    I'm hosting multiple sites from one server where each site has it's own user and www directory in their home dir. Currently our web server runs as user nobody(99). We're noticing that to run several popular scripts and engines, they require write access to their own files. As the home directory is owned by the user, not nobody(99), what is the best policy or change in hosting configuration that would: ...make it so that all the various engines and platforms work? ...still allow us to work with files and edit them without having to diddle with permissions as root?     I haven't used Linux in 5+ years, aside from d/l occasional system recovery CDs off DistroWatch, so I don't know the current landscape. Related postings on this forum are several years old & may not relate to my hardware (Compaq 6710b laptop, Core2Duo Centrino). Requirements: Use the Compaq 6710b laptop's WiFi out of the box enough frequently updated pre-made packages for web hosting & development (Nginx & node.js are biggest concerns, everyone has Apache & PHP, & I'm not crazy about building from source) prefer be easy enough to use, but outside help available (so a small user-base distro is only OK if the community is active & a major disto's packages are compatable) configuration easy to transfer to outside web hosts. You have actually installed/used recommended disto (don't have to be expert) TIA!

    We have a Windows Client/(SQL-)Server application which is normally installed at the customer's premises. We now need to provide a hosted solution, and browser-based isn't feasible in the short term. We're considering hosting the database ourselves, and also hosting the client in a VM. We can set all this up easily enough, so we need to: ensure that the customer can connect easily, and also ensure that we suitably restrict access to the VM (and its host, of course) We already access the host and guest machines across the internet via RDS, but we restrict access to it to only our own internal, very small, set of static IPs, and of course theres the 2 (or 3?)-user limit on RDS connections to a remote server. So I'd greatly appreciate ideas on how to manage: the security the multi-user aspect. We're hoping to be able to do this initially without a large investment in virtualisation infrastructure - it would be one customer only to start with, with perhaps two remote users. Thanks!

    I'm a software developer and my workstation is running Win7 Ultimate, 64bit. I want to run a virtual PC on which I can deploy and run the web-software I create, as a virtual web-server PC. I want the VM to also be Windows as that's what I know, the version isn't too important but on that PC I want to run things like MySQL, TomCat, etc. I see VMWare make 'Player', also I see VirtualBox and I know MS also have solutions too, which I've heard good things about. Does it make much difference which I use as far as creating & using VMs? Or are they all pretty similar?

    As Hosting.com are no longer offerring Windows VPS accounts, we are looking for a new US based provider. Looking for something that offers standard Windows IIS hosting for a Dotnetnuke portal site with SQL Server Express or Web. Basic managed services for OS updates as well as regular backups required. Good level of support and solid uptime is critical. Budget in the $150-$200 month range but flexible depeding on quality and services offerred. Anyone have any suggestions and good feedback they can share? Currently looking at Jodohost as an option but would like some other possibilities as their support can be suspect at times we have found. A cloud solution in same range would also be an option.

    Can anyone help me to figure out how to scrawl file hosting website like filefactory.com? I don't want to download all the file hosted but just to index all available files with scrapy. I have read the tutorial and docs with respect to spider class for scrapy. If I only give the website main page as the begining url I wouldn't not scrawl the whole site, because the scrawling depends on links but the begining page seems not point to any file pages. That's the problem I am thinking and any help would be appreciated!
