  • super light software development process

    hi, For the development process I have involved so far, most have teams of SINGLE member, or occasionally two. We used python + django for the major development, the development process is actually very fast, and we do have code reviews, design pattern discussions, and constant refactoring. Though team size is small, I do think there are some development processes / best practices that could be enforced. For example, using svn would be definitely better than regular copy backup. I did read some articles & books about Agile, XP & continuous integration, I think they are nice, but still too heavy for this case (team of 1 or 2, and fast coding). For example, IMHO, with nice design pattern, and iterative development + refactoring, the TDD MIGHT be an overkill, or at least the overhead does not out-weight the advantages. And so is the pair programming. The automated testing is a nice idea, but it seems not technically feasible for every project. our current practices are: svn + milestone + code review I wonder if there are development processes / best practices specifically targeted on such super light teams? thanks.

    Agile methodologies are rather prevalent these days, but I cannot seem to find much documentation on what metrics are most useful and why. I have found many more things saying that some traditional metrics like LOC and code coverage of tests are not appropriate, leaving two main questions: Why are those two (and other) metrics inappropriate? What metrics are best for Agile and why? Even with an Agile process, wouldn't you want to know how much code coverage you have with your unit tests? Or is it simply that this metric (and others) just are not as useful as other metrics like cyclomatic complexity and velocity?

  • Training speech recognition software

    A little left field, but I'm trying to train a speech recognition program and the guidelines suggest that I attempt to speak clearly but naturally. I notice, however, that when one speaks naturally each word tends to drift into the next, resulting in a rather ambiguous boundary between the words. One the one hand, speaking in a more stilted manner would seem to aid the computer in recognising the phonemes, but on the other it would tend to make it less likely to understand more natural speech. Anyone knowledgeable in the field out there who can suggest which of the two approaches is more effective? Thanks

  • Existing Calendar Software for Web Service?

    I'd like to offer users of my web platform calendars, and also offer group calendar and public calendar features. I know of Google Calendar API, of course, but that would require all my users to have Google accounts (although, I guess the question is who does not these days). I am wondering if there are any other alternatives? I can write my own, but this has gotten to have been done thousands of times already! I am looking not so much at the front end; we'd probably going to re-skin the UI anyways. But I want a solution that has good backend support for storing events and recurring events, and maintaining multiple calendars. Ideally, the engine would also support things like shared event between different calendars, syncing with other calendars, etc. Sad thing is that this does seem like Google Calendar would cover it, but asking all the users to have to have google accounts may not be realistic. Especially since we'd also want to create group calendars, and I am not sure under who's google account that'd be, and if that'd even be covered under their terms of use. Your thoughts? Thanks.

    As programmers, we've all put together a really cool program or pieced together some hardware in an interesting way to solve a problem. Today I was thinking about those hacks and how some of them are deprecated by modern technology (for example, you no longer need to hack your Tivo to add a network port). In the software world, we take things like drag-and-drop on a web page for granted now, but not too long ago that was a pretty exciting hack as well. One of the neatest hardware hacks I've seen was done by a former coworker at a telecom company years ago. He had a small portable television in his office and he would watch it all day long while working. To get away with it, he wired a switch to the on/off that was activated via his foot under his desk. What's the coolest hardware or software hack you've personally seen or done? What hack are you working on right now?

  • mdadm: Win7-install created a boot partition on one of my RAID6 drives. How to rebuild?

    My problem happened when I attempted to install Windows 7 on it's own SSD. The Linux OS I used which has knowledge of the software RAID system is on a SSD that I disconnected prior to the install. This was so that windows (or I) wouldn't inadvertently mess it up. However, and in retrospect, foolishly, I left the RAID disks connected, thinking that windows wouldn't be so ridiculous as to mess with a HDD that it sees as just unallocated space. Boy was I wrong! After copying over the installation files to the SSD (as expected and desired), it also created an ntfs partition on one of the RAID disks. Both unexpected and totally undesired! . I changed out the SSDs again, and booted up in linux. mdadm didn't seem to have any problem assembling the array as before, but if I tried to mount the array, I got the error message: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/md0, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so dmesg: EXT4-fs (md0): ext4_check_descriptors: Block bitmap for group 0 not in group (block 1318081259)! EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I then used qparted to delete the newly created ntfs partition on /dev/sdd so that it matched the other three /dev/sd{b,c,e}, and requested a resync of my array with echo repair > /sys/block/md0/md/sync_action This took around 4 hours, and upon completion, dmesg reports: md: md0: requested-resync done. A bit brief after a 4-hour task, though I'm unsure as to where other log files exist (I also seem to have messed up my sendmail configuration). EXT4-fs (md0): group descriptors corrupted! I'm a bit unsure where to proceed from here, and trying stuff "to see if it works" is a bit too risky for me. This is what I suggest I should attempt to do: Tell mdadm that /dev/sdd (the one that windows wrote into) isn't reliable anymore, pretend it is newly re-introduced to the array, and reconstruct its content based on the other three drives. I also could be totally wrong in my assumptions, that the creation of the ntfs partition on /dev/sdd and subsequent deletion has changed something that cannot be fixed this way. My question: Help, what should I do? If I should do what I suggested , how do I do that? From reading documentation, etc, I would think maybe: mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd However, the documentation examples suggest /dev/sdd1, which seems strange to me, as there is no partition there as far as linux is concerned, just unallocated space. Maybe these commands won't work without. Maybe it makes sense to mirror the partition table of one of the other raid devices that weren't touched, before --re-add. Something like: sfdisk -d /dev/sdb | sfdisk /dev/sdd Bonus question: Why would the Windows 7 installation do something so st...potentially dangerous? Update I went ahead and marked /dev/sdd as faulty, and removed it (not physically) from the array: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --set-faulty /dev/sdd # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --remove /dev/sdd However, attempting to --re-add was disallowed: # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --re-add /dev/sdd mdadm: --re-add for /dev/sdd to /dev/md0 is not possible --add, was fine. # mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sdd mdadm -D /dev/md0 now reports the state as clean, degraded, recovering, and /dev/sdd as spare rebuilding. /proc/mdstat shows the recovery progress: md0 : active raid6 sdd[4] sdc[1] sde[3] sdb[0] 3907026848 blocks super 1.2 level 6, 4k chunk, algorithm 2 [4/3] [UU_U] [>....................] recovery = 2.1% (42887780/1953513424) finish=348.7min speed=91297K/sec nmon also shows expected output: ¦sdb 0% 87.3 0.0| > |¦ ¦sdc 71% 109.1 0.0|RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR > |¦ ¦sdd 40% 0.0 87.3|WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW > |¦ ¦sde 0% 87.3 0.0|> || It looks good so far.   • Aldon and .Net Development

    I'm looking for feedback from .Net developers who have experience with Aldon as a lifecycle management platform. We're seriously considering using Aldon for lifecycle management including source control, automated builds, etc. I know there are a lot of other options out there, but ours is primary an AS/400 shop (with AS/400 programmers outnumbering .Net developers 6 to 1), and Aldon is used already by our iSeries team. The benefit we're looking for is having one lifecycle management suite. Basically, I'm looking for opinions from people who have used Aldon and another set of tools (perhaps TFS, or a combination of SVN, Cruise Control, etc). If you've worked with both, do you have a recommendation on whether this is a good idea, or a bad idea? It's obviously a big choice, so any feedback would be helpful.

    Hi. A few days ago i had the idea to create a company library since my company has no training and many developers still develop as they did when they learned it 5 years ago. My hope is that they can lend books, read them and hopefully learn something from them (for example: object oriented programming or unit testing, which noone here knows how to use). After asking around most agreed that it was a good idea, so i brought my books, made a simple printed sheet with "Book A belongs to B" and "Developer A took the Book on dd.mm.yyyy" to get it started. Now i want to get some ideas for Books that i could add to the shelf (sadly from my own money since 100€/month for training is too much money for this multi-million euro company). We develop mostly PHP & MySQL so books specific to this topic would be preferred but i think if people learn other languages they might get ideas on how to develop better with the current language so other books are ok, too. Which books would you recommend? PS: Personally i'd like to add some Project Management books, too, as it's a topic i'm interested in, eventhough i'm just a junior developer (We've got Peopleware already, great book btw).

    I have a gps device that records data e.g. datetime, latitude, longitude I have an sdk that reads the data from the device. The way the data is read: A command packet (basically a combination of int values in a struct) is sent to the device. The device responds with the data in fixed size chunks e.g. 64bytes Depending on the command issued I will get back differect data structs e.g. sending command 1 to the device returns a struct like struct x { id int, name char[20] } command 2 returns a collection of the following structs (basically it boils down to an array of the structs - y[12]) struct y { date datetime, lat decimal, lon decimal } I would then want to convert the struct to a class and save the data to a database. What would be the best way to encapsulate the entire process, preferably using some established design pattern? Many thanks M

    A discussion elsewhere made me realize that I don't do a particularly good job of following the software industry. My exposure to new trends or technologies is haphazard at best, often limited to a "Hey, that sounds interesting" when I see people discussing something I'm not familiar with on SO. To abuse a metaphor, I'm quite familiar with the tree where I work, but I know too bloody little about the rest of the forest. How do other folks keep abreast of what's going on in the software industry? Are there any sites/blogs/podcasts/whatever that you find particularly valuable for keeping you informed of potentially useful new technologies or industry-wide trends? (My apologies in advance if this is a duplicate; this feels like something that ought to have been asked before, but alas, my search-fu has failed me.)
