  • How do people know so much about programming?

    I see people in this forums with a lot of points, so I assume they know about a lot of different programming stuff. When I was young I knew about basic (commodore) and the turbo pascal (pc). Then in college I learnt about C, memory management, x86 set, loop invariants, graphs, db query optimization, oop, functional, lambda calculus, prolog, concurrency, polymorphism, newton method, simplex, backtracking, dynamic programming, heuristics, np completeness, LR, LALR, neural networks, static & dynamic typing, turing, godel, and more in between. Then in industry I started with Java several years ago and learnt about it, and its variety of frameworks, and also design patterns, architecture patterns, web development, server development, mobile development, tdd, bdd, uml, use cases, bug trackers, process management, people management if you are a tech lead, profiling, security concerns, etc. I started to forget what I learnt in college... And then there is the stuff I don't know yet, like python, .net, perl, JVM stuff like groovy or scala.. Of course Google is a must for rapid documentation access to know if a problem has been solved already and how, and to keep informed about new stuff by blogs and places like this one. It's just too much or I just have a bad memory.. how do you guys manage it?

  • Simple jQuery syntax help, don't know where I've gone wrong

    I'm having trouble with a jQuery code at the moment, I know WHERE the problem lies, but I don't know what the problem is exactly. Probably very basic, but I'm new to this. You can see a (non)working fiddle here: http://www.jsfiddle.net/CvZeQ/ Basically I want to set different .click function based on whatever is selected (I have 5 image maps, each with a different #mapname, and want each to pertain to a different variable (answer1, answer2, answer3...) so as to store the selected 'answer' for each map.)   • Qt vs .NET - plz no n00bs who don't know wtf they're talking about [closed]

    Man in all these Qt vs. .NET discussions 90% these people don't know WTF they're talking about. Trying to get a real comparison chart going before we embark on a major fucking project. And yes I'm drunk, and yes I use cocaine. Event Handling In Qt the event handling system you just emit signals when something cool happens and then catch them in slots, for instance emit valueChanged(int percent, bool something); and void MyCatcherObj::valueChanged(int p, bool ok){} blocking them and disconnecting them when needed, doing it across threads... once you get the hang of it, it just seems a lot more natural and intuitive than the way the .NET event handling is set up (you know, object sender, CustomEventArgs e). And I'm not just talking about syntax, because in the end the .NET delegate crap is the bomb. I'm also talking about in more than just reflection (because, yes, .NET obviously has much stronger reflection capabilities). I'm talking about in the way the system feels to a human being. Qt wins hands down i m o. Basically, the footprints make more sense and you can visualize the project easier without the clunky event handling system. I wish I could it explain it better. The only thing is, I do love some of the ease of C# compared to C++ and .NET's assembly architecture. That is a big bonus for modular projects, which are a PITA to do in C++. Database Ease of Doing Crap Also what about datasets and database manipulations. I think .net wins here but I'm not sure. Threading/Conccurency How do you guys think of the threading? In .NET, all I've ever done is make like a list of master worker threads with locks. I like QConcurrentFramework, you don't worry about locks or anything, and with the ease of the signal slot system across threads it's nice to get notified about the progress of things. Memory Usage Also what do you think of the overall memory usage comparison. Is the .NET garbage collector pretty on the ball and quick compared to the instantaneous nature of native memory management? Or does it just let programs leak up a storm and lag the computer then clean it up when it's about to really lag? However, I am a n00b who doesn't know what I'm talking about, please school me on the subject.

    We have an application running locally which two days worked fine and now we get the: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor error. I've tested the connection using TNSPing which resolved correctly and Tried SQLPlus to try connecting, which failed with the same error. (i.e. Sqlplus username/passowrd@addressname[or host name] The TNS Listener on the server is running. Oracle itself on the server is running. We don't know of any changes that were made to this environment. Anything else we can test to figure this one out? Thanks, Jacques

  • Should developers know how to use office suites?

    How deep is your knowledge on Office suites? Personally i don't like them, i hate create and manage word documents, excel datasheets etc. etc. I'm not talking about opening a word document and write some text or calculate sum and division on excel; i'm talking about advanced features like revisions, vba macros and so on. I have a co-worker, actually he's a talented functional analyst, that don't know anything about programming but he's kind a monster guru on Microsoft Office suite. When he sits on my desk and asks me to open and modify some of his hardly complicated Microsoft Excel multicolor multipivotal recursive datasheet, ehm, i feel like a baby in front of a nuclear plant console.It' not a great feeling if you know what i mean. As programmer, do you feel guilty about not knowing office suites enough?

    Hi, This question occured to me while programming a Android application, but it seems to be a general programming question more. The situation is, I am extending (subclass-ing) an class from a library, and overriding a method. how do I know if I should invoke the method of super-class? and when? (in the beginning of the overridden method or in the end?) For example, I am overriding the method "public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu)" from class "Activity" in Android platform. And I saw someone write "return super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)" in the end of the method, in an example. But how do I know it should be done this way? and it is correct or not? what's the difference if I begin my method with "super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu)"? BR, Henry

Suggestions?

I mean, i have a function that requires only native objects as arguments, for every other type of variable it throws an error.   • Do you know a good and efficient FFT?

    Hi, I am trying to find a very fast and efficient Fourier transform (FFT). Does anyone know of any good ones. I need to run it on the iPhone so it must not be intensive. Instead, maybe you know of one that is wavelet like, i need frequency resolution but only a narrow band (vocal audio range up to 10khz max...even 10Khz might be too high). Im thinking also of truncating this FFT to keep the frequency resolution while eliminating the unwanted frequency band. This is for an iphone ...I have taken a look at the FFT in Aurio touch but it seems this is an int FFT but my app uses floats.....would it give a big performance increase to try and adapt program to an int FFT or not(which i really dont feel like doing...plus aurio touch uses a radix 2 FFT which is not that great).

    I've written the below makefile: hw2p1: hw2p1_main.o hw2p1_getit.o hw2p1_parseit.o hw2p1_moveit.o hw2p1_showit.o gcc hw2p1_main.o hw2p1_getit.o hw2p1_parseit.o hw2p1_moveit.o hw2p1_showit.o hw2p1_main.o: hw2p1_main.c gcc -c hw2p1_main.c hw2p1_getit.o: hw2p1_getit.c gcc -c hw2p1_getit.c hw2p1_parseit.o: hw2p1_parseit.c gcc -c hw2p1_parseit.c hw2p1_moveit.o: hw2p1_moveit.c gcc -c hw2p1_moveit.c hw2p1_showit.o: hw2p1_showit.c gcc -c hw2p1_showit.c The first time I tried to call make, I got the error: "make: Fatal error: unexpected end of line seen" I deleted the blank lines between targets and called make again, but this time I got " 'ake: Fatal error: Don't know how to make hw2p1_main.c" I've compiled all of these files separately and then linked them so I know that the errors are a result of an incorrect makefile and not a result of errors in my c files. This is the first makefile that I've ever written so I might just be doing it completely incorrectly. Either way, any suggestions on how to get rid of these errors?

So below is my list of code sharing sites, there is 4 on the list and they all have unique features. Some have syntax highlighting for multiple languages, some allow you to save your code as private and only share with the people you give the link to, and some even run the run and output any possible errors.     I've seen this in a webcast somewhere, but I can't remember where, and all searching terms I'm trying are coming up unhelpful. I've got a stylesheet for my site, and it's referenced in a master page. Child pages that use this master page use these styles, but .Net doesn't know about them. When the site is run, it all works great, but I'm trying to figure out how to get .Net to know about them at design time. This should also fix the issue with not knowing about the javascript files I'm including, too -- I think it's all related and I can't for the life of me figure out how.

Of course I can parse the output of git status but this is not recommended since this human readable output is liable to change. There are two problems: How to know the remote tracked branch? It is often origin/branch but need not be. How to get the numbers? How to know whether it is ahead/behind? By how many commits? And what about the diverged branch case?

  • Getting the height of text to know fill height as in TCPDF

    I'm trying to go through the code of TCPDF to understand how it calculates the height of the text to be rendered, but it's too much for me to handle without asking. What I want to know: in the PDF from example 5 http://www.tcpdf.org/examples/example_005.pdf it gives the cell a yellow background. I'm guessing that at the basic level, it first draws a box with this fill color, then adds the text, so what method is it calling to get the height of the text to know the height of the box to fill? Anyone knows how to trace this, because doing it by hand and looking through the code isn't working at all for me.

    Hello all, I have three weeks to perform the following basic task. I wish to create an online form in PHP that will get 5 numbers and with them: save the numbers to a MySQL DB do a simple computation on the numbers and return them as an output to the visitor I already have a domain, hosting and a MySQL database+user. I don't know PHP, or SQL or databases. I do have prior knowledge in C and R (which means I have some of the basics of programming, and I am not intimidated of a new languages). My question are: Am I missing something? is there some other skill I should have for this task that I don't know of? What is a good way to learn the skills needed for the task I described? I can add all the new files in my working copy before do commit, and the repository changes, but if for example i delete one file of the working copy i dont know the way to add this change before do commit. When you use the tortoise for example before do commit the program shows all the changes of the working copy and you can choose what changes commit and what changes dont. There is some way to do this usin sharp svn?? thanks for your answer!!!
