• Cannot install or remove packages

  I tried to install the openoffice.org package but it gave an error. Now i cannot repair, remove or install nothing. The Software center of xubuntu gives this error log. Nothing seems to solve this. I tried apt-get install -f but it does not solve the problem either. Any suggestions? installArchives() failed: (Reading database ... • Upgrade issues due to broken "dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic" error

  okay, I've recently upgrade from 11.10 to 12.04 and I've been having some issues. I don't know if its a bug or not, but I thought I would submit it here. Okay here's a little background; I ran the distro update from the update manager and got a couple errors that I didn't catch. the computer restarted, and when I logged the Launcher and my top bar of the Ubuntu desktop didn't load. While it was trying to load a couple error messages came up, I think they were called "apport", saying they couldn't send the bug information for some reason. I believe it said somethings wrong with my internet connection, but nothing's wrong with it. Anyway I tried running some things in terminal, namely sudo apt-get -f install sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and keep getting the following errors; dustin@marceau-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade [sudo] password for dustin: Reading package lists... • The best computer ever

  (This is a repost from my personal blog… wow… I need to write more technical stuff!) About three years and three months ago, I bought a 17" MacBook Pro, and it turned out to be the best computer I've ever owned. You might think that every computer with better specs is automatically better than the last, but that hasn't been my experience. My first one was a Sony, back in the Pentium III days, and it cost an astonishing $2,500. That was even more ridiculous in 1999 dollars. It had a dial-up modem, and a CD-ROM, built-in! It may have even played DVD's. A few years later I bought an HP, and it ended up being a pile of shit. The power connector inside came loose from the board, and on occasion would even short. In 2005, I bought a Dell, and it wasn't bad. It had a really high resolution screen (complete with dead pixels, a problem in those days), and it was the first laptop I felt I could do real work on. When 2006 rolled around, Apple started making computers with Intel CPU's, and I bought the very first one the week it came out. I used Boot Camp to run Windows. I still have it in its box somewhere, and I used it for three years. The current 17" was new in 2009. The goodness was largely rooted in having a big screen with lots of dots. This computer has been the source of hundreds of blog posts, tens of thousands of lines of code, video and photo editing, and of course, a whole lot of Web surfing. It connected to corpnet at Microsoft, WiFi in Hawaii and has presented many a deck. It has traveled with me tens of thousands of miles. Last year, I put a solid state drive in it, and it was like getting a new computer. I can boot up a Windows 7 VM in about 19 seconds. Having 8 gigs of RAM has always been fantastic. Everything about it has been fast and fun. When new, the battery (when not using VM's) could get as much as 10 hours. I can still do 7 without much trouble. After 460 charge cycles, the battery health is still between 85 and 90%. The only real negative has been the size and weight. It's only an inch thick, but naturally it's pretty big with a 17" screen. You don't get battery life like that without a huge battery, either, so it's heavy. It was never a deal breaker, but sometimes a long haul across a large airport, you know you're carrying it. Today, Apple announced a new, thinner and lighter 15" laptop, with twice the RAM and CPU cores, and four times the screen resolution. It basically handles my size and weight issues while retaining the resolution, and it still costs less than my 17" did. So I ordered one. Three years is an excellent run, but I kind of budgeted for a new workhorse this year anyway. So if you're interested in a 17" MacBook Pro with a Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz CPU, 8 gigs of RAM and a 320 gig hard drive (sorry, I'm keeping the SSD), I have one to sell. They've apparently discontinued the 17", which is going to piss off the video community. It's in excellent condition, with a few minor scratches, but I take care of my stuff.

• Computer crashes and won't start, LED indicator blinks slowly

  I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard coupled with a AMD Athlon 3700+ and an Antec TPII-550 power supply. The computer crashes at random times in operation, sometimes taking a while to crash, and sometimes crashing right after Windows XP shows the desktop after boot. The CPU temperature is always in the safe range, usually 30-33 degrees Celsius, and swapping the RAM has not done anything, so the crashes aren't cause by the RAM. What could be causing this? If the motherboard were fried, would the computer even boot at all? What causes inconsistent crashing of the computer? After the computer crashes, the LED power indicator blinks about once a second, and the computer does not respond to the power button. This behavior continues until the computer's power supply is completely removed.

• Easy Transfer from a dead computer

  I had a computer that electrocuted me and the company sent me a new one. The hard drive from the old computer works fine and is in my new computer. I would like to transfer my files from the old drive to the new one, preferably using Easy Transfer (old & new computers were Win7). When I go through the Easy Transfer wizard, it assumes my old computer is running and that I can run a process to backup all my data to a single file. However, in my case I have the system drive in my new computer and want to pull the data off it. I would like to avoid rebooting the old computer, to avoid damage to myself or my data. I would like to avoid booting into the old system drive, as my new hardware is significantly different and I imagine I'll run into some missing hardware issues. What's the easiest way to get my data off this drive?

• "Computer Locked" dialog does not appear

  When I lock my computer, instead of seeing the "Computer Locked" dialog, I only see the "Unlock Computer" dialog with my user name populated and my password box has focus. I am not prompted to Ctrl+Alt+Del to first get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. This concerns, as nearly all of my other Windows XP machines do display the "Computer Locked" dialog and force a Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence to get to the "Unlock Computer" dialog. I cannot find a setting, registry or otherwise, that addresses this. I am running Windows XP Pro (version 2002) SP3

• Create a Shortcut to Put Your Windows Computer into Hibernation

  Putting your Windows computer into Hibernation Mode allows you to save power, and quickly access your desktop again when you need it. Here we show how to create a shortcut to put your PC in Hibernation Mode quickly. Note: Here we show how to create the shortcut in Windows 7 and add it to the Taskbar. But creating the shortcut should work in XP and Vista as well. Create Shortcut  Right-click an empty area on your desktop and select New \ Shortcut from the Context Menu. In the Create Shortcut window type or copy the following in the location field… C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll, SetSuspendState 0,1,0 Now give the shortcut a name such as Hibernate Computer or whatever you want to call it. Now you have the shortcut on your desktop, but you might want to change the icon to something else. Change Shortcut Icon Right-click the shortcut icon and select Properties. Select the Shortcut Tab and click the Change Icon button. In the Look for icons in this file field copy and past the following then click OK. %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll This brings up a list of included Windows icons you can choose from. Select whatever you want it to be. There are a couple of Power icons in the directory…click OK. Of course you can choose any icon you want, if you customize your icons just browse to the directory they are in. For more on selecting icons check out our article on how to customize your icons in Windows 7 or how to change a file type’s icon. Now you will see the icon in the Shortcut Properties window, click OK. Here we have a nice looking shortcut that you can use to put your machine into Hibernation. Or here we used a customized Star Trek icon just to make things more interesting… You can pin the shortcut to the Taskbar for easy access. Conclusion If Hibernation is not enabled on your Windows 7 system you can easily manage it. By creating a shortcut and pinning to the Taskbar, it allows you to put your machine into Hibernation Mode quick and easy. • Dell Inspiron 1120 Ubuntu Light -> Desktop and now I'm having problems with wifi and suspend

  I got a Dell Inspiron 1120 which ships with Ubuntu Light, as well as Windows. My wife prefers Ubuntu, but obviously outside of web stuff, you can't do a lot with Light, so I went ahead and installed the Desktop version of Ubuntu (10.10 / maverick). Whereas before it suspended beautifully and connected to wifi networks flawlessly, it now displays the following problems: It seems to suspend ok, but on resume, the screen remains blank, even though the computer appears to wake up again. Wifi doesn't connect. I tried using the suggested proprietary drivers, and those don't seem to change the situation. All in all, a bit frustrating to run into these sorts of "regressions" - does anyone know what sort of drivers and such Ubuntu Light might have shipped with for this computer that made it work so well? Unfortunately, I wiped the disk in order to install the Desktop version of Ubuntu.

• Ubuntu 11.10 on MacBook Air 2011 - problems with drivers

  I had just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my MacBook Air, and have a lot of problems. I used this tutorial, after executing script and rebooting some problems were solved, but now I have completely not working touchpad, keyboard & screen backlight works incorrect (screen brightness is not 100%, but it is 100% in settings, keyboard backlight turns on/off randomly). How to fix it? P. S. Script said that it's no such file or directory for some .icc file. Google says, that I should copy it from Mac OS X drive, but I completely replaced it with Ubuntu.

• PXE booting on old computer

  So my computer is not working - the disk is totally cleared, I've deleted GRUB and PLOP which I used to install new system, because CD-Rom is broken and BIOS is old (whole computer is old, it's Sony Vaio PCG-GR250) so it won't allow me to do it via USB and I got no floppy drive :) the only way is to PXE boot PLOP and install Linux from USB after PLOP has been opened. (I'm not a specialist but that's how I see it) I'm using Mac OS X 10.9 and I followed number of tutorials how to set up TFTP and DHCP server and I got PLOP here, but when I boot up with PXE it says that it found DHCP but TFTP timed out. • SQL SERVER – Concurrancy Problems and their Relationship with Isolation Level

  Concurrency is simply put capability of the machine to support two or more transactions working with the same data at the same time. This usually comes up with data is being modified, as during the retrieval of the data this is not the issue. Most of the concurrency problems can be avoided by SQL Locks. There are four types of concurrency problems visible in the normal programming. 1)      Lost Update – This problem occurs when there are two transactions involved and both are unaware of each other. The transaction which occurs later overwrites the transactions created by the earlier update. 2)      Dirty Reads – This problem occurs when a transactions selects data that isn’t committed by another transaction leading to read the data which may not exists when transactions are over. Example: Transaction 1 changes the row. Transaction 2 changes the row. Transaction 1 rolls back the changes. Transaction 2 has selected the row which does not exist. 3)      Nonrepeatable Reads – This problem occurs when two SELECT statements of the same data results in different values because another transactions has updated the data between the two SELECT statements. Example: Transaction 1 selects a row, which is later on updated by Transaction 2. When Transaction A later on selects the row it gets different value. 4)      Phantom Reads – This problem occurs when UPDATE/DELETE is happening on one set of data and INSERT/UPDATE is happening on the same set of data leading inconsistent data in earlier transaction when both the transactions are over. Example: Transaction 1 is deleting 10 rows which are marked as deleting rows, during the same time Transaction 2 inserts row marked as deleted. When Transaction 1 is done deleting rows, there will be still rows marked to be deleted. When two or more transactions are updating the data, concurrency is the biggest issue. I commonly see people toying around with isolation level or locking hints (e.g. NOLOCK) etc, which can very well compromise your data integrity leading to much larger issue in future. • Flash completely freeze computer

  Since this morning, and ever so frequently, Flash will completely freeze the computer as soon as something launches it. First, the web page will stop responding, then the entire browser, and after about 2 seconds, the mouse and keyboard will stop responding and the computer will escalate to 100% usage, and all that's left is to perform a hard reboot. I tried re-installing Flash, downgrade my kernel, nothing will do. I'm running Mint 13 64-bit (based on Ubuntu 12.04) with XFCE (not Xubuntu, I installed XFCE as separate package). It never freezes otherwise, so I know it's caused by Flash. How do I solve this issue? What could cause this?

• Gnome 3 after run has graphic problems

  I have 3d accelarator but gnome still doesn't work My pc enters gnome desktop bu there i have graphic problems! Graphic problems with the top taskbar and wherever i click it, my desktop transforms into gnome clasic desktop. • External USB hard drive makes noises when the computer is turned off

  I have an external USB hard drive of 500GB. I can't tell what model it is exactly, as nothing specific is written on it and I don't have the box anymore. I use it as a backup disk. It works absolutely fine when the computer is turned on: no problems with writing or reading, and everything is done in dead silence. However, if I turn the computer off and the disk is still connected, it stays on and makes clicking noises. For that reason I only connect it when I need to back up or restore. Does that mean there's a problem with the disk, or with some preferences in the system itself? Or something else?

• Multiple problems using BOINC in Ubuntu 12.04

  I installed Berkeley's BOINC software in Windows and I loved it, however I'm having the following problems using it in Ubuntu 12.04: 1) The software doesn't appear in the systray, only in the Unity dock (left side) 2) I can minimize BOINC to the dock but when I open and close other program it maximizes again, wich is very annoying 3) The software can't be closed, it only minimizes to the Unity dock, and nothing happens using right click and close either 4) The software doesn't start at startup or as a startup application 5) It doesn't have a screensaver like in Windows I know it's a lot a problems, but I hope they can be fixed, because I love to use this software, and knowing it's open-software it would be a shame it didn't run on Ubuntu like it should.

• Computer logout after closing the lid

  I would like my computer to logout every time I close the lid. And by that I mean log out completely. Basically I want the startup applications to run every time I open the lid to my computer. Right now, it just locks the screen and comes right back when I type in my password. It would be really great if I can have it such that the startup applications run every time I open the lid. However, would logging out lose any unsaved files? Alternatively, do you know if there is a way to run a command every time I open the lid? Thanks!

• Firefox really slows down my computer

  I love Firefox; it has a special place in my heart. However, using the default Firefox in Ubuntu eventually causes my computer to freeze and crash. Nothing more to the problem, just the performance of Firefox really sucks, therefor causing a system-wide freeze. How do I know this? I use Google Chrome mostly, and other programs. None of them ever made my computer freeze. Is it an Update problem? If so, can I install a different version of Firefox from Mozilla.com? What's the deal here?

• Computer refuses to boot either ubuntu disk I'm using

  I'm attempting to set up an Amahi server, and thus have taken an older PC and wiped it clean using DBAN. I'm now in the process of installing Ubuntu, but for some reason the computer refuses to recognize either form of Ubuntu I throw at it, even though it recognizes the Windows XP CD fine. Things it can't be: Boot order - I've tripple checked A bad DVD - I've booted the live CD off of my Mac just fine. A drive issue - the drive boots other cd's just fine, I've tested both an XP and the ultimate boot disk for windows... they are booting fine. A drive conflict - I have unplugged the only hard drive, leaving the DVD drive alone, still no recognition. I've tried both Ubuntu 12 and an older Ubuntu 10 CD, it refuses to recognize either one. It's like my computer has decided it will have nothing to do with Ubuntu. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• Discover Why Computer Shut Down

  I was at school SSHing to my homebox. All of a sudden, my connection was closed. Attempting to reconnect failed. When I returned home, I discovered that my computer was off. Nobody was at my house and I am sure that I did not have a power outage. How can I figure out how or why my computer shut off? Is there some log in /var/log that could point me in the right direction? Should there be a core dump somewhere that I should find? If so, how do I use core dumps?
