  • Ubuntu on VPS becomes unresponsive: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s

    We have a VPS running Ubuntu, on Xen. The problem is this, about once a day, for about 20-50 minutes, at a random time, the server becomes completely unresponsive to the outside world. After this period, it becomes responsive again, as if nothing had happened, it doesn't lose uptime, it doesn't restart. It just starts responding again as if it had been in suspended animation. These outages occur under conditions of non-exceptional memory and cpu, for example 70% mem, 5% cpu. I have stopped all non-essential services so the usage is very even. These outages don't particularly occur during times of increased memory/cpu (during daily tasks), they sometimes occur at times of very low cpu use (<2%), but in the past also occured during swapping. These blackouts have been occurring both under Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - no change at all (I upgraded Ubuntu specifically to see if it helped this problem). It is possible to log into our webhosts site, and use their administration console to see error messages from during this time. Presumably, these messages are from the Xen virtualization, the main message goes like this: BUG: soft lockp - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [ksoftireqd/0:3] (repeats many times) SysRq : Emergency Sync (Sometimes this is the only message in the console) Others seen previously under different load situations include: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [swapper/0:0] (repeated many times) or: INFO: rcu_sched detected stall on CPU 0 (t=15000 jiffies) (repeated many times with t getting bigger) From googling around I've tried various kernel parameters such as nohz=off and acpi=off to no avail. All tech support has said is that other Ubuntu installations are not suffering the same problem. Anyone got any ideas or experience with this problem?

Bash has colours There's lots more, just not something i can recall on the spot. Then, i go to ubuntu and its all black and white, no nice vim config etc. I have to use Ubuntu, and I hate ubuntu because of this. I know I can all configure it by myself, so my question is: How can I configure the Ubuntu system to behave (aesthetically) like CentOS? PS to future self: I will be stoned to death for asking such a question.

    Hello, could anyone help me to boot ubuntu-9.04 from usb hard disk? This disk contains /boot primary partition. During ubuntu installation I used "Advanced" button and asked to install GRUB to the /boot partition. Later I checked whether GRUB files are really present in this partition. They are. However, I get stuck while trying to boot. The boot menu ("ubuntu generic version", "ubuntu recovery mode", etc...) is not shown. Instead I am thrown to GRUB minimal bash-like version. I feel at a loss and have no idea why I am pointed to this minimal version. Can anybody prompt me what to do?

    My laptop has Windows 7 and Ubuntu 13.10 installed alongside each other. My laptop has two 225GB hard drives. I give Ubuntu 133.65GB and I give Windows 87.76GB on the same hard drive (C). My problem now is that Windows is almost out of space but Ubuntu is only using a few GB of the 133.65GB that I gave it. I want to reduce Ubuntu's partition size and give that space to increase Windows partition size. Is that any program that can to do this?

    Where does Ubuntu store profiles that allow it to remember the credentials to private wireless networks that it has previously authenticate to and used? I just replaced my Uncle's hard drive with a new one and installed Ubuntu 10.04 on it (he had Ubuntu 9.10 on his old hard drive. He is at my house right now, and I want him to be able to access his private wireless network when he gets home. Usually, when I upgrade Ubuntu, I have his /home directory on another partition, so his wireless profile to his own network persists. However, right now, I'm trying to figure out which .folder I need to copy from his /home/user folder on the old hard drive, to the new hard drive, so that he will be able to have wireless Internet when he gets home. Does anyone know with certainty, exactly which folder I need to copy to the new hard drive to achieve this?

    Got a problem with browsing samba shares with nautilus in ubuntu i can see workgroups but cannot go any deeper. On the other hand i can use smbclient and mount samba shares from command line. Also i can browse ubuntu shares from windows but not vise versa. So i suspect it is nautilus problem. Moreover it has never been working for me since very first ubuntu i used. Systems i tryed to browse shares on: Ubuntu 8-12 Windows Xp 7 Dune HD Max Could someone provide me with ideas how to diagnose this issue?     Is there something I should do to my networking configuration in Ubuntu to better the performance of my wireless connection? I'm on a netbook dual-booting Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10. I pick up much stronger wifi signal when in Windows than Ubuntu. As soon as I boot Ubuntu, it will connect to the network with a stronger signal, and then loses signal very quickly. After it dies, I can't reconnect. I've tested this on a couple of different networks with the same outcome.

    I have tried a few things like disabling the Intel smart response, choosing AHCI in BIOS. But there are certain problems I am still facing. I can't see my SSD during the installation of ubuntu (I am planning to install Ubuntu on my SSD and other files on HDD). When I run Ubuntu my laptop gets overheated and battery backup reduces to 90 minutes. (I guess it's related to my graphic driver ATI Raedon HD 7570). Cooling fan seems to run at its fullest, it was working much better in windows. So, overall I wanted to know what are the exact steps I need to follow to install Ubuntu on my SSD and then use my HDD to keep other files, How can I get rid of overheating and battery backup problem?

    I am having problems pinging from a 5505(remote) to IP 10.160.70.10 in the network behind the 5540(HQ side). 5505 inside IP: 10.56.0.1 Out: 71.43.109.226 5540 Inside: 10.1.0.8 out: 64.129.214.27 I Can ping from 5540 to 5505 inside 10.56.0.1. I also ran ASDM packet tracer in both directions, it is ok from 5540 to 5505, but drops the packet from 5505 to 5540. It gets through the ACL and dies at the NAT.     I installed XEN on Ubuntu 8.04 using this tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-8.04-server-install-xen-from-ubuntu-repositories but after I reboot with the XEN kernel, I don't have xenbr0 device. I see that network-bridge script runs and it creates peth0 device, but not xenbr0. I have a very basic IP setup, with a single static IP defined in /etc/network/interfaces. The only unusual thing is that my hosting (1&1) gave me a netmask 255.255.255.255, so I had to add the default gateway with this script: /sbin/route add -host 10.255.255.1 dev eth0 /sbin/route add default gw 10.255.255.1 Everything else is plain vanilla Ubuntu 8.04.

Since Hyper-V is a Type-0 hipervisor, may I know does this bring the same benefit if I have Ubuntu Linux install as a virtual guess OS? Meaning, if I turning the Ubuntu on (the guess OS), does the Ubuntu still able to access the hardware information like nVidia display card or processor information? I'm just curious to know can this be done?

  • Galaxy Tab 3 producing continuous LightSensor error in LogCat

    I am using a Galaxy Tab 3 as a test device for writing an android app. As such I'm interested in the output of the LogCat which is being filled with these error level messages. The device itself appears to work correctly, apps which rely on the light sensor correctly respond to it and the number in the error itself goes down if the light sensor is obscured. If I wasn't using it to develop apps I wouldn't even be aware of the issue but I believe it is an issue with the device itself not my app: simply plugging the tab 3 into the computer and using Eclipse - ADT to look at the LogCat without any app running leads to these errors being shown. I know I could filter the LogCat to ignore these errors but inconvenience aside; they concern me. A sample of the log cat is below (it generates errors continuously). This is on verbose so it includes some debug level (D/) messages as well as the error level messages (E/).   • All browsers hang on windows 7 in tab says 'Waiting for...' need restart

    I'm having a frustrating problem with browsers on OS windows 7 home premium. IE 10: My web browsing works ok for a while and then pages freeze and tab at top says "Waiting for ...' and never loads. Strangely I can still get to Google search results but if I click anything it freezes. Chrome freezes too and says 'The page has become unresponsive ...kill page' Safari stops also. I have tried clearing cookies, cache, turning off Bitdefender firewall and nothing apart from a restart fixes it. consequently I am forced to restart my computer several times a day to stop this browser hang. I have no idea what could be causing this ..any help greatly appreciated.

  • Compiz and Desktop Effects on Netbook with External Monitor

    I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off. I've seen a few mentions of this problem on the Ubuntu forums, but never a solid solution. Any ideas? A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB). In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.
