Apache Virtualhost entry with Windows hostname

I have a Windows Domain Controller and we use it for DNS for our internal network. I have an Ubuntu box with an IP address of 172.16.34.149. Within the Windows DNS I created the forward and reverse lookup entries for the name Endymion. Naturally when ever I FTP/SSH/HTTP/etc to the hostname Endymion it resolves correctly to my Ubuntu box. I wanted to do some web development on this box for an existing site. There were problems when I placed the website in a subfolder of /var/www/. Let's just say it was in folder /var/www/projectx/. The issue involved the incorrect resolution of non-relative urls. So I figure I could create a new DNS entry for the hostname projectx. Sure enough when I FTP/SSH/HTTP/etc to the hostname projectx it takes me to the same ubuntu box as the hostname Endymion...this is what I would expect. I now have two hostnames for the same box. I then create a Virtualhost entry in httpd.conf that looks like the following: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/projectx ServerName projectx ServerAlias projectx </VirtualHost> Sure enough when I go to a browser and type in http://projectx/ it takes me to the correct subfolder. Everything works!!! Not so fast. I then go to http://endymion/ and instead of taking me to /var/www/ it takes me to /var/www/projectx/ Clearly I'm missing something. Help please! ;)

How to setup apache multi-site with multi-domain on ec2

Say I have two document roots domain1/ and domain2/ I know how to access those two roots from my own computer if they are hosted on the same computer. My question is that if I want to do the same thing on my ec2 server, how should I configure my elastic ips to those two roots? I know by default the elastic ip will only associate to the root with the name localhost(127.0.0.1). Anyone could give me a detailed answer? An example would help, thanks!

Apache: set aside specific number of servers for a single "high priority" script

I have a bunch of scripts, but some of them are higher priority than others: /var/www/normal-priority/script1.pl /var/www/normal-priority/script2.pl /var/www/normal-priority/script3.pl and /var/www/high-priority/script1.pl /var/www/high-priority/script2.pl /var/www/high-priority/script3.pl All running under mod-perl. They reside in separate directories. From time to time, the normal-priority scripts get very busy, and the httpd servers "swamp out" the less frequently called high priority ones. Is it possible to set aside n httpd servers so that they only listen for the "high priority" scripts?

Vhost in Apache only working locally?

Ok, I have added lines like: 127.0.0.1 somedomain.com Or some other domain that points to my routers IP, and is forwarded, but I get to the main site, but I want it to go to the subfolder I defined in my httpd-vhosts.conf: NameVirtualHost somedomain.com:80 <VirtualHost somedomain.com:80> DocumentRoot "D:/Apps/xampp/htdocs/somedomain" ServerName somedomain.com ServerAlias somedomain.com </VirtualHost> So, locally somedomain.com works, just remotely it goes to the root htdocs. So If I use a *:80 wildcard I works, but then everything points to the subfolder and all the other vhosts seem to get ignored. Any Idea why this is?

For each development sites I want to have a unique port number. For instance, domain.com:1234 This is what I have in my httpd.conf file. After restart the page domain.com:1234 is not showing in the browser. Is there anything else that I need to do besides what I have already done to make this work? Listen *:1234 <VirtualHost *:1234> DocumentRoot /var/www/dev_sites/test ServerName domain.com:1234 </VirtualHost> It looks like if I go to my local hostname (kk.local:1234) it shows. Is there some sort of dns that I need to do? I really don't want to go into godaddy everytime I add a development site. Is there a way around that?

Looking in the logs: (13)Permission denied: Can't open directory for index: /xyz/www/ I've tried recursively adding 777 permissions but still have the same issue.

Apache httpd VirtualHost config - multiple sites

[Advised to post here from StackExchange] I have a site to work on, because of the way the URLs are built the application seems to have been created on the assumption that it will be at the server root (only app). On my dev server I have other projects and up to now a simple symlink has been working for me, but that's not the case now because this new app wants to sit at the route and process all URLs arriving on :80. Hopefully this snippet from httpd.conf will help explain what I'm trying to acheive: # default for any not matched elsewhere <VirtualHost *:80> ServerName localhost DocumentRoot /var/www/html/newproject </VirtualHost> # now try to pick out specific URLs <VirtualHost localhost/webdev> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/existingProject ServerName localhost/project </VirtualHost> Also need to be able to get same affect from wherever I'm accessing the httpd instance from. Setting up Django application on lighttpd behind apache reverse proxy

I need make it available under http://example.com/myapp. It works fine except for redirects - when I login from http://example.com/myapp/login it redirects me to http://example.com instead of http://example.com/myapp. When logging-in from http://some_other_example.com/login it is ok. Starting Apache through XAMPP is not working

I've checked the error logs for this particular problem and it seems no access can be made to port 80. (OS 10013)An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. : make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 Turning the Windows firewall off didn't work, so I'm a bit lost. All of this is running on my laptop so I don't have my own "server" per se but I was under the impression that this would work without the need for one independent of my own personal computer. How would I solve this?

502 errors with apache mod_proxy hot standby (or equivalent)

Anyone knows how to configure the hot standby (+H) mod_proxy feature so that the takeover occurs immediately (without even one user receiving a 502) error during a shutdown? We aren't looking for real load-balancing, we just want a secondary server to take over while we shutdown the primary. The problem is that whenever the primary goes down, I'm able to slip one invalid request resulting in a 502 HTTP error reaching the end user,before the secondary actually takes over. Apache Conf files: If Hostname=="Web4" Then Use This IP for VirtualHost

I am getting ready to do a "spring cleaning" on the web heads at work. I would really like to put my config files into a git repo, and use the same config files for all the web heads. This is a problem for the sites that are on port 443. Is there anyway to do an if statement or something like that inside the conf file itself? I am trying to avoid writing a script to generate the conf files. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!! Thank you! Jeff

Sticking with Ubuntu 12.04 while heavily using PPA for newest software updates (Apache 2.4, PHP 5.5)

I was wondering whether is it worthwhile to stick with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS until 14.04 comes or should I be switching to just the latest Ubuntu server version 13.10. My server needs are not enterprise heavy and previous thought to keep with LTS was simply to gain the security updates without having to upgrade the servers every couple months. But as we are moving forward with our software development, I have found that alot of the default version of software with 12.04 is way out of the date forcing me to up date via PPA or from source instead of from default apt-get. ie PHP 5.3 is on 12.04, and I'd like to get it to 5.5. Is it worthwhile to simply move to 13.10 in that situation? With the idea to move to 14.04 when it comes?

We have several developers who maintain the system and I want them to easily read the log files in /var/log/httpd without needing root access. How to troubleshoot a PHP script that causes a Segmenation Fault?

I posted this on stackoverflow.com as well because I'm not sure if this is a programming problem or a server problem. I'm using ubuntu 9.10, apache2, mysql5 and php5. I've noticed an unusual problem with some of my php programs. Sometimes when visiting a page like profile.edit.php, the browser throws a dialogue box asking to download profile.edit.php page. When I download it, there's nothing in the file. profile.edit.php is supposed to be a web form that edits user information. I've noticed this on some of my other php pages as well. I look in my apache error logs, and I see a segmentation fault message: [Mon Mar 08 15:40:10 2010] [notice] child pid 480 exit signal Segmentation fault (11) And also, the issue may or may not appear depending on which server I deploy my application too. Additonal Details This doesn't happen all the time though. It only happens sometimes. For example, profile.edit.php will load properly. But as soon as I hit the save button (form action="profile.edit.php?save=true"), then the page asks me to download profile.edit.php. Could it be that sometimes my php scripts consume too much resources? Sample code Upon save action, my profile.edit.php includes a data_access_object.php file. Set up lnux box for hosting a-z

I am in the process of reinstalling the OS on a machine that will be used to host a couple of apps for our business. The apps will be local only; access from external clients will be via vpn only. The prior setup used a hosting control panel (Plesk) for most of the admin, and I was looking at using another similar piece of software for the reinstall - but I figured I should finally learn how it all works. I can do most of the things the software would do for me, but am unclear on the symbiosis of it all. This is all an attempt to further distance myself from the land of Configuration Programmer/Programmer, if at all possible. I can't find a full walkthrough anywhere for what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd put up this question, and if people can help me on the way I will edit this with the answers, and document my progress/pitfalls. Hopefully someday this will help someone down the line. The details: CentOS 5.5 x86_64 httpd: Apache/2.2.3 mysql: 5.0.77 (to be upgraded) php: 5.1 (to be upgraded) The requirements: SECURITY!! Secure file transfer Secure client access (SSL Certs and CA) Secure data storage Virtualhosts/multiple subdomains Local email would be nice, but not critical The Steps: Download latest CentOS DVD-iso (torrent worked great for me). Install CentOS: While going through the install, I checked the Server Components option thinking I was going to be using another Plesk-like admin. In hindsight, considering I've decided to try to go my own way, this probably wasn't the best idea. Basic config: Setup users, networking/ip address etc. Yum update/upgrade. Upgrade PHP: To upgrade PHP to the latest version, I had to look to another repo outside CentOS. IUS looks great and I'm happy I found it! cd /tmp #wget http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/x86_64/epel-release-1-1.ius.el5.noarch.rpm #rpm -Uvh epel-release-1-1.ius.el5.noarch.rpm #wget http://dl.iuscommunity.org/pub/ius/stable/Redhat/5/x86_64/ius-release-1-4.ius.el5.noarch.rpm #rpm -Uvh ius-release-1-4.ius.el5.noarch.rpm yum list | grep -w \.ius\. PHP.ini does not load

Ok this is probably just me not knowing enough about php but here it goes. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy. I have a custom compiled version of PHP which I have compiled with these parameters. ./configure --enable-soap --with-zlib --with-mysql --with-apxs2=[correct path] --with-config-file-path=[correct path] --with-mysqli --with-curlwrappers --with-curl --with-mcrypt I have used the command pecl install pecl_http to install the http.so extension. It is in the correct module directory for my php.ini. My php.ini is loading and I can change things within the ini and effect php. I have included the extension=http.so line in my php.ini. That worked fine. Until I added these compilation options in order to add imap --with-openssl --with-kerberos --with-imap --with-imap-ssl Which failed because I needed the c-client library which I fixed by apt-get install libc-client-dev After which php compiles fine and I have working imap support, woo. HOWEVER, now all my calls to HttpRequest which is part of the pecl_http extention in http.so result in Fatal error: Class 'HttpRequest' not found errors. I figure the http.so module is no longer loading for one reason or another but I cannot find any errors showing the reason. You might say "Have you tried undoing the new imap setup?" To which I will answer. Yes I have. I directly undid all my config changes and uninstalled the c-client library and I still can't get it to work. I thought that's weird... I have made no changes that would have resulted in this issue. After looking at that I have also discovered that not only is the http extension no longer loading but all my extensions loaded via php.ini are no longer loading. Can someone at least give me some further debugging steps? So far I have tried enabling all errors including startup errors in my php.ini which works for other errors, but I'm not seeing any startup errors either on command line or via apache. And yet again the php.ini appears to be being parsed given that if I run php_info() I get settings that are in the php.ini. Edit it appears that only some of the php.ini settings are being listened to. Is there a way to test my php.ini? Edit Edit It appears I am mistaken again and the php.ini is not being loaded at all any longer. However, If I run php_info() I get that it's looking for my php.ini in the correct location. Edit Edit Edit My config is at the config file path location below but it says no config file loaded. WTF Permission issue? It is currently 644 so everyone should be able to read it if not write it. I tried making it 777 and that didn't work. [yes always bursting] The process that consumes most CPU and also most memory is mysql But I also get like 15 httpd processes [when its bursting] I already got warning from cpuwatchcheck saying "While processing, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 07:00:37 up 11:30, 0 users, load average: 14.64, 16.79, 20.07" I don't know, I have tried switching these config values many different times, but nothing seems to work.
