  • Extensive use of HDD after VmWare Player virtual machine is closed.

    Each time I close virtual machine in VmWare Player I see extensive use of HDD in my system. Basically, whole system becomes unresponsive for about 5-7 minutes. Host system is Windows 7 Utimate x64 SP1 with 6 GB of memory, i3-M350 processor. Virtual machine is Windows XP SP3 x86 (2GB of memory allocated for VM). What can be the cause and what can I do to solve the issue? UPDATE: I am not shutting down the VM, I just close Player window and VM saves it's state. System becomes unresponsive right after VM have saved it state (as indicated by Player) and Player itself have closed.

    I've got a computer running under the OS "Window Server 2008 R2" on which i have : 60GB disk C: NTFS (Disk 0) 40GB unallocated memory (Disk 1) I would like to partition my disk so that i'll have : 30GB disk C: 70GB disk D: Can you help me on the step i should do to be abble to have this configuration ? I saw that first of all i should merge the two volumes into one, but when i click right on the c: Volume, i can't click on the "Extend Volume" link. Do you know how i can overcome this ?   • Uptime concerns in case of AWS outage

    I am running an Elastic Load Balancer backup by 2 instances in different Availability Zones in US East. I am using Multi-AZ RDS as well. Ideally this should ensure that if one AZ goes down, it should not effect the app because everything is spread across multiple AZs. But the recent AWS outage took the app down for a long time. I am not sure how this can happen. It would be great if someone can point out what went wrong. Major question here I have is how can I avoid this in future? I can setup app servers across different regions or even providers and use DNS for load balancing but what do I do with MySQL? Read Replicas will introduce some lag which I would want to avoid.

  • Windows 8 "ate" 100GB of my SSD

    Yesterday I've done a completely fresh Windows 8 Pro install on brand new Samsung SSD. I recall that just after the installation Windows was taking about 10GB. I've installed all the updates and when today I entered My Computer I've almost got a heart attack: disk C: 12.3 GB free of 118 GB! The file explorer, when I enter the disk highlight everything and go to Properties, tells me that the files in there take only 22.5 GB of space which seems reasonable. So where is my 100 GB?

  • External HDD connecting via USB disconnects wireless LAN connection

    Strange problem. I have this MEDION Akoya PC that has a dedicated bay to slide an external HDD sold separately. It's very handy indeed cause the slot is providing a fast USB 3 connection and power to the HDD unit, without extra cables. All works fine except this show-stopper behavior to disconnect me from the router once I slide in the unit and it powers up. The moment I connect the unit the (normally) three-four WiFi connections I see in my neighborhood disappear and my own to the router loses its signal strength (no Internet traffic is possible). After a while it throws me off that one as well, never to connect me again as long as the unit is powered. Once I disconnect the HDD the various signals come back and it automatically reconnects to my own. What takes? Are we in front of a serious design fault by MEDION here? Does the spinning of the HDD on top of the PC cause electromagnetic interference strong enough to throw off my WiFi connectivity? Is it a simple USB problem? Some kind of strange hardware conflict? Where should I look?

    Ok so i used xp for years before i was able to get my hands on the Windows7 RC which i bought a new HDD for, and then followed the process to dual-boot. About a month ago xp started acting funny and i thought the disk might be dying. So i started using Windows7 all the time. Today i start the computer and it cant find the disk which xp was on anymore. I guess its dead. So i remove the xp HD and my computer cant start...insert bootable disk or something similar So how can i remove the primary(dead) xp disk and boot straight to Windows 7?

    i have found tutorials on their official forum and on the internet about how to make a truecrypt rescue bootable usb stick. I'm guessing anyone who can answer will know what that is already, but it is basically just a way to boot into the system using a usb stick instead of a DVD. But the only problem is all of these tutorials involve using Grub4Dos, and i cannot run Grub4Dos on 64 bit windows 7. Is there any other alternative method? Thanks!

    I recently had a problem with .xsession-errors file - it became very big ( 90GB) and took all disk space: How I can check what takes disk space in /tmp?. I cleaned it with command > .xsession-errors but after an hour it became large again.   • Vostro 1520 crash during bios update

    My Vostro 1520 (P8700 C2D) originally came with BIOS A02. This bios version have known problems with VT, so I had to upgrade to A05. During the upgrade, the notebook crashed. Needless to say, it won't boot anymore. The simple question is: is there a way to access the bios boot block to recover the bad flash with a crisis disk? I know that the MINI and the ALIENWARE models have this feature, but I can't seem to find anything about it in the Vostro machines. Any help will be much appreciated. PS: Dell's solution is to change the motherboard, but it will take several days, as the board isn't available in my country :( Regards, Deadmilkman

  • Hard Reset USB in Ubuntu 10.04

    I have a USB device (a modem) that is really finicky. Sometimes it works fine, but other times it refuses to connect. The only solution I have found to fix it once it gets into a bad state is to physically unplug the device and plug it back in. However, I don't always have physical access to the machine it is plugged in on, so I'm looking for a way to do this through the command line. This post suggests running: $ sudo modprobe -w -r usb_storage; sudo modprobe usb_storage However I get an "unknown option -w" output. This slightly modified command: $ sudo modprobe -r usb_storage Fails with the message FATAL: Module usb_storage is in use. If I try to kill -9 the processes marked [usb-storage] before running they refuse to die (I think because they are deeply tied to the kernel). Anyone know of a way to do this? NOTE: I cross-posted this on serverfault as I didn't know which was more appropriate. I will delete and/or link whichever one is answered first.

    Hi I wanted to reformat my HP 500GB hard disk to MS DOS (FAT) by using Disk Utility but Disk Utility kept saying that the hard disk cannot be unmounted. I tried googling it but nothing seems to answer my question. I'm not trying to reformat the hard disk in my Mac but my external hard disk! I usually format my hard disks to clear the documents I no longer need. And I'll change it to ExFat but currently, whenever I plug in my hard disk on Windows, the whole system just hangs there. Can someone help??

  • My laptop keeps hard resetting

    I have had this laptop for a long time (five years at least) and it hasn't had the best treatment over the years. But over the last few months, it has been randomly completely shutting down, no blue screening, no steady shutdown, just black screen, then BIOS. I think it might be happening as I do a save, but cant be sure, but recently it has been getting very annoying. I did initially think it was an overheating issue, but the speed that it comes back online is staggeringly fast for it to have cooled down sufficiently. plus it has got incredibly hot before with no issue (since its been doing this). Does anyone know what might be going on? Dell Inspiron 640m, running Windows 7.

  • I suspect that my HDD is causing hardlocks, as all other components have been replaced. How can I check this theory and solve the potential cause?

    I have had this problem over quite a while now, thorough multiple Linux kernel versions and distributions, as well as replacement of all components, aside from my main HDD - RAM, GPU(twice), mother board, CPU, power supply. What happens is, at one point during the operation of the PC, it will hardlock - everything stops working, external HDD is not shut down correctly and continues to spin until I plug it out and in, there are no system/kernel logs of any kind, and no otherwise nothing that would suggest a cause. Another reason for my suspicion is that the failures happen almost exclusively during HDD read/write activity - shutdown(happens nearly 1/3 of the time so far, it's only been few days though), launching programs, and once during operation of apt. I hope the post is descriptive enough, if you need any additional info, ask(and tell me how to prepare/obtain it), and I will provide. If I'm wrong, point me in the right direction.   • Disk (EXT4) suddenly empty without any sign of why

    I have a Ubuntu 10.04 server with several disks in it. The disks are setup with a union filesystem, which presents them all as one logical /home. A few days ago, one of the disks appears to have suddenly 'become empty', for lack of better explanation. The amount of data on the /home mount almost halved within minutes - the disk appears to have had just over 400 GB of data prior to 'becoming empty'. I have absolutely no idea what happened. I was not using the server at the other time, but there are half a dozen other users who may have been (without root access and without the ability to hose a whole disk). I've ran SMART tests on the disk and it comes back clean. The filesystem checks fine (it has 12 GB used now, as some user software continued downloading after the incident). All I know is that around around midnight on October 19, the disk usage changed dramatically: The data points are every 15 minutes, and the full loss occured between captures: 2012-10-18 23:58:03.399647 - has 953.97/2059.07 GB [46.33 percent] 2012-10-19 00:13:15.909010 - has 515.18/2059.07 GB [25.02 percent] Other than that, I have not much to go off :-( I know that: There's nothing interesting in log files at that time Nobody appeared to be logged in via SSH at the time it occured (most users do not even use SSH) The server was online through whatever occured (3 months uptime) None of the other disks were affected and everything else on the server looks completely normal I have tried using "extundelete" on the disk and it didn't really find anything (some temporary files, but they looked new anyway) I am completely at a loss to what could have caused this. I was initially thinking maybe root escalation exploit, but even if someone did maliciously "rm" the disk contents, it would take more than 15 minutes for 400 GB?

    3 years ago a co-worker setup a software RAID-6 array on Ubuntu 9.04 and I'm getting messages from the OS that the drive has bad sectors and should be replaced. I'd like to remove this drive and replace it with a new drive, however, I have never done this before and I'm terrified that in the process of fixing the array I'm going to end up ruining it. I know the device ID of the array and I know the device IDs of the individual drives in the array. Additionally I physically have the bad drive. What are the steps to replace the bad drive with a new drive and get the array running again?

    I have an external harddisk and my friends asked for it. The point is I don't trust in his anti-virus software. Is there anyway to allow some folders (I prepare hdd space for him) to write-able and all others is read-only ? or is there a software that can do like this ? And it would be great if I can have full access on my computer ONLY (may be with some specific software on my PC) and without having to modify anything. I don't ask for hdd-encryption since I only want to limit the area of write-able folder (and allow my friend to read through all my data), later I can scan for virus myself only in that area ... scanning entire hdd with 500gb/friend is not fun at all !     Hello! We currently use smartd to monitor SMART health on our disks. I would like to set the 'thresholds' that smartd uses to report. For example: 197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0012 100 100 000 Old_age Always - 9 198 Offline_Uncorrectable 0x0010 100 100 000 Old_age Offline - 9 I would like to be able to set a threshold for these two attributes to only report if they are above 10. I haven't been able to find a way to set this via smartd.conf, and I'm also not looking to actually shutdown the daemon. Has anyone ever tried this, or know how I might be able to accomplish this better then throwing a script into cron.hourly?

  • Is there a way to read the contents of the master boot record?

    Reading another question on here it made me curious if it's possible to actually read the contents of the mbr. As I understand it, there's a certain area at the very front of the partition that lists this information. I'm curious if it's sort of like an ini file or some sort of script that runs and tells the computer what it needs to know about where to boot from and other information like sectors, heads, cylinders that's important. I don't know much about what would be in it, but I thought it'd be interesting to learn more about the specifics.

    Building my FIRST computer. Will start with at least - one HDD, I purchased a WD SATA HDD a 10,000RPM VelociRaptor 500GB. I have read that if you use one of the settings, can't remember what it's called, that it would make an HDD rund at IDE speeds??? Could I or should I run it in RAID instead? Is RAID only for more than one HDD/ssd? I would like to get like a 64GB SSD later to maybe speed things up working together. Thanks

    I've had my HDD replaced, and now my computer is freezing every 1 to 5 minutes for 5 to 10 seconds. Actually, only active applications freeze (but it can be ANY application), usually when I click something, but sometimes by themselves. How can I check if this is HDD issue or software issue? I don't want to send my laptop for second HDD replacement right away, since the last service took 40 days, so I am looking for a tool that could confirm that this is a HDD issue.

  • How do I force an exchange database to become "active"?

    We had a catastrophic failure where all that remains is a single edb file. No backups. No log files. The database that remains is on the "passive" copy. The "active" copy is missing, but the server is active. The Exchange console reports that the edb file needs to be reseeded, however there is no source to reseed from. How do I make the "invalid" database file (missing logs) valid? How do I make exchange recognize this as a valid database to use as a primary?
