Why is there so much XML in Java these days?

This is really more of a philosophy/design issue. I did some work in Java back in the middle 90's and again in the early 2000's and now I'm coming back to it after spending a lot of time in C/C++ and it seems like there was an explosion of XML dependency while I was gone. Major build system tools like ant and maven depend on XML for their configuration, but I'm actually more concerned with all the frameworks, such as Spring, Hibernate, etc. My experience is that powerful supporting libraries like these are where a developer can really get leverage for building programs with lots of features without writing a lot of code, but it really seems like I'm getting one language for the price of two here. I write a bunch of Java classes, but then I also write a bunch of XML files to glue them together. The things that get done in the XML are things that I can see reasonable ways of doing in straight code without the middleman, and they don't really seem to be treated exactly like configuration files: they change rarely and they end up getting committed to source code control like the Java code itself, but they are distributed with the resulting application and need to be unpacked and installed in the classpath in order to get the application to work. I'm working with server applications that are not web-based, so maybe the domain is a bit different from what most people are doing, but I just can't help feeling that I must be doing something wrong here. Can someone point me to a good source of information for why these design choices were made and what problems they are meant to solve so that I can analyze my own experiences in this context?

How do I use cookies to store users' recent site history(PHP)?

I decided to make a recent view box that allows users to see what links they clicked on before. Whenever they click on a posting, the posting's id gets stored in a cookie and displays it in the recent view box. In my ad.php, I have a definerecentview function that stores the posting's id (so I can call it later when trying to get the posting's information such as title, price from the database) in a cookie. Why are changes to classes ignored after dom changes?

I have a price grid that uses relative positioning to move a field around, beneath a box with: overflow: hidden;. In this is field, there are absolute-positioned boxes containing prices. When this box is hovered, the matching values above and left of the will change color. In order to achieve this, a class is toggled using jQuery. This initially works. However, after the grid is moved, the class change doesn't affect the block above the grid anymore. In the Chrome console, i can see the class being added, but it's css-styling isn't applied. No other styles for the element have changed. I am 100% sure there is no other style-rule influencing the element, it just stops responding to the change in class after the DOM has been altered. Can i 'refresh' the DOM somehow? "Ghost" values in PHP/Smarty.

I've been working on a site for a while changing the layout and skin of a webshop checkout process. I've noticed that if you go all the way through the process until the last page, then click the link to go back to the view products page, the delivery method price displays underneath the navigation buttons, until you refresh and it goes away again. I've downloaded both sourced from the browser (Chrome, but this bug applies to all browsers) and used a file difference tool to display the differences, the result being only: < error.html vs > normal.html 34c34 < <link href="gzip.php?file=167842c1496093fbcd391b41cf7b03da.css&time=1272272181" rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css"/> --- > <link href="gzip.php?file=167842c1496093fbcd391b41cf7b03da.css&time=1272272348" rel="Stylesheet" type="text/css"/> Which is just the way it zips up the CSS stylesheets. (afaik) Has anyone ever encountered such a problem, or anything similar? Normal: Error: I can't even hazard a guess as to what is causing this, at all. I've got a model with its validations, and I found out that I can't update an attribute without validating the object before. I already tried to add on => :create syntax at the end of each validation line, but I got the same results. Hello, I have a xmlWriter and want to write String which containt chars of "/" "<" "" (which are part of the xml syntax and break the xml code). Many users, many cpus, no delays. Good for cloud?

I wish to set up a CPU-intensive time-important query service for users on the internet. A usage scenario is described below. Is cloud computing the right way to go for such an implementation? If so, what cloud vendor(s) cater to this type of application? I ask specifically, in terms of: 1) pricing 2) latency resulting from: - slow CPUs, instance creations, JIT compiles, etc.. - internal management and communication of processes inside the cloud (e.g. a queuing process and a calculation process) - communication between cloud and end user 3) ease of deployment A usage scenario I am expecting is: - A typical user sends a query (XML of size around 1K) once every 30 seconds on average. - Each query requires a numerical computation of average time 0.2 sec and max time 1 sec on a 1 GHz Pentium. The computation requires no data other than the query itself and is performed by the same piece of code each time. - The delay a user experiences between sending a query and receiving a response should be on average no more than 2 seconds and in general no more than 5 seconds. - A background save to a DB of the response should occur (not time critical) - There can be up to 30000 simultaneous users - i.e., on average 1000 queries a second, each requiring an average 0.2 sec calculation, so that would necessitate around 200 CPUs. Currently I'm look at GAE Java (for quicker deployment and less IT hassle) and EC2 (Speed and price optimization) as options. Where can I learn more about the right way to set ups such a system? past threads, different blogs, books, etc.. BTW, if my terminology is wrong or confusing, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate any help.

iPhone - sorting the results of a core data entity

I have a core data entity that represents the attributes of a product, as number, price, etc. The product number is a NSString property and follows the form X.y where X is a number variable of digits and Y is one digit. I'm creating a checkout for customers and the data about what's in their cart is being sent to a page (for just now) via $_GET. I want to extract that data and then populate a multidimensional array with it using a loop. I'm aware of being able to add data to an array like $data = [] after delacring an empty array but the actual syntax eludes me. Having to insert a record, then update the same record warrants 1:1 relationship design?

Let's say an Order has many Line items and we're storing the total cost of an order (based on the sum of prices on order lines) in the orders table. -------------- orders -------------- id ref total_cost -------------- -------------- lines -------------- id order_id price -------------- In a simple application, the order and line are created during the same step of the checkout process. So this means INSERT INTO orders .... -- Get ID of inserted order record INSERT into lines VALUES(null, order_id, ...), ... where we get the order ID after creating the order record. The problem I'm having is trying to figure out the best way to store the total cost of an order. I don't want to have to create an order create lines on an order calculate cost on order based on lines then update record created in 1. in orders table This would mean a nullable total_cost field on orders for starters... My solution thus far is to have an order_totals table with a 1:1 relationship to the orders table. But I think it's redundant. Ideally, since everything required to calculate total costs (lines on an order) is in the database, I would work out the value every time I need it, but this is very expensive. What are your thoughts?

Entity Framework Decorator Pattern

In my line of business we have Products. These products can be modified by a user by adding Modifications to them. Modifications can do things such as alter the price and alter properties of the Product. This, to me, seems to fit the Decorator pattern perfectly. Now, envision a database in which Products exist in one table and Modifications exist in another table and the database is hooked up to my app through the Entity Framework. How would I go about getting the Product objects and the Modification objects to implement the same interface so that I could use them interchangeably? For instance, the kind of things I would like to be able to do: Given a Modification object, call .GetNumThings(), which would then return the number of things in the original object, plus or minus the number of things added by the modification. This question may be stemming from a pretty serious lack of exposure to the nitty-gritty of EF (all of my experience so far has been pretty straight-forward LOB Silverlight apps), and if that's the case, please feel free to tell me to RTFM. A value also has to be entered, and I can just Messagebox.Show() a warning and that's all I'd need to do. INSERT INTO ...SELECT syntax error in join operator

I'm trying to write a shopping basket into a order + orderline in a sql database from C# asp.net. the orderline will contain a ordernumber, total price, productid, quantity etc. for every item in the basket. The order itself will contain the ordernumber as primary key and will be linked to the different lines through it. Everything worked fine yesterday, but now as i tried to use a SELECT command in the insert into statement to get things more dynamic i'm getting the above described syntax error. Does anybody know what's wrong with this statement: INSERT INTO [order] (klant_id,totaalprijs,btw,subtotaal,verzendkosten) SELECT klant.id , SUM(orderregel.totaalprijs) , SUM(orderregel.btw) , SUM(orderregel.totaalprijs) - SUM(orderregel.btw) , 7.50 FROM orderregel INNER JOIN klant ON [order].klant_id = klant.id WHERE klant.username = 'jerry' GROUP BY id; the ordernumber in the "order" table is on autonumber, in the asp codebehind there is a for each which handles the lines being written for every product, there's an index set on 0 outside of this loop and is heightened with 1 every end of it. The executenonquery of the order is only executed once at the beginning of the first loop and the lines are added after with MAX(ordernumber) as ordernumber. I hope i have provided enough information and somebody is capable of helping me. Thanks in advance!

MySQL: optimization of table (indexing, foreign key) with no primary keys

Each member has 0 or more orders. Each order contains at least 1 item. memberid - varchar, not integer - that's OK (please do not mention that's not very good, I can't change it). So, thera 3 tables: members, orders and order_items. As you see, order_items table has no primary keys (and I think there is no sense to create an auto_increment id for this table, because once we want to extract data, we always extract it as WHERE orderid='1000456' order by item_number_in_card asc - the whole block, id woudn't be helpful in queries). Once data is inserted into order_items, it's not UPDATEd, just SELECTed. The questions are: I think it's a good idea to put index on item_number_in_cart. Could anybody please confirm that? Is there anything else I have to do with order_items to increase the performance, or that looks pretty good? I could miss something because I'm a newbie. Thank you in advance.

Assume I have the following nesting: <div class="cointainer-fluid"> <div class="row-fluid"> <div class="span3">  </div> <div class="span9">  </div> </div> </div> I'd like to put an unknown number of <div class="span3"></div> in the main content area. (Each of the span3 is suppose to contain a product photo, name, price, etc.) Of course, my aim is that be responsive. So, I might display 20 products, which I'd like to possibly display 5 products per "row" on a wide screen, then 4 products per "row" on a slightly less wide screen, then 3, then 2, then 1. For example (each X represents a product): Wide Screen row 1: X X X X X row 2: X X X X X row 3: X X X X X row 4: X X X X X Less Wide Screen row 1: X X X X row 2: X X X X row 3: X X X X row 4: X X X X row 5: X X X X Even Less Wide Screen row 1: X X X row 2: X X X row 3: X X X row 4: X X X row 5: X X X row 6: X X X row 7: X X It seems like I need to do nested rows. However, if I do that, then I'll only be able to fit a certain amount of products in each nested row. For anyone interest to see where I come from you can refer to part 1, but it is not necessary. write file need to optimised for heavy traffic Below is a snippet of code I have written to capture some financial tick data from the broker API. The code will run without error. I need to optimize the code, because in peak hours the zf_TickEvent method will be call more than 10000 times a second. I use a memorystream to hold the data until it reaches a certain size, then I output it into a text file. I will try to vary the buffer length but in terms of code structure, is this (almost) the fastest? When memorystream is filled up and I am emptying it to the file, what would happen to the new data coming in? Do I need to implement a second buffer to hold that data while I am emptying my first buffer? Or is c# smart enough to figure it out? Thanks for any advice

Cant get JavaScipt to check for null objects

I really don't know what the issue is here. Far as I can see, the code is simple and should work fine. var Prices=""; for (var PriceCount = 1; PriceCount <= 120; PriceCount++) { var CurrentPrice = "Price" + PriceCount; if (prevDoc.getElementById(CurrentPrice).value != null) { if (Prices == "") { Prices = prevDoc.getElementById(CurrentPrice).value; } else { Prices += "," + prevDoc.getElementById(CurrentPrice).value; } } else { break; } } There could be up to 120 hidden inputs on the form. The moment we check for an input that doesn't exist the loop should break. My test page has two input elements that get pulled. On the third (the null) I get this error in firebug: prevDoc.getElementById(CurrentPrice) is null if (prevDoc.getElementById(CurrentPrice).value != null) { Yes it is null...that's what the check is for ?_? Does any one know what I'm doing wrong? This seems like it should be really straight forward. EDIT: for clarity's sake, prevDoc=window.opener.document
