lenovo idepad z400 laptop. I also tried EasyBCD so maybe I could boot it with windows but it comes up with this error: missing AutoNeoGrub().mbr Now I have removed the grub prompt (don't know why) and its really hard for me to reinstall my dearly customized fedora. If anyone knows a way to help boot it again or reinstall it keeping my files and installations I really need it. Thanks PS:I have already tried Boot-repair Disk but it asks me to enable the repo containing grub-efi on my fedora to reinstall the grub2 and fix the boot for me (how could i?).

• Eclipse CDT wont recognize standard library

  I work primarily on my desktop, but I started working on my mac laptop and noticed a problem with eclipse CDT. The standard library was underlined yellow and cout wouldn't work (It wouldn't recognize/find it). I tried restarting the program and that didn't work. I then tried to see if xcode would work, found that the version of xcode was too old, and updated xcode. Eclipse still didn't work, but xcode did. I tried re-installing eclipse to the new version and re-installing cdt. It still wouldn't work. Restarting my computer wont work either. I'm not sure if this helps (or even matters/applies) but when I type g++ --version into terminal, it doesn't work. (I don't know if that matters but some tutorial told me to do that to check if the compiler was working). So, in review, I have: Re-installed eclipse Restarted my computer Re-installed xcode (which I think has all the compilers eclipse uses.) Updated Eclipse Typed g++ --version to test compiler.

• How does everyone set up AWS for PHP with a git workflow while worrying about distributing EC2?

  Hello, I have been looking for something like heroku but for php, and after much frustration (and almost finding what I need, but not quite) we decided to just go with AWS without any other abstraction. We are using PHP 5.3 (and CakePHP 1.3), and are currently using git. Ubuntu seems like the easiest way to get both of those on there and we will most likely use that. We aren't really going worry about outgoing email. We are using smtp through gmail, but will most likely switch to some other service eventually. I had 3 questions: 1) I have been looking at Zend Server, and I am not quite sure how that is more beneficial than xampp. Perhaps it is not? 2) I suppose to make the application scale we would need multiple instances of some ec2 ami. Then just duplicate it and such. The question then becomes how do we make sure all EC2 instances are up to date? 3) I understand the concept of load balancing to some degree. I understand that in 1 region you select a bunch of servers and have it load balance across them. The question then becomes well how about world wide? How do I make it so that traffic is directed to the correct ec2 server? I have heard of route 53, and tried signing up for that, but nothing appears in my control panel. Also perhaps it is just a DNS thing with my domain registrar? AHHH... some tutorial would be helpful!

• Using an environment variable set to a path value: the system cannot find the path specified for %OPENCV_DIR%

  I'm trying to set an environment variable to point to the directory into which I have extracted the latest version of OpenCV, following the instructions in OpenCV's Installation in Windows tutorial. Here's my elevated command line listing. C:\>cd C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11>cd ../../../.. C:\>setx -m OPENCV_DIR C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 SUCCESS: Specified value was saved. C:\>cd %OPENCV_DIR% The system cannot find the path specified. C:\>echo %OPENCV_DIR% %OPENCV_DIR% Firstly I change directory to C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 to ensure that it exists. After that is successful I change directory back to the root of the C drive. Then I use setx to make OPENCV_DIR a system wide environment variable with value the C:\OpenCV2.4.6\build\x64\vc11 path I verified in step 1. Noting the success of setx in the previous step I now change directory using the new environment variable. But it fails with the message The system cannot find the path specified. If I try to echo the value of the OPENCV_DIR environment variable it appears not to be set. Looking in the control panel the OPENCV_DIR environment variable looks correctly set: What's wrong? Why is the variable not working? Am I evoking it incorrectly when I use it to change directory or echo its value?

• Fixing bent pins on a CPU

  While replacing a mainboard in a desktop machine (see related question), I did something stupid. I inserted the CPU into the new mainboard, but didn't check for the right position. When it didn't immediately lock in, I pressed slightly before realizing what was wrong. The result was a number of bent pins. I tried every tutorial that popped up when Googling "CPU bent pins" - using credit cards, sewing needles, and a hunting knife to get the pins back into position - but to no avail: For every pin I get straightened out, two others are bent. I have no problem getting individual pins straightened out, but my many attempts have led to many pins being slightly askew - enough for the CPU not to fit into the socket (An AMD X3 one). Maybe I just lack the motoric finesse. What I would need is some sort of a grid to fix all pins at once. It's a €50 processor so the loss is not catastrophic. But I thought before I go buy a new one, I thought I'd check here whether anybody knows some magic trick, or a cheap generally-available tool to fix this.

• Only error showing is null, rss feed reader not working

  I have been following a tutorial which is showing me how to create an rssfeed reader, I come to the end of the tutorial; and the feed is not displaying in the listView. So I am looking for errors in logCat, but the only one I can find is one just saying 'null', which is not helpful at all. Can anyone spot a potential problem with the code I have written? Thanks. • Add Keyboard Input Language to Ubuntu

  Want to type in multiple languages in Ubuntu?  Here we’ll show you how you can easily add and switch between multiple keyboard layouts in Ubuntu. Add a Keyboard Language To add a keyboard language, open the System menu, select Preferences, and then select Keyboard. In the Keyboard Preferences dialog, select the Layouts tab, and click Add.   You can select a country and then choose an language and keyboard variant.  Note that some countries, such as the United States, may show several languages.  Once you’ve made your selection, you can preview it on the sample keyboard displayed below the menu. Alternately, on the second tab, select a language and then choose a variant.  Click Add when you’ve made your selection. Now you’ll notice that there are two languages listed in the Keyboard Preferences, and they’re both ready to use immediately.  You can add more if you wish, or close the dialog. Switch Between Languages When you have multiple input languages installed, you’ll notice a new icon in your system tray on the top right.  It will show the abbreviation of the country and/or language name that is currently selected.  Click the icon to change the language. Right-click the dialog to view available languages (listed under Groups), open the Keyboard Preferences dialog again, or show the current layout. If you select Show Current Layout you’ll see a window with the keyboard preview we saw previously when setting the keyboard layout.  You can even print this layout preview out to help you remember a layout if you wish. Change Keyboard Shortcuts to Switch Languages By default, you can switch input languages in Ubuntu from the keyboard by pressing both Alt keys together.  Many users are already used to the default Alt+Switch combination to switch input languages in Windows, and we can add that in Ubuntu.  Open the keyboard preferences dialog, select the Layout tab, and click Options. Click the plus sign beside Key(s) to change layout, and select Alt+Shift.  Click Close, and you can now use this familiar shortcut to switch input languages. The layout options dialog offers many more neat keyboard shortcuts and options.  One especially neat option was the option to use a keyboard led to show when we’re using the alternate keyboard layout.  We selected the ScrollLock light since it’s hardly used today, and now it lights up when we’re using our other input language.   Conclusion Whether you regularly type in multiple languages or only need to enter an occasional character from an alternate keyboard layout, Ubuntu’s keyboard settings make it easy to make your keyboard work the way you want.  And since you can even preview and print a keyboard layout, you can even remember an alternate keyboard’s layout if it’s not printed on your keyboard. • NDepend tool – Why every developer working with Visual Studio.NET must try it!

  In the past two months, I have had a chance to test the capabilities and features of the amazing NDepend tool designed to help you make your .NET code better, more beautiful and achieve high code quality. In other words, this tool will definitely help you harmonize your code. I mean, you’ve probably heard about Chaos Theory. Experienced developers and architects are already advocates of the programming chaos that happens when working with complex project architecture, the matrix of relationships between objects which simply even if you are the one who have written all that code, you know how hard is to visualize everything what does the code do. When the application get more and more complex, you will start missing a lot of details in your code… NDepend will help you visualize all the details on a clever way that will help you make smart moves to make your code better. The NDepend tool supports many features, such as: Code Query Language – which will help you write custom rules and query your own code! Imagine, you want to find all your methods which have more than 100 lines of code :)! That’s something simple! However, I will dig much deeper in one of my next blogs which I’m going to dedicate to the NDepend’s CQL (Code Query Language) Architecture Visualization – You are an architect and want to visualize your application’s architecture? I’m thinking how many architects will be really surprised from their architectures since NDepend shows your whole architecture showing each piece of it. NDepend will show you how your code is structured. It shows the architecture in graphs, but if you have very complex architecture, you can see it in Dependency Matrix which is more suited to display large architecture Code Metrics – Using NDepend’s panel, you can see the code base according to Code Metrics. You can do some additional filtering, like selecting the top code elements ordered by their current code metric value. You can use the CQL language for this purpose too. Smart Search – NDepend has great searching ability, which is again based on the CQL (Code Query Language). However, you have some options to search using dropdown lists and text boxes and it will generate the appropriate CQL code on fly. Moreover, you can modify the CQL code if you want it to fit some more advanced searching tasks. Compare Builds and Code Difference – NDepend will also help you compare previous versions of your code with the current one at one of the most clever ways I’ve seen till now. Create Custom Rules – using CQL you can create custom rules and let NDepend warn you on each build if you break a rule Reporting – NDepend can automatically generate reports with detailed stats, graph representation, dependency matrixes and some additional advanced reporting features that will simply explain you everything related to your application’s code, architecture and what you’ve done. And that’s not all. As I’ve seen, there are many other features that NDepend supports. I will dig more in the upcoming days and will blog more about it. The team who built the NDepend have also created good documentation, which you can find on the NDepend website. On their website, you can also find some good videos that will help you get started quite fast. It’s easy to install and what is very important it is fully integrated with Visual Studio. • How To Rip an Audio CD to FLAC with Foobar2000

  Foobar2000 is a great audio player that is fully customizable, is light on system resources, and contains a lot of tools and features. Today we show you how to use it to rip an audio CD to FLAC format. Note: For this tutorial we’re going to assume this is the first time you’re ripping a disc with Foobar2000. We’re running it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Install Foobar2000 and FLAC First download and install Foobar2000 (link below). The main thing you’ll want to make sure to enable during the install process is Audio CD Support… And the freedb Tagger which are located under Optional Features, then continue through the rest of the install wizard. Next you need to install the latest version of the FLAC codec (link below) following the defaults. Rip Audio CD To rip a CD, place it in your CDROM drive, launch Foobar2000 and click File \ Open Audio CD. Select the appropriate CD drive and click the Rip button. Next you’ll want to lookup the disc information with freedb…or you can manually enter in the track data if it’s a custom disc. Select the proper tag information in the freedb tagger window, then click Update files. The data will be entered in, make sure the radio button next to Go to the Converter Setup dialog is selected, and click the Rip button. In the Converter Setup screen, here you can select the output format, where in our case we’re selecting FLAC. In this window you can choose several other options like the output path, merging the tracks into one or individual files…etc. When you have those settings completed click OK. Next you’ll need to find flac.exe which is located wherever you installed it. On our 64-bit Windows 7 system the default path is C:\Program Files (x86)\FLAC Now wait while your CD is ripped and converted to FLAC. You’ll get a Converter Status Report…after you’ve checked it over you can close out of it. If you set the option to show the output files after conversion you can take a look, make sure all tracks were converted, and play them right away if you want. You can play the tracks in Foobar2000 or any player that supports FLAC. If you want to use WMC or WMP see our article on how to play FLAC files in Windows 7 Media Center or Player. It is strongly advised you run some memory check program eg MEMTEST in GRUB boot manager. For Virtual Box, you should most likely enable VT-X (Vanderpool) hardware virtualization in BIOS. A free disk space of 80 GB is required to perform safely the VBox image installation. A Virtual Machine of minimum 6 to 7 GB memory fits the needs of combining OBIEE and Essbase execution.

• Endless terrain in jMonkey using TerrainGrid fails to render

  I have started to learn game development using jMonkey engine. I am able to create single tile of terrain using TerrainQuad but as the next step I'm stuck at making it infinite. I have gone through the wiki and want to use the TerrainGrid class but my code does not seem to work. I have looked around on the web and searched other forums but cannot find any other code example to help. I believe in the below code, ImageTileLoader returns an image which is the heightmap for that tile. I have modified it to return the same image every time. But all I see is a black window.
