  • entity framework insert bug

    - by tmfkmoney
    I found a previous question which seemed related but there's no resolution and it's 5 months old so I've opened my own version. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1545583/entity-framework-inserting-new-entity-via-objectcontext-does-not-use-existing-e When I insert records into my database with the following it works fine for a while and then eventually it starts inserting null values in the referenced field. This typically happens after I do an update on my model from the database although not always after I do an update. I'm using a MySQL database for this. I have debugged the code and the values are being set properly before the save event. They're just not getting inserted properly. I can always fix this issue by re-creating the model without touching any of my code. I have to recreate the entire model, though. I can't just dump the relevant tables and re-add them. This makes me think it doesn't have anything to do with my code but something with the entity framework. Does anyone else have this problem and/or solved it? using (var db = new MyModel()) { var stocks = from record in query let ticker = record.Ticker select new { company = db.Companies.FirstOrDefault(c => c.ticker == ticker), price = Convert.ToDecimal(record.Price), date_stamp = Convert.ToDateTime(record.DateTime) }; foreach (var stock in stocks) { if (stock.company != null) { var price = new StockPrice { Company = stock.company, price = stock.price, date_stamp = stock.date_stamp }; db.AddToStockPrices(price); } } db.SaveChanges(); }

  • Help with MySQL query... Need help ordering a group of rows

    - by user156814
    I can tell it best by explaining the query I have, and what I need. I need to be able to get a group of items from the database, grouped by category, manufacturer, and year made. The groupings need to be sorted based on total amount of items within the group. This part is done with the query below. Secondly, I need to be able to show an image of the most expensive item out of the group, which is why I use MAX(items.current_price). I thought MAX() gets the ENTIRE row corresponding to the largest column value. I was wrong, as MAX only gets the numeric value of the largest price. So the query doesnt work well for that. SELECT items.id, items.year, items.manufacturer, COUNT(items.id) AS total, MAX(items.current_price) AS price, items.gallery_url, FROM ebay AS items WHERE items.primary_category_id = 213 AND items.year <> '' AND items.manufacturer <> '' AND items.bad_item <> 1 GROUP BY items.primary_category_id, items.manufacturer, items.year ORDER BY total DESC, price ASC LIMIT 10 if that doesnt explain it well, the results should be something like this id 10548 year 1989 manufacturer bowman total 451 price 8500.00 (The price of the most expensive item in the table/ not the price of item 10548) gallery_url http://ebay.xxxxx (The image of item 10548) A little help please. Thanks

  • user enter data to different arrays

    - by user2900469
    This is fragment of my code (arrays as you can see): double[] Price; String[] names; int[] Quantity; Price = new double[5]; names = new String[5]; Quantity = new int[5]; Price[1] = 3.10; Price[2] = 7.80; Price[3] = 0.20; names[1] = "Ballpen"; names[2] = "Notebook"; names[3] = "Envelope"; Quantity[1] = 20; Quantity[2] = 5; Quantity[3] = 140; I enter data to arrays by myself in this case. Now i want to change my code so that my program asks user for names, price and quantity (using the Scanner class). After user enter data, program keep this in three different arrays. I dont know how to transfer data from user to arrays. I would be grateful for some example code or any help.

  • <h:selectOneMenu> ValueChangeListener Problem

    - by Ehsun
    I have two <h:selectOneMenu> tags on my form like this: <h:outputText value="#{lbls.incomeType}:"/> <h:selectOneMenu id="incomeType" label="#{lbls.incomeType}" onchange="submit();" valueChangeListener="#{price.earnTypeValueChanged}" immediate="true"> <f:selectItems value="#{price.earnTypes}"/> <f:converter converterId="ir.khorasancustoms.EarnTypeConverter"/> </h:selectOneMenu> <h:message for="incomeType" infoClass="info" errorClass="error" warnClass="warning" fatalClass="fatal"/> <h:outputText value="#{lbls.earnAttribute}:"/> <h:selectOneMenu id="earnAttribute" label="#{lbls.earnAttribute}" value="#{price.price.earnAttribute}"> <f:selectItems value="#{price.earnAttributes}"/> <f:converter converterId="ir.khorasancustoms.EarnAttributeConverter"/> </h:selectOneMenu> <h:message for="incomeType" infoClass="info" errorClass="error" warnClass="warning" fatalClass="fatal"/> <h:messages globalOnly="true" layout="table" infoClass="info" warnClass="warning" errorClass="error" fatalClass="fatal"/> <h:button value="#{lbls.cancel}" outcome="index"/> <h:commandButton value="#{lbls.ok}" action="#{price.save}"/> the handler in the bean looks like this: public void earnTypeValueChanged(ValueChangeEvent event) { EarnType newEarnType = (EarnType) event.getNewValue(); earnAttributes = newEarnType.getAttributes(); FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().renderResponse(); } Everything works fine, except the user needs to press the OK button twice because the first one fires the earnTypeValueChanged. How is that caused and how can I fix it? Update 1: public void earnTypeValueChanged(ValueChangeEvent event) { EarnType oldEarnType = (EarnType) event.getOldValue(); EarnType newEarnType = (EarnType) event.getNewValue(); earnAttributes = newEarnType.getAttributes(); if (!newEarnType.equals(oldEarnType)) { FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().renderResponse(); } }

  • Is CDS a valid analogy for pointers? [closed]

    - by Flinkman
    So.. bear with me. I just found an analogy to c++ pointers and CDS. This clip describes CDS(Credit Default Swaps). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPNdYtrlgaU#t=120s "Here we know we have an instrument of a particular financial instrument that is demonstrably dangerous, it creates long chains of risk which are vulnerable to the failure of individual trader or market partipants, in that chain and these instruments in an affect permit the creation of vicious spirals. In which the CDS price interact with the bound price, the market price and you can have a downward spiral." What my ears are telling me: "Don't create dependences that will create long chains of crashing systems." Update: Trying to clarify with something that is closer to the readers. If I change the words: instrument = construct financial = language trader = object market partipants = c structs CDS price = uptime bound price = outcome market price = ROI(return on incestment) The quote become more understandable. Look: "Here we know we have construct of a particular language construct that is demonstrably dangerous, it creates long chains of risk which are vulnerable to the failure of individual object or structs in that chain and these system in an affect permit the creation of vicious spirals. In which the uptime interact with the outcome, the ROI and you can have a downward spiral."

  • Dynamic Array of Objects Sans Vector Class

    - by Connor Black
    I am doing a homework assignment for my summer OO class and we need to write two classes. One is called Sale and the other is called Register. I've written my Sale class; here's the .h file: enum ItemType {BOOK, DVD, SOFTWARE, CREDIT}; class Sale { public: Sale(); // default constructor, // sets numerical member data to 0 void MakeSale(ItemType x, double amt); ItemType Item(); // Returns the type of item in the sale double Price(); // Returns the price of the sale double Tax(); // Returns the amount of tax on the sale double Total(); // Returns the total price of the sale void Display(); // outputs sale info private: double price; // price of item or amount of credit double tax; // amount of sales tax double total; // final price once tax is added in. ItemType item; // transaction type }; For the Register class we need to include a dynamic array of Sale objects in our member data. We cannot use the vector class. How is this done? Here's my 'Register' '.h' class Register{ public: Register(int ident, int amount); ~Register(); int GetID(){return identification;} int GetAmount(){return amountMoney;} void RingUpSale(ItemType item, int basePrice); void ShowLast(); void ShowAll(); void Cancel(); int SalesTax(int n); private: int identification; int amountMoney; };

    - by 432skronker
    I am having issues with using in_array() inside a foreach loop. Not sure if this is even possible or if I am doing something ridiculous where there are better ways. What I want to do is go through all the items and if their item id matches one thats in the array, return true and add the price of the item to a runninng total. $price = 0; $result = false; $array = array(1533, 2343, 2333); foreach($order['items'] as $item){ if(in_array($item['Item'], $array)){ $result = true; $price += $item['Price']; } } **UPDATED** Here is the order array [items] => Array ( [0] => Array ( [Item] => 139957 [OrderID] => 16025 [SizeID] => 24 [Price] => 46.00 ) [1] => Array ( [Item] => 2343 [OrderID] => 16025 [SizeID] => 12 [Price] => 32.00 ) ) [data] => Array ( )

  • Ruby gems gone after after jruby install

    - by James
    Today I installed jruby by downloading it, extracting it to /home/james/jruby-1.4.0 and adding the following line to .bashrc export JRUBY_HOME=/home/james/jruby-1.4.0 export PATH=$JRUBY_HOME/bin:$PATH And then I installed some jruby gems via jruby -S gem install ... Jruby works fine, but this seemed to have cause two problems: 1) When I try to run a ruby (not jruby) on rails migration, I see: Missing the Rails gem. Please `gem install -v= rails`, update your RAILS_GEM_VERSION setting in config/environment.rb for the Rails version you do have installed, or comment out RAILS_GEM_VERSION to use the latest version installed. 2) when I do gem list --local, I only see the gems that I've installed for jruby. Launching web applications via ruby script/server succeeds without any warnings. Please help.

  • Favorite moments of JavaOne

    - by Tori Wieldt
    There are so many events and sessions to attend at JavaOne, it's unfair to ask people to choose just one thing they liked, but here are some favorite moments: I loved meeting many open source contributors and friends I have not met in person before and seeing that projects like e.g. Hudson are alive and kicking and have a great future ahead of them. -Manfred Moser My "The Problem with Women" session. It had LOADS of interactivity from the audience, who really helped to make that session.  I came out if it with a real sense of optimism - we love our jobs, we love what we do, and we should be proud of telling everyone about it to attract different talent into the industry. (Read her blog JavaOne: The Problem With Women - A Technical Approach for details.) -Trish Gee My kudos to Oracle for making the presentation materials quickly available to the public. Some of them were already available during JavaOne. Lots of slide decks are already there, and in some cases you may even find the video recordings too. Go to http://www.oracle.com/javaone and select JavaOne Technical Sessions.  -Yakov Fain I loved that not only was James Gosling present at the Community Keynote (which felt more like the keynotes of old times [big space, big screens, fun and tech]) but he was also found wandering the halls of the Hilton the day prior. Bring back James! Add back the toys section in the Community Keynote. Let the t-shirt tossing begin anew. These are "small" things that really fire up the community. -Andres Almiray Seeing James Gosling at JavaOne was a real shot in the arm for Java.  He needs to be there every year. -Frank Greco +42 on having James and the T-shirt tossing. -Stephan Janssen The session "Integrate Java with Robots, Home Automation, Musical Instruments, and Kinect." Fabiane Nardon explained connecting Jenkins to jHome to a truck horn placed in their sysadmin's bedroom. She dubbed it "extreme feedback."  -Tori Wieldt The User Group Forum [on Sunday] was a success! Congratulations Bruno Souza and John Yeary and everybody that were involved. I believe it really helps to increase community participation! There were lots of interesting talks, and great discussion with JUG leaders and members. Thank you Oracle for supporting that! -Yara Senger What was your favorite moment? Please comment!

The reason for that is that I need to have individual popup tooltips on mouse-over each table row. Many Thanks in advance for any kind of help or suggestions!

  • JavaScript Coding for Finding Shipping Total

    - by user2913279
    I am having a very hard time with this code. I have been working on it for days and cannot seem to figure it out. Please help!! Here are the specific I need for the code: Many companies normally charge a shipping and handling charge for purchases. Create a Web page that allows a user to enter a purchase price into a text box and includes a JavaScript function that calculates shipping and handling. Add functionality to the script that adds a minimum shipping and handling charge of $1.50 for any purchase that is less than or equal to $25.00. For any orders over $25.00, add 10% to the total purchase price for shipping and handling, but do not include the $1.50 minimum shipping and handling charge. The formula for calculating a percentage is price * percent / 100. For example, the formula for calculating 10% of a $50.00 purchase price is 50 * 10 / 100, which results in a shipping and handling charge of $5.00. After you determine the total cost of the order (purchase plus shipping and handling), display it in an alert dialog box. Here is the code I have: <!DOCTYPE> <head> <title>Calculate Shipping</title> <script type="text/javascript"> function parseInt() { var salesPrice = document.salesForm.Price.value; var minCharge = salesPrice + 1.50; var shipping = salesPrice * 10/100; if (salesPrice <= 25) window.alert('Your sales total including shipping is $' + minCharge); else window.alert('Your sales total including shipping is $' + salesPrice + shipping); } </script> </head> <body> <form name="salesForm"> <div > <p>Enter Your Purchase Price</p> <input type="text" name="Price" /><br /><br /> <input type="button" name="Calculate" value="Calculate Shipping" onclick="parseInt ()" /> </div> </form> </body> </html> Everything works except for the math in the alert box. It will show an incorrect total...

  • Synchronize Data between a Silverlight ListBox and a User Control

    - by psheriff
    One of the great things about XAML is the powerful data-binding capabilities. If you load up a list box with a collection of objects, you can display detail data about each object without writing any C# or VB.NET code. Take a look at Figure 1 that shows a collection of Product objects in a list box. When you click on a list box you bind the current Product object selected in the list box to a set of controls in a user control with just a very simple Binding statement in XAML.  Figure 1: Synchronizing a ListBox to a User Control is easy with Data Binding Product and Products Classes To illustrate this data binding feature I am going to just create some local data instead of using a WCF service. The code below shows a Product class that has three properties, namely, ProductId, ProductName and Price. This class also has a constructor that takes 3 parameters and allows us to set the 3 properties in an instance of our Product class. C#public class Product{  public Product(int productId, string productName, decimal price)  {    ProductId = productId;    ProductName = productName;    Price = price;  }   public int ProductId { get; set; }  public string ProductName { get; set; }  public decimal Price { get; set; }} VBPublic Class Product  Public Sub New(ByVal _productId As Integer, _                 ByVal _productName As String, _                 ByVal _price As Decimal)    ProductId = _productId    ProductName = _productName    Price = _price  End Sub   Private mProductId As Integer  Private mProductName As String  Private mPrice As Decimal   Public Property ProductId() As Integer    Get      Return mProductId    End Get    Set(ByVal value As Integer)      mProductId = value    End Set  End Property   Public Property ProductName() As String    Get      Return mProductName    End Get    Set(ByVal value As String)      mProductName = value    End Set  End Property   Public Property Price() As Decimal    Get      Return mPrice    End Get    Set(ByVal value As Decimal)      mPrice = value    End Set  End PropertyEnd Class To fill up a list box you need a collection class of Product objects. The code below creates a generic collection class of Product objects. In the constructor of the Products class I have hard-coded five product objects and added them to the collection. In a real-world application you would get your data through a call to service to fill the list box, but for simplicity and just to illustrate the data binding, I am going to just hard code the data. C#public class Products : List<Product>{  public Products()  {    this.Add(new Product(1, "Microsoft VS.NET 2008", 1000));    this.Add(new Product(2, "Microsoft VS.NET 2010", 1000));    this.Add(new Product(3, "Microsoft Silverlight 4", 1000));    this.Add(new Product(4, "Fundamentals of N-Tier eBook", 20));    this.Add(new Product(5, "ASP.NET Security eBook", 20));  }} VBPublic Class Products  Inherits List(Of Product)   Public Sub New()    Me.Add(New Product(1, "Microsoft VS.NET 2008", 1000))    Me.Add(New Product(2, "Microsoft VS.NET 2010", 1000))    Me.Add(New Product(3, "Microsoft Silverlight 4", 1000))    Me.Add(New Product(4, "Fundamentals of N-Tier eBook", 20))    Me.Add(New Product(5, "ASP.NET Security eBook", 20))  End SubEnd Class The Product Detail User Control Below is a user control (named ucProduct) that is used to display the product detail information seen in the bottom portion of Figure 1. This is very basic XAML that just creates a text block and a text box control for each of the three properties in the Product class. Notice the {Binding Path=[PropertyName]} on each of the text box controls. This means that if the DataContext property of this user control is set to an instance of a Product class, then the data in the properties of that Product object will be displayed in each of the text boxes. <UserControl x:Class="SL_SyncListBoxAndUserControl_CS.ucProduct"  xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"  xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"  HorizontalAlignment="Left"  VerticalAlignment="Top">  <Grid Margin="4">    <Grid.RowDefinitions>      <RowDefinition Height="Auto" />      <RowDefinition Height="Auto" />      <RowDefinition Height="Auto" />    </Grid.RowDefinitions>    <Grid.ColumnDefinitions>      <ColumnDefinition MinWidth="120" />      <ColumnDefinition />    </Grid.ColumnDefinitions>    <TextBlock Grid.Row="0"               Grid.Column="0"               Text="Product Id" />    <TextBox Grid.Row="0"             Grid.Column="1"             Text="{Binding Path=ProductId}" />    <TextBlock Grid.Row="1"               Grid.Column="0"               Text="Product Name" />    <TextBox Grid.Row="1"             Grid.Column="1"             Text="{Binding Path=ProductName}" />    <TextBlock Grid.Row="2"               Grid.Column="0"               Text="Price" />    <TextBox Grid.Row="2"             Grid.Column="1"             Text="{Binding Path=Price}" />  </Grid></UserControl> Synchronize ListBox with User Control You are now ready to fill the list box with the collection class of Product objects and then bind the SelectedItem of the list box to the Product detail user control. The XAML below is the complete code for Figure 1. <UserControl x:Class="SL_SyncListBoxAndUserControl_CS.MainPage"  xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"  xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"  xmlns:src="clr-namespace:SL_SyncListBoxAndUserControl_CS"  VerticalAlignment="Top"  HorizontalAlignment="Left">  <UserControl.Resources>    <src:Products x:Key="productCollection" />  </UserControl.Resources>  <Grid x:Name="LayoutRoot"        Margin="4"        Background="White">    <Grid.RowDefinitions>      <RowDefinition Height="Auto" />      <RowDefinition Height="*" />    </Grid.RowDefinitions>    <ListBox x:Name="lstData"             Grid.Row="0"             BorderBrush="Black"             BorderThickness="1"             ItemsSource="{Binding                   Source={StaticResource productCollection}}"             DisplayMemberPath="ProductName" />    <src:ucProduct x:Name="prodDetail"                   Grid.Row="1"                   DataContext="{Binding ElementName=lstData,                                          Path=SelectedItem}" />  </Grid></UserControl> The first step to making this happen is to reference the Silverlight project (SL_SyncListBoxAndUserControl_CS) where the Product and Products classes are located. I added this namespace and assigned it a namespace prefix of “src” as shown in the line below: xmlns:src="clr-namespace:SL_SyncListBoxAndUserControl_CS" Next, to use the data from an instance of the Products collection, you create a UserControl.Resources section in the XAML and add a tag that creates an instance of the Products class and assigns it a key of “productCollection”.   <UserControl.Resources>    <src:Products x:Key="productCollection" />  </UserControl.Resources> Next, you bind the list box to this productCollection object using the ItemsSource property. You bind the ItemsSource of the list box to the static resource named productCollection. You can then set the DisplayMemberPath attribute of the list box to any property of the Product class that you want. In the XAML below I used the ProductName property. <ListBox x:Name="lstData"         ItemsSource="{Binding             Source={StaticResource productCollection}}"         DisplayMemberPath="ProductName" /> You now need to create an instance of the ucProduct user contol below the list box. You do this by once again referencing the “src” namespace and typing in the name of the user control. You then set the DataContext property on this user control to a binding. The binding uses the ElementName attribute to bind to the list box name, in this case “lstData”. The Path of the data is SelectedItem. These two attributes together tell Silverlight to bind the DataContext to the selected item of the list box. That selected item is a Product object. So, once this is bound, the bindings on each text box in the user control are updated and display the current product information. <src:ucProduct x:Name="prodDetail"               DataContext="{Binding ElementName=lstData,                                      Path=SelectedItem}" /> Summary Once you understand the basics of data binding in XAML, you eliminate a lot code that is otherwise needed to move data into controls and out of controls back into an object. Connecting two controls together is easy by just binding using the ElementName and Path properties of the Binding markup extension. Another good tip out of this blog is use user controls and set the DataContext of the user control to have all of the data on the user control update through the bindings. • Read XML Files using LINQ to XML and Extension Methods

    - by psheriff
    In previous blog posts I have discussed how to use XML files to store data in your applications. I showed you how to read those XML files from your project and get XML from a WCF service. One of the problems with reading XML files is when elements or attributes are missing. If you try to read that missing data, then a null value is returned. This can cause a problem if you are trying to load that data into an object and a null is read. This blog post will show you how to create extension methods to detect null values and return valid values to load into your object. The XML Data An XML data file called Product.xml is located in the \Xml folder of the Silverlight sample project for this blog post. This XML file contains several rows of product data that will be used in each of the samples for this post. Each row has 4 attributes; namely ProductId, ProductName, IntroductionDate and Price. <Products>  <Product ProductId="1"           ProductName="Haystack Code Generator for .NET"           IntroductionDate="07/01/2010"  Price="799" />  <Product ProductId="2"           ProductName="ASP.Net Jumpstart Samples"           IntroductionDate="05/24/2005"  Price="0" />  ...  ...</Products> The Product Class Just as you create an Entity class to map each column in a table to a property in a class, you should do the same for an XML file too. In this case you will create a Product class with properties for each of the attributes in each element of product data. The following code listing shows the Product class. public class Product : CommonBase{  public const string XmlFile = @"Xml/Product.xml";   private string _ProductName;  private int _ProductId;  private DateTime _IntroductionDate;  private decimal _Price;   public string ProductName  {    get { return _ProductName; }    set {      if (_ProductName != value) {        _ProductName = value;        RaisePropertyChanged("ProductName");      }    }  }   public int ProductId  {    get { return _ProductId; }    set {      if (_ProductId != value) {        _ProductId = value;        RaisePropertyChanged("ProductId");      }    }  }   public DateTime IntroductionDate  {    get { return _IntroductionDate; }    set {      if (_IntroductionDate != value) {        _IntroductionDate = value;        RaisePropertyChanged("IntroductionDate");      }    }  }   public decimal Price  {    get { return _Price; }    set {      if (_Price != value) {        _Price = value;        RaisePropertyChanged("Price");      }    }  }} NOTE: The CommonBase class that the Product class inherits from simply implements the INotifyPropertyChanged event in order to inform your XAML UI of any property changes. You can see this class in the sample you download for this blog post. Reading Data When using LINQ to XML you call the Load method of the XElement class to load the XML file. Once the XML file has been loaded, you write a LINQ query to iterate over the “Product” Descendants in the XML file. The “select” portion of the LINQ query creates a new Product object for each row in the XML file. You retrieve each attribute by passing each attribute name to the Attribute() method and retrieving the data from the “Value” property. The Value property will return a null if there is no data, or will return the string value of the attribute. The Convert class is used to convert the value retrieved into the appropriate data type required by the Product class. private void LoadProducts(){  XElement xElem = null;   try  {    xElem = XElement.Load(Product.XmlFile);     // The following will NOT work if you have missing attributes    var products =         from elem in xElem.Descendants("Product")        orderby elem.Attribute("ProductName").Value        select new Product        {          ProductId = Convert.ToInt32(            elem.Attribute("ProductId").Value),          ProductName = Convert.ToString(            elem.Attribute("ProductName").Value),          IntroductionDate = Convert.ToDateTime(            elem.Attribute("IntroductionDate").Value),          Price = Convert.ToDecimal(elem.Attribute("Price").Value)        };     lstData.DataContext = products;  }  catch (Exception ex)  {    MessageBox.Show(ex.Message);  }} This is where the problem comes in. If you have any missing attributes in any of the rows in the XML file, or if the data in the ProductId or IntroductionDate is not of the appropriate type, then this code will fail! The reason? There is no built-in check to ensure that the correct type of data is contained in the XML file. This is where extension methods can come in real handy. Using Extension Methods Instead of using the Convert class to perform type conversions as you just saw, create a set of extension methods attached to the XAttribute class. These extension methods will perform null-checking and ensure that a valid value is passed back instead of an exception being thrown if there is invalid data in your XML file. private void LoadProducts(){  var xElem = XElement.Load(Product.XmlFile);   var products =       from elem in xElem.Descendants("Product")      orderby elem.Attribute("ProductName").Value      select new Product      {        ProductId = elem.Attribute("ProductId").GetAsInteger(),        ProductName = elem.Attribute("ProductName").GetAsString(),        IntroductionDate =            elem.Attribute("IntroductionDate").GetAsDateTime(),        Price = elem.Attribute("Price").GetAsDecimal()      };   lstData.DataContext = products;} Writing Extension Methods To create an extension method you will create a class with any name you like. In the code listing below is a class named XmlExtensionMethods. This listing just shows a couple of the available methods such as GetAsString and GetAsInteger. These methods are just like any other method you would write except when you pass in the parameter you prefix the type with the keyword “this”. This lets the compiler know that it should add this method to the class specified in the parameter. public static class XmlExtensionMethods{  public static string GetAsString(this XAttribute attr)  {    string ret = string.Empty;     if (attr != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(attr.Value))    {      ret = attr.Value;    }     return ret;  }   public static int GetAsInteger(this XAttribute attr)  {    int ret = 0;    int value = 0;     if (attr != null && !string.IsNullOrEmpty(attr.Value))    {      if(int.TryParse(attr.Value, out value))        ret = value;    }     return ret;  }   ...  ...} Each of the methods in the XmlExtensionMethods class should inspect the XAttribute to ensure it is not null and that the value in the attribute is not null. If the value is null, then a default value will be returned such as an empty string or a 0 for a numeric value. Summary Extension methods are a great way to simplify your code and provide protection to ensure problems do not occur when reading data. You will probably want to create more extension methods to handle XElement objects as well for when you use element-based XML. Feel free to extend these extension methods to accept a parameter which would be the default value if a null value is detected, or any other parameters you wish. NOTE: You can download the complete sample code at my website. http://www.pdsa.com/downloads. Choose “Tips & Tricks”, then "Read XML Files using LINQ to XML and Extension Methods" from the drop-down. • Ideas for reducing storage needs and/or costs (lots of images)

    - by James P.
    Hi, I'm the webmaster for a small social network and have noticed that images uploaded by users are taking a big portion of the capacity available. These are mostly JPEGs. What solutions could I apply to reduce storage needs? Is there a way to reduce the size of images without affecting quality too much? Is there a service out there that could be used to store static files at a cheaper price (< 1GB/0.04 eurocents)? Edit: Updated the question.

  • How to handle mutiple API calls using javascript/jquery

    - by James Privett
    I need to build a service that will call multiple API's at the same time and then output the results on the page (Think of how a price comparison site works for example). The idea being that as each API call completes the results are sent to the browser immediately and the page would get progressively bigger until all process are complete. Because these API calls may take several seconds each to return I would like to do this via javascript/jquery in order to create a better user experience. I have never done anything like this before using javascript/jquery so I was wondering if there was any frameworks/advice that anyone would be willing to share.

  • Site failing randomly - could it be Cloudflare or something weird in the JS?

    - by James
    I've been working on a simple site that uses javascript to fade through some fullscreen background images as well as some other simple animations. I've tested the site on Chrome, Safari, FF and Opera on OSX, IE8+ on Win7 and Chrome & FF on Ubuntu and everything looks as I'd expect it to. However, I've had reports of the site failing to load (stops at the stage where the background fades up) on Safari and Chrome on OSX and Win. I can't replicate this on any setup so I'm finding it impossible to troubleshoot. Google's instant preview shows the site fine as does most of the options at browsershots.org so I'm really scratching my head. I'm running the site's traffic through Cloudflare and I'm wondering whether anyone can see (or knows from other sites) why Cloudflare might be mangling the JS or causing a problem somehow (I don't get any errors in the JS error console). Of course, if you can replicate the problem on your machine and can suggest an area to look at that would be amazing but I'm hoping that, like me, you don't see any problem with the site! Here's the site: http://www.bighornrevelstoke.com Thanks, James

  • XSL to show highest number of copies in catalog.xml file

    - by SANJAY RAO
    In this the catalog.xml file. I have two books who have the same inventory (i.e. 20). I want to write an XSL file that will display the highest number of copies of a book in a catalog. If there are two or more books of the same inventory then they have to be displayed. <catalog> <Book> <sku>12345</sku> <title>Beauty Secrets</title> <condition>New</condition> <current_inventory>20</current_inventory> <price>99.99</price> </Book> <Book> <sku>54321</sku> <title>Picturescapes</title> <current_inventory>20</current_inventory> <condition>New</condition> <price>50.00</price> </Book> <Book> <sku>33333</sku> <title>Tourist Perspectives</title> <condition>New</condition> <current_inventory>0</current_inventory> <price>75.00</price> </Book> <Book> <sku>10001</sku> <title>Fire in the Sky</title> <condition>Used</condition> <current_inventory>0</current_inventory> <price>10.00</price> </Book> </catalog> Below is my catalog3.xsl file which is able to display only one out of the two books: <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0" xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" > <xsl:variable name="max"/> <xsl:template match="/"> <html> <body> <h2>Titles of Books for which Most Copies are Available</h2> <table border="2"> <tr bgcolor="#9acd32"> <th>Title</th> <th>No of Copies</th> </tr> <xsl:apply-templates/> </table> </body> </html> </xsl:template> <xsl:template match="catalog"> <xsl:for-each select="Book"> <xsl:sort select="current_inventory" data-type="number" order="descending"/> <tr> <xsl:if test="position()= 1"> <p><xsl:value-of select="$max = "/></p> <td><xsl:value-of select="title"/></td> <td><xsl:value-of select="current_inventory"/></td> </xsl:if> </tr> </xsl:for-each> </xsl:template> </xsl:stylesheet> Could anybody correct me to achieve my goal of displaying all the copies having the same maximum inventory in the catalog.   • Binding DataTable To GridView, But No Rows In GridViewRowCollection Despite GridView Population?

    - by KSwift87
    Problem: I've coded a GridView in the markup in a page. I have coded a DataTable in the code-behind that takes data from a collection of custom objects. I then bind that DataTable to the GridView. (Specific problem mentioned a couple code-snippets below.) GridView Markup: <asp:GridView ID="gvCart" runat="server" CssClass="pList" AutoGenerateColumns="false" DataKeyNames="ProductID"> <Columns> <asp:BoundField DataField="ProductID" HeaderText="ProductID" /> <asp:BoundField DataField="Name" HeaderText="ProductName" /> <asp:ImageField DataImageUrlField="Thumbnail" HeaderText="Thumbnail"></asp:ImageField> <asp:BoundField DataField="Unit Price" HeaderText="Unit Price" /> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Quantity"> <ItemTemplate> <asp:TextBox ID="Quantity" runat="server" Text="<%# Bind('Quantity') %>" Width="25px"></asp:TextBox> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:BoundField DataField="Total Price" HeaderText="Total Price" /> </Columns> </asp:GridView> DataTable Code-Behind: private void View(List<OrderItem> cart) { DataSet ds = new DataSet(); DataTable dt = ds.Tables.Add("Cart"); if (cart != null) { dt.Columns.Add("ProductID"); dt.Columns.Add("Name"); dt.Columns.Add("Thumbnail"); dt.Columns.Add("Unit Price"); dt.Columns.Add("Quantity"); dt.Columns.Add("Total Price"); foreach (OrderItem item in cart) { DataRow dr = dt.NewRow(); dr["ProductID"] = item.productId.ToString(); dr["Name"] = item.productName; dr["Thumbnail"] = ResolveUrl(item.productThumbnail); dr["Unit Price"] = "$" + item.productPrice.ToString(); dr["Quantity"] = item.productQuantity.ToString(); dr["Total Price"] = "$" + (item.productPrice * item.productQuantity).ToString(); dt.Rows.Add(dr); } gvCart.DataSource = dt; gvCart.DataBind(); gvCart.Width = 500; for (int counter = 0; counter < gvCart.Rows.Count; counter++) { gvCart.Rows[counter].Cells.Add(Common.createCell("<a href='cart.aspx?action=update&prodId=" + gvCart.Rows[counter].Cells[0].Text + "'>Update</a><br /><a href='cart.aspx?action='action=remove&prodId=" + gvCart.Rows[counter].Cells[0].Text + "/>Remove</a>")); } } } Error occurs below in the foreach - the GridViewRowCollection is empty! private void Update(string prodId) { List<OrderItem> cart = (List<OrderItem>)Session["cart"]; int uQty = 0; foreach (GridViewRow gvr in gvCart.Rows) { if (gvr.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow) { if (gvr.Cells[0].Text == prodId) { uQty = int.Parse(((TextBox)gvr.Cells[4].FindControl("Quantity")).Text); } } } Goal: I'm basically trying to find a way to update the data in my GridView (and more importantly my cart Session object) without having to do everything else I've seen online such as utilizing OnRowUpdate, etc. Could someone please tell me why gvCart.Rows is empty and/or how I could accomplish my goal without utilizing OnRowUpdate, etc.? When I execute this code, the GridView gets populated but for some reason I can't access any of its rows in the code-behind.
