• How to remotely install Linux via SSH?

  I need to remotely install Ubuntu Server 10.04 (x86) on a server currently running RHEL 3.4 (x86). I'll have to be very careful because no one can press the restart button for me if anything goes wrong. Have you ever remotely installed Linux? Which way would you recommend? Any advice for things to watch out? Update: Thanks for your help. I managed to "change the tires while driving"! The main components of my method are drawn from HOWTO - Install Debian Onto a Remote Linux System, grub legacy: Booting once-only, grub single boot and kernel panic reboot , and Ubuntu Community Documentation: InstallationFromKnoppix Here is the outline of what I did: Run debootstrap on an existing Ubuntu server Transfer the files to the swap partition of the RHEL 3.4 server Boot into tha swap partition (the debootstrap system) Transfer the files to the original root partition Boot into the new Ubuntu system and finish up the installation with tasksel, apt-get, etc I tested the method in a VM and then applied to the server. I was lucky enough that everything went smoothly :)

• Is there a free tool/package that can monitor web traffic and display URLS accessed? [closed]

  I couldn't find a similar question but then maybe I am searching for the wrong terms. A few years ago I used a router like device, I'm pretty sure it was a SonicWall, that did this on a clients site. Basically all traffic would be routed through this device and it allowed the manager/administrator to inspect web usage of the workers, determine how often certain resources were accessed and block them if necessary (much like content filter). It showed reports based on domain name reached etc. Facebbok.com, Bebo.com and so on. It also displayed the usual IP traffic information etc. it was a UTM also. I have tried Endian firewall, with it's NTOP install, but I don't think that will show URLs browsed. Maybe I just haven't found it in NTOP yet? I need this to troubleshoot connection and traffic issue at my home, with about twenty devices/users so didn't want to buy a dedicated solution and have spare hardware to use a community product.

• What is the worst Mac OS X annoyance in your opinion?

  I'll start with multi-monitor support. I'm trying to set up a Macbook to use an external display and I can't for the life of me get it to move the Dock over to the external display. That and it won't let me disable the Macbook's internal LCD. Please put one item into each post so that the community can vote on each issue.   These days server naming is a bit of a lost art. Most large organizations don't allow for fanciful names and name their servers with jumbles of digits and letters. In the olden days just about every system administrator came up with a unique naming scheme, well, sometimes unique - many just settled for Star Trek characters. To this day my favorite server name is Qantas - a Unix server that Joel Spolsky has or used to have. Why Qantas? You'd have to ask Rainman. So my question is this - what is the coolest server name or naming convention that you encountered? Let the geekfest begin. • How to connect a remote IP Phone to our VOIP Network?

  We have an IP phone system in our office, and about 8 VoIP phones running on the system. We have a remote worker, who is literally states away. We'd like to connect his phone to our VoIP network, so that he has a business phone and an extension to which we could transfer calls. I was thinking, although I don't know for sure, that a pair of Cisco routers could be used in some way to make this work. I imagine a VPN solution, where I have one router connected to the phone network and the other router connected to the remote phone. Then have a site-to-site VPN set up so that the remote router... And that's where I'm stuck. I know the remote router will need to use the DHCP server of the phone system. I've never set up something like this, so I am seeking the help of the community here. What is the best way to get this remote VoIP phone RELIABLY connected to our internal VoIP network?

I'm still weighing between the two for a ruby web app(not ROR) served with thin server. Specific answer will be much appreciated. General answer not touching the ruby part is okay. • Authentication issues setting up iRedMail on Debian

  I'm setting up an exchange server using iRedMail. Following the official iRedMail installation guide (http://www.iredmail.org/install_iredmail_on_debian.html) and the Digital Ocean guide (https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-iredmail-on-ubuntu-12-04-x64) I was able to install iRedMail without any problems, so I have all the services up and running. I can configure domains and emails using iRedAdmin BUT I have problem both sending and receiving email, what I get from Roundcube is 'Authentication error' when trying to send an email. Also I can't receive anything. I also tried to connect to the mx server using telnet, it connects, but after the STARTTLS command, when I start to write "MAIL FROM:" the connection is lost. Something in the configuration is not working (at the moment I have the configuration written by the iRedMail installation) but I do not know where, I hope someone can enlight me! Thank you

  I am trying to install Ruby on Rails. and i have followed the following link for the install https://www.digitalocean.com/community/articles/how-to-install-ruby-on-rails-on-ubuntu-12-04-lts-precise-pangolin-with-rvm. This link was helpful i was able to run it, and everything, however as soon has i restarted the computer i then go into my apps and run it again with rails s and this message occurs. The program 'rails' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing: sudo apt-get install rails But work before, what should i do, do i need to set the path of somesort?? • There is a commercial tool like Xen + Remus?

  Hello, I have a project where we need a completely redundant system like the one offered by Remus with a Xen virtualization system. I wondered if there is a system like this one built by VMWare or some other company because the project is a very critical one and we do not want to have to wait that a bug is fixed by "the community" and money is not a problem. What Remus does is to build a completely redundant system where you can shutdown one machine and the other continues the work where the other left it maintaining the network connections opened, etc Any hint? • Search Files (Preferably with index) on Windows 2000 Server

  I have many files on a windows server 2000 machine that is setup to act as a networked disk drive, is there anyway I can index the files and make that index available as a search to more people than just me? Bonus if the index can look inside of documents such as readme.txt? If there is no easy way to do this globaly (for all users) Is there a way I could generate and store an index locally on my computer? If this is the wrong place to ask this question, any advice on community more suited?

• Intel hybrid graphics stuck in power save mode

  I have an Asus UL30V with Intel hybrid graphics. When I bought it it used to switch to turn of the better graphics card to save power and run on a more power effecient one. When I connected the laptop to a power source again I could go to the intel graphics icon on the task bar and click on "switch to enhanced performance mode" or something similar. But like 2-3 months ago it suddenly vanished. I cannot switch modes anymore, it's gotten stuck in power save mode. I can change the windows power setting but that doesn't enable the better graphics card :( What should I do? I've tried restarting the computer and that does not work. I really hope I don't have to reinstall the drivers! It seems like other people have had the same issue: http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19422695/19994601.aspx , he hasn't even got the same computer as me. I have windows 7 Home Premium x64 Any ideas?

• What is the best way to back up dedicated web server? (Amanda versus Rsync)

  Hello everyone, I am trying to establish valid back ups for my web server. It is a linux box on CentOS. I have asked around and "rsync" was suggested by some of the server fault community. However, my coworker at work says that this is really only moving over the physical files and isn't really a usable "snapshot." He suggested using "amanda" and that this did full server snapshots that are more what I am accustomed to. I know at my company we have virtual machines that we take snapshots of and we can restore everything back to just as they were with little effort and little downtime. Is this possible with rsync? Or would I need to create a new server and then migrate the files back and do various configurations? I think I prefer being able to just reset everything to a point in time. Forgive my ignorance, Back ups are something that I have never really had to worry about before.

  I am a programmer using Linux as my main OS, however sometimes I need to use windows (ie, office, ea). I'm running qemu with kvm to access the windows "machine". I would like to achieve something that is described here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SeamlessVirtualization (It means I would be able to run chosen applications on Windows and then display them locally on Linux as separate windows achieving good desktop integration). However seamless rdp is buggy and doesn't work on my machine (probably because I'm using a tiling window manager and a 64bit system). Are you aware of any other solution then rdp seamless mode? I would prefer to still use quemu because it uses cpu hardware virtualization, so different protocol/client combination would be preferable.

• Is it possible to avoid umask 0002?

  Is it possible to give an automatic ability to modify files(folders and all recursively) created by one user to another within one specified folder (let's say "shared") on the basis of both users belonging to the same secondary group (let's say "coworkers")? I've tried to achieve this by using ACL but with no success. Seems that umask wipes out corresponding bits.... I'm on FreeBSD 8.1 (but seems this problem is actual for other *NIX systems). • X server not starting up after new kernel compilation

  I have compiled the Kernel on my 64-bit Debian XPS Studio 1340 Dell system. srikanth@debian:~ - 05:40:52 PM - $ uname -a Linux debian 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Thu Mar 22 17:26:33 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux Kernel version that I have used and compiled from kernel.org is 2.6.35.13 I have nvidia installed on old kernel. I got the old config and I used the same config to compile the new kernel. Everything went well and I got two debian packages ( image and headers ) which I have installed on my system. When I select the new kernel on the boot menu and I go into it, the X server is not starting up possibly because I have to "rebuild" ( not sure how to do that ) according to this link: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/slackware-14/x-server-not-starting-after-kernel-compilation-605265/ Can you suggest how to do the rebuild on nvidia module so that I can start x ( without seeing any blank screen or error saying nvidia module is missing ) ? • What video codecs have most amount of content and thus popular at present/in future?

  Hi, I want to find out if I can get some data on the percentage wise distribution of video content, for different video codecs currently used for video encoding. I know there are different applications/use-case scenarios which have different encoder used but i want to consdier all that and have a overall usage number(%) My guess is(highest to lowest % of content) - H.264(AVC) DivX MPEG2 VP6 Where do H.263, MPEG4, VC-1, RV, Theora, etc. fit in here. • Best Practice: Migrating Email Boxes (maildir format)

  So here's the situation. I've got about 20,000 maildir email accounts chewing up a several hundred GB of space on our email server. Maildir by nature keeps thousands of tiny a** little files, instead of one .mbox file or the like... So i need to migrate all of these several millions of files from one server to the other, for both space and life-cycle reasons. the conventional methods i would use all work just fine. rsync is the option that comes immediately to mind, however i wanted to see if there are any other "better" options out there. Rsync not handling multi-threaded transfers in this situation sucks because it never actually gets up to speed and saturates my network connection, because of this the transfer from one server to another will take hours beyond hours, when it shouldn't really take more then one or two. I know this is highly opinionated and subjective and will therefore be marked community wiki.

Since sftp-server is running as a regular user, it has no way to "give away" a file (change owner of a file). However, if you are able to use scp, and assign a key pair to each user, you can get around this. This involves adding a user's key to root's ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file, with a "command=" parameter to force it to run a script that sanitizes and alters the arguments of the server-side scp program. I've used this technique before to set up an anonymous scp dropbox that allowed anyone to submit a file, and ensure that no one could retrieve submitted files and also prevent overwrites.   I have an Access 2003 database. When I click on a pivot table, I get this message MS Access There isn't enough memory to complete the Automation object operation on the worksheet object. There is a lot of discussion concerning this message. Are there instructions -- I cannot currently find them and would very much appreciate a link -- on dealing with this problem in a nice stepwise fashion?

  Recently I've had to uninstall a single Self-Signed SSL Certificate from one of my Apache boxes, specifically for an outside party. That's not really a problem for me, since it was easy. What confuses me is how they knew I had a self-signed certificate. The domain I provided them was not related to the domain with the self-signed certificate. Does this mean Apache publicizes the Virtual hosts in the httpd.conf file?   I have read several posts regarding restricting ALL users to Key authentication ONLY, however I want to force only a single user (svn) onto Key auth only, the rest can be key or password. I read How to disable password authentication for every users except several, however it seems the "match user" part of sshd_config is part of openssh-5.1. I am running CentOS 5.6 and only have OpenSSH 4.3. I have the following repos available at the moment. $ yum repolist Loaded plugins: fastestmirror repo id repo name status base CentOS-5 - Base enabled: 3,535 epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 5 - x86_64 enabled: 6,510 extras CentOS-5 - Extras enabled: 299 ius IUS Community Packages for Enterprise Linux 5 - x86_64 enabled: 218 rpmforge RHEL 5 - RPMforge.net - dag enabled: 10,636 updates CentOS-5 - Updates enabled: 720 repolist: 21,918 I mainly use epel, rpmforge is used to the latest version (1.6) of subversion. Is there any way to achieve this with my current setup? I don't want to restrict the server to keys only because if I lose my key I lose my server ;-)

• Odd SVN Checkout failures occur frequenctly on VMWare virtual machines

  We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? • Change Block Tracking settings not retained for a VM on VMWare 5.5

  I'm trying to enable Change Block Tracking as per this VMWare KB article but the setting ctkEnabled is not being retained in the advanced options or being added to the vmx file. The setting scsi0:0.ctkEnabled is being retained and I see a file vmname-ctk.vmdk in the datastore. I've verified that the vm doesn't have any snapshots but don't see any other suggestions in the KB (or google, of course.) Edit: The last comment on this community post. It's a slightly different circumstance, but suggests that there is an known bug editing these settings in the web-gui.
