• How to display my server's current response time to an average user

  Sorry, I'm not really sure of the right way to ask this one so bear with me... We have a web application that runs on a set of servers at a data center (not in our offices) We want to be able to somehow 'advertise' to our clients/users that the availability or response time of our servers has met a standard throughout the day. I am being asked to come up with a standard metric that we can easily advertise on our login screen that shows current "standard response time" checked every x minutes. My thinking is that I need to capture something like the results of a traceroute from a server (either in our office, amazon, etc..) to one of the data center servers and come up with a Red/Yellow/Green type of a notifier for the login screen to let the user know that our tests are responding normally and if they are having delay issues it could be their network or connection to the internet. We have lots of clients in rural areas that have poor connectivity and we are trying to let them know any slowness might be on their end, not ours. I've got the LAMP stack to work with, but this could also be some other system all together as long as it can update the main server with the results. I already have pingdom reports that are available, but that's a bit more than people want to read sometimes. Any ideas on what I can do?

• CSS ] how to automatically resize the wrapper div.

  Hi, I've been struggling with this problem.. There is a wrapper div and it contains 3 vertical column divs with full of texts, and this wrapper div has red background color so that it can be a background of the entire texts. <div id="content_wrapper"> <div id="cside_a"> // massive texts goes here </div> ... // two more columns go here. </div> And here is the CSS code for them. #content_wrapper { background-color:#DB0A00; background-repeat:no-repeat; min-height:400px; } #cside_a, #cside_b, #cside_c { float: left; width: 33%; } And this code gives me a background that covers only 400px height box.. My expectation was the wrapper div automatically resizes depending on the size of the divs in it. Somehow putting "overflow:hidden" with wrapper CSS code makes everything work fine. I have no idea why "overflow:hidden" works.. shouldn't this hide all the overflowed texts..? Could anyone explain me why? Is is the correct way to do it anyway?

• Strategy for animating a lot of "LED's" - thread?, UIView animations? NSOperation? (iPhone)

  Hi I have to do some different views containing 72 LED lights. I built an LED Class so I can loop through the LED's and set them to different colors (Green, Red, Orange, Blue None etc.). The LED then loads the appropriate .png. This works fine, I loop over the LED's and set them. Now I know that at some time they will need to not just turn on/off change color, but will have to turn on with a small delay. Like an equalizer. I have a 5-10 views containing the 72 LED's and I would like to achieve the above with the minimum amount of memory/CPU strain. for(LED *l in self.ledArray) { [l display:Green]; } I simply loop as shown above and inside the LED is a switch case that does the correct logic. If this were actual LED's and a microController I would use sleep(100) or similar in the loop, but I would really like to avoid stuff like that for obvious reasons. I was thinking that doing a performOnThread withDelay would really be consuming, so would UIView animation changing the alpha and NSOperation would also be a lot of lifting for a small feature. Is there a both efficient and clever way to go around this? Thanks for any inspiration given:)

• emacs: Inferior-mode python-shell appears "lagged"

  Hi all - I'm a Python(3.1.2)/emacs(23.2) newbie teaching myself tkinter using the pythonware tutorial found here. Relevant code is pasted below the question. Question: when I click the Hello button (which should call the say_hi function) why does the inferior python shell (i.e. the one I kicked off with C-c C-c) wait to execute the say_hi print function until I either a) click the Quit button or b) close the root widget down? When I try the same in IDLE, each click of the Hello button produces an immediate print in the IDLE python shell, even before I click Quit or close the root widget. Is there some quirk in the way emacs runs the Python shell (vs. IDLE) that causes this "lagged" behavior? I've noticed similar emacs lags vs. IDLE as I've worked through Project Euler problems, but this is the clearest example I've seen yet. FYI: I use python.el and have a relatively clean init.el... (setq python-python-command "d:/bin/python31/python") is the only line in my init.el. • Images in Applet not showing in web page

  I am trying to display a JPEG image and a moving dot on a Java applet which I am using on a web based application. However, when I run the applet it works fine, but when I display the applet from the JSP page, I get the moving dot but not the JPEG image. Is there a specific folder where the JPEG needs to be? The applet loads fine however the picture doesn't display. I think it's not the code but the location of the picture that is causing a problem. Thanks

  I encountered a strange performance in my current project, which is about session. The strange part is it was normal in Safari but failed in other browsers (includes chrome, firefox and opera). • (Not So) Silly Objective-C inheritance problem when using property - GCC Bug?

  Update 2 - Many people are insisting I need to declare an iVar for the property. Some are saying not so, as I am using Modern Runtime (64 bit). I can confirm that I have been successfully using @property without iVars for months now. Therefore, I think the 'correct' answer is an explanation as to why on 64bit I suddenly have to explicitly declare the iVar when (and only when) i'm going to access it from a child class. The only one I've seen so far is a possible GCC bug (thanks Yuji). Not so simple after all... Update - I messed up one line of the original copy and paste - corrected. The @property call was missing (nonatomic, retain) but is a red herring - STILL NEED AN ANSWER! Thanks. I've been scratching my head with this for a couple of hours - I haven't used inheritance much. Here I have set up a simple Test B class that inherits from Test A, where an ivar is declared. But I get the compilation error that the variable is undeclared. This only happens when I add the property and synthesize declarations - works fine without them. • How does asp.net MVC remember my incorrect values on postback?

  This is working, but how??? I have a controller action for a post: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post )] public ActionResult Edit(Person person) { bool isvalid = ModelState.IsValid; etc. The Person object has a property BirthDate, type DateTime. When i enter some invalid data in the form, say 'blabla' which is obvious not a valid Datetime, it fills all the (other) Person properties with the correct data and the BirthDate property with a new blank DateTime. The bool isvalid has the value 'false'. So far so good. Then i do this: return View(p); and in the view i have this: <%= Html.TextBox("BirthDate", String.Format("{0:g}", Model.BirthDate)) %> <%= Html.ValidationMessage("BirthDate", "*") %> Ant there it comes: i EXPECTED the model to contain the new, blank DateTime because i didn't put any new data in. Second, when the View displays something, it must be a DateTime, because Model.BirthDate can't hold anything but a DateTime. But to my surprise, it shows a textbox with the 'blabla' value! (and the red * behind it) Which ofcourse is nice because the user can seee what he typed wrong, but how can that (blabla)string be transferred to the View in a DateTime field?

• Why is the label not changing color using RegisterClientScriptBlock?

• Browser relative positioning with jQuery and CutyCapt

  I've been using CutyCapt to take screen shots of several web pages with great success. My challenge now is to paint a few dots on those screen shots that represent where a user clicked. CutyCapt goes through a process of resizing the web page to the scroll width before taking a screen shot. That's extremely useful because you only get content and not much (if any) of the page's background. My challenge is trying to map a user's mouse X coordinates to the screen shot. Obviously users have different screen resolutions and have their browser window open to different sizes. The image below shows 3 examples with the same logo. Assume, for example, that the logo is 10 pixels to the left edge of the content area (in red). In each of these cases, and for any resolution, I need a JavaScript routine that will calculate that the logo's X coordinate is 10. Again, the challenge (I think) is differing resolutions. In the center-aligned examples, the logo's position, as measured from the left edge of the browser (in black), differs with changing browser size. The left-aligned example should be simple as the logo never moves as the screen resizes. Can anyone think of a way to calculate the scrollable width of a page? In other words, I'm looking for a JavaScript solution to calculate the minimum width of the browser window before a horizontal scroll bar shows up. Thanks for your help!

• Threading is slow and unpredictable?

  I've created the basis of a ray tracer, here's my testing function for drawing the scene: public void Trace(int start, int jump, Sphere testSphere) { for (int x = start; x < scene.SceneWidth; x += jump) { for (int y = 0; y < scene.SceneHeight; y++) { Ray fired = Ray.FireThroughPixel(scene, x, y); if (testSphere.Intersects(fired)) sceneRenderer.SetPixel(x, y, Color.Red); else sceneRenderer.SetPixel(x, y, Color.Black); } } } SetPixel simply sets a value in a single dimensional array of colours. If I call the function normally by just directly calling it it runs at a constant 55fps. If I do: Thread t1 = new Thread(() => Trace(0, 1, testSphere)); t1.Start(); t1.Join(); It runs at a constant 50fps which is fine and understandable, but when I do: Thread t1 = new Thread(() => Trace(0, 2, testSphere)); Thread t2 = new Thread(() => Trace(1, 2, testSphere)); t1.Start(); t2.Start(); t1.Join(); t2.Join(); It runs all over the place, rapidly moving between 30-40 fps and sometimes going out of that range up to 50 or down to 20, it's not constant at all. Why is it running slower than it would if I ran the whole thing on a single thread? I'm running on a quad core i5 2500k.

• Internet Explorer table 1 pixel spacing problem

  I've found a strange problem with Internet Explorer related to table spacing and cannot find a way to work around it. An empty table results in a single pixel white space with Internet Explorer (6 and 7, 8 not yet tested), while all other browsers ignore the empty table. • Trying to draw a dynamic rectangle in SVG

  To be more specific, here are the steps I need: onmousedown - set x and y of rect as mouse coordinates onmousemove - using the current x and y mouse coordinates calculate height and width of the rect, set these and append onmouseup - remove the rectangle, and call a function based off some calculations from the rect.
