• SMTP Verb Error on MSExchange Server 2003

  Hi, Every morning for the last two weeks or more I've had to reboot our Exchange Server and often I have to reboot it again during the day. We use a smarthost for sending our mail out and if I view the queues on Exhange System Manager the Small Business SMTP Connector is in a retry state with "The connection was dropped due to an SMTP protocol event sink". I turned logging up to maximum on ExchangeTransport and the only non-information event in EventViewer is “Message delivery to the host '62.13.128.187' failed while delivering to the remote domain 'mail.authsmtp.com' for the following reason: The connection was dropped due to an SMTP protocol event sink. The SMTP verb which caused the error is 'x-exps'. The response from the remote server is ''.” I stopped using the smarthost during the error condition and all I got was lots of small business connector connections with the same error. I can telnet into mail.authsmtp.com and send a mail during the error state. Any pointers would be gratefully received.

• How to transition to Comcast with static IP address [migrated]

  I have my own email server in my house, on a static IP address. I have had business DSL for over a decade, but I also now have Comcast business Internet. I want to transition from the DSL to the Comcast, and I have some questions. I have a domain name, my own mail server, and a firewall (a PC with two network interfaces, running Devil-Linux). I need to make sure I understand how to set up the Comcast cable box, and how to set up my firewall. First, do I need to change any settings in the cable box? Currently I have only used the cable box by plugging in a laptop, with the laptop doing DHCP. I think I can leave the box alone but I would like to make sure. Second, I'm not sure I understand the instructions Comcast gave me for setting up the firewall. My DSL provider gave me the following information: static IP address, net mask, gateway, and two DNS servers. Comcast gave me: static IP address, routable static IP address, net mask, and two DNS servers, and told me to put the "static IP address" as the "gateway" on the firewall. Is this just Comcast-speak here? Does "routable static IP address" mean the same thing as "static IP address" in my DSL setup, the end-point address that I should publish in the DNS MX records for my email server? Or should I publish the "static IP address", and Comcast will then route all its traffic over the cable box? My plan is: first, I'm going to configure another firewall, so I have one firewall for the DSL and one for the Comcast (rather than madly editing settings to switch back and forth). Then I will publish the new Comcast static IP address as a backup email server address in the DNS MX records, wait a while to let it propagate, and then switch my home over from the DSL to the Comcast. Then I'll change DNS to make that the primary mail address and the DSL the secondary, let that go a while and make sure it seems reliable. Then I'll remove the DSL from the DNS MX records completely, and finally shut down the DSL service. (I thought about keeping the DSL as a backup, but the reason I'm leaving DSL is that it has become unreliable; and I have heard that Comcast business Internet is reliable.) Final question, any advice for me? Anything you think might be useful, helpful, or educational. Thanks.

• Setting up a Windows Server 2008 R2 DC + Fileserver : native or virtual?

  I want to deploy a new DC + Fileserver using Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard Edition on a Dell PowerEdge R410 and iSCSI storage for a small business (~30 people). Should I install the system native on the server or use a virt layer? I don't have a budget for virtualization so i gotta go with something free... What's a better working routine, taking snapshots of vm's or taking backups (Acronis/CloneZilla) of systems? If I use a virt system, I need a GUI for some people in the business to reset the system to a earlier state in emergency situations.   Hiya, I'm trying to find an integrated PM solution which will give my business all of the following: Timesheeting so we can track time spent on tasks Holiday planner (integrated with timesheet and project management Project management tool, integrating the above, with milestones, gantt chart, dependancies etc. Forecasting ability (nice to have, but not a requirement) Reporting capability - especially time spent on projects, costs etc. Now yeah, that's quite a lot of functionality, I appreciate that! But currently we've got 3 systems, none of which really talk to each other and it's a right headache. So far we've looked at: OpenWorkbench - not enough features Basecamp - not enough features and too reliant on online MS Project - too expensive?   Is there a way of offering Skype access to incoming calls while keeping all telephony traffic over our chosen business telephony provision? Is there a 3rd party who can route incoming Skype calls to our telephone system? The business has had requests from contacts wanting to call us via Skype, but we want to keep all telephony via our PBX and phone lines as our geographic location limits our available internet bandwidth. We also prevent installation of non-standard applications on desktops and do not want to add Skype to our build. I was wondering if there were any 3rd parties that provide a connection service that would allow our contacts to call via Skype and us receive the calls via our phone system.

  Client has got many sub-offices, and one head office. Headoffice has a domain name: business.com all users in the many sub-offices need to have a headoffice email address: [email protected] Anyone not in head office will need the email forwarded to an external email address. All users in head office will have their email delivered to exchange. Users are listed in active directory under 2 different OU's. "HeadOffice" or "SubOffice".   I see time and time again such services running in a business environment with only 10 users. Everyone in the office authenticates with the DC and interacts with a shared drive where files and documents are stored. I can't help but think...reeeeealy? But I don't know, that's why I'm asking. To me it seems like you need to reach a certain threshold of size and needs before you throw a DC into the mix. ie: a 20+ user business (and growing) with permission requirements that separate the sales team from accounting. Thoughts?

• Multi Monitor setup goes crazy after locking/unlocking Vista machine

  Give me a 10-blade quad-processor quad-core Opteron centre and ask me to configure failover/load balancing and I'd be happy to, but the following problem has got me completely stumped. My Vista Business Professional machine, running Ultramon, has three monitors attached. When I lock the machine (to go to the delicious cafe around the corner), the monitor layout stays correct. When I unlock it, I watch as all my screens flicker (as they are being re-configured), and Vista chooses some crazy layout for the monitors. The most recent one is below, but it's never consistant. Any ideas what might cause this? It's Vista Business, with UltraMon 3.0 (exiting Ultramon makes no difference).

  Hi everyone, We have a bunch of (virtual vmware) windows servers (2003 and 2008) that our hosting provider wants to move to a new domain. They also want to rename the servers. The hosting provider is in charge of maintaining the servers, while we are in charge of making sure that all our business applications are working. Our business applications include custom developed .net applications using such things as SQLServer 2008, TFS 2010, asp.net, some legacy COM+ apps, etc. To be honest I don't feel too convinced that this migration will be as painless as the hosting provider wants to make it sound. I would greatly appreciate any input on what we should be aware of when discussing the practicalities involved in the migration with the hosting provider. Thanks in advance. Klaus

• How to find ip address of my Asus RT-AC86U in Access Point mode?

  I'm using an Asus wireless router model RT-AC68U and can connect fine to the internet using it wirelessly. I configured the router to be an Access Point, but having done so, I can no longer locate the GUI to adjust the router as I have no idea what its IP Address is anymore. The router is plugged into a cable modem and router which is a model SMCD3G is a business class gateway labeled Comcast Business IP Gateway. This gateway is assigning ip addresses in the range 10.1.10.XX and I went to the web interface at 10.1.10.1 and listed the connected devices and see my laptop which is connected to the Asus access point along with a few other devices, but none of the devices listed are the Asus router (I tried all the six ip addresses listed). How can I determine the IP Address of my Asus router in access point mode so I can see the GUI interface again to control the router other than by doing a factory reset?

  I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to to discuss this issue but I am a Magento developer and ever since they announced they were going to build magento as a PAAS platform, I began to not trust where they are trying to go with the company. As a business I respect where they are trying to go as a company, but as a developer who highly depends on their platform for my business, I feel that they will eventually become a player in their own game. Ebay has announced that they will be acquiring the license to the magento platform and this makes you wonder why a company like eBay would want to do such a thing. Ebay is known for their pre-built stores. it would seem they would only team with magento only to utilize their PAAS web stores. I dunno, maybe I am a little confused about the whole situation. that's why i would like to hear everyone else opinion.

• Error when running adprep32 /rodcprep, trying to add a 2008 domain controller to a 2003 domain

  I'm trying to migrate a Small Business Server 2003 to Server 2008 domain. The problem is when I run the adprep32 /rodcprep command as specified as the final step in Step 3 of this article: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Server_Software/Email_Servers/Exchange/A_2881-Migrate-Small-Business-Server-2003-to-Exchange-2010-and-Windows-2008-R2.html I get an error "Adprep could not contact a replica for partition..." which is described in detail here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949257 I've also attached the AdPrep.log file for full details. So when I try to run DCPromo on my new Server 2008 PDC (it's not the PDC yet, but want it to be soon), I get an error saying that /rodcprep hasn't ran so there could be errors if I continue. Anyone ran into this or have any suggestions on how to help? Can Dsmgmt be ran on server 2003 to help solve this? Assuming it's a partition error.

• Appropriate Network switch for small server cluster

  Need to build a small business server cluster for the purpose of crunching data. It will not host a web site that needs to be available 24/7. It does need to support servers that host Redis, a Cassandra database cluster, and a Python web server. Operating system will most likely be Centos 6.4 Other servers in the cluster should be able to communicate very fast with each other, especially the Redis server. This will probably require the use of internal IP addresses. We will need to use multi-data center replication to synchronize the Cassandra cluster with the one that we currently have hosted on the cloud Was looking into network switches and we are unsure of the appropriate specifications that we should be looking for. Does the switch need to be "managed" or can it be "unmanged"? Does the switch need to support IPv6 or just IPv4? Do we need an enterprise level Cisco switch, or can we go with something like a $200 DLink managed (or unmanaged) small business switch? Thanks so much!

  I belong to an independent IT firm that manages and maintains about 50 business clients networks, ranging from small 5 system networks to 200+ systems. Because we are unable to directly monitor each server at these locations (distributed over a very large area) on a regular basis I am looking for a method to monitor and alert us to any problems that may arise so that we can respond quickly with, hopefully, preventative measures. I'm not sure what solutions are available for this type of situation, but something that utilizes a central server at our business with all client servers sending alerts or logs to it for daily monitoring might work best. • Vista to Vista network visability issue

  Hi All, I've got a Vista Business PC and a Vista Business Laptop connected via a virgin media router (Netgear CG2100D) and I cannot get the two machines to see each other correctly over the network. The laptop is connected via wireless, whilst the pc is wired. Both are set to recieve their network settings automatically (DHCP) and both have the windows firewall (the only firewall on either) turned off completely. I can ping each machine fine from one another using the ip addresses, and I can also connect via \. However, connections via \ fail, and I cannot see the machines in the network map. I have tried turning netBIOS to be "always on" on both adapters, but this makes no difference. I've been messing around pretty much for 6 hours now and am getting quite fustrated by this! (my original aim was to get media sharing working, but I've pretty much abandoned that for now). Any ideas?

  I am new to configuring routers. We have purchased a RV016 Cisco business router that has multiwan capability. What we are attempting to do is take map services from 3 different servers and assign 3 different static IP addresses and then forward port 80 through the router. A short term solution to building a proxy server. Is this possible? Right now we have a consumer grade Cisco router and assign a static IP and it works, we attempted the same settings on the business router and cannot get to the internet. We set it DHCP and it works fine, however we want to to forward the static ports not use DHCP.

  I've got access to my "own" FreeBSD jail. The jail has only basic, unconfigured system, but I have full access to FreeBSD ports, and (jail)root too. Now I need to setup my jail as IMAP/MTA. The question: What packages are EASIEST for config and later administration, (the simplest possible setup, with the minimum needed configuration) when: i haven't any preferences (don't know any yet) my (one) domain is managed by ISP, so don't need DNS need only IMAP for few users (up to 20 mailboxes) need secure transport layer (IMAPS/993) password auth, no LDAP, no kerberos, nor databases, nothing like fancy things... need easy-setup easy-admin MTA, with simplest possible password SMTP auth, (again no LDAP, nor DB), secure transport layer but would be nice have virus-scan and some anti-spam protection So, what ports I should install for MTA and IMAP? MTA (Sendmail, Postfix, Exim)? antivirus (ClamAV) antispam??? IMAP(S), (Dovecot, Courier) when the main criteria are: easy setup, and easy administration. When I googled I found only complicated setups for thousands of users with LDAP, databases and so on - too big-caliber for my small (easy?) needs. Any pointer to an easy howto is very welcomed.

• Web Content Filtering for Windows Clients

  I'm working with a small business to solve a bunch of problems. One is their Windows 7 POS registers need to have web access restricted to only three remote support sites, but the back office machine needs an unfiltered connection. I'd like something I can install and configure on the few registers to block all but those few sites. In a perfect world this would restrict the normal register user, but the admin user would not be filtered. Free is best, if it works, but a small fee would be alright too. Microsoft's Family Safety filter is close, but requires a Windows Live account, which isn't ideal, but may be alright. Anyone use this in a small business environment? I'd prefer something easily managed at the local machines. K9 Web Protection is interesting and I'm going to look into it more. Are there other options? Seems like someone would have made something simple like this as an open source project, but maybe not.
