• DRS: Unknown JNLP Location

  We are using Deployment Rule Sets to limit access to the older JRE to well-known applications like - but are running into a problem. One business critical applications has the following properties (*s to protect info): title: Enterprise Services Repository location: null jar location: http://app.*.com:52400/rep/repository/*.jar jar version: null isArtifact: true The application downloads a .jnlp file, and uses java web start to execute. Since the location is null, this application cannot be targeted by a location rule. And the certificate hash method only works when the application is cached (being ran more than once). If cache storing is off, which is the case in some situations, how can this application be targeted? Or at least told to run with an older JRE on start? This problem is specifically noted in this bug Thanks!

  I just ordered the Dell Studio XPS 16 with i7 and 16" RGBLED screen. This upgrade from WLED LCD to RGBLED LCD charged me more $$. But now when I view the order online, it lists this part as "320-8335 Premium FHD WLED Display, Obsidian Black, 2.0 MP Webcam". When called Dell, the rep says this part is RGBLED screen and the "premium" is for RGBLED. I want to make sure they are shipping me the RGBLED screen and not the WLED. Is there any way to verify this after I receive (either from Device Manager or BIOS or somewhere in system settings)? Also, is there any published specifications / criteria that we can run (some third party software) on this monitor which can tell if this is WLED or RGBLED?

  Of course this sounds like a joke question, but it's meant seriously. I remember being told by an old system administrator back in the early nineties about people asking about good FTPs for porn, and that they would as a joke always tell them to connect to 127.0.0.1. They would come back saying that there was a lot of porn at that address, but that oddly enough it seemed like they already had it all. Point being, it seems like it's been around for quite a while. Anyway. Considering that a considerable portion of the internet is devoted to porn these days, it would be interesting to know if someone has any kind of idea as to when and where the phenomena first arose? There must be some mention of this in old hacker folk lore? (Changed to CW to emphasize that this isn't about rep, but about genuine curiousity. :)

• Why does eth0 show an IP if I'm booting into runlevel 1?

  I'm having some issues with networking on a new Linux server I'm building. The OS is SLES 11. When booting into runlevel 1, I see that eth0 is showing an IP. Physically, there is a network cable plugged into the card associated with eth1, and then there is a network cable plugged into a QLogic iSCSI card (eth4, not shown). I've been troubleshooting this for awhile, and it seems like eth0 is somehow getting assigned an IP, even though it isn't configured in Linux or even plugged into the network for that matter. • Using 2-port LSI 2308-8e card to control 24 SAS HDDs

  I would like to rely on a RAID-on-chip solution to control 24 SAS hard drives in a direct-attached environment. How would you approach this to get best bandwidth given that I'd like to spend less than $10,000 on the interconnect. I've read that LSI 2308 chip can easily handle 8-drive SSD RAID6 in hardware. I'd like to harness its power to control 24 SAS hard drives over an expander in an external enclosure. Currently I use an Infortrend S24S-G2240 external enclosure. It provides its own controller and expander. I'd like to use LSI 2308 controller for RAID6 somehow instead of the mystery controller in the enclosure. P.S. I tried to create SAS-expander as a tag, but my rep on this site is low.

• SLA Violations - Compensation expectations and vague contracts

  Tagging this as cautionary tale. I took over for an admin a year and a half ago, and reviewed the 3 year contract with our ISP. There were no specific SLA promises in the contract that I found, and have been meaning to review the contract with our rep. Of course, we had an outage this past week that resulted in almost four days of downtime !!!!! This involves eff-ups of epic proportions on our ISP's part and a telco they colocate with. Details can be provided. I am the network / systems / purchasing / and helpdesk at my company...and am willing to fight with the ISP. I also have more management that can get involved, including the name on the contract. First, if there are not concrete guarantees about compensation and downtime, we are screwed right? Two, if we want out of our contract, does anyone have experience going the legal route, and if so, who knows a lawyer? =)

I basically want to allow Samba to write to my web docs without giving it free access to the operating system. I read a post by a NSA rep saying the best way was defining a new type and allowing both samba and httpd access. Setting the content to public content (public_content_rw_t) does not work without making use of some unrestrictive booleans. To state this in short, how do I allow samba to access a new type?

• Screen goes grey in Remote Desktop Connection from windows 7 to ubuntu server

  I recently got a 64 bit ubuntu server based on Ubuntu Desktop 12.04 "Precise Pangolin". However I can't seem to connect to it properly from my windows 7 64 bit machine. I can get to the login screen for ubuntu, and it seems to succeed in logging in, but then the screen just goes grey before anything comes up. (too low rep to post a picture) I installed xrdp on the server and attempt to connect using the standard windows Remote Desktop Connection program. I also ran the following 2 commands on the ubuntu machine to try get it to run but it was no help. echo "gnome-session --session=ubuntu-2d" > ~/.xsession and sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

• mod-rewrite: what's wrong with this simple rewrite to redirect to a subdirectory?

  the root directory http: // www .mydomain .com (SF won't let me post hyperlinks - rep is too low) has a catchall index.php page in it, and an .htaccess file. Within this root directoy I have a wordpress/ directory which contains (suprise surprise) a wordpress installation. My goal is that when the user types in http: // www .mydomain .com they are instead taken to http: // www .mydomain .com/wordpress Here is my rewrite rule: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/wordpress RewriteRule ^/(.*)$ http://%{SERVER_NAME}/wordpress/$1 [L] At the moment it appears to do nothing - it still loads index.php within the root directory. What should my rewrite rule be (I'm assuming the one I'm using is wrong)?

• Panic Transmit file upload

  I've ditched Coda and bought Transmit. I'm a little confused by the file uploading. I have exactly the same folder structure remotely and locally, but if I right-click a file and choose Upload "SomeFileName.html" The file is always uploaded into the root of the remote site, even if the file is in a folder. If I choose to upload a file at assets/images/some_image.png I would expect it to be uploaded to the same folder on the remote server, not the root. Coda dealt with this perfectly and also told me what files had been modified and needed uploading. Transmit doesn't seem to do either of these things. So my questions are: How can I upload a file to the same path on the remote server without having to drag and drop Is there any way to have Transmit mark edited files or upload only edited files. [There is no tag for Transmit so if someone with more rep could make and add one that would be grand]

  These days server naming is a bit of a lost art. Most large organizations don't allow for fanciful names and name their servers with jumbles of digits and letters. In the olden days just about every system administrator came up with a unique naming scheme, well, sometimes unique - many just settled for Star Trek characters. To this day my favorite server name is Qantas - a Unix server that Joel Spolsky has or used to have. Why Qantas? You'd have to ask Rainman. So my question is this - what is the coolest server name or naming convention that you encountered? Let the geekfest begin. OpenWRT + wpa_supplicant guide Carambola - works with OpenWRT (but probably not standalone?) Hornet-UB - works with OpenWRT Asus RT-N10+ + OpenWRT how-to EDIT 2: probably going to try TP-LINK TL-WR740N. It's a classic router, but can be flashed with OpenWRT, and the price beats everything else I've seen.

• How do laptop battery voltages affect runtime?

  I ordered a new battery for my faithful XPS M1710. I'm not sure of the voltage of the battery I have now, but the new one that the Dell rep got me (after 3-4 times confirming my phone number and laptop model number) is 14.8v. I was a bit concerned about potential incompatibilities (as most of the other compatible batteries listed were 11.1v), but I figure that there's no way that Dell would "recommend" batteries that wouldn't work or fry your system. Now, my question is, how does voltage affect battery life? If we assume the needed power draw to be constant, a higher voltage would indicate less amperage needed, therefore the battery would last longer before running out, yes? Or am I missing something? For reference: P=I*V P = power I = current V = voltage (duh)

• Asus Eee replacement netbook monitor doesn't fit connector

  I bought a replacement screen for an Asus Eee netbook 1005HA from a company that said the screen they were selling was compatible, but the connector on the replacement is smaller than the original. I've scoured the net for instructions, but so far, I'm out of luck. As far as I can tell, they both have 32 pins, but maybe I'm missing a connector? • Safari 7 SSL error if using IP-adress

  I have created my own CA for internal usage and set the root certificate to trustworthy on my machines. With this CA I signed the SSL-certificates for my internal servers. I only address them with their IP and so I used the servers' IP as certificate name. If i connect to the Servers with Chrome or mobile Safari it works without problems, but if I use Safari 7 under Mavericks (on the same machine with the same keychain) i get the following error: "The certificate is not valid (host name mismatch)". I double checked that I entered the correct IP ("https://192.168.2.130"), but I always get the same error. Do I need to enter a different name for the certificate or is it just that Safari doesn't support SSL certificates for IPs? • BSODs after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

  I just upgraded my system to Windows 8.1, and I have been getting BSODs that I did not get before the 8.1 upgrade. Though I cannot conclude that running the Android Emulator with Intel's HAXM is the cause, both crashes have occurred while the emulator was running. I get CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION, the same error as this guy, except I don't have the hardware/software that he has that caused his problem. Minidumps here. Output of verifier.exe /all and then a reboot and then verifier /query: http://sdrv.ms/17CPVu9 Edit: According to software.intel.com/en-us/forums/topic/475129 (can't link due to lack of rep) it is being caused by HAXM. Will close question when I find a solution.

• How can I access cpu temperature readings using c#?

  For a programming project I would like to access the temperature readings from my CPU and GPUs. I will be using C#. From various forums I get the impression that there is specific information and developer resources you need in order to access that information for various boards. I have a MSI NF750-G55 board. MSI's website does not have any of the information I am looking for. I tried their tech support and the rep I spoke with stated they do not have any such information. There must be a way to obtain that info. Any thoughts?

• Received a RAMPAGE IV FORMULA MOBO. Possible CPU Socket problems

  I recently received a Rampage IV Formula MOBO in a trade. From everything I read online this seems like a pretty nice piece of hardware. There's one thing I'm worried about though. It appears as though the socket where the CPU goes might have some bent/missing pins. I'm not exactly a computer expert and I wanted to know if this could be any sort of problem. I would post a picture but I apparently don't have enough rep for that... Also, if I did want to move my current rig onto the new MOBO would it even be worth it? MY CURRENT COMPUTER SPECS i3-3220 CPU 8GB DDR3 RAM GeForce GTX460 GPU With a Biostar MOBO!
