• Application runs fine manually but fails as a scheduled task

  I wasn't sure if this should go here or on stackoverflow. I have an application that loads some files from a network share (the input folder), extracts certain data from them and saves new files (zips them with SharpZLib) on a different network share (output folder). This application runs fine when you open it directly, but when it is set to a scheduled task, it fails in numerous places. This application is scheduled on a Win 2003 server. Let me say right off the bat, the scheduled task is set to use the same login account that I am currently logged in with, so it's not because it's using the LocalSystem account. Something else is going on here. Originally, the application was assigning a drive letter to the input folder using WNetGetConnectionA(). I don't remember why this was done, someone else on our team did that and she's gone now. I think there was some issue with using the WinZip command line with a UNC path. I switched from the WinZip command line utility to using SharpZLib because there were other issues with using the WinZip command line. Anyway, the application failed when trying to assign a drive letter with the error "connection already established." That wasn't true and even after trying WNetCancelConnection(), it still didn't work. Then I decided to just map the drive manually on the server. Then when the app calls Directory.Exists(inputFolderPath) it returns false, even though it does exist. So, for whatever reason, I cannot read this directory from within the application. I can manually navigate to this folder in Windows Explorer and open files. The app log file shows that the user executing it on the schedule is the user I expect, not LocalSystem. Any ideas?

• Why does running "$ sudo chmod -R 664 . " cause me to get access denied on all affected directories?

  I have a project folder which has messy permissions on all files. I've had the bad tendency of setting everything to octal permissions 777 because it solved all non security related issues. Then FTP uploads, files created by text editors etc. has their own set of permissions making everything a mess. I've decided to take myself together and start using the permissions the way they were meant to be used. I figured 664 was a good default for all my files and folders, and I'd just remove permissions for others on private files, and add +x for executable files. The second I changed my project folder to 664 however: $ sudo chmod -R 664 . $ ls ls: cannot open directory .: Permission denied Which makes no sense to me. I have read/write permissions, and I'm the owner of the project folder. • How to avoid sshfs freezing?

  So the issue is this: I've installed sshfs on Ubuntu 12.04 and I'm trying to connect to a couple of remote servers. So initially the mount seams successful. Sometimes Gnome even picks it up and displays the "new device found" box at the bottom of the screen. but from here on there is not much that works. Or at least not any more. The first couple of times i connected it seamed to work fine, and I was able to transfer some files, then i disconnected using fusermount -u <folder> and after reconnecting a little later the trouble started. Now after executing sshfs -o ServerAliveInterval=15 -o reconnect -C -o workaround=all -o idmap=user root@<host>:/ <folder>, when I change directory into the mount-point, the shell just freezes. Strangely ls -al <folder> works when listing just the root of the remote system, but nothing more. Also every file-explorer I've tried freezes just like cd <folder>. To me it seamed like there was some kind of zombie thread or something hanging around my system, due to the fact that it did work the first time, so I have tried rebooting but no luck. sshfs -V gives this: SSHFS version 2.3 FUSE library version: 2.8.6 fusermount version: 2.8.6 using FUSE kernel interface version 7.12 So yea, any ideas?

• How do I fix error 1303 during TI Connect install?

  I recently purchased a TI-84 Plus graphing calculator, and I'm trying install the TI Connect software in order to connect the calculator to my computer via the USB cable. Unfortunately, I'm getting this error while trying to install the program: Error 1303. The installation has insufficient privileges to access this directory: E:\Data\Timothy\Documents\MyTIData. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator. However, my account is the only account on my PC, and it has administrative privileges. I've also tried running the installer with Run as Administrator, but with no luck. If I create the folder MyTIData manually, I receive this error: Error 1317. An error occurred while attempting to create the directory: E:\Data\Timothy\Documents\MyTIData I've reapplied the security settings to the E:\Data folder (and all its sub-directories) to Full for my account. I've also gone into Computer Management, and given SYSTEM full privileges for the entire disk. I've also logged out, logged back in, restarted, etc. but still, no luck. Now, I should mention that my Documents folder is not at the default location. I changed it due to my C: disk being a 90GB SSD, so I moved all my personal data onto the extra storage disk (which is ~1TB). I don't know if that is causing the issue, but it can't hurt throwing it out there. So why can't I install this program? Google'ing the problem brings up this error for various other installers (such as Visual Studio and Microsoft Office), but nothing for TI Connect. All the solutions are the same: Give the folder Full privileges...but I've already done this! I've also tried running the installer with and without the calculator plugged in, but it didn't change anything. In the prompt that contains the error, repeatedly clicking Retry or waiting a few moments before clicking Retry also produces no result.

• Shortcut to "printer and faxes" on another computer

  I have a print server running windows server 2008 that has about 50 printers on it. In windows XP, I was able to connect to the server using the UNC name and make a shortcut to the "printers and faxes" folder. (For the record, I know that it really isn't a folder, but that's outside the scope of this question.) I have recently switched to windows 7 and I find that the jump lists are really useful. One of the things I want to do is make it easy to connect to that server's "printers and faxes" folder. I would like to use something like a shortcut that I can open and go immediately to that location. The problem is that windows 7 doesn't have a way to create a shortcut like you could in WinXP. They have a button on the toolbar that says "view remote printers" which sends you to the correct folder. I'd like to avoid having to type out the server name. I also can't use the "view network" link in windows explorer. Our organization has over 6,000 machines and viewing the network lists all of them. This is all about saving time by using the minimum number of mouse clicks and key presses in normal operation. Does anyone have any suggestions?

• Good process/software for organizing photos past/present

  So I have tons of photos taken all the time. I have a lot from years past that I never went through (meaning deleting duplicates, etc). I've got a new pc with windows 7, and I'm wondering what a good process is to organize those photos. They're in folders that have really no meaning (it used to be people would put them in a folder wherever, even the desktop or somewhere else, not just the My Pictures folder). I'm going to keep all pictures in the "My Pictures" folder from now on. I've used Picasa from g=Google, and it works great. Is this the recommended free software for this? What process do I use to move the old pictures over in to new "organized" folders? Lately in Picasa when I import off my camera card, I would just select something that names the folder after the date it was taken. Is this advised? Just give me ideas on how to stay organized with photos. Should I tag them also? Should I rename the file names? Keep in mind I have over 16,000 photos I'll have to go through, so it can't be anything to thorough.

  In our company, we use personal folders with Outlook 2007 and make it the default method of downloading messages to keep our mailbox size on the server side small. Under calendar view, i see both calendars, my personal folder one and my server one. How can I remove from the list of calendars my server one since I do not use that one and it only creates confusion and problems such as adding entries onto that one instead of the other or disabling one and not getting alarms? I tried googling on it and read there is a utility to do that but couldn't find the name of it. Thanks in advance for your help.

• How can I move linked Word/Excel files without breaking the links under Windows 7?

  I currently operate under Windows XP and have multiple links between my Word and Excel files. I have to upgrade to Windows 7. When the .doc and .xls files are converted to .docm and .xlsm, respectively, the links no longer work. The Word document is still attempting to point back to the old .xls file rather than the new file. Also, creating new links between Word and Excel within Office 2010 doesn't seem to work. I create the new link, switch it from "Auto" to "Manual" and everything works fine. But when I copy the files to another folder, the Word document is still trying to link to the file in the previous folder rather than the new folder. This always worked in Windows XP. I've been using linked Word/Excel documents for 10+ years and have never really had a problem. I'm very careful to maintain Word and Excel filenames when moving the files to a new folder. The process has always been to 1.) move the files, 2.) update the links, 3.) rename the files, and 4.) update the links again. It's my understanding that under Windows XP, links between Word and Excel are relative. But under Windows 7 (and Office 2010?), those same links become fixed.

• Users are getting a temporary profile

  A bit about current setup: It is windows 2008 R2 AD servers (all of them are 2008R2) and couple locations which set as Sites. Each location has DFS on AD server. Roaming profiles are not used nor configured. Users have their home folder configured as mapped S: drive to DFS shared folder. For example: in profile tab user has: Home Folder - connect - S: to \\domain.com\dc\users\%username% We also have redirected Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders to \\domain.com\dc\users. Everything was fine. Suddenly (today), users in most locations lost their local profile (both XP and W7 desktops) and got temporary profiles. Also, it looks like local profile was created today (from folder properties). I checked events at couple machines and there is not errors related to profiles or logon process. I do not see issues in event logs at servers as well. Basically, I run out of ideas what is wrong and why machines lost their local profiles. PS: Laptop users do not have their folders redirected, but lost profiles as well.

• How can I create an appointment on a shared Outlook calendar

  This isn't as basic a question as it may seem. Hence all the descriptive text... I and my team use Outlook 2007. I have my own personal calendar and also I share a calendar with others in my team (which is mainly used to notify everyone of vacations etc.). The others in my team are NOT technical people. I would like to create a shortcut or template that any of us can use to create an appointment in the shared calendar. My initial though was to create a new appointment, but rather than actually put it in the calendar, I would save it as an Outlook Template (.oft) file. Once created, I would send this to my team and tell them to put it in their Templates file and put a shortcut on their desktop. Then, if they want to put a vacation in the shared calendar, they just double-click on the shortcut, change the dates etc. and then save & close it. However, when I do that, it doesn't save the fact that it's an appointment on the shared calendar - it just adds the appointment to the team member's personal calendar. There doesn't seem to be a way to specify a calendar in the template. I've also tried this by saving the template as a .ics or .vcs file, with no better luck. Additionally, if a team member adds an appointment to the shared calendar, other 'sharees' aren't notified, unless the appointment is actually created as a meeting and the other sharees are explicitly invited. I found this online (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook-help/keep-everyone-informed-about-time-away-from-the-office-HA010209819.aspx) which APPEARS to say that what I want to do isn't built in functionality (since it shows a bunch of steps to go through. I'd PREFER not to have to add this stuff to everyone else's personal calendar directly. So... Is this possible to do, natively (i.e. directly in Outlook)? Would a Sharepoint calendar make more sense and allow this functionality? Is there a way to do what I want which will allow the other team members to be notified? Like I said, I'm looking for as simple an interface as possible - these people aren't going to want to do much more than open something and change dates. Additionally, they're probably not going to have any fancy software on their PC's, although they will be up to date with Java and (maybe) .NET frameworks. Also, before anyone gets funny, yes, this has to work with Outlook 2007, as it's a corporate standard - we're not able to change that, even though e.g. Google Calendar would do this wonderfully. Obviously if this functionality is available in Outlook 2010, then fantastic - we might be able to upgrade. Thanks!

• Win7 'locking' process/files/folders?

  I've had a fair bit problems with sometimes files/folders/processes being 'locked' by Windows. The weird thing is, it's not like the traditional sense, I think, where tools like UnlockIT and wholockme would work. It seems that just giving it a little often helps - making me think it could either be the HDD, the memory, or something in Windows. A scenario: I go into a folder - don't open anything at all, go back up, cut or drag-move the folder to someplace else, it says "Action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program". Waiting sometimes 20 seconds sometimes a little longer, and I can move it. Another scenario is deleting a bunch of files in a folder, and it appears that everything is gone, but then suddenly after a few seconds an .exe file pops back up, and I can't delete it. Waiting a few minutes, then pressing refresh and it's gone. I have the strangest feeling that there's a problem with either HDD or memory. I already tried disabling Windows indexing service with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas? EDIT: I should say, that I have a very fast system, 16 GB DDR3 RAM, i7-2600k CPU, SSD main HDD, so I really should not be experiencing any sort of problems, where one might say that it's "reasonable" for the system not to respond right away. Edit2: And I updated SSD firmware a couple months ago, so it shouldn't be bad release FW either

• Lotus Notes 8.0.2 - how to stop all mail showing in customized view

  I am using Lotus Notes 8.0.2 at work and unfortunately the admin restricted changing default folders design. Only little changes are possible (e.g. change columns order) and even them are resetted each time I restart the client. I've created a new view with my desired column order, changed sorting etc. I have only one problem - even though I changed the "view" preference to show messages from the inbox folder only, I keep seeing all mail, regardless of the folder they are placed into. I'm not a Lotus expert and don't really know how to code. Yet, I am surprised as I see in a "simple view" this: uses '(ChangeMeetingType), ...' form AND In folder 'Inbox' And in Formula view only this: SELECT ((Form = "(ChangeMeetingType)") | (Form = "(Return Receipt)") | (Form = "Return Receipt") | (Form = "(ReturnNonReceipt)") | (Form = "ReturnNonReceipt") | (Form = "Memo") | (Form = "Memo") | (Form = "MemoEA") | (Form = "Reply") | (Form = "Reply") | (Form = "Reply With History") | (Form = "Reply With History") | (Form = "To Do") | (Form = "Task") | (Form = "_Document Memo") | (Form = "$DocMemo") | (Form = "Word. • Firefox url / link to a group of saved bookmarks?

  In Firefox you can easily save a group of tabs together. When (re-)accessing this group, the 'cascading' bookmark menu shows each individual bookmark (and under a line) it says "open all in tabs" I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu. Possible options: A) Record a simple macro w/ any number of "superuser" utilities* ('A' is not the preferred option, since many 'little-macros' are hard to keep track of) b) Use Autohotkey (similar to option 'A' and more flexible once you learn the basics) c) How does Firefox load all those tabs? The info must be stored somewhere (as a type of URL??) Quick Summary: The moment I click on "open all in tabs", I am clicking on something very similar to a hyper-link. How do I find the content (exact code) of that 'hyper-link', and / or "How do I easily launch the tabs?" .. . New EDIT #1: I'm looking for a way to launch those tabs without going up through the bookmark menu, or cluttering the bookmarks toolbar which I hide anyway :o) .. . New EDIT #2: I tried to keep the question simple and not mentioning Autohotkey programming. The objective is to launch all tabs using a button on an AHK gui. When grawity said, "It's just an ordinary folder containing ordinary bookmarks," he (she) reminds me I can easily find the folder / Now how to launch to urls inside that folder? .. • How would I change the DocumenRoot on the version of Apache that came pre-installed on my Mac OS X s

  OK, so I want to take advantage of the Apache server that comes installed on my Mac OS X system (which means, I would like not to have to install my own version of Apache since I might as well tryto use what comes bundled), and as such, I went to change some settings in the configuration file: /etc/apache2/httpd.conf Namely, I changed the these two lines: DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/Sites" <Directory "/Users/myusername/Sites"> So that they initially pointed to a folder in my Dropbox folder (so I could have my docs sync to my Dropbox): DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/Dropbox/public_html" <Directory "/Users/myusername/Dropbox/public_html"> That didn't work. So then I figured, ok maybe it was too much to ask to make folder in my Dropbox be my document root. So then I thought, what if I make the Document root another folder of my choosing like so: DocumentRoot "/Users/myusername/dev-sites/public_html" <Directory "/Users/myusername/dev-sites/public_html"> and that didn't work either. After looking within the httpd.conf file for clues it seems that only two directories appear to work as Document root paths for the Apache that comes bundled with Mac OS X: /Users/myusername/Sites (or ~/Sites) and /Library/WebServer/Documents/ But trying to use any other directories didn't seem to work. I would get 403 errors on my browser. I was wondering if there was some other settings to change on the httpd.conf file or any permissions to set to make this work. • Windows 7 - ignore security when reading external drive

  hi, My system hard drive on an XP computer kind of failed (random corrupt sectors). So i got a new harddrive and am trying to recover the files. The filesystem is NTFS. The system i'm trying to use when recovering the files is Windows 7. I'm obviously an admin on this box. The last data i'm trying to recover is stuff in the Documents and Settings folder. I'm using a SATA to a USB cable thingy so that I just plug it in as an External Hard Drive. The problem: In Windows Explorer when i try to copy the data, I keep getting prompted with Security warnings and error messages. It keeps telling me i have to change the owner permissions of the folder and all it's contents. If i tell it to change all the files and folder permissions it takes a really long time because it has to recurse through all the folder contents to change the permissions. Is there a way for me to ignore the file permissions when doing this? thanks

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. • Microsoft Server 2003 Explorer shows duplicate local shares

  Hi folks, I am new here and I could really use some advice please. I am having a problem with our file server. When I try to browse the shared folders using explorer, several of the shared folders all appear to have the same name. Whenever I attempt to rename one of the affected folders, all the affected folders name also change. Our File Server is Windows Server 2003 R2. I am logged on directly to the server using remote desktop. When I open the folder all is as it should be, the proper content is there and the address bar displays the correct folder name and path. The share names are correct, so everything that needs to access the shared folder/files can do so. Also when I browse to the folder using the command-line all it as it should be there too. The only issue seems to be the incorrect display name when browsing using explorer. Can anyone offer any advice or help as to how to resolve this issue please? It would be most appreciated. Thanks

• Map path server with workgroup to other server with domain

  I have the following situation, and I need some help to setup properly I have two VPS (hosted with the same provider, maximumasp). Server A is 2008R2, set with WORKGROUP, and server B is 2012, set with domain, maximumasp.local. On server A I have an old web app, which uses a special folder, c:\MyUploads, to store uploaded files. App is using this using an appSetting. It will be kept running for a while for safety / compatibility reasons. I installed a new version of the application on server B, running under AppPoolIdentity. Both instances of the app (A and B) will connect to the same database, so I need them to share also the access to upload folder c:\MyUploads. How should I setup the app on machine B to access the folder c:\MyUploads ? My idea is to share the folder as \A\MyUploads, and then map it to server B. But the problem is, I don't know to give Read/write to c:\MyUploads on machine A to IIS AppPools\ on machine B I was trying a test, and shared the c:\MyUploads to Everyone, ReadWrite. I was able to access it from machine B using \\MyUploads But when app from machine B tried to access a file, it gave error. Any idea how can I accomplish this? • Is it possible to view Facebook news feeds page by page rather than loading it all as I scroll?

  If you want to scroll through your Facebook news feed (be it on the main feed, your personal feed, or in groups) to older parts, you have to scroll to the bottom, wait for the ajax load of the next part of the feed, and repeat. The problem with this is that, if you're scrolling down very far, the HTML document just gets bigger and bigger until your browser starts to die due to the overload of resources brought on by added HTML, text, and even images. This pretty much sets a limit to how far back you can scroll. Clicking on months and years on your personal feed has the same effect of cumulatively adding feed segments to the HTML document. I notice that this month/year feature is not available on the main feed and for groups. If there were a way to literally page through the feed so that only a single page's worth of feed data is loaded at a time, that would make scrolling through it much more doable.

  I am trying to use SQL Server Management Studio 2008's Activity Monitor with an SQL Server 2000 instance to diagnose some query performance issues. I can connect SMSS 2008 to the db fine, and use it to browse objects and run queries. But when I press the Activity Monitor button, it pops up an error message saying: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio This operation does not support connections to Microsoft SQL Server Personal Edition version 8.00.818. This MSDN article implies that Activity Monitor works with SQL Server 2000. Is it the fact that it's Personal Edition that's preventing it from working? The error message isn't clear whether it's the edition or version that's the problem.

I am connected to my workplace through VPN. i can map the drive when I use the administrator account on the server. But the log on is unsuccessful if I use my personal account on the server to map the drive. My personal account on the server is part of Administrators group. Can any one help me with this?
