  • Irrelevant legend information in ggplot2

    - by Dan Goldstein
When running this code (go ahead, try it): library(ggplot2) (myDat <- data.frame(cbind(VarX=10:1, VarY=runif(10)), Descrip=sample(LETTERS[1:3], 10, replace=TRUE))) ggplot(myDat,aes(VarX,VarY,shape=Descrip,size=3)) + geom_point() ... the "size=3" statement does correctly set the point size. However it causes the legend to give birth to a little legend beneath it, entitled "3" and containing nothing but a big dot and the number 3. This does the same ggplot(myDat,aes(VarX,VarY,shape=Descrip)) + geom_point(aes(size=3)) Yes, it is funny. It would have driven me insane a couple hours ago if it weren't so funny. But now let's make it stop.

  • Which programming langauge is the funniest?

    - by Shervin
I know there are tons of different programming languages, and some of them are made with a tad of sense of humor. But which one is the funniest in your opinion? I have heard of something called Moo (although I am not sure of the exact name), which was a programming language for the JVM. The basic idea was that the only syntax allowed was a fork of Moo, like this: moo; //Means something mooo; //means another thing moooooo; //means something else and so on. That is pretty funny IMO. Not so useful, and definitely not easy to learn, but quite funny.

I've since reloaded the backup and the funny chars are still appearing. Any ideas what I need to do?? Please ask if you need more info from me about the problem in hand. Many thanks, ETFairfax.

  • Sanitize json input to a java server

    - by morgancodes
I'm using json to pass data between the browser and a java server. I'm using Json-lib to convert between java objects and json. I'd like to strip out susupicious looking stuff (i.e "doSomethingNasty().) from the user input while converting from json to java. I can imagine several points at which I could do this: I could examine the raw json string and strip out funny-looking stuff I could look for a way to intercept every json value on its way into the java object, and look for funny stuff there. I could traverse my new java objects immediately after reconstitution from json, look for any fields that are Strings, and stripp stuff out there. What's the best approach? Are there any technologies built for this this task that I tack tack on to what I have already?

  • table subtraction challenge

    - by Valentin
I have a challenge that I haven’t overcome in the last two days using Stored Procedures and SQL 2008. I took several approaches but must fell short. One appraoch very interesting was using a table substraction. It’s really all about table subtraction. I was wondering if you could help me crack this one. Here is the challenge: Two tables 1Testdb y 2Testdb. My first step was to select ID relationships ([2Testdb].Acc_id) on table 2Testdb for one given individual ([2Testdb].Bus_id). Then query table 1Testdb for records not mathcing my original selection from 2Testdb. But other approaches are welcome. Data and Structures: USE [Challengedb] GO SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[1Testdb]( [Acc_id] [uniqueidentifier] NULL [Name] [Varchar(10)] NULL ) ON [PRIMARY] GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[2Testdb]( [Acc_id] [uniqueidentifier] NULL, [Bus_id] [uniqueidentifier] NULL ) ON [PRIMARY] GO Records on 1Testdb: 34455F60-9474-4521-804E-66DB39A579F3, John C23523F6-2309-4F58-BB3F-EF7486C7AF8B, Pete DC711615-3BE4-4B31-9EF2-B1314185CA62, Dave E3AAB073-2398-476D-828B-92829F686A4C, Adam Records on 2Testdb: (Relationship table, ex. Friend relationships) Record #1: DC711615-3BE4-4B31-9EF2-B1314185CA62, 34455F60-9474-4521-804E-66DB39A579F3 Record #2: E3AAB073-2398-476D-828B-92829F686A4C, 34455F60-9474-4521-804E-66DB39A579F3 Record # 3: DC711615-3BE4-4B31-9EF2-B1314185CA62, E3AAB073-2398-476D-828B-92829F686A4C Record # 4: E3AAB073-2398-476D-828B-92829F686A4C, DC711615-3BE4-4B31-9EF2-B1314185CA62 Challenge: Select from table 1Testdb only those records distinct that may not have a relationship with John [34455F60-9474-4521-804E-66DB39A579F3] on table 2Testdb. Expected result should be (Who does John doesn’t have relationship with?): C23523F6-2309-4F58-BB3F-EF7486C7AF8B, Pete Thank you, Valentin

  • SQLAuthority News – Social Media Series – YouTube and Movies

    - by pinaldave
Pinal Dave on Youtube! Some people might not know it, but YouTube is actually more than a place to watch funny cat videos and people singing their favorite pop songs – it’s actually a social media site.  When you are a member of YouTube you can follow people who regularly post videos, post video responses of your own, and even gain a following for your own videos.  I myself was not aware of YouTube’s potential until recently, when I started to make SQL Server in Sixty Seconds videos. YouTube is very different than other types of social media, and a big factor is that anyone can look at videos without being a member.  Unlike other social media sites, like Twitter and Facebook, you have to have an account in order to participate.  But on YouTube you are even more anonymous.  To make and post videos you need an account, but anyone who comes to the site can look at what you’ve made without signing in or leaving any trace of having seen your material.  This makes YouTube very anonymous and hard to track. However, we should not overlook the power of video on the internet.  Over the past few months I have been making SQL Server in Sixty Second videos and have come to love it.  It is very exciting to be able to talk about a subject that mostly I write about, and for many people video is far more accessible and easy to understand.   I have really enjoyed diving into something new, and would love to have more people check out these videos and give me feedback.  You can find me at www.youtube.com/user/pinaldave. I am very excited with all the possibilities on YouTube and it might just be the technology evangelist in me, but I would love for other people to discover how fun and exciting this site can be, too.  Don’t think of it as just a place to find funny videos and waste a few minutes of your time, think of it as a place to learn and interact with interesting people.  Come watch a few of my videos, while you’re there.  Remember, everything is free and there are no contracts to sign, but I hope that you get as excited as I am and join up.  We need more people creating good content on this site! • How to check if a Webcam is broken?

    - by user84812
I just bought an Acer Aspire 3830TG, it comes with an integrated 1.3M HD Webcam. Before buying it i tried with a bootable Lubuntu usb stick, everything worked well except for the webcam, which i thought I had to tweak. The thing is that it seems the camera should work with no problems in ubuntu. The driver is detected, I try dmesg | grep uvcvideo and the output is [ 12.226174] uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device 1.3M HD WebCam (058f:b002) [ 12.245553] usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo I've also tried using different software (guvcview is black when camera output is MJPG and turns to funny colors when YU12 or YV12, cheese is always black, camorama is always with funny colors...). I should have checked that it was working properly with the default os (windows) but now it's too late for that. I even booted with a official Ubuntu Quantal distro from the usb pen, and the results are the same. so, my question is: is there any way to check that the camera is righmt or broken? So, if it's broken, at least i can go to the shop, show them that it's really broken and get an external webcam for free, or st like that. cheers. UPDATE 1 Thanks, jrp. I run sudo lsinput, and the output info about my video is the following: /dev/input/event6 bustype : BUS_USB vendor : 0x58f product : 0xb002 version : 2 name : "1.3M HD WebCam" phys : "usb-0000:00:1a.0-1.3/button" bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY /dev/input/event7 bustype : BUS_HOST vendor : 0x0 product : 0x6 version : 0 name : "Video Bus" phys : "LNXVIDEO/video/input0" bits ev : EV_SYN EV_KEY With this info, i'm not pretty sure about running the luvcview command. We’ve had lots of complements from lots of people and also some very positive tweets. It was great to see so many people stopping on for the social event at the end of the conference. • ubuntu i3wm freezes on login

    - by NaN
I switched to the i3 window manager, which is quite nice, but I have a funny bug. If I reboot and set the wm to i3 (within the lightdb settings) the gui freezes after logging in (i can see the light-db background image and login-form and the i3status bar at the same time, but nothing reacts). To use the system like expected I have to use unity, log out and login (with i3) again. How can I debug this bug?

  • Support material - UG Presentation "Using Indexed Views and Computed Columns for Performance"

    - by NeilHambly
London SQL Server UG Presentation, @ Microsoft Victoria (17 th March 2010). As this was my First UG Presentation I picked a topic and dutifully researched and prepared the PowerPoint Slides & a brief introduction, @ the last minute we needed to change the order of presentations due to small technical hitch with one of the laptops for the first presentation. So having an earlier appearance, meant I conveniently forgot what I had planned (funny that!), so It was a more thinking-on-your-feet kind...(read more)

  • SSIS 2012 formating quirks

    - by Kevin Shyr
There are so many funny quirks in SSIS 2012 that I have to list them, to save other people from the misery. If you want to move items to one direction, make sure you "grab" the opposite side.  For example, you want a whole bunch of data flows to move up, select them all and grab the lowest item. When you drag the arrow to connect Precendence Constraint, make sure you drop it on the area of target that has no text, otherwise, it thinks you want to edit the text and change the target item layout
