• Linq - how does it work??

  Hey, I have just been looking into Linq with ASP.Net. It is very neat indeed. I was just wondering - how do all the classes get populated? I mean in ASP.Net, suppose you have a Linq file called Catalogue, and you then use a For loop to loop through Catalogue.Products and print each Product name. How do the details get stored? Does it just go through the Products table on page load and create another instance of class Product for each row, effectively copying an entire table into an array of class Product? If so, I think I have created a system very much like this, in the sense that there is a SiteContent module with an instance of each Manager class - for example there is UserManager, ProductManager, SettingManager and alike. UserManager contains an instance of the User class for each row in the Users table. They also contain methods such as Create, Update and Remove. These Managers and their "Items" are created on every page load. This just makes it nice and easy to access users, products, settings etc in every page as far as I, the developer, am concerned. Any any subsequent pages I need to create, I just need to reference SiteContent.UserManager to access a list of users, rather than executing a query from within that page (ie this method separates out data access from the workings of the page, in the same way as using code behind separates out the workings of the page from how the page is layed out). However the problem is that this technique seems rather slow. I mean it is effectively creating a database on every page load, taking data from another database. I have taken measures such as preventing, for example, the ProductManager from being created if it is not referenced on page load. Therefore it does not load data into storage when it is not needed. My question is basically whether my technique does the exact same thing as Linq, in the sense of duplicating data from tables into properties of classes.. • Xcode Link Frameworks "Relative to Current SDK" Doesn't Work When Mixing Mac Framework and iPhone St

  I have a framework of code I maintain. It's got mac and iphone objective-c code. And some of it is shared. I'm not having any problems with code. It's a problem with Xcode. Let's just call my framework "AwesomeKit" for this problem. The first thing I did was create an xcode Framework project called "AwesomeKit". Add source files to it, link against the common mac frameworks: foundation, cocoa, carbon, etc. It compiles fine. Then, add a new "static library" target, let's call it "AwesomeKit-iPhone" and set the base SDK in the build settings to iphone device 3.1.3. The problem comes when I try to add "Existing Frameworks" to the AweseomKit-iPhone target. -First change the current build target to AwesomeKit-iPhone. -Right click on any group and select "Add Existing Frameworks..." -Choose UIKit.framework UIKit will immediately be highlighted red, as if it's missing. It is indeed missing because Xcode uses the "Relative SDK" setting from the "Mac OS 10.6" SDK. When it should be using it relative to the current target's base sdk iphone device 3.1.3. What the heck? Has anyone experienced this? This is really annoying.

  Hi- I'm trying to use an external library DevExpress.XtraTreeList.v8.1.dll in my vsto office addin built using VS2010 beta 2. I am getting the following compile time error: DevExpress.Utils.AppareanceObject threw an exception -- System.NotSupportedException. The error message goes on to say that for compatibility reasons I can use the NetFx40_LegacySecurityPolicy switch. I've tried putting this config variable in all of the following locations: 1) my applications config file. 2) C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.21006\msbuild.exe.config 3) C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\dev.exe.config None of these have resolved the problem. Here were the references I've used. re-enable cas msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee191568(VS.100).aspx How do I get rid of this error so I can build the application in vs 2010?

  I was wondering how the garbage collector in Java deals with the following situation. Object A has a reference to Object B and Object B has a reference to Object C. The main program has a reference to Object A. So you can use Object B trough Object A, and Object C trough Object B trough Object A. What happens to Object B and Object C, if the link between Object A and Object B is set to null? Should Object B and Object C now been collected by the Garbage Collector? I mean there is still a connection between Object B and Object C.

  Hi, i'm not sure how vim's set autoread works. The help says "When a file has been detected to have been changed outside of Vim and it has not been changed inside of Vim, automatically read it again." So after :set autoread I open a file with vim, I switch to an other editor, change the file, and wait to see the changes in vim as well, nothing happens, I have to say :e to reload the file with the new content. what did i miss? • libcurl .NET does not want to work on Win64

  I wrote multi-threaded FTP uploader on C#.NET using libcurl.NET. Everything works fine on my machine, but when I give application (exe + libcurl.dll + 2 libcurl C# binding DLLs) to my friend who is running Win64, application crashes. After adding exception catcher to whole Main() function, I was able to get readable error message: "An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format (Exception from HRESULT = 0x8007000b)" After googling for a while, I found an advice to enable unmanaged code in my project settings. I've recompiled my application and LibCurlNet.dll with this flag set but it did not help. What can cause such problem?

• Mac OS X, MySQL Preference Pane doesn't work

  I downloaded and installed MySQL 5.1.47 for OS X 10.6 using the DMG archive: mysql-5.1.47-osx10.6-x86_64.dmg I also installed MySQL.prefPane and MySQLStartupItem.pkg. MySQL.prefPane is a Preference Pane. The problem is, whenever I attempt to start/stop MySQL from the Preference Pane, System Preferences just hangs. It runs at about 50% CPU forever, eventually I have for force quit System Preferences. The same thing happens if I toggle "Automatically Start MySQL Server on Startup". Basically the MySQL Preference Pane is not functional. Note that I have no problem starting MySQL from the command line: sudo /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe I have tried reinstalling MySQL and the Preference Pane. I'm using the standard installation location, nothing out of the ordinary. Every time the MySQL Preference Pane just hangs. I'm doing this on a Macbook Pro (Intel) running OS X 10.6.3. There are no old versions of MySQL on this machine.

  Although Enable Edit and Continue is checked on the Web tab of my ASP.Net MVC 2 project, I cannot in fact change the source code while running. For example, if I try to edit a controller while paused in the debugger, I cannot change the file (acts as if read only). I found a related post Edit and continue in ASP.NET web projects, however The answers seem to suggest I should be able to at least edit the code, then reload the page to see the result. I don't know what the distinction is between a Web Application and Web Site projects Any guidance is appreciated.

• Getting overflow-y:scroll to work with fixed positioning html & css

  I have a Jquery tools scrollable thats set to be fixed to the bottom of the browser window. Ideally i would just like to get a overflow-y:scroll; working for the page as a whole when the browser is < 700px. (so no content gets hidden, as its all fixed place).   So I'm trying to get some code that is written for gcc to compile on Visual Studio 2008. • Cannot get net 4.5rc to work

  I have installed .net 4.5rc from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/hh854779.aspx because I would like to use the new spatial features when developing with visual visual web developer 2010 express. But when I want to change the target framework to .net 4.5 in the project properties it is not there. I have checked the directory in C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64 and can see that there is no v4.5 folder but the v4.0 directory has been updated with a timestamp corresponding to when I installed v4.5. The version of the v4.0 directory is v4.0.30319. I am running windows 7 on my computer. Any ideas why I cannot find v4.5 ? thanks Thomas *UPDATE Based on the comment below I have found out that I am running 4.5. For others reading this post, .net 4.5 replaces the files in the .net 4.0 directory but without renaming the directory to .net 4.5 (a bit confusing). To check whether your assemblies have been updated check the product version of eg. system.dll (right click - details). According to this post http://www.west-wind.com/weblog/posts/2012/Mar/13/NET-45-is-an-inplace-replacement-for-NET-40 if the product version is above 17000 it is running 4.5.

• WSIT, Maven, and wsimport -- Can They Work Together?

  Hi all, I'm working on a small-ish multi-module project in Maven. We've separated the UI from the database layer using Web Services, and thanks to the jaxws-maven-plugin, the creation of the WSDL and WS client are more or less handled for us. (The plugin is essentially a wrapper around wsgen and wsimport.) So far so good. The problem comes when I try to layer WSIT security into the picture. NetBeans allows me to generate the security metadata easily, but wsimport seems completely incapable of dealing with anything beyond a Basic-auth level of security. I have also tried using wsimport from the command line to point to the Tomcat-generated WSDL, which has the additional security info. Nothing, however, seems to change the composition of the wsimport-generated files at all. So I guess my question here is, to get a WSIT-compliant client, am I stuck abandoning Maven and the jaxws plugin altogether? Is there a way to get a WSIT client to auto-generate? Or will I need to generate the client by hand? Let me know if you need any additional info beyond what I've written here. I'm deploying to Tomcat, although that doesn't seem to be an issue, as Maven seems happy to pull Metro into the deployed WAR file. Thanks in advance!
