  • Download, Install, and Update Metro-Style Apps from the Windows Store in Windows 8

    - by Lori Kaufman
The Windows Store is similar to the app stores for Apple iOS and Android devices and Windows phones. It allows you to buy and download both free and paid Metro-style apps for Windows 8. When you purchase an app from the Windows Store, it can be installed on up to five Windows PCs or tablets. A Microsoft email account is also required to download and install apps from the Windows store. NOTE: How-To Geek has released a Geek Trivia app for Windows 8. For more information about the app and for a link to download it, see our article. This article shows you how to download, install, and update Metro-style apps from the Windows Store. We also show you how to uninstall an app from the Metro Start screen. • using Unity Android In a sub view and add actionbar and style

    - by aeroxr1
    I exported a simple animation from Unity3D (version 4.5) in android project. With eclipse I modified the manifest and added another activity. In this activity I put a button that it makes start the animation,and this is the result. The action bar appear in the main activity but it doesn't in the unity's activity :( How can I add the action bar and the style of the first activity to unity's animation activity ? This is the unity's activity's code : package com.rabidgremlin.tut.redcube; import android.app.NativeActivity; import android.content.res.Configuration; import android.graphics.PixelFormat; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.KeyEvent; import android.view.MotionEvent; import android.view.View; import android.view.ViewGroup; import android.view.Window; import android.view.WindowManager; import com.unity3d.player.UnityPlayer; public class UnityPlayerNativeActivity extends NativeActivity { protected UnityPlayer mUnityPlayer; // don't change the name of this variable; referenced from native code // Setup activity layout @Override protected void onCreate (Bundle savedInstanceState) { //requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); getWindow().takeSurface(null); //setTheme(android.R.style.Theme_NoTitleBar_Fullscreen); getWindow().setFormat(PixelFormat.RGB_565); mUnityPlayer = new UnityPlayer(this); /*if (mUnityPlayer.getSettings ().getBoolean ("hide_status_bar", true)) getWindow ().setFlags (WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN, WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN); */ setContentView(mUnityPlayer); mUnityPlayer.requestFocus(); } // Quit Unity @Override protected void onDestroy () { mUnityPlayer.quit(); super.onDestroy(); } // Pause Unity @Override protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); mUnityPlayer.pause(); } // eliminiamo questa onResume() e proviamo a modificare la onResume() // Resume Unity @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); mUnityPlayer.resume(); } // inseriamo qualche modifica qui // This ensures the layout will be correct. @Override public void onConfigurationChanged(Configuration newConfig) { super.onConfigurationChanged(newConfig); mUnityPlayer.configurationChanged(newConfig); } // Notify Unity of the focus change. @Override public void onWindowFocusChanged(boolean hasFocus) { super.onWindowFocusChanged(hasFocus); mUnityPlayer.windowFocusChanged(hasFocus); } // For some reason the multiple keyevent type is not supported by the ndk. // Force event injection by overriding dispatchKeyEvent(). @Override public boolean dispatchKeyEvent(KeyEvent event) { if (event.getAction() == KeyEvent.ACTION_MULTIPLE) return mUnityPlayer.injectEvent(event); return super.dispatchKeyEvent(event); } // Pass any events not handled by (unfocused) views straight to UnityPlayer @Override public boolean onKeyUp(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) { return mUnityPlayer.injectEvent(event); } @Override public boolean onKeyDown(int keyCode, KeyEvent event) { return mUnityPlayer.injectEvent(event); } @Override public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent event) { return mUnityPlayer.injectEvent(event); } /*API12*/ public boolean onGenericMotionEvent(MotionEvent event) { return mUnityPlayer.injectEvent(event); } } And this is the AndroidManifest.xml android:versionCode="1" android:versionName="1.0" > <!-- android:theme="@android:style/Theme.NoTitleBar"--> <supports-screens android:anyDensity="true" android:largeScreens="true" android:normalScreens="true" android:smallScreens="true" android:xlargeScreens="true" /> <application android:icon="@drawable/app_icon" android:label="@string/app_name" android:theme="@android:style/Theme.Holo.Light" > <activity android:name="com.rabidgremlin.tut.redcube.UnityPlayerNativeActivity" android:configChanges="mcc|mnc|locale|touchscreen|keyboard|keyboardHidden|navigation|orientation|screenLayout|uiMode|screenSize|smallestScreenSize|fontScale" android:label="@string/app_name" android:screenOrientation="portrait" > <!--android:launchMode="singleTask"--> <meta-data android:name="unityplayer.UnityActivity" android:value="true" /> <meta-data android:name="unityplayer.ForwardNativeEventsToDalvik" android:value="false" /> </activity> <activity android:name="com.rabidgremlin.tut.redcube.MainActivity" android:label="@string/title_activity_main" > <intent-filter> <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" /> <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" /> </intent-filter> </activity> </application> <uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="17" android:targetSdkVersion="19" /> <uses-feature android:glEsVersion="0x00020000" /> </manifest>

  • Windows 8: Everything from design, build, and how to sell a Metro style app

    - by Thomas Mason
For me, there are a lot of similarities between an application developed for Windows Phone and a Metro style app developed for Windows 8. A Windows Phone 7 application (rather than an XNA game) is built in .NET and XAML against a subset of the .NET framework and the application has a lifecycle which needs to be conscious of battery life and so is split out into foreground/background pieces. The application is sandboxed in terms of its interactions with the local device and is packaged with a manifest which describes those interactions. The app needs to be aware of network connectivity status and its work on the network is done asynchronously to preserve the user experience. The app is packaged and deployed to a Marketplace which the user browses to find the app, read reviews, perhaps purchase it and then install it and receive updates over time. Quite a lot of those statements are as true of a Windows 8 Metro style app as they are for a Windows Phone app and so a Windows Phone app developer already has a good head start when it comes to building Metro style apps for Windows 8. With that in mind, there is an event to help developers with a Windows Phone app in Marketplace to begin the process of looking at Windows 8 and whether you can get a quick win by bringing your Phone application onto Windows. The idea of the event was to provide a space where developers can get together over 2 days and take the time out to look at what it means to take their app from Windows Phone to Windows 8. Kicking off on Saturday 16th June at 10am, we are told they have plenty of power sockets, WiFi, whiteboards, drinks, pizza, games, prizes and some quiet space that you can work in. Including people on hand with Windows Phone and Windows 8 experience to help everything along the way. There will be an attendee-voted schedule of talks but we’ll keep these out of your way if you just want to get on and code. We’ll also provide information around submitting your app to the Windows Store If you have a Windows Phone app in Marketplace, now’s a great time to look at getting it onto Windows 8. Sign up. Bring your laptop. Bring your app. Bring Windows 8 and Visual Studio 11. And everyone will their best to help you get your app onto Windows 8. Location & Venue TBA but it will be in central London, accessible by major railway and underground transportation. Day 1 Saturday 16th June 10am – 9pm Day 2 Sunday 17th June 10am – 4pm

  • if (condition) continue; OR if (!condition) { ... }? (style preference)

    - by Hosam Aly
I know this is a matter of style, hence the subjective tag. I have a small piece of code, with two nested conditions. I could code it in two ways, and I'd like to see how more experienced developers think it should look like. Style 1: while (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(msg = reader.readMsg())) { RaiseMessageReceived(); if (parseMsg) { ParsedMsg parsedMsg = parser.parseMsg(msg); RaiseMessageParsed(); if (processMsg) { process(parsedMsg); RaiseMessageProcessed(); } } } Style 2: while (!String.IsNullOrEmpty(msg = reader.readMsg())) { RaiseMessageReceived(); if (!parseMsg) continue; ParsedMsg parsedMsg = parser.parseMsg(msg); RaiseMessageParsed(); if (!processMsg) continue; process(parsedMsg); RaiseMessageProcessed(); } (Side question: how do I put empty lines in the source code sample?)

  • Unity 3d (Using Blender) - anime/manga/cel-shaded style characters

    - by David Archer
Making a game using Blender for 3D models and Unity for the game engine. Just wondering if anyone knows any links to pages that give a tutorial on Japanese anime style 3D modelling, texturing and shading through blender. I'm actually looking to create a cel-shaded look eventually (read: Okami/Jet Set Radio style) and I'm kind of stuck with the design stuff. I'm not a Blender expert by any means, and still kind of new to the design side of things (I'm a programmer by trade), so please don't vote me down too hard. I've tried googling, but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of what I'm after. The only thing I've found really is a plugin for blender called freestyle, or using the ToonShader shading tool. If there are any good tutorials or anything, I'm really happy to sit through them - just want to learn :) Thanks for any help :)

  • wpf - Which one is better? Style or User Control?

    - by Archie
Hello, I wanted to know which one amongst Style and UserControl would be better to use in WPF? For example: I have created an image button in two different ways. One uses Style and ContentTemplate property is set. It uses one other class with dependency properties. The other way is i have created a UserControl which has a button and its content property is set. UserControl.xaml.cs file also contains the dependency properties. For Code details see the answers of this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2734825/custom-button-template-in-wpf Which one would be better to use? Can anyone tell me in which scenario one should go for Style or UserControl or any CustomControl? Thanks in advance.

ANd another thing is :What is the difference between writing the query in 1 and 2 formats 1. $query = $this->db->query('YOUR QUERY HERE'); 2. $this->db->select("..."); $this->db->from(); $this->db->where(); Will it have any effect on performance if we use 2nd style... Thank You

  • Why do I get a NullReferenceException when using a style on a ContentPresenter?

    - by Robert Rossney
I've created this template, which uses a style applied to the ContentPresenter so that I can bind the data object's Column property to Grid.Column, allowing the items to determine for themselves which column of the Grid they go into: <DataTemplate DataType="{x:Type local:MyObject}"> <ItemsControl ItemsSource="{Binding Items}"> <ItemsControl.Resources> <Style TargetType="{x:Type ContentPresenter}"> <Setter Property="Grid.Column" Value="{Binding Column}" /> </Style> </ItemsControl.Resources> <ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> <ItemsPanelTemplate> <Grid> <Grid.ColumnDefinitions> <ColumnDefinition Width="*" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="*" /> <ColumnDefinition Width="*" /> </Grid.ColumnDefinitions> </Grid> </ItemsPanelTemplate> </ItemsControl.ItemsPanel> </ItemsControl> </DataTemplate> When I run the program, I get a NullReferenceException. The beginning of the hilariously long stack trace: at System.Windows.StyleHelper.ApplyAutoAliasRules(OptimizedTemplateContent optimizedTemplateContent, HybridDictionary childIndexFromChildID, FrameworkTemplate frameworkTemplate, FrugalStructList`1& childRecordFromChildIndex, FrugalStructList`1& triggerSourceRecordFromChildIndex, FrugalStructList`1& resourceDependents, HybridDictionary& dataTriggerRecordFromBinding, Boolean& hasInstanceValues) at System.Windows.StyleHelper.ProcessTemplateContent(FrameworkTemplate frameworkTemplate, FrugalStructList`1& childRecordFromChildIndex, FrugalStructList`1& triggerSourceRecordFromChildIndex, FrugalStructList`1& resourceDependents, ItemStructList`1& eventDependents, HybridDictionary& dataTriggerRecordFromBinding, HybridDictionary childIndexFromChildID, Boolean& hasInstanceValues) at System.Windows.StyleHelper.SealTemplate(FrameworkTemplate frameworkTemplate, Boolean& isSealed, FrameworkElementFactory templateRoot, TriggerCollection triggers, ResourceDictionary resources, HybridDictionary childIndexFromChildID, FrugalStructList`1& childRecordFromChildIndex, FrugalStructList`1& triggerSourceRecordFromChildIndex, FrugalStructList`1& containerDependents, FrugalStructList`1& resourceDependents, ItemStructList`1& eventDependents, HybridDictionary& triggerActions, HybridDictionary& dataTriggerRecordFromBinding, Boolean& hasInstanceValues, EventHandlersStore& eventHandlersStore) at System.Windows.FrameworkTemplate.Seal() at System.Windows.StyleHelper.UpdateTemplateCache(FrameworkElement fe, FrameworkTemplate oldTemplate, FrameworkTemplate newTemplate, DependencyProperty templateProperty) at System.Windows.Controls.ContentPresenter.OnTemplateChanged(DependencyObject d, DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) at System.Windows.DependencyObject.OnPropertyChanged(DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) at System.Windows.FrameworkElement.OnPropertyChanged(DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs e) at System.Windows.DependencyObject.NotifyPropertyChange(DependencyPropertyChangedEventArgs args) ...etc. It's not the binding. I still get the error if I explicitly set the value in the style's setter to 0, say. And the error vanishes if I remove the style, though then all of the items end up in column 0. What's going on here? And how do I debug a problem like this?

  • Creating a thematic map

    - by jsharma
This post describes how to create a simple thematic map, just a state population layer, with no underlying map tile layer. The map shows states color-coded by total population. The map is interactive with info-windows and can be panned and zoomed. The sample code demonstrates the following: Displaying an interactive vector layer with no background map tile layer (i.e. purpose and use of the Universe object) Using a dynamic (i.e. defined via the javascript client API) color bucket style Dynamically changing a layer's rendering style Specifying which attribute value to use in determining the bucket, and hence style, for a feature (FoI) The result is shown in the screenshot below. The states layer was defined, and stored in the user_sdo_themes view of the mvdemo schema, using MapBuilder. The underlying table is defined as SQL> desc states_32775  Name                                      Null?    Type ----------------------------------------- -------- ----------------------------  STATE                                              VARCHAR2(26)  STATE_ABRV                                         VARCHAR2(2) FIPSST                                             VARCHAR2(2) TOTPOP                                             NUMBER PCTSMPLD                                           NUMBER LANDSQMI                                           NUMBER POPPSQMI                                           NUMBER ... MEDHHINC NUMBER AVGHHINC NUMBER GEOM32775 MDSYS.SDO_GEOMETRY We'll use the TOTPOP column value in the advanced (color bucket) style for rendering the states layers. The predefined theme (US_STATES_BI) is defined as follows. SQL> select styling_rules from user_sdo_themes where name='US_STATES_BI'; STYLING_RULES -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <?xml version="1.0" standalone="yes"?> <styling_rules highlight_style="C.CB_QUAL_8_CLASS_DARK2_1"> <hidden_info> <field column="STATE" name="Name"/> <field column="POPPSQMI" name="POPPSQMI"/> <field column="TOTPOP" name="TOTPOP"/> </hidden_info> <rule column="TOTPOP"> <features style="states_totpop"> </features> <label column="STATE_ABRV" style="T.BLUE_SERIF_10"> 1 </label> </rule> </styling_rules> SQL> The theme definition specifies that the state, poppsqmi, totpop, state_abrv, and geom columns will be queried from the states_32775 table. The state_abrv value will be used to label the state while the totpop value will be used to determine the color-fill from those defined in the states_totpop advanced style. The states_totpop style, which we will not use in our demo, is defined as shown below. SQL> select definition from user_sdo_styles where name='STATES_TOTPOP'; DEFINITION -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <?xml version="1.0" ?> <AdvancedStyle> <BucketStyle> <Buckets default_style="C.S02_COUNTRY_AREA"> <RangedBucket seq="0" label="10K - 5M" low="10000" high="5000000" style="C.SEQ6_01" /> <RangedBucket seq="1" label="5M - 12M" low="5000001" high="1.2E7" style="C.SEQ6_02" /> <RangedBucket seq="2" label="12M - 20M" low="1.2000001E7" high="2.0E7" style="C.SEQ6_04" /> <RangedBucket seq="3" label="&gt; 20M" low="2.0000001E7" high="5.0E7" style="C.SEQ6_05" /> </Buckets> </BucketStyle> </AdvancedStyle> SQL> The demo defines additional advanced styles via the OM.style object and methods and uses those instead when rendering the states layer.   Now let's look at relevant snippets of code that defines the map extent and zoom levels (i.e. the OM.universe),  loads the states predefined vector layer (OM.layer), and sets up the advanced (color bucket) style. Defining the map extent and zoom levels. function initMap() {   //alert("Initialize map view");     // define the map extent and number of zoom levels.   // The Universe object is similar to the map tile layer configuration   // It defines the map extent, number of zoom levels, and spatial reference system   // well-known ones (like web mercator/google/bing or maps.oracle/elocation are predefined   // The Universe must be defined when there is no underlying map tile layer.   // When there is a map tile layer then that defines the map extent, srid, and zoom levels.      var uni= new OM.universe.Universe(     {         srid : 32775,         bounds : new OM.geometry.Rectangle(                         -3280000, 170000, 2300000, 3200000, 32775),         numberOfZoomLevels: 8     }); The srid specifies the spatial reference system which is Equal-Area Projection (United States). SQL> select cs_name from cs_srs where srid=32775 ; CS_NAME --------------------------------------------------- Equal-Area Projection (United States) The bounds defines the map extent. It is a Rectangle defined using the lower-left and upper-right coordinates and srid. Loading and displaying the states layer This is done in the states() function. The full code is at the end of this post, however here's the snippet which defines the states VectorLayer.     // States is a predefined layer in user_sdo_themes     var  layer2 = new OM.layer.VectorLayer("vLayer2",     {         def:         {             type:OM.layer.VectorLayer.TYPE_PREDEFINED,             dataSource:"mvdemo",             theme:"us_states_bi",             url: baseURL,             loadOnDemand: false         },         boundingTheme:true      }); The first parameter is a layer name, the second is an object literal for a layer config. The config object has two attributes: the first is the layer definition, the second specifies whether the layer is a bounding one (i.e. used to determine the current map zoom and center such that the whole layer is displayed within the map window) or not. The layer config has the following attributes: type - specifies whether is a predefined one, a defined via a SQL query (JDBC), or in a json-format file (DATAPACK) theme - is the predefined theme's name url - is the location of the mapviewer server loadOnDemand - specifies whether to load all the features or just those that lie within the current map window and load additional ones as needed on a pan or zoom The code snippet below dynamically defines an advanced style and then uses it, instead of the 'states_totpop' style, when rendering the states layer. // override predefined rendering style with programmatic one    var theRenderingStyle =      createBucketColorStyle('YlBr5', colorSeries, 'States5', true);   // specify which attribute is used in determining the bucket (i.e. color) to use for the state   // It can be an array because the style could be a chart type (pie/bar)   // which requires multiple attribute columns     // Use the STATE.TOTPOP column (aka attribute) value here    layer2.setRenderingStyle(theRenderingStyle, ["TOTPOP"]); The style itself is defined in the createBucketColorStyle() function. Dynamically defining an advanced style The advanced style used here is a bucket color style, i.e. a color style is associated with each bucket. So first we define the colors and then the buckets.     numClasses = colorSeries[colorName].classes;    // create Color Styles    for (var i=0; i < numClasses; i++)    {         theStyles[i] = new OM.style.Color(                      {fill: colorSeries[colorName].fill[i],                        stroke:colorSeries[colorName].stroke[i],                       strokeOpacity: useGradient? 0.25 : 1                      });    }; numClasses is the number of buckets. The colorSeries array contains the color fill and stroke definitions and is: var colorSeries = { //multi-hue color scheme #10 YlBl. "YlBl3": {   classes:3,                  fill: [0xEDF8B1, 0x7FCDBB, 0x2C7FB8],                  stroke:[0xB5DF9F, 0x72B8A8, 0x2872A6]   }, "YlBl5": {   classes:5,                  fill:[0xFFFFCC, 0xA1DAB4, 0x41B6C4, 0x2C7FB8, 0x253494],                  stroke:[0xE6E6B8, 0x91BCA2, 0x3AA4B0, 0x2872A6, 0x212F85]   }, //multi-hue color scheme #11 YlBr.  "YlBr3": {classes:3,                  fill:[0xFFF7BC, 0xFEC44F, 0xD95F0E],                  stroke:[0xE6DEA9, 0xE5B047, 0xC5360D]   }, "YlBr5": {classes:5,                  fill:[0xFFFFD4, 0xFED98E, 0xFE9929, 0xD95F0E, 0x993404],                  stroke:[0xE6E6BF, 0xE5C380, 0xE58A25, 0xC35663, 0x8A2F04]     }, etc. Next we create the bucket style.    bucketStyleDef = {       numClasses : colorSeries[colorName].classes, //      classification: 'custom',  //since we are supplying all the buckets //      buckets: theBuckets,       classification: 'logarithmic',  // use a logarithmic scale       styles: theStyles,       gradient:  useGradient? 'linear' : 'off' //      gradient:  useGradient? 'radial' : 'off'     };    theBucketStyle = new OM.style.BucketStyle(bucketStyleDef);    return theBucketStyle; A BucketStyle constructor takes a style definition as input. The style definition specifies the number of buckets (numClasses), a classification scheme (which can be equal-ranged, logarithmic scale, or custom), the styles for each bucket, whether to use a gradient effect, and optionally the buckets (required when using a custom classification scheme). • Style, set to Qt application, vanishes, when QDockWindow or QToolBar is being unattached.

    - by Max
Style, set to Qt application, vanishes, when QDockWindow or QToolBar is being unattached. Application is designed to work in Windows XP environment, most of users use it's 'classic' scheme, and application's style is Cleanlooks. It looks fine, until one want to undock dockable window or move toolbar. CLeanlooks vanishes, and it is rather ugly. Is there any workaround to handle this?

  • Recommendations on laptops - long battery life, slim, Windows 7

    - by molecule
Hi, I have been looking at a couple of laptops... The most important requirement is long battery life, slim & light, and runs Windows 7. One that seems to fit the bill is the Sony Vaio Z series laptops. They claim to have long battery life, have some really impressive specs (on paper) and a very nice design. They are not on sale where I am yet but has seen/used them? Second would be the Lenovo Thinkpad IBM x301 For business users, Thinkpad seems to be the way to go. I have also considered Dell Alienware M11x but may not be completely appropriate for business use? What would you recommend with a budget of USD1500-2000?

  • X-ming, Ubuntu apps - getting the Ubuntu style/theme to load

    - by user5402
I am running X-ming on Windows 7 and using putty to ssh into an Ubuntu system. On the Ubuntu system I use the command: $ gnome-terminal & to display a terminal back on the Windows box. When I do this I don't get the standard Ubuntu style, i.e. dark purple background, Mono font, solid cursor (which I've configured in the Gnome Control Center.) Instead I get a very plain style - white background, blinking cursor, very small font. However, if I run gnome-control-center and then click on, say, the Keyboard icon, the terminal window will be reconfigured with the Ubuntu style with my customizations (e.g. block cursor vs. blinking cursor.) Just starting one of the control applets seems to trigger this style change. My question is: How can I trigger this style change more directly - without having to launch the Gnome Control center and launching one of the configuration applets?

  • Word 2010 Style Sets and Multilevel Lists

    - by Stevia
In Word 2010, how can you create quick style sets that include multilevel lists (include being the operative word)? As background, I have created a set of styles for a long agreement form and assigned them to levels in a certain custom multilevel list. I then also saved those styles as a quick style set called Long Agreement. I have saved those styles in my normal template. That all works fine for assigning styles to a Long Agreement. What I'd like to do next is create a second style set called Short Agreement. I will assign certain styles to that style set. The issue is that I don't see how to tie a different custom multilevel list to those Short Agreement styles. When I click on Change Styles, Short Agreement [style set], and I apply those styles, how can I get it to automatically use the multilevel list that I assign to short agreements?
