• Ubuntu 13.04 boot into black screen, even after installing nvidia drivers, fail at: "Starting Reload cups, upon starting avahi-daemon..."

  I got a new machine with i7 4770k and gefore gtx660. I installed windows and then installed Ubuntu 13.04. In the installation everything went well, after the installation I again boot from the USB and choose try ubuntu, and installed boot-repair because windows automatically boot with no option for ubuntu. After I repaired the boot, I restarted and got into grub, when I chose Ubuntu I got message saying I'm running on low graphics mode and when I pressed ok the screen turned off. I couldn't do anything so I restarted and after reading this post: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? I got into recovery, selected dpkg and repaired packages. Then I rebooted, and tried to press 'e' and change quiet splash to no splash and nomodeset but unfortunately both of them didn't work, and not the screen didn't get turned off, but I just saw a blank screen. So I rebooted again, entered the recovery, and this time I went to the root shell, and tried to install nvidia drivers from this guide here: http://www.howopensource.com/2012/10/install-nvidia-geforce-driver-in-ubuntu-12-10-12-04-using-ppa/ I rebooted and got the same black screen again (the screen didn't go off, just saw a blank screen). In the grub I see that the kernel is 3.8.0-25. I also checked that the usb files are not corrupted using the check CD from the ubuntu installation screen. I'm really frustrated, I don't know what else can I do. (If someone also knows how can I connect to wifi using the root shell it will be very appreciated, because when I choose the 'enable networking' it again booting me to a black screen. • Why do partially failed/failing switches fail to pass DHCP?

  I've noticed this several times: a switch starts to behave oddly. Usually if the switch doesn't fail outright, what tends to get noticed is that DHCP doesn't work. We had a Linksys SRW-224P fail today. Systems which were still connected worked properly, until it came time to renew their DHCP lease. Once the lease expired, they stopped working, but up until then we couldn't detect a failure. This includes PoE VoIP phones -- they work fine until their lease is up, at which point they're done. I've noticed this on the above-mentioned Linksys, three varieties of 3Com, and possibly half a dozen dumb switches. What is it about DHCP that makes it sensitive to failing switches?

• How to casue a CppUnit test to fail - from C?

  I'd like to have an equivalent to CPPUNIT_ASSERT, CPPUNIT_ASSERT_MESSAGE or `CPPUNIT_FAIL' which I can call from some common C code. Our code is a mix of C and C++. Some older apps and those with specific requirements are coded in C and most, especially newer, are coded in C++. However, a lot of project-agnostic, common code, such as memory buffer pools, debug tracing, etc are coded in C. When testing a C++ app in CppUnit, I'd to be able to sprinkle some ASSSERT()s which would cause any running CppUnit test to fail. Maye something like: if testing if running in debugger (Eclipse) then asm("int3"); // stop the debugger, even if no breakpoint at this line else if running CppUnit test - fail the test and move on to next else trace to log file Most of that can be run by wrapping a macro around a few #ifdefs, but I am not sure how I would cause a CppUni test to fail from C code. Can it be done?

  I just wrote about how I like to present on unfamiliar topics. With this said, Domain-Driven Design (DDD) is no exception. This is yet another area I knew enough about to be dangerous but I certainly was no expert.  As it turns out, researching this topic wasn’t easy. I could be wrong, but it is as if DDD is a secret to which few are privy.   I have followed various recommendations from the Ubuntu Documentation to create a bootable Ubuntu USB flash drive using the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC. But the integrity test of the USB stick has failed and I do not see why. These are the steps I have made: Download of the 12.04.1 Alternate install ISO-file for 64-bit PC (ubuntu-12.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso) from http://releases.ubuntu.com/12.04.1/, as well as the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files and related PGP signatures Verification of the data integrity of the ISO-file using the MD5, SHA-1 and SHA-256 hash files, after having verified the hash files using the related PGP signature files (see e.g. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToSHA256SUM and https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VerifyIsoHowto) Creation of a bootable USB stick using Ubuntu's Startup Disk Creator program (see http://www.ubuntu.com/download/help/create-a-usb-stick-on-ubuntu) Boot of my computer using the newly made 12.04.1 Alternate install on USB stick Selection of the option "Check disc for defects" (see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck) Steps 1, 2, 3 and 4 went without any problem or error messages. However, step 5 ended with an error message entitled "Integrity test failed" and with the following content: The ./install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/pxelinux.cfg/default file failed the MD5 checksum verification. Your CD-ROM or this file may have been corrupted. I have experienced the same (might only be similar since I have no exact notes) error message in previous attempts using the 12.04 (i.e. not the maintenance release) Alternate install ISO-file. I have in these cases tried to install anyway and have so far not experienced any problems to my knowledge. Is failed integrity check described above a serious error? What is the solution? Or can it be ignored without further problems?

• Why does installing gnome shell extensions from extensions.gnome.org fail silently?

  On a fresh Ubuntu install (12.04, 64-bit), after installing gnome-shell, I've tried to install some extensions from extensions.gnome.org but got no result. I've tried with Firefox and Chromium and got the same issue. Open any extension page on extensions.gnome.org. Switch extension to "ON". Agree with confirmation about installation. Nothing happens and nothing has been installed (.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions is empty). I've checked .xsession-errors, Firefox's javascript console, gnome-shell console errors (Alt-F2 + looking glass). There isn't any trace of any error.

But when I run it I get "No such file". I can fix it by changing the first line of the casperjs python file from: #!/usr/bin/env python to: #!/usr/bin/python Result: $ casperjs --version 1.1.0-DEV I managed to fix it, but I'm wondering why it didn't work with #!/usr/bin/env python, since that seems to be a normal interpreter line. Do I have something configured wrong?   On resume touchpad disables and a reboot is needed to re-activate. Macbook Pro 6.1 Ubuntu 11.10 MAC 64bit Suspend - ok Suspend Resume - ok However, on resume in the loggin screen my touchpad works, but after I enter my password and return to the desktop the touchpad fails. A usb mouse still works fine. I have to re-boot in order to re-enable toe touchpad. This was not an issue when I had Ubuntu 10.10 32bit installed. The install was a fresh install. The bcm5974 driver will not install, says codependency errors. I manually try to install all dependencies and I get this error: E: hid-dkms: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10 E: bcm5974-dkms: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Thanks

When I run package --extras on a clean template it runs fine. soundboardconfig.py is an unmodified appnameconfig.py the template makes. I'm not sure if my full source code is needed for this or not, but can be provided. EDIT: Forgot to mention quickly package creates a working package, only --extras fails.

• Why does my code dividing a 2D array into chunks fail?

  I have a 2D-Array representing my world. I want to divide this huge thing into smaller chunks to make collision detection easier. I have a Chunk class that consists only of another 2D Array with a specific width and height and I want to iterate through the world, create new Chunks and add them to a list (or maybe a Map with Coordinates as the key; we'll see about that). world = new World(8192, 1024); Integer[][] chunkArray; for(int a = 0; a < map.getHeight() / Chunk.chunkHeight; a++) { for(int b = 0; b < map.getWidth() / Chunk.chunkWidth; b++) { Chunk chunk = new Chunk(); chunkArray = new Integer[Chunk.chunkWidth][Chunk.chunkHeight]; for(int x = Chunk.chunkHeight*a; x < Chunk.chunkHeight*(a+1); x++) { for(int y = Chunk.chunkWidth*b; y < Chunk.chunkWidth*(b+1); y++) { // Yes, the tileMap actually is [height][width] I'll have // to fix that somewhere down the line -.- chunkArray[y][x] = map.getTileMap()[x*a][y*b]; // TODO:Attach to chunk } } chunkList.add(chunk); } } System.out.println(chunkList.size()); The two outer loops get a new chunk in a specific row and column. I do that by dividing the overall size of the map by the chunkSize. The inner loops then fill a new chunkArray and attach it to the chunk. But somehow my maths is broken here. Let's assume the chunkHeight = chunkWidth = 64. For the first Array I want to start at [0][0] and go until [63][63]. For the next I want to start at [64][64] and go until [127][127] and so on. But I get an out of bounds exception and can't figure out why. Any help appreciated! Actually I think I know where the problem lies: chunkArray[y][x] can't work, because y goes from 0-63 just in the first iteration. Afterwards it goes from 64-127, so sure it is out of bounds. Still no nice solution though :/ EDIT: if(y < Chunk.chunkWidth && x < Chunk.chunkHeight) chunkArray[y][x] = map.getTileMap()[y][x]; This works for the first iteration... now I need to get the commonly accepted formula.

• Why does 12.04 try but fail to hibernate, even after I enabled hibernation?

  Regarding the below (-----) info from another post, my system will try (as is said below) to hibernate, but it won't get all the way there. Hard drive activity stops, but it does not shut down. If I turn the power off, then back on, it will start, but I have to "restore previous session" in the browser and other open apps don't restart, with the accompanying hassle. So because it tries, will the suggested fix then cause it to work correctly, or is the literal "try" not really what he means?!? PLEASE NOTE - this is a desktop system, not a laptop. Before enabling hibernation, please try to test whether it works correctly by running pm-hibernate in a terminal. The system will try to hibernate. If you are able to start the system again then you are more or less safe to add an override. To do so, start editing sudo nano /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla Fill it with this [Re-enable hibernate by default] Identity=unix-user:* Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate ResultActive=yes Save by pressing Ctrl-O and exit nano by pressing Ctrl-X Restart and hibernation is back!

  I've been spending the last week or so learning selenium and building a series of web tests for a website we're about to launch. it's been great to learn, and I've picked up some xpath and css location techniques. the problem for me though, is seeing little changes break the tests - any change to a div, an id, or some autoid number that helps identify widgets breaks any number of tests - it just seems to be very brittle. so have you written selenium (or other similar) tests, and how do you deal with the brittle nature of the tests (or how do you stop them being brittle), and what sort of tests do you use selenium for?

• Scripts fail when jQuery.js isn't cached. When cached, scripts run fine.

  I have jQuery UI Tabs which load their content via AJAX. About once every 15 times when the entire page is loaded (not just XHR), things fail and I don't see the proper content in the tab. Fiddler showed me that when things fail I also see that jQuery.js and jQuery-ui.js are both sent to the browser in full (~100kB). Normally, a page load results in HTTP status code 304 for both of those files, they're not re-downloaded, and the page displays properly. When the status code is 200 and fresh copies of jQuery/UI are sent, things fail. I notice this most often in IE8, but that's because I use it for web development. I have seen it in Firefox, but for some reason I can't reproduce it now. Fiddler shows that the HTTP request asks for: GET /Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js?_=1255309685187 HTTP/1.1 I can't figure out what the ?_=1255309685187 is for, but I'm guessing it's a token to indicate for how long the file should be cached. Since I can't reproduce the problem in Firefox right now, I don't know what Firebug says. Any insight would be appreciated. EDIT: This is with Visual Studio's development webserver.

• Is is good or bad to have the email address of a domain's registrant on the same domain?

  Say I own domain abc.com. I think it's a bad idea to use [email protected] as the registrant's (myself) email address. This will cause problems when I need to transfer the domain to another registrar e.g. GoDaddy. The new registrar will then try to send email to [email protected] which is unlikely to function normally since the DNS settings are undergoing changes. So I believe it's best to use email address independent from the domains I own as the registrant's email address. (Isn't it the practice Google Apps is using?) Have I missed something here or am I right?
