• How do I revert back to windows 8 from 8.1?

  I hate the new windows 8.1 search. I mean a truly loathe it. It's easily the absolute worst thing Microsoft has ever made (including bing and IE). I asked how to get the old search back and the answer was that you can't. Honestly, I haven't noticed any changes from 8 - 8.1 besides a single tile has changed color (dunno why, the color doesn't even match the icon), and I really hate this new search thing. So how do I get 8 back?

• Installation of large programs in Mac OS X

  A few newbie Mac OS X questions: Despite the fact that most applications can be installed by dragging them to the Applications directory, some software still requires the creation of a separate program folder. Where should I put this folder? Does it matter? Is the Applications directory special somehow, or is it just a convenient folder with a custom icon? If I move one of these program folders later on, will the program still work? Will shortcuts to files in the folder break? Is there something similar to a registry in Mac OS X?

• ATI HDMI Audio disappears in Windows 7 when a TV is connected

  So far I have unsuccessfully googled for HOURS with no luck fixing this very annoying problem. The settings is the following: I have PC running Windows 7 RC (64-bit) Video card is a ATI Radeon 4850 series card (Sapphire HD 4850 512MB to be exact) The video card has HDMI out with built-in audio chip I have an HDMI cable connecting the PC to a TV (Sony Bravia series) The problem is that when I connect the HDMI cable to the TV, the ATI HDMI Sound output device disappears completely from the list of playback devices in Windows. As a workaround I can restore the audio by re-installing the HDMI audio driver. However, when I disconnect the TV the driver disappears again. So basically, every time I want to watch stuff on my TV, I have to reinstall audio driver, which of course is VERY annoying. EDIT: I have figured out that I do not need to re-istall the HDMI audio driver to restore sound; I only need to reboot my computer with the HDMI cable plugged in to restore the audio driver. This suggests that the problem has something to do with information passed from TV to computer, which makes my HDMI Audio driver disappear. Are there any other, more elegant workarounds for this problem? All help is much appreciated!

• Automatically connect to VPN when initiating RDP Remote Desktop connection and then disconnect VPN when done

  I know I can create a batch file to initiate a VPN connection followed by an RDP session, however I want to know if it's possible (in Windows 7 and ideally Windows XP as well) to have the VPN connection tied to the RDP session status. Scenario: user has to VPN first in order to be able to RDP. Ideally user would click one icon (batch file?) to initiate VPN connection and load RDP session. When they close the RDP session I want the VPN to then automatically disconnect so they don't accidentally route their subsequent non-RDP browsing + Internet activity through the VPN.

• Short USB cables not charging?

  I find this a strange problem but I can't find anything online about it. Recently I purchased a few short USB cables (20-30cm), to use in my car's USB connector to charge my phone. Strangely an older longer USB cable (1.2m), charges the phone fine (and the icon changes to show charging). With any of the short cables in the same USB slot no charging happens. Both the long and the short cables are USB2 compatible. I naturally assumed the short cables were faulty but connecting them to a PC or connecting to a high capacity external battery charging is successful using all the short cables and longer cables. Hopefully someone here is able to give me an explanation of the problem and how I can overcome this and use a short cable where it is most appropriate. Thanks

• Make windows vista file explorer act normally

  Is there some file I can remove or something I can do to globally ensure that windows visa/xp/etc doesn't do annoying things? Annoying things: 1) Hide the file extension 2) All these "meta" columns I could care less about in "details" view (rating, album, date taken, Assistant's name, Artist, 35mm focal length, City, Other City, etc...). All I want are Name, size, date created, date modified, and file extension. MAYBE file chmod settings. 3) That garbage in the left pane known as "favorite links." (Documents, desktop, photos, music, etc...) 4) Switching between detail view, large icon view, thumbnail view, list view, and tiles when I goto differnt folders, all I want is detail view, with the same columns every time. That's it. I shouldn't have to get third party software to make my file system browseable, but if I need to so be it... Why are all these settings buried away? It feels like I have to apply them onto each folder every time.

• Windows XP seemingly out of resources but plenty of free RAM and swap available

  This one has been bothering me for years and so far I couldn't find an adequate solution. The problem occurs on pretty much every XP install I've done. After opening a variety of programs or the system running existing programs for a while, Windows seemingly runs out of resources, without telling me. There's ALWAYS free RAM. For example, it just happened to me and I had over a gig of free RAM. There are no viruses, spyware, or other nonsense - it is a Windows resource problem, but the question is which resource is it running out of, how does one pinpoint it, and how does one prevent it? Sometimes, this happens after running specific programs - for example, today it happened when I started Photoshop CS4 and Flash CS4 at the same time. I also noticed that restarting The Bat (email client by Ritlabs) seems to get rid of this problem for a while but again, this happens on machines that don't even have The Bat installed. So what does exactly happen? The symptoms are: pressing alt-tab doesn't bring up the list anymore - it just jumps to the next window instantly, very similar to the way Alt-Esc works, however in this case, it's due to not having enough resources to bring up the alt-tab menu random programs would randomly crash, citing random errors, out of memory errors, system resources, inabilities to do system calls, etc. random programs would start missing random parts - for example, Firefox top menus might disappear, pull up partial selections, or not pull up anymore altogether. IE might lose a few of its toolbars. Some programs might fail to redraw or would just plain go gray where the UI used to be. Windows itself never complains about running out of RAM, virtual memory, or anything at all, yet it's running out of something. The only clue I was able to find and apply the fix today was this Desktop Heap Limitation. I haven't confirmed the fix working as not enough time passed. In the meantime, what are everyone's thoughts?

• Weird URL parse issue. (Android)

  I am attempting to parse in a URL to a KML file from maps.google.com. When I try and use this link: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=112748174025829638330.000483ad6315714cc941d&z=13&output=kml` I am unable to overlay this KML file on my MapView. If I were to take the KML file that I get from following this link and upload it to my Dropbox it will work just fine. I think there may be something about the URL from Google that it doesn't like? Link from dropbox: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1037184/Blue_original.kml Also it would be better if we could just save these KML files locally and pass them in the same way but I can't figure out a way to do this. • My google map android app keeps crashing

• How to clear the list of "Notification Area Icons" in Windows 7?

  I can't seem to find a way to clear the list of "Notification Area Icons" in Windows 7. Unfortunately I had installed a download manager (GetRight) which by default creates a tray icon for each download. I quickly disabled this but still have a ton of entries in that menu and it's annoying. I found an article that had me navigate to this key in the registry... HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify delete IconStreams and PastIconStreams, then restart, but it did not clear the list. Any ideas on this one?

• iPhone Cannot log into WiFi suddenly [closed]

  I suddenly get into this strange problem. My iPhone has been using the WiFi setup at my home for more than a year. Suddenly it cannot connect to the internet despite still having the full WiFi signal icon. Have an older iPhone 3 GS and it can still browse the net using the same WiFi. So the wireless router should be working. When I check the non-functioning iPhone, it has the "Router" and the "DNS" entries blank while the functioning iPhone has entries on both of the fields. Also the subnet Mask are different. Please help.

• Don't break header/footer when making page landscape format

  I have a document with a footer with page numbering and a header with some centered text. Long story short: I flipped one page to landscape format. Long story long: I made a forced page break to get a blank page. I then highlighted this page (that is, I highlighted the empty line on this page) and went to the page proporties menu window, clicked on the landscape format button, and chose to apply this setting for the highlighted text only. The result: All that is of course no big deal, and my page is flipped the 90 degrees as wished - but my header and footer break! They disappear from this page... and actually also from the next page (which is still upright portrait format), which is weird. And then the header and footer is back on the following pages again, though the page numbering restarts from 1. On this screenshot you can see that the previous and the following pages have headers and footers, but not the flipped one and not the page following the flipped one. What just happened here? How can I make the page numbering continue without restarting first of all, and then, how can I keep the header and footer on at least the upright page, that suddenly doesn't have them?

• Bluehost Emails Getting Blocked

  A site for my client has the run-of-the-mill "website with users" email pattern. Create an account, get an activation email. Get an email when a subscription is expiring, etc. The site is hosted on Bluehost and currently it uses php's mail() function. There isn't much configuration that is allowed (as far as I know). The trouble is, about a third of these emails disappear into the void. They aren't in spam or junk folders, there's no bounce message, they just cease to exist. I've read about Bluehost email troubles but I can't figure out what my options are for fixing it. These aren't marketing emails, ie they have user-specific information contained within them. I suppose if a solution offers a good templating system that would be fine. What are my options? • USB drive gets infected every time I plug it into my laptop

  Whenever I plug in my USB flash drive into my laptop running Windows XP, an AutoRun.inf file gets created inside it. Also a hidden folder called "Cache" which uses the Recycle bin icon gets created. AutoRUn.inf file cannot be opened in Windows. Both the Autorun.inf file and the "Cache" folder cannot be deleted. I opened the AutoRun.inf file using Ubuntu. I saw that it is trying to run a file Cache\TMP983.exe. I ran all anti-spywares, anti-malwares, anti-viruses, USB autorun eaters, but to no avail. How do I fix this?

• I can't connect to my network, except in safe mode

  My laptop cannot connect to my network all of a sudden except in safe mode. When it boots, it will show the networks available in the tray popup, but if I click connect on any, it says "Unable to connect" and the troubleshooter is useless. Shortly thereafter all the networks disappear. I have tried removing IPv6 support as I have seen that cause problems. No joy. I've also tried removing the wireless network adapter in Device Manager and reinstalling it, also no joy. I've also tried attaching a USB wireless adapter, and it has the same problem. If I boot in safe mode, then it has no problems at all. Three other devices in the house connect fine, so I am pretty sure it is nothing to do with the router. Any ideas what to check next? I am running Win7 Ultimate on a 2GHz Quadcore with 8GB RAM with a Broadcom 802.11n wireless card. EDIT: RE wired connections: What is very weird is that if i plug in a wired connection, then not only does it connect via the wired connection, but the wireLESS also starts working perfectly. And a soon as I unplug the wire, then the wireLESS stops working again! So it seems the wireless is right now working only in safe-mode, or when a wired connection is also plugged in.

  I have a Kingston flash drive which works fine in every computer that I insert it. But in my Windows 7 it doesn't mount anymore. Why this is happening ? • Had almost 300 GB worth of files with random names on my computer, and now they are gone. Any idea what they were and where they went?

  A couple of days ago I noticed I had a folder on my computer with more than 15 files in it. All the files were the exact same size (215 MB). They all had different names (just a bunch of random characters like Abe327(/-38s etc. I wasn't sure what they were so I decided to try to delete them. But then I noticed they disappeared from the D drive. Then the next day I noticed a new folder, with similar names and file sizes showed up on my C drive. The timestamps on the first set of files was almost all from a few months ago. Like the timestamps were saying 3:52 AM, 403 AM, etc. all from the same date. Then the set of files on the C drive that just appeared had yesterday's date on them. But similarly, all the files had timestamps within a 24 hour period. Like they had all just been created. Now this morning, all of those files are gone, and I didn't delete them. There are now no files like this in either drive. Any idea what these files were? Why were they so large, and why are they switching drives? Why did they disappear completely now, after the initial files were there for a few months.

• Mac claims to have connected to wireless network, but hasn't

  I am attempting to connect a new mac OSX 10.6.5 laptop to a wireless network (I am a windows expert but a mac novice). It used to connect without problem to the network when I had the security set to "64 bit wep". Now I have changed the security on my belkin router to "WPA-PSK (no server)". I have two PC's and an old mac connecting via the new security setting without problem. Now I have the problem that on the new mac, the wireless icon is indicating a good connection (5 dark bars). Also the network name has a tick next to it on the wireless drop down menu. But I can not view any websites. I can not even connect to the router by typing 192.168.2.1 into a browser address bar. Any ideas where I went wrong?

The problem is that I have to align the x coordinate manually, which is not a clean solution. The best way would it imho be to calculate the maximum x value of two nodes and use this, (as already suggested by Geoff) But it would already be very handy to be able to explicitly define the absolute xvalues of both nodes while keeping their current y values. This would avoid the fiddly procedure of adapting the third post decimal position to ensure that the brace looks vertical.

• 3 Servers, is this is a cluster?

  Hello, At the moment I have one Ubuntu server, 9.10, running with a simple Samba share, a mail server, DNS server and DHCP server. Mostly its just there for file sharing and email server. I also have 2 other servers that are exactly the same hardware and spec as the first, which have an rsync set up to retrieve the shared folders and backs them up. However, if the first server goes down, all of our shares disappear along with our mail and the system must be rebuilt. Also I tend to find if people are downloading a large amount from the file server, no-one can access there emails - especially in the morning when everyone is signing in at once. Would it be more beneficial for me to have all 3 servers, all running the same services, doing the same thing with some sort of cluster with load balancing? I'm not really sure where to begin looking, or how to go about such a setup where 3 servers are all identical, but perhaps one acts as the main load balancer?? If someone can point me in the right direction, or if this simply sounds like one of those Enterprise Cloud's that is now a default setup in Ubuntu Server 9.10+, then I'll go down that route. • Spots appear in a rectangle area on screen, ubuntu gnome 13.04, nvidia driver

  I am using Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 with nvidia-310 driver installed. My GPU is GeForce GTX650. Strange spots freqently appear on screen, with following traits: Spots are restricted in one or two rectangle areas at any instant. When typing, the pattern of spots change. Possibly increase, or all disappear when one key pressed. Mouse movement also influences. This problem last within one boot. The only way can I get rid of this problem is to reboot. It can be detected as soon as entering desktop if it appears. Simultaneously, the "power off" option is lost in the top-right menu of Gnome3. Never such problem when using windows 7 on the same computer, neither ubuntu with Nouveou driver. Seldomly, half of the screen become black. I googled a lot. Similar conditions are described, but no confirmed solution. Uninstall-r einstall strategy does not work. Any clue solving this will be appeciated.

• Autorotation and multiple view controllers

  I'm creating an iPad application which should only work in portrait and portait upsidedown modes. For performance reasons in my applicationDidFinishLaunching method I'm creating several viewControllers, and adding them to my main window as subviews. I then hide the ones I don't want to see straight away. There is no tab bar or navigation controller. My problem is that only the first viewController seems to be receiving the rotate calls. I have verified this by swapping around the order in which I add the subviews to the main window and NSLog's. Is there some way I can force all the controllers to receive the calls? Some of my views are designed to lay over the top of another view, but this behind view will not always be the same one - so it seems to make sense to have the overlay view in a separate view controller. Am I doing something fundamentally wrong, and that's why it's not behaving as I would expect? • How can I send an email from Mail.app to Outlook with an attachment that does not embed into the email body?

  I'm using Mail.app (on Mac OS X 10.6) and when I send an email to users on PC Outlook, with an attached image, they get the email as an image embedded into the body, not as an attachement. I even tried clicking "view as icon" before sending the attachment from Macmail, but that made no difference. I also tried this myself, sending from Mail.app over to my PC's Outlook, and I do get that same problem. In Outlook the image is not coming through as an attachment, but as an image embedded into the body of the email. The reason this is an issue primarily is because the user is then unable to click "save as" and has to actually copy and paste it into some other program, which means the file is converted from jpg or png to the bmp format. But beyond that, most of my recipients don't even know how to copy and paste it into another program to save it that way anyway. They need the "save attachment as" functionality.

• Apache returns the perl script source instead of execute the script when the request comes from chrome

  I've just finish to install awstats on my web server, and it runs fine using firefox. But when I try to open the awstats page with chrome, the perl source script is downloaded (instead of being executed). it seems the MIME requested by Chrome gave a different behavior compared to Chrome. Any idea ? • USB Audio device not selectable in settings after Camtasia Studio

  I tried to use Camtasia Studio 7 Recorder today, and when I selected the "Record Microphone and System audio" option, the recorder crashed, and then my sound settings icon disappeared. If I tried to open the Camtasia Recorder's Options or tried to select the option again, the program crashed. After holding the power button to force restart (so My settings wouldn't save, theoretically) the audio device was still not showing up in the sound settings, although it still is displayed under the "Hardware" tab, and is Functional. Or at least that's what windows thinks. I tried uninstalling Camtasia, and no sucess either. The USB audio device is labeled "C-Media USB Headphone Set". OS: Windows XP SP3 hu-HU Is there any way I could make it work again, like registry editing or something?
