• Running an intern program

  This year I am running an unpaid internship program for high school students. I work for a small company. We have ideas for a few side projects but never have time to do them. So we experiment by making them intern projects. In return, we give these interns guidance to learn, personal attentions, and opportunities with real-world projects. A few years ago, I blogged about the idea of teaching kids to write application with no more than 6 hours of training. This time, I was able to reduce the instruction time to 4 hours and immediately put them into real work projects. When they encounter problems, I combine directions, pointer to various materials on w3school, Udacity, Codecademy and UTube, as well as encouraging them to  search for solutions with search engines. Now entering the third week, I am more than encouraged and feeling accomplished. Our the most senior intern, Christopher Chen, is a recent high school graduate and is heading to UC Berkeley to study computer science after the summer. He previously only had one year of Java experience through the AP computer science course but had no web development experience. Only 12 days into his internship, he has already gain advanced css skills with deeper understanding than more than half of the “senior” developers that I have ever worked with. I put him on a project to migrate an existing website to the Orchard content management system (CMS) with which I am new as well. We were able to teach each other and quickly gain advanced Orchard skills such as creating custom theme and modules. I felt very much a relationship similar to the those between professors and graduate students. On the other hand, I quite expect that I will lose him the next summer to companies like Google, Facebook or Microsoft. As a side note, Christopher and I will do a two part Orchard presentations together at the next SoCal code camp at UC San Diego July 27-28. The first part, “creating an Orchard website on Azure in 60 minutes”, is an introductory lecture and we will discuss how to create a website using Orchard without writing code. The 2nd part, “customizing Orchard websites without limit”, is an advanced lecture and we will discuss custom theme and module development with WebMatrix and Visual Studio.

• Oracle Open World 2012 is Here!

  Just a quick post today and then probably not much more until next week. Speaking, running hands on labs, meets and greets, and trying to keep up with folks like @oraclenerd means I won’t have much time to write until I get home from San Francisco. Wanted to give a quick shout out to my co-worker and partner-in-Product Management-crime, Ashley Chen this morning. She signed me up for a run across the Golden Gate and back with @bamcgill a few months ago…mostly with my permission. The only thing was, I didn’t run at the time, and that’s basically a 5k. But having goals is good. And yesterday I met a big goal of mine – not looking stupid trying to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. Ok, I did the run and mabye looked a little bit stupid. Ashley, Barry, and I Pre-Run Perfect weather and no fog to cloud the view! So the pre-show fun is over and now it’s time for the show fun to begin. At Oracle Open World? Come by our demo pods. • Silverlight chart with behavior/bitmap image tooltip passthrough

  I have a chart showing bound data as tooltips and it works well. I have added a magnifier(set of behaviors class) that captures a bitmap image at two times scale that shows in a circular area over the hover spot. The tooltip does not display. I have tried a custom tooltip service but cannot bind it to the behaviors. I added the tooltip to the behavior class and got a tooltip and data but could not move it with the magnifier. It just sits in the middle and laughs. I added a usercontrol "tooltip"-same issues, could not hook it to the magnifier behavior. I know I can probably build a popup, but really wanted to just pass through the bitmap layer with the tootip. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Danny

• Basecamp API Rails

  Hi Everyone, I was wondering if someone could do me massive favour.. I really don't understand how to make use of API's - so I was wondering if, using Basecamp as an example, someone could talk me though the basics. So far I have an application with a dashboard controller/view, I have put basecamp.rb into my /lib directory, added the following to my application_controller: def basecamp_connect Basecamp.establish_connection!('XXXXXX.basecamphq.com', 'USER', 'PASS', false) @basecamp = Basecamp.new end Obviously changing the required parts to my credentials. Next up I have added the following to my dashboard_controller: def index Basecamp::TodoList.find(:all) end Next I presume I have to somehow list the Todo's on the dashboard using some sort of loop. Am I doing the right thing, if so - how on earth do I display all the todo items and if not - what am I doing wrong/missing. It doesn't have to be todo's, anything from basecamp or any other popular API service would be a good start. It's just that I happen to have a basecamp account! Thanks, Danny

• How to get bash to insert ' in the output

  Hi everybody, I'm rather new to bash, and somehow just haven't found out what I'm doing wrong here: (this is a small bash script calling my generator) if [ -n $folder ]; then $zorbalocation -q $generator -f -e files=\"$lFiles\" -e folder=\"lFolder\" else $zorbalocation -q $generator -f -e files=\"$lFiles\" -e folder=\".\" fi Now, obviously I want bash to execute these commands, depending on the content of folder. But, for some reason, bash insists on putting apostrophes ( ' ) around files=... and folder =... So, it tries to execute ../../../zorba/build/bin/zorba -q generator.xq -f -e 'files="test.xqlib"' -e 'folder="."' instead of ../../../zorba/build/bin/zorba -q generator.xq -f -e files="test.xqlib" -e folder="." Does anybody know why bash insists on inserting the apostrophes there? A nice day to everyone Danny

• Make a div fall off the page

  Hey, So I have been playing with jQuery for a good time now and I'm trying to get an effect to work properly. I have a main square div in the middle of the page and when someone clicks a link I want the box to look like its falling off the page and disappear, revealing a new page behind it. I'v been playing with the easing plugin but I can seem to get what I want to work. Basically I have the div's top margin or just top distance increased to a large number. However, this just makes the div fall but it also expands my page and its just much lower on the page. I basically want the div to fall out of site and not change the dimensions of the site. Anyone know how to do that? Thanks! Danny

  Hey Guys, Long time reader never posted until now. Im having some trouble with Android, im implementing a library called JJIL its an open source imaging library. My problem is this i need to run some analysis on an image and to do so i need to have it in jjil.core.image format and once those processes are complete i need to convert the changed image from jjil.core.image to java.awt.image. I cant seem to find a method of doing this does anyone have any ideas or have any experience with this? I would be grateful of any help. Danny

My problem is this i need to run some analysis on an image and to do so i need to have it in jjil.core.image format and once those processes are complete i need to convert the changed image from jjil.core.image to java.awt.image. • Why are nanosleep() and usleep() too slow?

  I have a program that generates packets to send to a receiver. I need an efficient method of introducing a small delay between the sending of each packet so as not to overrun the receiver. I've tried usleep() and nanosleep() but they seem to be too slow. I've implemented a busy wait loop and had more success, but it's not the most efficient method, I know. I'm interested in anyone's experiences in trying to do what I'm doing. Do others find usleep() and nanosleep() to function well for this type of application? Thanks, Danny Llewallyn

• How does Windows 7 taskbar "color hot-tracking" feature calculate the colour to use?

  This has intrigued me for quite some time. Does anyone know the algorithm Windows 7 Aero uses to determine the colour to use as the hot-tracking hover highlight on taskbar buttons for currently-running apps? It is definitely based on the icon of the app, but I can't see a specific pattern of where it's getting the colour value from. It doesn't seem to be any of the following: An average colour value from the entire icon, otherwise you would get brown all the time with multi-coloured icons like Chrome. The colour used the most in the image, otherwise you'd get yellow for the SQL Server Management Studio icon (6th from left). Also, the Chrome icon used red, green and yellow in equal measure. A colour located at certain pixel coordinates within the icon, because Chrome is red -indicating the top of the icon - and Notepad++ (2nd from right) is green - indicating the bottom of the icon. I asked this question on ux.stackoverflow.com and it got closed as off-topic, but someone answered with the following: As described by Raymond Chen in this MSDN blog article: Some people ask how it's done. It's really nothing special. The code just looks for the predominant color in the icon. (And, since visual designers are sticklers for this sort of thing, black, white, and shades of gray are not considered "colors" for the purpose of this calculation.) However I wasn't really satisfied with that answer because it doesn't explain how the "predominant" colour is calculated. Surely on the SQL Management Studio icon, the predominant colour, to my eyes at least, is yellow. Yet the highlight is green. I want to know, specifically, what the algorithm is.

  Windows has a setting to turn off the write-cache buffer (see image) Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device To prevent data loss, do not select this check box unless the device has a separate power supply that allows the device to flush its buffer in case of power failure. Is it feasible and economical to get such a "separate power supply" for the internal sata drives of a non-server PC? Under what name is such a power supply sold? I know that there are UPS devices that can be connected to external drives,but what is required to be able to switch this setting safely on for an internal disk? The setting has different descriptions in different version of windows Windows XP: Enable write caching on the disk This setting enables write caching in Windows to improve disk performance, but a power outage or equipment failure might result in data loss or corruption. Windows Server 2003: Enable write caching on the disk Recommended only for disks with a backup power supply. This setting further improves disk performance, but it also increases the risk of data loss if the disk loses power. Windows Vista: Enable advanced performance Recommended only for disks with a backup power supply. This setting further improves disk performance, but it also increases the risk of data loss if the disk loses power. Windows 7 and 8: Turn off Windows write-cache buffer flushing on the device To prevent data loss, do not select this check box unless the device has a separate power supply that allows the device to flush its buffer in case of power failure. • ANSI or OEM Codepage when using MME and DirectMusic?

  Hello, I noticed that when reading MIDI port names from MME, the names are multi-byte strings encoded using the ANSI Codepage, which my app uses by default. When receiving those names from the DirectMusic driver, the names are wide-character strings encoded with the OEM Codepage. See this article by Raymond Chen for a quick refresher on Codepages. On my German system, this means that when using the current codepage, which turns out to be the ANSI one, I get "Audiogerät" from MME, and "Audiogeröt" from DirectMusic, the latter being wrong. This gets fixed when I treat that last name as OEM-encoded instead. So how do I know with which codepage to decode those names? Why does the name coming from DirectMusic get encoded differently? Does it come from the USB driver? The COM framework? DirectMusic? How can I know for sure which codepage to use when reading the names of my MIDI ports? For info: I use the MultiByteToWideChar() and WideCharToMultiByte() functions to perform the conversions, with CP_ACP and CP_OEMCP as argument for the codepage to use. I use midiInGetDeviceCaps() to get MIDI port information from the MME subsystem... ... and convert MIDIINCAPS.szPname using the CP_ACP (ANSI) codepage. I use IID_IDirectMusic8::EnumPort() to get port information from DirectMusic... ... and convert DMUS_PORTCAPS.wszDescription using the CP_OEMCP codepage.

• Postfix log.... spam attempt?

  I have some weird entries in my mail.log. What I'd like to ask is if postfix is avoiding correctly (according with the main.cf attached below) what seems to be relay attempts, presumably for spamming, or if I can enhance it's security somehow. • Selenium and Firefox 9's "Will you help improve Mozilla Firefox" popup

  I'm trying to test a Java web app using Selenium 2.16.1. When Selenium opens Firefox, I see a band at the top of the page with message "Will you help improve Mozilla Firefox" For some reason this breaks selenium.click("id=submit"); selenium.waitForPageToLoad("60000"); which is trying to log in - it becomes a no-op, and the test fails because it's then expecting to have logged in. If I break on the click line and clear the 'will you help' band before continuing then the form submit succeeds. Is there a way to suppress this band from appearing? (I expect that would mean setting a property in Firefox's default profile - where do I find that?) Or is there a way to get Selenium to spot and dismiss this first? Thanks! I'm using Firefox 9.0.1. Solved - thanks Danny! Just in case it isn't clear from the answers and comments below: This was an issue with 2.16.1 and IMO the best solution is to upgrade to 2.17 or later.

• Rails and Prawn PDF - add current item ID to filename?

  Hi Everyone, I have two PDFs that are made "on the fly" using Prawn PDF.   Hi Everyone, I have a model called Kase each "Case" is assigned to a contact person via the following code: class Kase < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :jobno has_many :notes, :order => "created_at DESC" belongs_to :company # foreign key: company_id belongs_to :person # foreign key in join table belongs_to :surveyor, :class_name => "Company", :foreign_key => "appointedsurveyor_id" belongs_to :surveyorperson, :class_name => "Person", :foreign_key => "surveyorperson_id" I was wondering if it is possible to list on the contacts page all of the kases that that person is associated with. I assume I need to use the find command within the Person model? Maybe something like the following? def index @kases = Person.Kase.find(:person_id) or am I completely misunderstanding everything again? • Rails and GIT workflow advice.

  Hi Everyone, I need some advice with my desired setup with git and rails. Basically for my first Rails application I used a base application template from GitHub, I then made a ton of changes and now have a full application which is fairly customised. I have now extracted all of the changes I made to the files within the base application template and have committed the changes to my fork of the github repo. Ideally, I would like to have the base application template as a branch in my application and rebase it with my master. Is this actually possible? The reason I want to do this: I want to keep the base application up to date and functional, so for my next project I can just clone the base application template from my github fork and get working. Likewise, if anyone fixes any bugs in the base application template, I could merge those fixes with any application I have the base application template as a branch? Is this possible?
