• Tape vs SSDs backups regarding long-term storage reliability

  My question is very specifically about solid state drives, not regular hard drives. I would like to put in place a grandfather-father-son backup scheme, with the SSDs being used for the grandfather and father portions, and the yearly grandfather would be locked in a safe offsite for maybe 5-10 years. Can I expect that after this period of time the data would be preserved as well as it would be on a tape?

• Removable Disk Drives Not Appearing

  OS: Vista, SP1 My SD/MMC drive does not appear anywhere (MyComputer, Disk Manager). In My Computer the only available drives ar C:\, D:\ and J:. I can no longer view any removable disk drives. When I put my SD card into its slot, it doesn't get read at all. I can't load pictures from my card to my PC. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

• Ubuntu 10.04 live cd keyboard problem.

  Today I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.04 x64 .iso but when trying it out in live cd the keyboard of both my laptop and a microsoft branded one didn't work. I was planning into installing Ubuntu in a partition but I couldn't even put my info in the installation process to do it. Is this a problem with the .iso or the driver? because I'm afraid that if I can actually go ahead with the installation then the keyboard won't work after that too.

  On Windows Server 2008 R2, my IT administrator has installed a certificate using the windows certificate management tool. The certificate is for *.thedomain.com. He set it up as not exportable for security reasons: I'm not suposed to be able to put my hands on the certificate. This configuration would allow me to use the certificate with microsoft products, but not to go away with the certificate. Q: It there a way to configure Apache 2 to use this certificate "the windows way"?

  I find myself constantly typing (using tab, of course) absurd paths like cd path/to/the/thing\ that\ I\ need/python/proj/eraseme Aside from doing an ln -s (or some other type of ln?), is there any other way to get around faster? Also, if the solution is to use ln, is there some standard way/place to put the links so a not to clutter my ~ directory? I'm not asking for shortcuts only: any solution that helps with the problem of "how to get around" would help.

  I hear that Windows 8 Pro can use full disk encryption. I also understand that Win8 is targeting the "slate" / "tablet" form factor specifically. But all my previous experience with BitLocker requires you to put in some kind of PIN or password at boot time -- how can I do this without a (hardware) keyboard? This preview of an upcoming Win8 tablet mentions BitLocker but doesn't address the PIN issue. Am I missing something?

  I wonder if there is an option (inside of Evernote or outside of it, manually with the help of 3rd party tools) to locate the biggest notes inside of Evernote? I want to remove those or put them into another system. Basically a "order after note(file) size" option is what I need.   I need a cheap netbook for "router" functions. [OpenBSD/Scientific Linux/whatever will be on it on OS level]. So once I configure it I will put it somewhere down for YEARS. The Question is: What is the lifespan difference of the netbook if it will be [for years]: with opened lid with closed lid I don't think there will be heat problems, because netbooks doesn't produce too much heat. But will ex.: a closed lid [for years] decrease the lifespan of a netbook?

He'd really like to be able to repartition his harddrive without formatting it. In the past Partition Magic would have leapt to mind, but apparently Symantec bought that in 2003 and never updated it (and then officially discontinued it).   My ISP's DHCP server specifies 3 DNS servers that provide ads on mistyped domain names. I'm using a third party DNS provider that only has 2 DNS servers, but unless I put something in the third box dd-wrt fills it with the ISP's 3rd crappy DNS server and mistyped domain names go to their ad page. I've used an unused IP address on the LAN. Is this the best solution?

• cpu fan keeps getting faster after removing battery

  Hi all, I have recently pulled the battery out of the motherboard on an old Acer desktop to reset the bios, but when I put the battery back in after about 3-4 hours, and start it up, the cpu fan just keeps getting faster and faster, like it won't stop at all.   Currently have the one server doing MSSQL/IIS. Can use NLB with two servers running IIS for HA and can use database mirroring and put the failover partner in the connection string for HA. Can we use NLB + Mirroring together? So if one of the servers died (ie power plug removed), everything will continue to work (after the timeout for the mirror to become the principal)?

If a HD has a damaged PCB board, but the actual disc inside the drive where all the information is stored is not damaged, is it possible to take that disc and put it in another hard drive whose PCB board is not damaged?   Oracle is marketing Exadata to our company, and they're focusing on Smartscan, which is, advertised 10x more effective than traditional solution. I don't really understand (and somewhat don't really believe) this solution, because they assume that data is put on separated storage, and no indexes are used, so "1TB data was scanned and only 2MB is returned".
