• Documenting a REST interface with a flowchart

  Does anybody have suggestions on creating a flowchart representation of a REST-style web interface? In the interest of supplying thorough documentation to co-developers, I've been toying around in dia modeling the interface for modifying and generating a product resource: This particular system begins to act differently with user authentication/resource counts, so before I make modifications, I'm looking for some clarification: Complexity: how would you simplify the overall structure to make this easier to read? Display Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a page? Manual Operation Symbol: is this appropriate for representing a user action like a button click? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My apologies for the re-post. The main stackexchange site suggested this question was better presented on programmers.

• Unable to connect to wireless network

  A real newbie here. Just downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, put on USB stick and have booted it on my other PC after modifying the boot sequence to boot from USB before hard drive where Windows XP lives. Have no problems with Windows and my wireless but not with Ubuntu. The PC is a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. According to Windows XP , the wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, my IP address is 192.168.0.193, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, assigned by DHCP, SSID is HOME , type 802.11 and default gateway is 192.168.0.1. Ok, back to booting from USB and TRY option, I am Editing Network connections, I have created/configured "Wireless connection 1" with SSID of HOME and the only other thing I have changed is on the "Editing IPV4 routes for Wireless connection 1 I have enterred 192.168.0.193 , netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 Anyways , no go. • Are there any good guides for making mods for Minecraft?

  I've been coding in Java for 5 months at work now, and having past experience with programming in other languages, modifying existing code at Uni etc. I feel like I want to get started on (read: continue learning to program by) modding with minecraft. I know what I need, but not exactly how to do so. I once saw some good guides on the minecraft forum, but they all explained how to write in java, hows different classes in the code work etc. I'm more interested in how you decompile the code, write your own separate from the main 'trunk' of minecraft and then package it to install with a tool like 'Magic Loader'. My issue with these guides is that they always relied on being in windows, but I'm primarily a linux user, and the guides on the forums only seemed to assume you were on a Windows box. So is there a good 'walkthrough' for modding for Minecraft? Especially one where it assumes or at least allows for the fact you are in linux?

• Using source code with no license

  I've recently come across a publicly viewable project on Github that has no license associated with it. In this repo, there is a file with the logic and most of the code needed to work as a piece of a project I am working on. Not verbatim, but about 60% of it I'd like to use with various modifications. Once my code base is a little bit more stable, I plan to release what I've done under the WTFPL License. I've emailed the repo owner, and so far have not gotten a reply. I know I have the rights to fork the repo, but if I release a stripped down and modified version of the other project's file with mine, under the WTFPL, am I infringing on copyrights? Per Github's Terms of Service, by submitted a project on Github and making it viewable to the public, you are allowing other users to see and fork your project. Doesn't say anything about modifying, distributing, or using the fork. And at what point of modification to the original does it become owned by me?

  As a post VS2010 SP1 installation activity, I am recompiling all my open source projects. The first is XHTMLFIX at http://xhtmlfix.codeplex.com/ This LGPL project has simple fixes to ASP.NET 2.0/4.0 to achieve XHTML compliance as measured by the W3C tests at http://validator.w3.org/ The XHTML project shows as untrue the commonly held belief that MVP or MVC are necessary for producing XHTML compliant web pages. Incidentally the other supposed advantage of MVP and MVC over web forms of easier testing is also very dubious as web forms can be tested by systems such as Selenium or WaTiN. I have used NUnitASP (alas sadly discontinued) with web forms and found it be more effective than unit testing MVP. Now if you prefer the MVP and / or MVC approach over Web forms then fine, that is your preferance. Now if you can find an example where ASP.NET 4.0 Web forms properly written do not produce XHTML compliant markup, I would be glad of your example and will look at ways of modifying the markup to be XHTML compliant.

  I am planning on building a web app with many different public-facing HTTP servers; each of which will have Google Analytics (GA) installed on them. I'd like to create a "dashboard" app that consolidates the GA data into one screen. I've been perusing the documentation for this so-called GA API, but I can't tell what the end result of the GA API is: Does the GA API allow me to do exactly what I am looking for it to do? Or... Does the GA API do something entirely different (like allow me to share my data with Google+ or something else weird) Since an API can be used to CRUD any kind of data, I guess I'm asking which way the GA API goes: is it for querying (reading) data from 1+ server instances, or is it for modifying data on those servers or somewhere else? • Dynamic navigation mesh changes

  I'm currently trying to convert from grids to navigation meshes for pathfinding, since grids are either too coarse for accurate navigation, or too fine to be useful for object tracking. While my map is fairly static, and the navigation mesh could be created in advance, this is somewhat of a tower defense game, where objects can be placed to block paths, so I need a way to recalculate portions of the navigation mesh to allow pathing around them. Is there any existing documentation on good ways to do this? I'm still very new to navigation meshes, so the prospect of modifying them to cut or fill holes sounds daunting.

• Open Source License that prevents re-selling

  I have an open source project that is a add-in to TFS (ie it is for developers and those using TFS.) It is currently using the GPL. But it occurs to me that the GPL does not really represent what I am trying to do with my license. I want my code to be free to everyone who wants to use it. And if you modify it and use it then that is great too. You should not have to open source your modifications. But I would like to block someone from building my code and selling it. Or modifying it and selling it. (Anyone that wants to do that should have to negotiate a separate license with me.) Is there an open source license that prevents re-selling, but allows full non-vending use for a person/company that downloads it?

• Tiled perlin/value noise texture with (2^n)+1 size

  Actually what I have in mind is value noise I think, but what I am going to ask applies to both of them. It is known that if you want to produce tiled texture by using the perlin/value noise, the size of the texture should be specified as the power of 2 (2^n). Without any modifications to the algorithm when you use the size of (2^n)+1 the texture cannot be tiled anymore, so I am wondering whether it is possible (by modifying the algorithm somehow) to generate such tiling texture with the size of (2^n)+1.   The idea is to take old games without modifying them, but have the graphics card apply a series of filters to their output before sending them to the monitor. A very crude example would be to take a game that has a resolution of 640x480 and do: Increase the resolution to 1280x960 Apply a blur (low pass filter) Apply a sharpen (1 + high pass filter) These steps may not necessarily be the best to improve the visuals of an old game, but there are a lot of techniques that are well-known in image processing for this purpose. The question is, do the (NVidia) graphics cards give the ability to load a program that modifies the screen before sending it to the monitor? If so, how are they called and what terminology should I use to search? I would be comfortable with doing the programming myself if this ability is part of a library. Also, would the solution be different between Windows and Linux? If so, either is fine, since most of the games are probably runnable by wine.

• Setting umask globally

  I am using a private user group setup, i.e. a user foo's home directory is owned by foo:foo, not foo:users. For this to work, I need to set the umask to 002 globally. After a quick grep -RIi umask /etc/*, it seemed for a moment that modifying the UMASK entry in /etc/login.defs should do the trick. It does, too -- but only for console logins. If I log in to my desktop, and open a terminal there, I still get to see the default umask 022. Same goes for files created from apps started through the menu. Apparently, the display manager (or whatever X11 component responsible) does source some different setting than a console login does, and damned if I could tell which one it is. (I tried changing the setting in /etc/init.d/rc, and no, it did not help.) How / where do I set umask globally, so that the X11 desktop environment gets the memo as well?

• How to reverse file ownership and permission settings

  I installed LAMP and WordPress on my system a week ago. Since I couldn't create Child Themes in WordPress and work with PHP folders for my other projects collocated in var/www without using Nautilus I wanted to solve the permissions issue. I hoped to bring a solution carrying out the commands on this page for my WordPress folder: http://wiki.apache.org/httpd/FileSystemPermissions. This allowed me to play with any file in the folder like creating and modifying .css files through WP Admin, etc. But after a restart I discovered that I can't change DNS settings of my network connections in the list anymore because it is asking me the root password and even though I enter the password it doesn't let me do the action giving "insufficient privileges" error. Can you help me correct the mistake I possibily made during the configuration and, maybe, configure again the permission and ownership settings for var/www/somefolder as it is adviced to be configured under general circumstances? • Restoring Grub after Kubuntu installation

  I installed Kubuntu on top of my existing Ubuntu 12.04 (64 bit) installation. During Kubuntu installation, I chose lightdm as my default display manager (instead of kdm). Now after rebooting, the Grub has a new color (gray instead of default purplish) and the screen while booting is gray (instead of purplish). I am curious if it is possible to change this grub behavior without removing Kubuntu. I did find a lot of discussion about modifying grub themes but they were not very useful because I do not know what is the default unity grub theme. I did reinstall grub but it didn't change anything. I tried the Grub Customizer but couldn't succeed. Thanks in advance!

• Upgrade from ubuntu 9.10 to 11.10

  Our project definition is to develop CUDA programs. Our workstation has CUDA 3.1 installed in Ubuntu 9.10. We need to program in CUDA 5.0 which can be installed only on ubuntu 11.10 or 12.04. We tried upgrading but were faced with many problems as 9.10 is no longer supported. So we chose to proceed with a clean installation. Since we have a shared workstation, we need to back up the settings. We decided to use clonezilla for cloning the system. Booting from the LiveCD showed an unexpected error. Another option was to install 11.10 in an external HDD by partitioning it, but Gparted could not be installed and terminated with the error "installArchives() failed" which we couldn't solve even after modifying the sources.list. We are stuck either ways. Have no idea how to proceed and we have a deadline to submit our CUDA program. Any suggestion is welcome.

• DHCP won't start / subnetting

  I recently changed the IP address on an Ubuntu 12.04 server I have in my lab, which is running isc-dhcp-server. After doing so and modifying the dhcpd.conf file, my dhcp service would not start. I basically used the same configuration, except I modified everything to use /25 scopes rather than /24. When I try to start / restart the service, I see the following: MY@ubuntuserver:~$ sudo service isc-dhcp-server restart stop: Unknown instance: isc-dhcp-server start/running, process 20918 It looks like it starts, but it isn't actually running and Webmin states that the DHCP service is not running. So my question is, does isc-dhcp-server support subnetting (CIDR) style scopes, or must they be class A / B / C scopes (doesn't seem likely)? I've double checked the interface reference (this is a VM with only one defined eth0 interface) and everything else I can thing of.

• How can I teleport seamlessly, without using interpolation?

  I've been implementing Bukkit plugin for creating toggleable in-game warping areas that will teleport any catched entity to other similar area. I was going to implement concept of non-Euclidean maze using this plugin, but, unfortunately, I've discovered that doing Entity.teleport() causes client to interpolate movement while teleporting, so player slides towards target like Enderman and receives screen updates, so for a split second all underground stuff is visible. While for "just teleport me where I want" usage this is just fine, it ruins whole idea of seamless teleporting, as player can clearly see when transfer happened even without need to look at debug screen. Is there possibility to somehow disable interpolating while teleporting without modifying client, or maybe prevent client from updating screen while it's being teleported?

  Possible Duplicate: What to do with random pages after a 301 redirect? Currently, we are working on modifying the contents of a website of one of our products. Since we are re-positioning the product, we would like to delete roughly 50% (around 200) of the pages of the website. My questions, in terms of SEO are: Would it have a negative effect if Google suddenly sees the large page drop? Is it OK to provide a 301 to the start page of the website for all removed pages?

• How do you resolve the error "E: Unmet dependencies." ?

  I did try apt-get -f install but that didn't work either. The problem appeared after installing a modified version of libapache2-mod-wsgi. I modified the package dependencies because, as you can see from the package details link, it depends on python 3. A version of python is required but not version 3 necessarily and I didn't want to install version 3. There's bug #672901 that describes the problem. So, modifying the package dependencies worked but now that I try to install another package I get the error above. How can I get rid of it?

  I am developing a web app and I have currently written the entire website in html/js/css and on the backend I have servlets that host some RESTFUL services. All the presentation logic is done through getting json objects and modifying the view through javascript. • How to maintain a file's 'last modified' date ?

  I'm copying files and folders over from one filesystem to another (both are ext3) via cp in the terminal. The 'date modified' on all of the files are being changed to the current time although I am not modifying the folder or the files. I'd like for them to keep their existing 'last modified date' which vary within the past 5 years. I am not interested in changing them to a specific date as described this previous question, but to maintain the existing 'last modified' date. I'm using 12.04.
