    I've been struggling for 3 days trying to dual boot Ubuntu 11.10 and Windows 7. I want to use an SSD for my Ubuntu installation and an hdd for Windows. I realized that I have to install windows first and then ubuntu, and so I did that. When I first install windows it boots fine from my hdd, but when I add ubuntu on my ssd and restart, I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've read many forums where this is asked but haven't found a single solution that works. I've tried boot repair. It told me to make a fat ESP partition and I did that as well but it still doesn't work. I'm a noob and any suggestions would be really appreciated.

  • Problems with installing Ubuntu 12.04 alongside Windows 7

    Despite others, the installation shows "Install alongside Windows 7" option but when I select that option, it asks to remove the installation drive and close the tray if any and press Enter. After I press Enter, it restarts and opens Windows and when I put the CD-R again, it goes back to the option. What shall I do? I don't want to delete any files and Windows 7 but still want to try out Ubuntu 12.04 as I was a former user of Ubuntu 11.04 a year or so ago.

  • Ubuntu 12.04 installer does not recognize Windows 7

    I recently purchased an ASUS N56VZ-ES71 laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed on it. I wish to dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04 on it. I shrank the hard drive partitions to leave about 150 GB unallocated for Ubuntu 12.04. When I boot the Live CD of Ubuntu and attempt to install, the installer does not recognize any other operating systems. Through reading a few questions, I have found that this is due to a GPT partitioning table that Windows uses. I ran boot-repair as per other threads' suggestions. This was my output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/1176988/ I suppose my question is: how do I proceed in order to get the installer to recognize Windows, so that I don't have to erase the current partition table and can get a safe install?     There are a lot of threads discussing existence of WPF/Silverlight/HTML5 on Windows 8, I just need to clarify the picture about desktop applications only, I have following queries to the experts What are the technologies available for developing desktop applications on Windows 8? What are the technologies I can use for creating rich multimedia applications. Currently I have an application with DirectX 9 and WPF. If I am to develop something like that for Windows 8 then what options are available to me, and what are the pros and cons of these. Is it a good idea to continue with the same DirectX 9 code on Windows 8 as well? What is the best option equivalent to DirectX, Is it XNA or is it DirectX 11 or something else? Performance an extensibility are critical points to me. All suggestions are welcome. Thanks in Advance.

  • Windows 8.1 erased Ubuntu 14.04 partition

    I had Ubuntu 14.04 installed with a Windows 7 dual boot. Now, I've just replaced W7 by Windows 8, but the Ubuntu partition has disappeared! Running fdisk -l doesn't show /dev/sda5 (which was the Ubuntu partition), if I access to Gparted, it shows the Ubuntu partition as "empty space" and from Windows 8's device manager, this partition also appears as empty space! WTF has happened here? Has the partition been actually erased?

    Hi All I have just got a new company mobile and would like to begin developing apps for the HTC HD2 Mobile Phone. However, when I downloaded Microsoft Windows Phone Developer Tools, it pretty much said right at the end of installation that "Setup could not install correctly", and I clicked on "more", and it said "Silverlight 4.0 could not install correctly". So, the fact that Windows Phone Dev Tools couldn't install completely was because of this Silverlight 4 that couldn't install! Has anyone had the same problems, if so, how did you resolve this issue (if you did)? And... Is there another way to develop applications for mobile phones running the Windows Operating System other than XNA and Windows Dev Tools? Even better... Could it be done simply using the current Visual Studio Express Edition I already have? Thanks All

    i have a hp dv6 system. on which i was having the windows 8 installed. as i was interested in downloading the ubuntu 12.10 along with windows 8(not inside) .i have made separate partition in ubuntu 12.10 but some how it backfires and now i am not able to boot windows 8 and ubuntu. with windows 8 there is no drive to access the drive partition that has OS. with ubuntu i am getting blank screen. i am thinking that i have problem in system partition but i am not able to solve it. Plz help me. i am in a venerable condition... i have tried booting the window with the help of installation cd but iam not succesful in any of the method - 1-reset PC 2-RECOVERY 3- from command prompt i tried to check disks but it is not showing anything

    There's such utility for Windows developers called regtlib. I have three computers - one with WinXP, another two with Win2k3. If I run built-in Windows search for file with wildcard regtlib* on the whole filesystem search finds nothing on all three computers. If I try to execute regtlib on WinXP command line it says it can't find such a file or built-in command. The same on one of the two Win2k3 computers. But when I do that on the other Win2k3 computer I see typical regtlib output. What happens? What is the magic that invokes regtlib without the file being present on the filesystem?

    Hi all, I recently was tricked into running one of those registry cleaner programs (RegistryBooster). It seemed to work fine until I tried to start my postgres service. For some reason, the 'path to executable' was no longer set on the service properties page, and obviously would not start without a path. How can I either fix the existing service or uninstall/ re-install just the service without re-installing postgres altogether? postgres 8.4 windows xp sp3

    It worked for about a week then stopped working. I'm trying to make it work between a Windows 7 laptop and a Windows XP laptop. My router is a Linksys E1000. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the program multiple times. I've tried port forwarding. I've tried making exceptions in the firewall. I've tried disabling the firewalls. It might be relevant also that Input Director doesn't work either. What am I doing wrong?

  • Having XP VM use my host OSX ssh tunnel to connect to a remote site?

    I am using Mac OSX and have Windows XP running on VMWare Fusion. I'm creating an ssh tunnel from OSX to a remote server, and then trying to have Windows XP use that tunnel (I actually use a program called Proxifier on XP to filter my XP MS SQL Server traffic through that tunnel) Note that I can successfully create an ssh tunnel (on port 9333) from the XP putty to the remote host, and have SQL Server Proxify through that tunnel and it all works correctly. However when I try to set up the tunnel in OSX, and have Proxifier in XP point to the OSX tunnel instead of localhost, it doesn't seem to connect. Here is the OSX command i'm using to create the tunnel: ssh -i /my/key -p 9001 -D 9333 -g me@remotehostname Then I set my XP proxifier to point to macosxhostname:9333 (instead of the previous localhost:9333 which worked corrently when using putty) Any suggestions on what I may have missed? My XP firewall is turned off while setting this up.

    when i do "route print" on my machine, it shows my default gateway as 10.225.150.1 but when i do tracert www.google.com, the first machine it reaches is 10.225.150.2. The route command does not show any entry for 10.225.150.2. So, why tracert is showing 10.225.150.2? my maching is on Windows XP.
