    I have an error message like this: <span class="errorMessage">Your input sucks!</span> and I need to determine when it changes. the validation framework I'm using sets the text when there's an error and removes it when it's complete. I'm hoping to tap into that by watching for changes to the text property of the element using jquery. Any idea of how to go about doing this? Thanks!

I don't want to get hold of the strings, I want the array items to be the elements (in the example, would be the p node). I do not know before hand what the strings will be, so I can't look for string values to match. I also don't want empty text nodes to end up in the array. Thanks!

  • A big flat text file or a HTML site for language documentation?

    A project of mine is a small embeddable Tcl-like scripting language, LIL. While i'm mostly making it for my own use, i think it is interesting enough for others to use, so i want it to have a nice (but not very "wordy") documentation. So far i'm using a single flat readme.txt file. It explains the language's syntax, features, standard functions, how to use the C API, etc. Also it is easy to scan and read in almost every environment out there, from basic text-only terminals to full-fledged high-end graphical desktop environments. However, while i tried to keep things nicely formatted (as much as this is possible in plain text), i still think that being a big (and growing) wall of text, it isn't as easy on the eyes as it could be. Also i feel that sometimes i'm not writing as much as i want in order to avoid expanding the text too much. So i thought i could use another project of mine, QuHelp, which is basically a help site generator for sites like this one with a sidebar that provides a tree of topics/subtopics and offline full text search. With this i can use HTML to format the documentation and if i use QuHelp for some other project that uses LIL, i can import LIL's documentation as part of the other project's documentation. However converting the existing documentation to QuHelp/HTML isn't a small task, especially when it comes to functions (i'll need to put more detail on them than what currently exists in the readme.txt file). Also it loses the wide range of availability that it currently has (even if QuHelp's generated code degrades gracefully down to console-only web browsers, plain text is readable from everywhere, including from popular editors such as Vim and Emacs - i had someone once telling me that he likes LIL's documentation because it is readable without leaving his editor). So, my question is simply this: should i keep the documentation as it is now in the form of a single readme.txt file or should i convert it to something like the site i mentioned above? There is also the option to do both, but i'm not sure if i'll be able to always keep them in sync or if it is worth the effort. After asking around in IRC i've got mixed answers: some liked the wide availability of the single text file, others said that it is looks as bad as a man page (personally i don't mind that - i can read man pages just fine - but other people might have issues reading them). What do you think?

  • How to trace a function array argument in DTrace

    I still use dtrace just about every day in my job and found that I had to print an argument to a function which was an array of strings.  The array was variable length up to about 10 items.  I'm not sure if the is the right way to do it, but it seems to work and is not too painful if the array size is small.Here's an example.  Suppose in your application, you have the following function, where n is number of item in the array s.void arraytest(int n, char **s){    /* Loop thru s[0] to s[n-1] */}How do you use DTrace to print out the values of s[i] or of s[0] to s[n-1]?  DTrace does not have if-then blocks or for loops, so you can't do something like:    for i=0; i<arg0; i++        trace arg1[i]; It turns out that you can use probe ordering as a kind of iterator. Probes with the same name will fire in the order that they appear in the script, so I can save the value of "n" in the first probe and then use it as part of the predicate of the next probe to determine if the other probe should fire or not.  So the first probe for tracing the arraytest function is:pid$target::arraytest:entry{    self->n = arg0;}Then, if I want to print out the first few items of the array, I first check the value of n.  If it's greater than the index that I want to print out, then I can print that index.  For example, if I want to print out the 3rd element of the array, I would do something like:pid$target::arraytest:entry/self->n > 2/{    printf("%s",stringof(arg1 + 2 * sizeof(pointer)));}Actually, that doesn't quite work because arg1 is a pointer to an array of pointers and needs to be copied twice from the user process space to the kernel space (which is where dtrace is). Also, the sizeof(char *) is 8, but for some reason, I have to use 4 which is the sizeof(uint32_t).   • Vim style cursor movement for Notepad++

    I was just wondering if there was a way to get "vim" style cursor movement (i.e. 'hkjl' movement). After spending much time with vim, I have gotten used to not having to life my hands off the keyboard to move around a text document (going to the arrow keys is also too disruptive :p). Moving back to vim is always an option, but if there was a way to get this feature on notepad++. I have already spent some time in setting up macros and plugins to get my notepad++ environment working the way I want it to. Any help on this matter would be much appreciated.

    On Windows I use the PSPad editor which has a nice ALT-D timestamp which you can edit the format of, e.g. yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss. When working outside an editor, e.g. Google Docs, I have Autohotkey which I have programmed CTRL-D to insert a yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss timestamp. I am now working on a Mac mostly using TextWrangler as my editor but I can't find a timestamp hotkey in its features. What is the easiest way to get a yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss hotkey on Mac, either in a (free) text editor or a (free) autohotkey equivalent?

  • How do I make vim's autoindent not drop trailing spaces?

    In some text editors (e.g. Kate, gedit), when auto indent is enabled, pressing return twice will leave a trailing whitespace (which I want): if (code) { .... ....| } While others cater to the coding standard where trailing spaces (even in blank lines) aren't allowed: if (code) { ....| } What annoys me about this is that if I arrow up after auto-indenting, the auto-indent is lost: if (code) { | .... } If I run vim and :set autoindent , I get the latter behavior. My question is, how do I set vim to keep the trailing spaces rather than automatically removing them if they go unused?

  • Search and replace global modifier

    Is there any reason why non-global/first-occurrence substitution is the default in many text editing programs (vim, sed, perl, etc.)? I am talking about the /g flag of search and replace commands like: :s/pan/focaccia/g # in vim sed 's/sfortuna/fortuna/g' # with sed that will substitute every occurrence of the search pattern with the replacement string. After (not too) many years of vim and sed usage I still did not find any use case for non-global substitutions. Is there some valid historical reason? Or it is because it is? Thanks.
