• Why is sqrt() not a method on Float?

  In Ruby everything is an object. That's why I don't understand why we have the Math module. It seems to me that most (all?) of the functions in the Math module should have been methods on the numeric types like Integer, Float and so on. E.g. instead of Math.sqrt(5) it would make more sense to have 5.sqrt The same goes for sin, cos, tan, log10 and so on. Does anyone know why all these functions ended up in the Math module?

  Say we have an 8-bit unsigned integer n (UINT8_MAX=255); what is the behavior of the compiler for n=256? Where can I find a table of default behavior when the value of a data type is out of range for different data types?   Hello. well.. I use red5 and setting/getting attributes using the IConnection class but tha's really not relevant. 'L' means long in java. so 0L is 0 type Long instead of just '0' which is 0 type Integer. the following error message: stack trace: java.lang.ClassCastException: [Ljava.lang.Long; cannot be cast to java.lang.Long what's the difference between [Ljava.lang.Long and java.lang.Long ? thanks!

• Function for averages of tuples in a dictionary

  I have a string, dictionary in the form: ('the head', {'exploded': (3.5, 1.0), 'the': (5.0, 1.0), "puppy's": (9.0, 1.0), 'head': (6.0, 1.0)}) Each parentheses is a tuple which corresponds to (score, standard deviation). I'm taking the average of just the first integer in each tuple. I've tried this: def score(string, d): for word in d: (score, std) = d[word] d[word]=float(score),float(std) if word in string: word = string.lower() number = len(string) return sum([v[0] for v in d.values()]) / float(len(d)) if len(string) == 0: return 0 When I run: print score('the head', {'exploded': (3.5, 1.0), 'the': (5.0, 1.0), "puppy's": (9.0, 1.0), 'head': (6.0, 1.0)}) I should get 5.5 but instead I'm getting 5.875. Can't figure out what in my function is not allowing me to get the correct answer.

  unichar myChar = [myString characterAtIndex:0]; [myNSMutableArray addObject:myChar]; I am trying to insert the first char of a string into an array, to create an array of chars. the first line does not give me an error. The second line however, provides the following error: warning: passing argument 1 of 'addObject:' makes pointer from integer without a cast This also crashes the application with a "bad address" error. I thought this error was due to a problem with memory allocation. Can someone shed some light on this.

• Add database to plesk domain account via XML

  Hi All, I'm currently working on trying to integrate a site with Plesk via the XML API and I've run into a bit of an issue. I've managed to get most things working but I'm trying to add a database to a domain and I keep getting an error. When creating the database I extract a list of Domain Accounts associated with the current clients account, and use the domain guid that is returned in the XML to try and create the new database, but Plesk is returning an error stating that the id I am using is not a valid id. I've looked at the documentation and it is saying that the domain ID that I should be sending is an integer, but the only ID I can find for the domain is the guid, which is a string. Anyone done anything like this before and know where I can get the ID from?

I was wondering how to do this when the objects in question inherit from a common base class with a type parameter. public abstract class Rule<T> { ... } public abstract class TimeRule extends Rule<XTime> { ... } public abstract class LocationRule extends Rule<Location> { ... } public abstract class IntRule extends Rule<Integer> { ... } .... (where XTime and Location are custom classes define elsewhere) How would I go about constructing an XSD that such that I can have XML nodes that represent each of the subclasses of Rule<T> - without the XSD for each of them repeating their common contents?   I have a 32 Bit number and want to count know how many bits are 1. I'm thinking of this pseudocode: mov eax, [number] while(eax != 0) { div eax, 2 if(edx == 1) { ecx++; } shr eax, 1 } Is there a more efficient way? I'm using NASM on a x86 processor. (I'm just beginning with assembler, so please do not tell me to use code from extern libraries, because I do not even know how to include them ;) ) (I just found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/109023/best-algorithm-to-count-the-number-of-set-bits-in-a-32-bit-integer which also contains my solution. There are other solutions posted, but unfortunatly I can't seem to figure out, how I would write them in assembler)

  Well, I am wondering about a thing with rounding decimals, and storing them in DB. Problem is like this: Let's say we have a customer and a invoice. The invoice has total price of $100.495 (due to some discount percentage which is not integer number), but it is shown as $100.50 (when rounded, just for print on invoice). It is stored in the DB with the price of $100.495, which means that when customer makes a deposit of $100.50 it will have $0.005 extra on the account. If this is rounded, it will appear as $0, but after couple of invoices it would keep accumulating, which would appear wrong (although it actually is not). What is best to do in this case. Store the value of $100.50, or leave everything as-is?

• MySQL : incrementing text id in DB

  I need to have text IDs in my application. For example, we have acceptable charset azAZ09, and allowed range of IDs [aaa] - [cZ9]. First generated id would be aaa, then aab, aac, aad e.t.c. How one can return ID & increment lower bound in transaction-fashion? (provided that there are hundreds of concurrent requests and all should have correct result) To lower the load I guess it's possible to define say 20 separate ranges, and return id from random range - this should reduce contention, but it's not clear how to do single operation in the first place. Also, please note that number of IDs in range might exceed 2^32. Another idea is having ranges of 64-bit integers, and converting integer-char id in software code, where it could be done asyncroniously. Any ideas?

  Hi, In my current project, I have to compare 128bit values (actually md5 hashes) and I thought it would be possible to accelerate the comparison by using SSE instructions. My problem is that I can't manage to find good documentation on SSE instructions; I'm searching for a 128bit integer comparison instruction that let me know if one hash is larger, smaller or equal to another. Does such an instruction exists? PS: The targeted machines are x86_64 servers with SSE2 instructions; I'm also interested in a NEON instruction for the same job.

• C Builder TForm not allocated or created properly all its controls

  Hi, I would know how i can check that all the controls on the form is created and initialized. I have form i am showing when user presses the 'update' button. It have only TProgressBar control. The handle is not NULL for this control and at random stages it can or can't set the Position/Max values. When i set TProgressBar-Max value to some integer it remains 0 after. So the question is: 1) How to really create the form and all controls on it (i am currently using just Form-Show() method, which as i can check calls the constructor) 2) How to check that all controls on the form is created and PAINTED (showed) Thanks

• Space requirements of a merge-sort

  I'm trying to understand the space requirements for a Mergesort, O(n). I see that time requirements are basically, amount of levels(logn) * merge(n) so that makes (n log n). Now, we are still allocating n per level, in 2 different arrays, left and right. I do understand that the key here is that when the recursive functions return the space gets deallocated, but I'm not seeing it too obvious. Besides, all the info I find, just states space required is O(n) but don't explain it. • Which database engines support IP addresses as a native type?

  I'm trying to find databases with support for IP addresses as a native type (as opposed to storing as a string, or an unsigned integer, which at least one commenter has already pointed out won't work for IPv6). The primary reason I'm looking for this is ease of development. For example, sorting on a "native" IP address column would be correct (as opposed to when it's stored as a string). I would assume support for such a type would also include useful operations such as determining if an IP address is inside a specified network for use in WHERE clauses. The only one I'm aware of so far is PostgreSQL with its inet class. Does anyone have any others?

  If all that you're doing is a simple one-pass iteration (i.e. only hasNext() and next(), no remove()), are you guaranteed linear time performance and/or amortized constant cost per operation? Is this specified in the Iterator contract anywhere? Are there data structures/Java Collection which cannot be iterated in linear time? java.util.Scanner implements Iterator<String>. A Scanner is hardly a data structure (e.g. remove() makes absolutely no sense). Is this considered a design blunder? Is something like PrimeGenerator implements Iterator<Integer> considered bad design, or is this exactly what Iterator is for? (hasNext() always returns true, next() computes the next number on demand, remove() makes no sense). Similarly, would it have made sense for java.util.Random implements Iterator<Double>?

Now what I am trying to do is in a report I have the top 5 people who have visited the site and would like to then be able to drill down into what lessons they have clicked on.   Hello Although I have no problem using SecureCRT (5.1.2 build 274) to work from Windows and connect to PC's running Linux, I have a problem when connecting to an embedded Asterisk appliance that provides"vi" through BusyBox 1.4.1 (2008-03-10). The issue I'm having, is that when I paste code into vi, the text appears jagged like this: <?php try { $dbh = new PDO("sqlite:./db.sqlite"); $dbh->exec("CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS customer (id INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT, name VARCHAR(255))"); Does someone what the problem is?
