• USB printer doesn't finish in 12.04

  I have an HP Deskjet 720C connected through a USB cable to an Ubuntu 12.04 laptop. When I plugged the printer for the first time into the fresh 12.04 laptop install, it auto-detected the printer correctly and choose the recommended drivers without a problem. The document print fine until they reach the end of the page, then suddenly stop just about the end leaving the page unfinished. I have checked that the margins are the correct ones. I have the latest version of cups installed. I have also tried changing the options of usb-unidir-default and usb-no-reattach-default via lpadmin, but the printing stops even earlier. Any ideas?

• How to use AD/GPO/Print Services to "push out" a new printer driver to replace a broken one? How did my server get a broken driver?

  Context: We have an AD/GPO-managed corporate network with a little over a hundred PCs running Windows 7 x64, and a few managed printers. Our Server2008R2 primary domain controller is configured as a print server for them all. Problem: After a recent windows update and restart (no printer driver updates were included) on the DC, a particular shared printer (Lexmark T650) has begin exhibiting some strange behavior. First, it prints a preceding and following blank page for almost every document, on jobs submitted by about half of client machines (no separator page is configured on the server or any of the clients I've seen). Second, whenever someone tries to access "Printing Preferences" on any client, they recieve the following error message (this happens everywhere, 100% of the time, and didn't happen before the update on the DC): Once they click "OK", the prefs screen appears (with no separator page selected) and everything seems fine. I'm not even sure if these two issues are related, but everyone seems affected by one or both of those issues. What I've Tried: I've been hesitant to un-deploy the problem printer, or remove it via GPO, as it's pretty heavily used. I've tried updating (via MS update and our internal WSUS server) client machines and the DC. No printer driver updates have appeared, and no number of updates or restarts on the server or the client seems to have achieved anything other than my boss getting grumpy that I'm bouncing the domain controller so often. I've tried deleting the drivers on the server, and re-installing them from the original source that has worked for the past year...no change. I've tried selecting "New Driver" for one of the shared printers on a client machine, running as domain admin, and pushed the latest driver found by MSupdate back up to the DC. This changed the version number of the driver recorded in the print server manager, but caused no change--on the client I pushed from, or on any other. The error still appears. Question: Why the heck is this happening? Obviously, I got a bad driver from somewhere, but how do I get rid of it? I don't know of any "roll back drivers" functionality for centrally managed print drivers like Windows offers for other devices. How would I a) get this issue resolved on a client, and b) push the fix to the other members of the domain?

  I have a Windows 2008 R2 server with Terminal server role installed. I'm seeing a problem with an ordinary user who is member of local printer operators group on the server. If the user opens a cmd window using ‘run as administrator’ they can run printmanager.msc without needing to enter their password again. In printmanager they can change the ownership of redirected (easy print) printers without problems. If, from the same cmd window, they use subinacl to try and change the onwership of the queue to themselves they get access denied: >subinacl.exe /printer "_#MyPrinter (2 redirected)" /setowner="MyDom\MyUsr" Elapsed Time: 00 00:00:00 Done: 1, Modified 0, Failed 1, Syntax errors 0 Last Done : _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) Last Failed: _#MyPrinter (2 redirected) - OpenPrinter Error : 5 Access denied so, same context, same action but one works and one doesn't. Any ideas for this odd behaviour? I'm using subinacl x86 on an x64 server as I can't find anything more up to date. I've tried with icacls and others but couldn't get them to do anything with printers. EDIT: added after Gregs comments regarding setacl below If I log into the TS server as Testusr and open Admin Tools Printer Admin (as administrator) and then type mydomain\testusr and the testusr's password, then I can change the ownership of the printer queue and set testusr as the owner. However if I open cmd as administrator and, again, type mydomain\testusr and the users password when I try to change the ownership of my redirected printer I get the following: C:\>setacl -on "Bullzip PDF Printer (12 redireccionado)" -ot prn -actn setowner -ownr n:mydom\testusr WARNING: Privilege 'Back up files and directories' could not be enabled. • How do I send a PDF in a MemoryStream to the printer in .Net?

  I have a PDF created in memory using iTextSharp and contained in a MemoryStream. I now need to translate that MemoryStream PDF into something the printer understands. I've used Report Server in the past to render the pages to the printer format but I cant use it for this project. Is there a native .Net way of doing this? For example, GhostScript would be OK if it was a .Net assembly but I don't want to bundle any non .Net stuff along with my installer. The PrintDocument class in .Net is great for sending content to the printer but I still need to translate it from a PDF stream into GDI at the page level. Any good hints? Thanks in advance Ryan

• Can I send a ESC d command to a POS printer from perl?

  I have a Star TSP100 printer and I'm having few problems with it really. My problem is that I'm not as familiar with programming as I should be - but I'm learning! The programmers reference for the Star printer says that if I send a ESC d to the printer - that will activate the built-in cutter - which I would like to do very much. My problem is that I have no idea how to send an escape code like that from within PERL - if it's even possible. I really appreciate any advice on this one.

The problem is that I can't tell which one is a good one to buy from. How can I tell if the store has a good reputation. I don't want to pay, and then not receive the item. This has happened to me before (IvySkin). Or get conned some other way. One place I found is printerinkcartridge.us. But again, I can't find any independent information from people that they have successfully ordered products from there, and that they received what they expected.   You know how everytime you go to a photocopying shop, photocopiers always have a neat zoom function (it can take whatever you give it, and zoom it in/out, so your copy comes out smaller or larger). I got one of those neat 3-in-one printer machines. It has a copy button on it, but it also has some software that comes with it (Epson SX115 to be exact is the model). Apart from going into some photo manipulation application, is there some way (software) to give it that feature. So, in short, I need something that can scan a page, scale it to let's say, a quarter of its size, and then print it out ? Anyone knows of anything like that ?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

It appears (through looking at the samples that came with the WS WSDL) that if the stub is generated in .NET, this header information is exposed through a member variable in the stub class. However, when I generate my Axis2 java stub using WSDL2Java it doesn't appear to be exposed anywhere. What is the correct way to extract this information from the SOAP envelope header? • Can't set up printing from Mac OS X (10.5.7) to an HP PSC 2410 shared from PC running Ubuntu 9.10

  I've got an HP PSC 2410 printer shared from a fresh Ubuntu 9.10 installation. I'm able to send documents to this printer over the network from another Ubuntu machine. But so far, I haven't been able to find a setup where I can send documents to that printer from a MacBook running 10.5.7. On the Mac side, when setting things up, I go into System Prefs Print & Fax, click on the "+" mark, select "IP", pick "IPP", enter the IP address of the Ubuntu box, leave the queue blank, enter the Name and location, and I think it's when I get to the "Print Using" (driver selection) part that I'm running into issues. If I use "Auto Select", it defaults to "Generic PostScript Printer", which I doubt the PSC 2410 is (and sure enough, if I print, the jobs don't go through). If I try "Select a driver to use...", there's not an option for an HP PSC 2400. This seems a little odd: I can plug the printer directly into one of our Macs and it immediately figures out the driver and I can print no problem, but that's apparently the way things work. So, that leaves one option: "Other", which, when selected, brings up a dialog apparently for the purpose of manually locating a driver. I've tried visiting HP's web site. They have drivers for earlier versions of Mac OS X, but state that after 10.4, Mac OS X should just come with the relevant drivers. I've also tried setting things up by interacting with the CUPS server on the Mac through a browser: I go to http://localhost:631/, select "Add New Printer", pick "Internet Printing Protocol (http)" for the Device selection, enter "http://ubuntu.machine.ip.address:631/printers/hp-psc-2400-series" for the Device URI, select "HP" for Make, and then on the next screen, we're back to the problem where the PSC 2400 just doesn't show up. There's an option to "provide a PPD file", which I assume would be the printer driver I can't find. A Google search for "HP PSC 2410 ppd Leopard" doesn't seem to yield much other than a reminder that the printer is supposed to just work out of the box on Leopard. A local search for ".ppd" or "2410" on either Mac also doesn't yield anything that looks like a relevant print driver. I'm totally stuck at this point. Any advice?

Later I had reason to uninstall and re-install the printer but whenever I connect the printer Windows installs the printer drivers from its cache without the CD. How can I remove all traces of the drivers from the cache so that it will install only from the CD and not from the Windows driver cache?

• How do I get a network printer installed in ubuntu 9.04?

  My girlfriend's work computer now has Linux on one of the partitions, and for the most part it's running fine--except that I can't seem to get the network printers configured right. There are two of them: a Lanier MP 7500/LD275 and a Lanier MP C3000/LD430c, and Linux seems to have found them both automatically. I'll go through the steps of what I did, and what exactly went wrong. I went to Administration Printing, and clicked the new printer button. It searched for printers and found them both, listed under "Network Printers." I added them as new printers in succession. However, when I clicked "Print a Test Page," it failed saying there was a broken pipe. The device URIs were saved as socket://[ip address]:9100. I changed these to lpd://[ip address] per some online tutorial, which at first looked like it might have worked (but didn't). Then when I tried to print a test page, it first said Processing (and sometimes even Processing - printing test page, 4%, but always subsequently displays Idle - /usr/lib/cups/backend/lpd failed. Help! What do I do? It seems like Linux can find these printers just fine, and the drivers seem to be in place, so what's going wrong?

• Recommendation for a simple no-frills Windows PDF printer driver?

  I'm looking for an extremely simple Windows PDF printer driver that I can recommend to clients. Ideally it would have these characteristics: When you print something, it should just create it as a temporary file and then display it in their default PDF viewer with no prompting. If they want to save it, they can save it manually from inside the viewer. This workflow should be with no special post-install configuration. Installation should be very simple. A double click the installation program and click "Finish" sort of thing. No complicated multi-step installation, no asking questions your grandmother wouldn't know the answer to (preferably no questions at all), no extra crap being installed. An option for a completely silent installation would be nice, but not necessary. Ideally it would be free to simplify their installing on a small network, but low cost is an option. I've tried a quite a few but none really fit the bill. Some can achieve the first goal but only after careful configuration, some try to install extra toolbars, some have other installation complexities that would make it hard for extremely novice users to succeed. Any suggestions? Thanks!

• Canon MX870 printer only shows "Processing" on the status LCD

  I had my Canon MX870 installed perfectly fine in 11.10, but since upgrading to 12.04, it no longer works. The printer is recognized in print settings and when I attempt to print a test page, the printer LCD displays a "Processing" message, but then it disappears and nothing happens. • Capture SOAP Envelope (C# WinForm calling .ASMX external vendor service)

  I'm calling a third-party vendor's external SSL web service from a .NET 3.5 client (WinForm). The vendor has asked me to send them the Soap Header to verify why things aren't working. I used WireShark to capture packets, but since the web service is SSL, the packets are encrypted. Is there a few magic lines of code to add to my C# client to save or display the Soap Envelope either right before I call their web/method or right after?

  I have a brand new epson aculaser c1700 and i'd like to have it working fine on ubuntu 12.04. so i did my homework, kind of, no printer driver comes for this printer in cups ... so i asked epson support who drove me to avasys who no longer handle support since december 2011. This the question that is still in my mind : as this printer comes with an osx driver which uses cups as printer server, how come no driver can be found for cups? I tried to get ppd and filters from osx driver and use them to install the printer on ubuntu but no answer from printer and none printed sheet i have .... i'm so disappointed i could cry ... I'd like to work with someone to get this working fine, please help me!

  How can I determine if printer is connected? Typically this application prints to the default printer but in some cases that printer may not be available. If so I don't want the job sent to it's queue but rather printed to another available printer. I understand the PinterSettings.InstalledPrinters property. Does PrintDocument.PrinterSettings.IsValid return false if a printer is not available? Does WPF provide this kind of functionality? My problem is different than Printing problem in C# windows app - Always prints to default printer

I run the CUPS web interface at: http://localhost:631/ and it recognizes it on USB port and even suggests Gutenprint driver from the list. When I try to print a test page, the printer goes through "warming up" process (i.e. lights blink and sound is heard) but does not print anything. There are no errors in /var/log/cups/error_log and access_log shows as if everything is ok. The printer works fine in Windows XP. Does anyone have any experience with this printer on Linux?

• I have a wireless Canon P560 and my computer can't find it

  The printer is wireless and I haven't connected it via USB. I set the configurations for the Wi-Fi access point in the printer and it connected to my Wi-Fi. I have AT&T as the service provider and the 2Wire router. When I access the router in the browser I see that the printer is connected but when I run the software to detect the printer the computer can't find it. I have a Mac with Snow Leopard. I tried to detect the printer with another device and it can't find it. Is there a port that needs to be open for wireless printers? Because I tried putting the routers firewall settings for the device to its lowest and the computer still can't find it. Let me know. Thnx.

• Some printers are merged into control panel on Windows 7

  I install the same printer several times to allow easy selection for users. They just choose the desired printer to have the corresponding functionnality (instead of going to printer properties and change them back and forth): one with double-sided printing, one for draft quality, one for upper tray, etc. On Windows 7, when I install a printer several times, the control panel's printers icons are merged. I then have only one icon for two or three identical printers. I can right-clic on the icon to display the usual menu, and some items of the menu have an arrow to access each printer. This is very missleading for users and admins. I have this behaviour on some computers, when others don't exhibit this. I didn't found what is the difference between computers with and without the problem. Anyone know how to prevent this ?
