The usage of Silverlight and ASP.NET is a precondition. Is it possible to use the WCF RIA Services (and Silverlight) where the data-source are RFCs from SAP ? Makes this sense ? • LINQ to SQL Web Application Best Practices

  In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

• WxPython Incompatible With Snow Leopard?

  Hello all, Recently I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and now I can't run programs built with wxPython. Maybe this has something to do with the fact that Snow Leopard is 64-bit? Thanks!!

• XSL-stylesheet URI using JAX-WS and Glassfish v3.

  Hi there. I'm trying to use XSL-stylesheets in order to transform some generated XML-data to HTML-output. The architecture that I'm using is as follows: [Client Side] Web-Browser = [Server Side: Glassfish v3] JSP-pages - Web-Services. My web service generates some XML-data, then I want to format it with XSL-stylesheet, pass the result to JSP-page and show to user. I'm using JAXP for XSL-transformations and I want to create a javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamSource object with XSL-file stream for the javax.xml.transform.Transformer object, but I'm having a difficulty with specifying the path/URL for the XSL-file. So the question is: where should I put my XSL-stylesheets in a project and how should I access them from code? I'm using Glassfish v3 and NetBeans 6.8. Thanks.

• Can I use the CSS :visited pseudo class on 'wildcard' links?

  Let's say I have a site with multiple links as follows: www.example.com/product/1 www.example.com/product/2 www.example.com/product/3 I also append tracking info to links from time to time so that I can see how my site is being used, e.g, if somebody visits the products page from the product browser I would set a ref parameter: www.example.com/product/1&ref=pb www.example.com/product/2&ref=pb www.example.com/product/3&ref=pb The problem with this is that if the user visits a link of the first type and then views a link of the second type then the :visited pseudo class doesn't seem to apply because the browser only seems to match on exact URLs. Is there any way to have "wildcards" apply to links in this sense, so that when the user sees either the first type or the second type of link that it is highlighted? Note: I cannot change this "ref" architecture; it is inherited.

  Hi! I read something like this about db views: Views are incredibly powerful and useful for one reason that stands out above all the other very good reasons. They reduce code duplication. That is, in most cases, the bottom line. If a query will be used in three or more places, then a view will drastically simplify your changes if the schema or query parameters change. I once had to edit 22 stored procedures to change some query logic. If the original architecture had utilized views, then I would have had only three changes. Can anyone explain to me how it works, and maybe give me some examples? Best regards!

• Proxy calls across a DMZ

  We need to determine a quick way for our web application deployed in a DMZ to communicate to our SQL server that lives in the protected network. Only port 80 is open and available, and no direct SQL traffic is allowed across the firewall. So take the following simple system. A web page (default.aspx) makes a call (string GetData()) that resides in an assembly (Simple.DLL). GetData() uses ADO.NET to open a connection, execute a SQL call, retrieve the data, and return the data to the caller. However, since only port 80 is available and no SQL traffic is allowed, what could we do to accomplish our goal? I believe a .NET remoting solution would work, and I have heard of an architecture where a remoting layer proxies the call from Simple.DLL in the DMZ to another Simple.DLL that runs on the protected side. The remoting layer handles the communication between the two DLL’s. Can someone shed some light on how WCF/remoting can help us and how to get started with a solution?

• How to make scrolling through images as fast as Apple's Photos app

  The Goal — On an iPhone, to browse through several hundred locally-stored jpgs using a UIScrollView. The Problem — Like many others before me, I've tried implementing a scroll view based on Apple's Page Control sample code and found it lacking. The biggest issue I'm currently up against is that the sample code's architecture doesn't seem to scale. With just a few images loaded from disk, everything's fine. Once the number of images gets into the dozens, though, scrolling suffers terribly: the scrollview stutters mid-scroll with each new swipe. The only code I've toyed with that comes even close to being reasonably responsive is Three20, but even there the performance doesn't hold a candle to Photos. For now, I'm just using Three20, but a faster, custom solution would definitely be preferable.

• How can I save an NSDocument concurrently?

  I have a document based application. Saving the document can take a few seconds, so I want to enable the user to continue using the program while it saves the document in the background. Due to the document architecture, my application is asked to save to a temporary location and that temporary file is then copied over the old file. However, this means that I can not just run my file saving code in the background and return way before it is done, since the temporary file has to be written completely before it can be copied. Is there a way to disable this temporary-file-behavior or otherwise enable file saving in the background?

  Hi, My application architecture looks like this. GWT in the UI layer - Calls GWT RPC service (servlets) - Looksup Spring Beans - Calls the DAO layer which is implemented in JPA (EclipseLink). I have successfully tested the application with GWT rpc services directly calling the JPA layer. But I am having trouble integrating spring into the mix. (Primary usage of Spring is transaction management). I tried googling, but could not find any good article on the topic. (Most of the articles refers to using Spring MVC within GWT, which is not what I am looking for) Could you please point me to some article/tutorial? Thanks in advance! Manoj

• Java Framework Choice Question.

  We do have many frameworks available in Java. Struts, Swing, JSF 2.0, Spring etc are used as per their priority. Actually, I don't know how many they are as well! But, as I am fresher to Java, even learning after their architecture, I cannot decide which framework can be used with what type of Projects ! Also, I am confused with mixed use of framework like Spring + JSF. What is the benefit to it ? Another thing making me confusing is about the UI components available in market. Like, we do have Primefaces, Ice-faces, MyFaces, Rich-faces. They may or may not have been supporting AJAX in-built. They may contains some bugs as well. What is best choice for Framework + UI component that can directly provide a best feet solution for any project ?

  Hi, Context : I would like to create WCF Service that can be consumed by an ASP.NET web app and an iphone application. My goal : Create an SOA architecture. My problem : How "keep the user connected" on the WCF service? I tried asp.net membership provider with wcf and that works fine. But the problem is that I have to give username/password for each call. What can I do to resolve this problem? What's the best way to solve this kind of problem? • What is the main purpose and sense to have staging server the same as production?

  Hi, In our company we have staging and production servers. I'm trying to have them in state 1:1 after latest release. We've got web application running on several host and many instances of it. The issue is that I am an advocate of having the same architecture (structure) of web applications on staging and production servers to easily test new features and avoid creating of new bugs with new releases. But not everyone agree with me, and for them is not a such big deal to have different connection between staging application instances. Even maybe to have more application and connections between application on staging than on production server. I would like to ask about pros and cons of such an approach? I mean some good points to agree with me, or some bad why maybe i don't have right. Some examples of consequences and so forth.

• Which web Tier Framework for a public commercial website with heavy load ?

  Hello everyone, As a part of an enterprise architecture exercise, i need to find a java-based framework filling these constraints : heavy (i think) load : 5000 concurrent connections widely known : can't be too exotic, the contractors would be too high priced. relatively easy to use : developpement time must be reasonnable must be as compliant as possible with the css/html layout produced by a designer Must look like "web 2.0" from the marketing point of view. What i learned from my limited experience is : jsf : 1, don't know. 2, 3 ok. 4 not ok (at least not without huge effort) wicket : 1, not really. 2, 3 and 4 ok. gwt : 1, don't know. 2, 3 ok. 4 not ok (but more ok than jsf) others : not really "web 2.0" or not really known I'm really junior, so my ideas about those frameworks are probably wrong, that's why i come to you, stackoverflowees. But examples are still very simple and poor. They are based on one table and one model. Now, my question is: do they use Domain Model Design in real-world PHP projects? I've been looking for some good documentation about this, but I haven't found anything good enough, that explains how to manage several tables and transfer them to Domain Objects. As long as I know, there is Hibernate library, that has this features in Java, but what should I use in PHP (Zend Framework)?

• How to run Android instrumentation tests from the command line (in Kubuntu)?

  We are able to run instrumentation tests of Android from the command line on Windows by launching: adb shell am instrument -w <package.test>/android.test.InstrumentationTestRunner This gives us good results. Using the same architecture, we are unable to run the same in Kubuntu. We have the same setup in Kubuntu. Can someone let us know, if there are packages with same name.. Then what package will the adb shell point? How will the emulator connect with adb shell from cmd line? DO we need to do any changes to do so in Kubuntu ?

• Multiple Service Address Configs in WCF Silverlight App

  My team is building our first significant Silverlight application, using a 3 layered architecture and WCF. We have developed about 10 separate WCF services in the middle layer so far, and this number is only going to grow. Generally, the presentation layer (ie. the Silverlight app) is pointing to the services as hosted on our dev server. However, there are times when I want it to access the services from localhost - ie. the developers machine. Is there an easy way to change where the presentation layer is looking for the services? Is there some way of easily switching between options here?

  I work for an IT department with about 50+ developers. It used to be about 100+ developers but was cut because of the recession. When our department was bigger there was an ambitious effort made to set up a special architecture group. One thing this group decided to do was create our own internal logger. They thought it was such a simple task that we could spend recources and do it ourselves. Now we are having issues with performance and difficulty viewing the logs generated and some employees are frustrated that we are spending recources on infrastructure stuff like this instead of focusing on serving our business and using stuff that already exists like log4net or Enterprise Logger. Can you assist me in listing up reasons why you should not create your own .net logger. Also reasons for why you should are welcome to get a fair point of view :)

• Xaml not WPF

  I am interested in using Xaml with expression blend for creating user interfaces in an application. However, because of the limitations of the target architecture, I cannot use WPF or C#. So, what I am interested in is in any examples / existing projects or advice from anyone who has experiance of this technology on the use of Xaml in it's "Pure" form as a specification language not tied to WPF. Specific questions: 1) Is it possible to use Blend + Xaml without the WPF elements, or without C# backing classes? 2) Are there any other implementations of Xaml parsers etc. which use different architectures, and can they work with blend or similar tools. 3) Are there alternative editor / designer tools which can help in this situation? I am aware of the MyXaml and MycroXaml projects, and have found a lot of resources on the web about Xaml, but 99% of it relates directly to WPF. This is fine for understanding the concepts of Xaml, but doesn't help with the implimentation I need. Many thanks!

• Defining Makefiles variables from a script

  I am creating a Makefile which I want it to be a single file for different architectures, OSes, libraries, etc. To do this I have a build specific XML file which defines the different configuration options for each architecture. The config file is read by Perl (it could be any language) and the Perl output returns something like: var1 := var1_value var2 := var2_value var3 := var3_value What I am trying to do is define this variables in my Makefile. From the makefile I am calling my readconfig script and it is giving the correct output, but I have not been able to get this variables as part of my Makefile. I have tried the use of eval and value, but none of them have work (although it could be an issue of me not knowing how to use them. In overall what I am trying to do is something like: read_config: $(eval (perl '-require "readConfig.pl"')) @echo $(var1) It could be assumed I am using only GNU Make behavior.   Below is an example of a question given on my last test in a Computer Engineering course. Anyone mind explaining to me how to get the start/end addresses of each? I have listed the correct answers at the bottom... The MSP430F2410 device has an address space of 64 KB (the basic MSP430 architecture). Fill in the table below if we know the following. The first 16 bytes of the address space (starting at the address 0x0000) is reserved for special function registers (IE1, IE2, IFG1, IFG2, etc.), the next 240 bytes is reserved for 8-bit peripheral devices, and the next 256 bytes is reserved for 16-bit peripheral devices. The RAM memory capacity is 2 Kbytes and it starts at the address 0x1100. At the top of the address space is 56KB of flash memory reserved for code and interrupt vector table.
