• How do I objectively measure an application's load on a server

  All, I'm not even sure where to begin looking for resources to answer my question, and I realize that speculation about this kind of thing is highly subjective. I need help determining what class of server I should purchase to host a MS Silverlight application with a MSSQL server back-end on a Windows Server 2008 platform. It's an interactive program, so I can't simply generate a list of URLs to test against, and run it with 1000 simultaneous users. What tools are out there to help me determine what kind of load the application will put on a server at varying levels of concurrent users? Would you all suggest separating the SQL server form the web server, to better differentiate the generated load on the different parts of the stack?

• Windows Server 2003- RDP functionality after removing Terminal Server temporary CALs

  I recently configured Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services for a client. The 90 day trial CAL period is about to expire, and my client has decided that he's too cheap to purchase CALs. He wants to use the 2 administrative RDP logons for remote access. Can I just uninstall Terminal Server to revert the RDP functionality back to that of the 2 administrative RDP logons, or is there something else that needs to be done? What's the best way to uninstall Terminal Services? Through Add/Remove Programs - Windows Components - uncheck Terminal Server or through the "Configure Your Server Wizard" by removing the Terminal Server role?

  In my httpd.conf: If I have my virtual host configured as: NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80 ServerName foo.com ServerAlias www.foo.com Include conf.d/foo.conf </VirtualHost <VirtualHost *:80 ServerName bar.com ServerAlias www.bar.com Include conf.d/bar.conf </VirtualHost Can I get by with a single domain SSL certificate or must I purchase a wildcard SSL certificate to handle the www subdomain? I am now trying to configure the ssl.conf file, can I use name-based vhosts in my ssl.conf file like this: NameVirtualHost *:443 <VirtualHost *:443 ServerName foo.com ServerAlias www.foo.com ... Include conf.d/foo.conf </VirtualHost <VirtualHost *:443 ServerName bar.com ServerAlias www.bar.com ... Include conf.d/bar.conf </VirtualHost or do I need IP based vhosts? If this is possible, what kind of cert would I need in order to do this?

• Virtual Machines: What components should I upgrade to improve running virtual machines?

  at work I need to have one or sometimes two instances of a vmware virtual Windows 7 machine running on my real Windows 7 machine. The computer I'm using is Dell Precision 490 from 2009 I believe, possibly earlier. Running Windows 7 ultimate. Problems while running VM's: The entire computer slows down when a vmware instance is running. Pages take a while to react to a scroll, applications take forever to launch, and programs hang both in the virtual machines and on the real one. So, what components should I upgrade to improve this? I guess a more pointed question would be, which components will help the most? Possible options: Getting 8gb of RAM instead of 4gb new graphics card new processors? (Is that really an option?) My intuition tells me it will be a combination of the RAM and graphics card. There is also the possibility that an '09 tower just isn't cut out for vm's and our business should purchase a new tower.

  I am looking to retire my HTPC. So much of what we do with it can be done with one of our video game consoles or an AppleTV that is seems like a waste of space, power and time to maintain. The trouble is that my wife does streaming yoga classes served up via specific websites. I am assuming they are Flash based and so far I have been unable to find Apps for these content providers. My question is, is there a GOOD way to handle flash-based or even HTML5/h.264 web content with one of the other Internet enabled devices in our stack? So far we have: Nintendo Wii Playstation 3 XBox 360 And we're looking to purchase a current generation AppleTV. update The sites are YogisAnonymmous.com and YogaJournal.com, both are confirmed as Flash.

• Dual Screens with Widescreen monitors?

  I want to build a new computer and purchase new monitor(s). At my old job I had two 20" 4:3 and I absolutely loved this setup. However, the stores in my country only seem to have widescreen monitors nowadays, and the only 4:3 LCDs i have been able to find are 17". My question is: Do widescreens suck for using them as dual monitors? Can anyone with this setup comment on their experience with having multiple widescreen monitors? Would it be better to get three 17" 4:3 LCDs instead of two widescreens? If i go with widescreens, should i go with the smallest ones i can find? Purchasing a single big widescreen monitor is not an option for me, since being able to maximize an app on a specific area of the screen is a must have for me and im not willing to use "hacky" apps for this purpose that do a crappy job. • OSX Keyboard Shortcuts in Dialogs?

  On Windows, every dialog box includes underlined letters that you can activate using the Alt key. I use these "Alt" keyboard shortcuts all the time; I'm missing them as I'm trying to switch to OSX. On OSX, all I can find is Tab navigation, which requires you to press Tab seven or eight times to get anywhere in most dialog boxes. (And even that is hidden by default: you have to enable "Full keyboard access" in the "Keyboard & Mouse" control panel to be able to Tab between buttons.) Is there some way I can get something like the Windows Alt accelerators for OSX dialogs? I'm willing to write Automator code, download/purchase software, etc. Specifically, I'm imagining maybe something where you do some shortcut command and then start typing the name of the button, and hit Enter to push the button...?

• ISP Load Balancing with ISA 2006

  I understand that ISA 2006 has an integrated Network Load Balancing feature. We also recently acquired a second internet line through a second service provider. I know it is possible to purchase a NLB router for using both incoming lines but this is not the route we would like to take if at all possible. Thus, is it possible to have two ISA 2006 servers each with there own external connection, Load balanced to be viewed as one gateway? My thought was to have two ISA servers each with three NICs, one external, one internal and one for cross communication. I am under the impression that this should work but was hoping someone else has had experience with it.

• Can i upgrade Photoshop CS6 to Adobe Creative Suite 6 at a discounted price?

  I've had a look around on the official Adobe Shop website, but I couldn't find a clear answer for this.. I am a freelance developer and I have recently purchased Adobe Photoshop CS6 through the Adobe.com (small/medium business site, volume licensing). However, after downloading and installing it a couple of days ago, I realised that I may require the complete 'Adobe Creative Suite 6' instead. Does anyone out there know if this it is possible to upgrade your purchase, and not just the specific product you've bought previously? I guess I'm looking for something along the lines of 'Complete My Album', but for Adobe software, so that I don't end up with two copies of Photoshop. Thanks :)

• Allow image upload - most efficient way?

  Hey everyone, In my site, I currently only allow users to import images from other sites rather than uploading it themselves. The main reason for this is because I don't have much storage space on my host (relatively speaking). The host charges quite a bit for additional space. What are the alternatives to hosting images users upload (max 1mb size). Would it be a good idea to purchase separate cheap hosting with "unlimited space" (I know that's not true, but I'm guessing it's more than 1gb)? Or are there some caveats with this approach (e.g. security since the site should not be browsable, but accessed via another server)? Are there alternative ideas that I could employ? I have a spare computer which can act as a server if necessary, but its an ancient Dell machine (Pentium-III).   Hi, I have a Dell Dimension 3100 Desktop with a 128MB Graphics Card Integrated into the Mother Board. I need to upgrade this 128MB to at least 256MB or 512MB if the system will support same. I am told by Dell that all I have is a PCIx1 slot and that they do not stock a Graphics Card for this. I was told to shop around at Amazon and ebay etc and I would find one there. I have shopped around for some time now and do not know exactly what I am looking for. There are several PCI Graphics Card out there but which one would be the correct one for a Dell Dimension 3100. • How to set up an SSL Cert with Subject Alternative Name

  To test a specific embedded client, I need to set up a web server serving a couple of SSL (HTTPS) sites, say "main.mysite.com" and "alternate.mysite.com". These should be handled by the same certificate, with a Subject Name of "main.mysite.com" and a Subject Alternative Name of "alternate.mysite.com". This certificate needs to be in an authority chain back to a 'proper' CA (such as GoDaddy, to keep the cost down). My question is, are there any good tutorials on how to do this, or can someone explain the process? What sort of parent certificate do I need to purchase from the CA provider? My understanding of SSL certificates is limited, but as Manuel said in Fawlty Towers, "I learn...". I'm happy to work in Windows (IIS) or Linux (Apache) (or even OSX, for that matter). • Server Fax Farm - Need suggestions, or advice

  We're Looking at creating a large fax farm via T.38 (Fax over Voip - hundreds of incoming and outgoing faxes) on linux servers, anyone have any suggestions on what is available? All my searches return using Asterisk 1.6.x with a commercial product from Digium called "Fax for Asterisk" (with required purchase of "channels" at $38.00 per channel). There must be an open source project out there I can't seem to find. Suggestions welcome! We're wondering if providing a music streaming server internally would help on bandwidth. How legal is that? • Windows 8.1 won't accept my Media Center Pack Product Key

  I just installed Windows 8.1 Pro as an upgrade from an ISO torrent. I was able to activate my original Windows 8 key successfully. However, I tried to activate my Media Center Pack key that I purchased for Windows 8 and it errors out the first try. When I try to activate it again, it then says "This key won't work. Check it and try again, or try a different key.". Do I have to purchase the key again? Thanks

  I need a recovery software that has the features of reclaime file recovery. Those are, to be able to read image files, to keep folder structure, to be as efficient but to be free. I can't afford reclaime and all free software that i know out there either support folder structure but cannot read an image of the array created or the opposite. Can somebody suggest some software? PS: I used reclaime to create an image of my RAID0 broken array and with reclaime file recovery i can see all my files intact but i cannot recover without purchase.

  Hi All, We're looking to purchase some SSL certificates to secure the login pages of ecommerce sites. It is not required to secure the actual payment process as this is protected by a third party with its own verisign certificate. rapidSSL looks like a good (and cheap) option but a salesperson has told me that they are only suitable for "test sites" and recommended that we use one that is 4 times the cost. • Oracle RAC interconnect in a Dell M1000e Blade Enclosure

  We are looking at a Dell M1000e enclosure and appropriate Blades with 4 NICs each. We are planning on running Linux/Oracle 11g RAC on two blades, storage will be handled on an iSCSI SAN for which two NICs (via passthrough) will be connected leaving us with two NICs (via blade centre switches). We would like to have an interconnect (obviously) , an external IP and an internal IP. Would best practice be to: bond the remaining two interfaces and VLAN as appropriate to provide three virtual interfaces? run the interconnect on one interface and VLAN the external/internal interfaces? purchase a blade with more NICs as the above is a terrible idea? Another option? Please feel free to point out the blindingly obvious or to relevant documentation on support.oracle. I am specifically interested in supported configurations and best practices. • OEM to Virtual Machine for Diaster Recovery / Business Continuity.

  Hello, We are trying to deploy a Business Continuity Appliance (Zenith BDR) for a customer and one of the features is the ability to bring up the failed server in a virtual machine on the appliance. Great feature. However, the customer has OEM version of Server 2003 on that server and it comes up requiring immediate re-activation since it is now on different hardware. We would be happy with a 2-3 day grace period which is what we expected, but this isn't happening. What are the solutions without having to purchase another VLK copy of Server 2008 and re-installing the server with that license just so we can set this thing up.

• Laptop burned after heavy OpenGL usage. Is there hope?

  After programming for OpenGL and a 'slow OS' case for a couple of minutes the screen went blank. I shut it down with forcing it with the shutdown key and now there's no led at all with battery or AC, it doesn't start at all, it's totally dead. It's most certainly not the AC adapter since that didn't show at first, it doesn't start a led at all and if the AC is connected it does a very slight and faint clicking noise (one has to have his ear next to it to hear it, near the AC connector). Is there any hope? I suppose it's a burned motherboard. I suspected a burned GPU but that would still leave the leds at least lid or at least attempting to start up. Now it's totally dead. It's a TOSHIBA satellite x200-219. It has no warranty, as it's more than 2 years since purchase.

• 'Game Show' presentation

  I work at a state university, and every day of summer orientation we have a little jeopardy-like game that new students' parents play. We run it in an auditorium. Right now the game is a powerpoint presentation (set up similar to jeopardy) off an old laptop running Powerpoint 2003. What I want to do is to purchase & use a smaller tablet/mini-book with a touchscreen. The touchscreen would be much more professional than dragging a mouse around the screen to select category questions. I also want to use hot keys during the presentation for sound effects (for correct + incorrect answers), and I want to play music and show an automated slideshow (photos from the day). This device would need vga or hdmi and audio out. I've been looking at iPads and iPad alternatives, but figured someone out there might have a better idea or done this before.
