  When I write a comment, it's often a paragraph or a few lines that explains clearly what a bit of code is doing and why it's doing that. What I'd like is if I could start a comment, and have the editor automatically insert a line break and continue the comment to the nest line when I reach, say, 80 characters long. So I'd type: // Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. < here the editor breaks automatically and continues onto the next line: // Etiam congue quam eget leo dignissim tincidunt.

• Serialization of a TChan String

  I have declared the following type KEY = (IPv4, Integer) type TPSQ = TVar (PSQ.PSQ KEY POSIXTime) type TMap = TVar (Map.Map KEY [String]) data Qcfg = Qcfg { qthresh :: Int, tdelay :: Rational, cwpsq :: TPSQ, cwmap :: TMap, cw chan :: TChan String } deriving (Show) and would like this to be serializable in a sense that Qcfg can either be written to disk or be sent over the network. When I compile this I get the error No instances for (Show TMap, Show TPSQ, Show (TChan String)) arising from the 'deriving' clause of a data type declaration Possible fix: add instance declarations for (Show TMap, Show TPSQ, Show (TChan String)) or use a standalone 'deriving instance' declaration, so you can specify the instance context yourself When deriving the instance for (Show Qcfg) I am now not quite sure whether there is a chance at all to serialize my TChan although all individual nodes in it are members of the show class. For TMap and TPSQ I wonder whether there are ways to show the values in the TVar directly (because it does not get changed, so there should no need to lock it) without having to declare an instance that does a readTVar ?

• JCP.Next - Early Adopters of JCP 2.8

  JCP.Next is a series of three JSRs (JSR 348, JSR 355 and JSR 358), to be defined through the JCP process itself, with the JCP Executive Committee serving as the Expert Group. The proposed JSRs will modify the JCP's processes  - the Process Document and Java Specification Participation Agreement (JSPA) and will apply to all new JSRs for all Java platforms.   The first - JCP.next.1, or more formally JSR 348, Towards a new version of the Java Community Process - was completed and put into effect in October 2011 as JCP 2.8. This focused on a small number of simple but important changes to make our process more transparent and to enable broader participation. We're already seeing the benefits of these changes as new and existing JSRs adopt the new requirements. The second - JSR 355, Executive Committee Merge, is also Final. You can read the JCP 2.9 Process Document .  As part of the JSR 355 Final Release, the JCP Executive Committee published revisions to the JCP Process Document (version 2.9) and the EC Standing Rules (version 2.2).  The changes went into effect following the 2012 EC Elections in November. The third JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process was submitted in June 2012.  This JSR will modify the Java Specification Participation Agreement (JSPA) as well as the Process Document, and will tackle a large number of complex issues, many of them postponed from JSR 348. For these reasons, the JCP EC (acting as the Expert Group for this JSR), expects to spend a considerable amount of time working on. The JSPA is defined by the JCP as "a one-year, renewable agreement between the Member and Oracle. The success of the Java community depends upon an open and transparent JCP program.  JSR 358, A major revision of the Java Community Process, is now in process and can be followed on java.net.   For the Java EE track at JavaOne 2014 we are highlighting some key sessions and speakers to better inform you of what you can expect, right up until the start of the conference. To this end we recently interviewed Ed Burns. Ed is a veteran of Sun and now Oracle. He has been and is instrumental in pushing the JSF ecosystem forward as specification lead. Besides his specification lead work Ed is well regarded as an author and speaker on his own right. In addition to carrying the JSF torch Ed will be co-leading the key Servlet 4 specification for Java EE 8, along with Servlet specification guru Shing Wai Chan. The primary goal of Servlet 4 is to enable the fundamentally important changes in HTTP 2 for the entire server-side Java ecosystem. Why does this stuff matter? Well, in general, virtualization (or cloud) solutions provide an easy way to create Virtual Machines. Whether it's through a "cloud api" or just a virtualization API. But all you end up with, in the end, is still just a Virtual Machine... Maybe with an OS pre-installed/pre-configured. So you have flexibility of moving VMs around and providing a VM but what about the actual applications (anything more than a very basic app)? The application administrator then still has to go and install and configure the OS for that application and install the application and its patches and basic configuration so that the application user then can go in. Building gold images for complex software stacks that are not owned by the users/admins is always very difficult. With our templates, we provide a number of things : Oracle Linux pre-installed and pre-configured with the minimum required packages for that application to run. (so it's secure) Oracle Linux can be distributed and used for free or with a support subscription. There is no trial license, there is no registration key, no alpha version or community version versus enterprise version. • Block protect (Keep last line of paragraph with next paragraph)

  Is there a way to force Microsoft Word 2010 to keep the last line of a paragraph with the next paragraph? An example of when this is relevant is when starting a block quote; it doesn't look good to have the block quote start at the top of a new page, particularly when it's introduced by a partial sentence, like this: "Lorem ipsum" is sample text widely used in the publishing industry, as the text has spacing roughly similar to that of English and therefore looks "normal" but unintelligible to an English reader's eye, allowing the reader to focus on design elements. It begins, Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Nam rhoncus laoreet risus, quis congue leo viverra congue. Suspendisse magna massa, viverra imperdiet est eu, ultrices volutpat lectus. Sed pulvinar est id risus lobortis venenatis. There shouldn't be a page break after "begins," because it looks like the sentence ends abruptly. "Keep lines together" won't work, because by definition we're talking about two paragraphs. "Keep with next" won't work if the first paragraph is larger than a couple of lines, because then you get an awkwardly large space at the bottom of a page. Manual line breaks obviously work, but only when the document is final, which is often less certain than it seems. I know WordPerfect has a feature called "block protect" that does this, but I have not found even an acceptable substitute in Word. I have played with style separators and hidden paragraph breaks, but to no avail. I would love a special character, kind of like the nonbreaking space or zero width optional space, that tells Word to move to the next page if the next paragraph would otherwise start the page. A macro would also be great, but I haven't been able to find a starting point (like how to detect where non-manual page breaks fall). Edit: It looks like "Keep with next" works this way in Word 2013, but I specifically need a fix that works in Word 2010.

• How to resume XMPP groupchat window in Irssi (using bitlbee)?

  I use Bitlbee to chat in XMPP-networks within my IRC-client Irssi. This works great so far, and recently I started using XMPP Multi User Chats as an alternative to IRC-channels. I set up a channel using chat add <account> <[email protected]> in the &bitlbee control window, set chan <room> set autojoin true and entered /join #room in the &bitlbee window to join that groupchat. It then appears as a unique Irssi window in the status bar. This seems to work ok too, but with one exception: Since I idle in the channels 24/7 my irssi has to cope with the every-night-24h-DSL-disconnection by the ISP. After it automatically reconnects, it does kind of rejoin that XMPP-groupchat, but the traffic of the groupchat does not go back to the unique irssi window, but keeps flooding &bitlbee with messages from root telling me about a Groupchat Message from unknown JID <jid>: <message> - which is the traffic of the groupchat. The unique groupchat window is gone after the reconnect, and I will again have to go /join #room in &bitlbee to get it back. Even worse, the window number is unused before I rejoin the groupchat, and if I get a query from any network, the window nests in that unused window spot, so I will first have to remove that query from the spot, and then move the rejoined groupchat to that window number. I want my groupchat window to resume after the reconnect just like every other IRC channel too. How can I get this done? Any ideas?

• Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names?

  I've got a computer running Windows 8 and in the user accounts I can see four accounts (they're in french, here's a rough translation): leo[email protected] / administrator Veronique YYY / [email protected] ASP.NET Machine Account / local account guest account / the guest account is desactivated I've got several questions but they're all related to email addresses and login names / accounts. Are email addresses mandatory for Windows 8 login names? Can you mix live and non-live user accounts on a Windows 8 system? Is it possible to have a live Windows 8 user account which is not using a @live.xx email address? Is it possible to have a non-live Windows 8 user account which is using a @live.xx email address? If the gmail.com email address of the admin is not a live Windows 8 account, does this mean I can create a "fake" email and use that as the email of a new Windows 8 account? Basically I don't understand very well why there are email addresses displayed on the login screen and why there are both @live.xx and @gmail.com email addresses on the same system and answer to the questions I asked above may help me understand a bit better what is going on (I'm coming from a Linux / OS X background. I literally haven't used Windows in more than a decade).

  I have an aspx page(Default1.aspx),in which i have a static jquery tab and anchor tag upon clicking the anchor tag(Add Tab) I am adding new tab dynamically,which gets its contents loaded from another aspx page(Default2.aspx).This second page contains some text inside a tag,a textarea with 'tinymce' class which is placed inside a div with 'style="display:none" ' and this textarea gets displayed only upon clicking the edit button on that page. The content is floating but not the tabs. Important: there is no width set manually, the current width is taken automatically. • Why do Firefox and Opera ignore max-width inside of display: table-cell?

  The following code displays correctly in Chrome or IE (the image is 200px wide). In Firefox and Opera the max-width style is ignored completely. Why does this happen and is there a good work around? Also, which way is most standards compliant? Note One possible work around for this particular situation is to set max-width to 200px. However, this is a rather contrived example. • UIAlertView choice causing resignFirstResponder to fail

  Hi everyone. I'm having a similar issue to Anthony Chan's question, and after trying every suggested solution, I'm still stuck. Somehow, only after interacting with my UIAlertView, I'm unable to dismiss the keyboard in another view of my app. It's as though the Alert is breaking my UITextField's ability to resignFirstResponder. Below I instantiate my UIAlertView, which then calls its didDismissWIthButtonIndex method. Then, I call the showInfo method, which loads another UIViewController. UIAlertView *emailFailAlert = [[UIAlertView alloc] initWithTitle:@"Error" message:@"error message text." delegate:self cancelButtonTitle:@"Not now" otherButtonTitles:@"Settings", nil]; [emailFailAlert setTag:2]; [emailFailAlert show]; [emailFailAlert release]; Once the 'Settings' option is pressed, I'm calling this method: - (void)alertView:(UIAlertView *)alertView didDismissWithButtonIndex:(NSInteger)buttonIndex { if ([alertView tag] == 2) { if (buttonIndex == 1){ [self showInfo:nil]; } } } My showInfo method loads the other ViewController, via the code below: - (IBAction)showInfo:(id)sender { FlipsideViewController *fscontroller = [[FlipsideViewController alloc] initWithNibName:@"FlipsideView" bundle:nil]; fscontroller.delegate = self; fscontroller.modalTransitionStyle = UIModalTransitionStyleFlipHorizontal; [self presentModalViewController:fscontroller animated:YES]; [fscontroller release]; } Upon clicking any textField in this Flipside VC, I'm unable to dismiss the keyboard as I normally can with - (BOOL)textFieldShouldReturn:(UITextField *)textField, and [textField resignFirstResponder]. I've omitted this code bc this question is getting long, but I'm happy to post if necessary. The interesting part is that if I comment out the [self showInfo:nil] call made when the button is clicked and call it by clicking a test button (outside the alertView didDismissWithButtonIndex: method), everything works fine.   I've audited a SQLS2008 server with Profiler for one day.. the overhead didn't seem to trouble this new client my company has. They are using a legacy VB6 application as a front-end. They're experiencing timeouts once SQLS RAM usage is high. The server is currently running x64 sqls2008 on a VM with nearly 9 GB of RAM. SQL Server's 'max server memory option' is currently set to 6GB. I've put the results of the trace in a table and queried them using this query. SELECT TextData, ApplicationName, Reads FROM [TraceWednesday] WHERE textdata is not null and EventClass = 12 GROUP BY TextData, ApplicationName, Reads ORDER BY Reads DESC As I expected, some values are very high. Top Reads, in pages. 2504188 1965910 1445636 1252433 1239108 1210153 1088580 1072725 Am I correct in thinking that the top one (2504188 pages) is 20033504 KB, which then is roughly ~20'000 MB, 20GB? These queries are often executed and can take quite some time to run. Eventually RAM is used up because of the cache fattening, and timeouts occur once SQL cannot 'splash' pages in the buffer pool as much. Costs go up. Am I correct in my understanding? I've read that I should tune the associated T-SQL and create appropriate indices. Obviously cutting down the I/O would make SQL Server use less RAM. OR, maybe it might just slow down the process of chewing up the whole RAM. If a lot less pages are read, maybe it'll all run much better even when usage is high? (less time swapping, etc.) Currently, our only option is to restart SQL once a week when RAM usage is high, suddenly the timeouts disappear. SQL breathes again. I'm sure lots of DBAs have been in this situation.. I'm asking before I start digging out all of the bad T-SQL and put indices here and there, is there is something else I can do? Any advice except from what I know (not much yet..) Much appreciated. Leo.

• Mobile Apps for Oracle E-Business Suite

Build iOS and Android apps with once code base and get it done! By Steven Chan (Oracle Development)  Many things have changed in the mobile space over the last few years. Here's an update on our strategy for mobile apps for the E-Business Suite. Mobile app strategy We're building our family of mobile apps for the E-Business Suite using Oracle Mobile Application Framework.  This framework allows us to write a single application that can be run on Apple iOS and Google Android platforms. Mobile apps for the E-Business Suite will share a common look-and-feel. The E-Business Suite is a suite of over 200 product modules spanning Financials, Supply Chain, Human Resources, and many other areas. Our mobile app strategy is to release standalone apps for specific product modules.  Our Oracle Timecards app, which allows users to create and submit timecards, is an example of a standalone app. Some common functions that span multiple product areas will have dedicated apps, too. An example of this is ourOracle Approvals app, which allows users to review and approve requests for expenses, requisitions, purchase orders, recruitment vacancies and offers, and more. You can read more about our Oracle Mobile Approvals app here: Now Available: Oracle Mobile Approvals for iOS Our goal is to support smaller screen (e.g. smartphones) as well as larger screens (e.g. tablets), with the smaller screen versions generally delivered first.  Where possible, we will deliver these as universal apps.  An example is our Oracle Mobile Field Service app, which allows field service technicians to remotely access customer, product, service request, and task-related information.  This app can run on a smartphone, while providing a richer experience for tablets. Deploying EBS mobile apps The mobile apps, themselves (i.e. client-side components) can be downloaded by end-users from the Apple iTunes today.  Android versions will be available from Google play. You can monitor this blog for Android-related updates. Where possible, our mobile apps should be deployable with a minimum of server-side changes.  These changes will generally involve a consolidated server-side patch for technology-stack components, and possibly a server-side patch for the functional product module. Updates to existing mobile apps may require new server-side components to enable all of the latest mobile functionality. All EBS product modules are certified for internal intranet deployments (i.e. used by employees within an organization's firewall).  Only a subset of EBS products such as iRecruitment are certified to be deployed externally (i.e. used by non-employees outside of an organization's firewall).  Today, many organizations running the E-Business Suite do not expose their EBS environment externally and all of the mobile apps that we're building are intended for internal employee use.  Recognizing this, our mobile apps are currently designed for users who are connected to the organization's intranet via VPN.  We expect that this may change in future updates to our mobile apps. Mobile apps and internationalization The initial releases of our mobile apps will be in English.  Later updates will include translations for all left-to-right languages supported by the E-Business Suite.  Right-to-left languages will not be translated. Customizing apps for enterprise deployments The current generation of mobile apps for Oracle E-Business Suite cannot be customized. We are evaluating options for limited customizations, including corporate branding with logos, corporate color schemes, and others. • IE7 not digesting JSON: "parse error" [resolved]

  While trying to GET a JSON, my callback function is NOT firing. $.ajax({ type:"GET", dataType:'json', url: myLocalURL, data: myData, success: function(returned_data){alert('success');} }); The strangest part of this is that my JSON(s) validates on JSONlint this ONLY fails on IE7...it works in Safari, Chrome, and all versions of Firefox, (EDIT: and even in IE8). If I use 'error', then it reports "parseError"...even though it validates! Is there anything that I'm missing? Does IE7 not process certain characters, data structures (my data doesn't have anything non-alphanumeric, but it DOES have nested JSONs)? I have used tons of other AJAX calls that all work (even in IE7), but with the exception of THIS call. An example data return (EDIT: This is a structurally-complete example, meaning it is only missing a few second-tier fields, but follows this exact hierarchy)here is: {"question":{ "question_id":"19", "question_text":"testing", "other_crap":"none" }, "timestamp":{ "response":"answer", "response_text":"the text here" } } I am completely at a loss. Hopefully someone has some insight into what's going on...thank you! EDIT Here's a copy of the SIMPLEST case of dummy data that I'm using...it still doesn't work in IE7. { "question":{ "question_id":"20", "question_text":"testing :", "adverse_party":"none", "juris":"California", "recipients":"Carl Chan" } } EDIT 2 I am starting to doubt that it is a JSON issue...but I have NO idea what else it could be. ANSWER I finally managed to figure it out...mostly via tedious trial-and-error. I want to thank everyone for their suggestions...as soon as I have 15 rep, I'll upvote you, I promise. :) There was basically no way that you guys could have figured it out, because the issue turned out to be a strange bug between IE7 and Django (my research didn't bring up any similar issues). We were basically using Django template language to generate our JSON...and in the midst of this particular JSON, we were using custom template tags: {% load customfilter %} { "question":{ "question_id":"{{question.id}}", "question_text":"{{question.question_text|customfilterhere}}" } } As soon as I deleted anything related to the customfilter, IE7 was able to parse the JSON perfectly! • Transitioning accordions from small height to full height with CSS

  I am building an accordion list and I want it to animate open and closed using a CSS -webkit-transition:. The animation is triggered by an event handler that simply toggles the .open class on and off. The problem is that when I click it, the animation goes from closed height to 0px height then jerks back to full height instead of smoothly animating to full height. • GHC.Generics and Type Families

  This is a question related to my module here, and is simplified a bit. It's also related to this previous question, in which I oversimplified my problem and didn't get the answer I was looking for. I hope this isn't too specific, and please change the title if you can think if a better one. Background My module uses a concurrent chan, split into a read side and write side. I use a special class with an associated type synonym to support polymorphic channel "joins": {-# LANGUAGE TypeFamilies #-} class Sources s where type Joined s newJoinedChan :: IO (s, Messages (Joined s)) -- NOT EXPORTED --output and input sides of channel: data Messages a -- NOT EXPORTED data Mailbox a instance Sources (Mailbox a) where type Joined (Mailbox a) = a newJoinedChan = undefined instance (Sources a, Sources b)=> Sources (a,b) where type Joined (a,b) = (Joined a, Joined b) newJoinedChan = undefined -- and so on for tuples of 3,4,5... The code above allows us to do this kind of thing: example = do (mb , msgsA) <- newJoinedChan ((mb1, mb2), msgsB) <- newJoinedChan --say that: msgsA, msgsB :: Messages (Int,Int) --and: mb :: Mailbox (Int,Int) -- mb1,mb2 :: Mailbox Int We have a recursive action called a Behavior that we can run on the messages we pull out of the "read" end of the channel: newtype Behavior a = Behavior (a -> IO (Behavior a)) runBehaviorOn :: Behavior a -> Messages a -> IO () -- NOT EXPORTED This would allow us to run a Behavior (Int,Int) on either of msgsA or msgsB, where in the second case both Ints in the tuple it receives actually came through separate Mailboxes. This is all tied together for the user in the exposed spawn function spawn :: (Sources s) => Behavior (Joined s) -> IO s ...which calls newJoinedChan and runBehaviorOn, and returns the input Sources. What I'd like to do I'd like users to be able to create a Behavior of arbitrary product type (not just tuples) , so for instance we could run a Behavior (Pair Int Int) on the example Messages above. I'd like to do this with GHC.Generics while still having a polymorphic Sources, but can't manage to make it work. spawn :: (Sources s, Generic (Joined s), Rep (Joined s) ~ ??) => Behavior (Joined s) -> IO s The parts of the above example that are actually exposed in the API are the fst of the newJoinedChan action, and Behaviors, so an acceptable solution can modify one or all of runBehaviorOn or the snd of newJoinedChan. I'll also be extending the API above to support sums (not implemented yet) like Behavior (Either a b) so I hoped GHC.Generics would work for me. Questions Is there a way I can extend the API above to support arbitrary Generic a=> Behavior a? If not using GHC's Generics, are there other ways I can get the API I want with minimal end-user pain (i.e. they just have to add a deriving clause to their type)?
