• WinForms programing - Modal and Non-Modal forms problem

  I have a problem with modality of the forms under C#.NET. Let's say I have main form #0 (see the image below). This form represents main application form, where user can perform various operations. However, from time to time, there is a need to open additional non-modal form to perform additional main application functionality supporting tasks. Let's say this is form #1 in the image. On this #1 form there might be opened few additional modal forms on top of each other (#2 form in the image), and at the end, there is a progress dialog showing a long operation progress and status, which might take from few minutes up to few hours. The problem is that the main form #0 is not responsive until you close all modal forms (#2 in the image). I need that the main form #0 would be operational in this situation. However, if you open a non-modal form in form #2, you can operate with both modal #2 form and newly created non modal form. I need the same behavior between the main form #0 and form #1 with all its child forms. Is it possible? Or am I doing something wrong? Maybe there is some kind of workaround, I really would not like to change all ShowDialog calls to ShowDialog...

Can modern printers print white and if not, why not? Read on as we explore color theory, printer design choices, and why white is the foundation of the printing process. Can the CMYK color model generate white color? Printers use CMYK color mode. What will happen if I try to print a white colored image (rabbit) on a black paper with my printer? Will I get any image on the paper? Does the CMYK color model have room for white? The Answer SuperUser contributor Darth Android offers some insight into the CMYK process: You will not get anything on the paper with a basic CMYK inkjet or laser printer. The CMYK color mixing is subtractive, meaning that it requires the base that is being colored to have all colors (i.e., White) So that it can create color variation through subtraction: White - Cyan - Yellow = Green White - Yellow - Magenta = Red White - Cyan - Magenta = Blue White is represented as 0 cyan, 0 yellow, 0 magenta, and 0 black – effectively, 0 ink for a printer that simply has those four cartridges. This works great when you have white media, as “printing no ink” simply leaves the white exposed, but as you can imagine, this doesn’t work for non-white media. If you don’t have a base color to subtract from (i.e., Black), then it doesn’t matter what you subtract from it, you still have the color Black. [But], as others are pointing out, there are special printers which can operate in the CMYW color space, or otherwise have a white ink or toner. These can be used to print light colors on top of dark or otherwise non-white media. You might also find my answer to a different question about color spaces helpful or informative. Given that the majority of printer media in the world is white and printing pure white on non-white colors is a specialty process, it’s no surprise that home and (most) commercial printers alike have no provision for it. • Replacing characters in a non well-formed XML body

  In a (Java) code that I'm working on, I sometimes deal with a non well-formed XML (represented as a Java String), such as: <root> <foo> bar & baz < quux </foo> </root> Since this XML will eventually need to be unmarshalled (using JAXB), obviously this XML as is will throw exception upon unmarshalling. What's the best way to replace the & and the < to its character entities? For &, it's as easy as: xml.replaceAll("&", "&amp;") However, for the < symbol, it's a bit tricky since obviously I don't want to replace the < that's used for the XML tag opening 'bracket'. Other than scanning the string and manually replacing < in the XML body with &lt;, what other option can you suggest?

• Non Blocking Keyboard on WinCE accessing the virtual keyboard

  Hello Guys, I am desperately looking for a solution that enables me to read keyboard events in a non blocking way. These Keyboard events are generated by a VIRTUAL KEYBOARD that comes with the WinCE device. I have a console application running in C++, where the user is asked to navigate via 'ESC', 'U' and other characters through the menu. I first tried to use fread and stdin and realised that it is blocking call and waits for a carriage return. Then I tried to hook up to the windows message WM_KEYUP, but I never recieve this windows message. Furthermore I tried to use QtGUI together with the event QKeyEvent, but I never recieve any event. I wonder if it is in general possible to recieve non-blocking keyboard events on a WinCE device. I would be glad if you have any suggestions! Cheers, Jan

• Convert non-breaking spaces to spaces in Ruby

  I have cases where user-entered data from an html textarea or input is sometimes sent with \u00a0 (non-breaking spaces) instead of spaces when encoded as utf-8 json. I believe that to be a bug in Firefox, as I know that the user isn't intentionally putting in non-breaking spaces instead of spaces. There are also two bugs in Ruby, one of which can be used to combat the other. For whatever reason \s doesn't match \u00a0 However [^[:print:]] (which definitely should not match) and \xC2\xA0 both will match, but I consider those to be less-than-ideal ways to deal with the issue. Are there other recommendations for getting around this issue?

I want to read the file but somehow i can't make the chinese characters displayed correctly. • Are Fortran control characters (carriage control) still implemented in compilers?

  In the book Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, there is much talk given to the importance of recognizing that the first column in a format statement is reserved for control characters. I've also seen control characters referred to as carriage control on the internet. To avoid confusion, by control characters, I refer to the characters "1, a blank (i.e. \s), 0, and +" as having an effect on the vertical spacing of output when placed in the first column (character) of a FORMAT statement. Also, see this text-only web page written entirely in fixed-width typeface : Fortran carriage-control (because nothing screams accuracy and antiquity better than prose in monospaced font). I found this page and others like it to be not quite clear. According to Fortran 95/2003 for Scientists and Engineers, failure to recall that the first column is reserved for carriage control can lead to horrible unintended output. Paraphrasing Dave Barry, type the wrong character, and nuclear missiles get fired at Norway. However, when I attempt to adhere to this stern warning, I find that gfortran has no idea what I'm talking about. Allow me to illustrate my point with some example code. • How do I calculate the cost of printing a given page?

  I have seen questions like How much does a square inch of ink cost and How much more will a high-dpi image cost to print?, but mine isn't asking neither about a specific case, nor about how much something costs, as that would depend on the toner, for example. Rather, I was wondering how should I go about calculating the cost of printing a given page. Note that "given page" should be seen as a sort of x, i.e. the answer should be applicable in any case; I'd like this question to provide a good reference for those who want to calculate this cost. What should be taken into consideration? The cost of a single page (the paper only) is easily checkable, since you divide the cost of the whole package for the number of pages in the package itself. But how do I calculate the cost of the ink/toner? Which could translate to: how do I calculate the Ink Density1 for a given printer? I know it depends on quality of the printer itself, the type, the quality of the image being printed, the very nature of what I'm going to print, etc. But again, the focus of my question is not on the variables of this case, but rather the constants, hoping the math simile works for this case too. 1: Total amount of ink in one area of the page.

• Why does HP Update at remote system trigger RDP printing at local system?

  This is obscure. When connected with RDP to another system that has HP Update installed on it, either directly running the HP Update or having the notification pop up to ask if you want to run HP Update causes the local system to try to print something to peculiarly-chosen-local-printer. Case 1: Desktop Win 7 Ult system RDP connected to HP Laptop Win 7 Ult system. When HP Update runs on the laptop a dialog for XPS Writer Save As... appears on Desktop system. Even if you put in a name, nothing gets generated and the dialog repeats. And repeats. Until you (a) close the RDP connection and (b) clean out the queued entries. If the HP Update pops up the request to run the update and you are not at the desk when this happens, there can be dozens of queued requests for this bogus printing. NOTE: the XPS Writer is not selected as a default printer on either system. Case 2: (Different) HP Laptop Win 7 Ult system RDP connected to XP Pro "brand X" desktop system but with HP printer drivers installed. If the request to run HP Update notification pops on the XP system, dozens of attempts to print, in this case to a Versa Check Printer driver, are queued. Dismissing the HP request, closing RDP, and cleaning out the queue are required to stop this. NOTE: the Versa Check Writer is not selected as a default printer on either system. THE QUESTION: What the heck is going on here? Some kind of scripting or COM activity that is misdirected?

  Hey everyone, My database contains information extracted from an external feed. In this raw text feed, the following text is used in place of special characters: & - &amp; ' - &39; é - &eacute; I extract some of this text to form URLs. For example, a URL that I construct from data containing these characters might look like this: http://url.com/search/?brand=Franklin&Hédgson's I use the GET variables in this URL to construct further lookups, which leads to a couple of specific problems: The é and ' characters are sent back to MySQL as they appear, and so they don't trigger any results (because the characters take the full HTML form in the database text). The & within the URL separates the variable, and the GET returns only Franklin, when it should return the whole string. Are there any straightforward ways of dealing with this? Thanks.

• finding a string of random characters (with possible errors) within a large string of random charact

  I am trying to search a large string w/o spaces for a smaller string of characters. using regex I can easily find perfect matches but I can't figure out how to find partial matches. by partial matches i mean one or two extra characters in the string or one or two characters that have been changed, or one of each. the first and last characters will always match though. this would be similar to a spell checker but there are no spaces and the strings dont contain actual words, just random hex digits. i figured a way to find the string if there are no extra characters using indexOf(string.charAt(0)) and indexOf(charAt(string.length()-1) and looping through the characters between the two indexes. but this can be problematic when dealing with randomized characters because of the possibility of finding the first and last characters at the correct spacing but none of the middle characters matching. i've been scratching my head for hours on this issue. any ideas?

  Few days ago I faced a problem with printing in new Silverlight 4 RC. When you try to dynamically load image (in code behind) and print it, it doesn't work. Paper sheet is blank. Problem XAML file: <Image x:Name="image" Stretch="None" /> XAML.cs: image.Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(imageUri, UriKind.RelativeOrAbsolute));  Print: var pd = new PrintDocument();   pd.PrintPage += (s, args) =>     {       args.PageVisual = image;     };   pd.Print(); Result: Blank paper.   Solution What you need to do, is forced Silverlight engine to load that image before printing start. To accomplish that I proposed simply checking PixelWith value. Your code will ask about PixelWidth of image so it will have to be loaded.   Ever since 10.04, I can't print to an HP laserjet p3005. I'm even using an entirely different computer now with a fresh install of 10.10. I've tried with and without the latest hplip. Recently, sometimes I can get it to print a few things, but eventually it always fails (usually when printing a pdf from the document viewer (also doesn't work with adobe pdf reader)). Sometimes it fails so bad the printer gives an error saying it needs to be turned off and on again. I can't seem to find a fix anywhere, I've googled all over the past year and tried every fix I could find. It does say that the /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp has failed. It also doesn't make a difference if I create the printer using hp-setup or ubuntu's own printing control panel. I delete and re-create the printer, no difference eventually. I use the default printer settings or custom settings, no difference. I can print perfectly find to a networked printer at home - an HP officejet 6310. It seems to be networked HP printers at work that I can't print to anymore (except occasionally right after re-installing the printer driver). What's the recommended way to install HP printer drivers and reset or clean out everything from before. Or where are the right logs to read or debug commands to do to find out what may be the real cause of the printing problems?

• How to customize the printing while using Window.print ?

  i want to print a invoice and i use a print.css by media=print and when i change the current stylesheet to print.css i could able to view what i should be printing without the titles and content left aligned. But still while i'm printing there is space in the top and left and its taking up whole a4 sheet and also the whole width of the page.. But i've defined a body width of just 550 px. While i view to print preview, it takes the whole width instead of taking up 1/3 of the width.. • C++ Printing: Printer jams, what am I doing wrong?

  I have a problem with printing in C++. As far as I know, this code used to work on my previous printer, but ever since I got another one (an HP C7280) it started giving problems. Whenever I try to print anything, even an empty page, the page JAMS the printer. I have to manualy remove the page from the printer. I have no clue why this is happening. Am I doing something wrong, is it a driver problem, are there better ways to print in C++? I am using Windows 7 64 bit, but this problem also presented itself when I was using Windows Vista 64 bit.   I am looking to print using C#, micorsoft visual studio, asp.net. The goal:- I am trying to print all pages in a fax document. Format:- The fax document is received as a single .tiff file with multiple pages. What needs to be done:- I need to iterate each page in the .tiff image and print them all. // This function will iterate all pages, one at a time. // protected void PrintAll_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { // counts number of pages in the fax document.// int number = _FaxPages.Count; // for loop to iterate through each page. // for (int i = 0; i < number; i++) { string _FaxId = Page.Request["FaxId"]; _PageIndex = i; imgFax.ImageUrl = "ShowFax.ashx?n=" + _FaxId + "&f=" + _PageIndex + "&mw=750"; PrintAll.Attributes.Add("onclick", "return printing()"); } } and In my Java script I have: function printing() { window.print(); } Now the issues are: <1 The function only prints one page (the very last page of the tiff file)....and it prints the entire window and not just the embedded .tiff image in the entire web browser window. Any Ideas of how to go about just printing the .tiff embedded image instead of the entire web browser window. <2 Although my for loop iterates through the pages. The print function is only called after the loop has iterated through all the pages and stopped on the final page (say page 6/6). And then it only prints that last page (along with the rest of the contents on the browser window). This is not what I want to happen... I dont want to print all the excess material on the browser window such as buttons, links etc... I just want the embedded .tiff image from the browser window.

• I have a stacktrace and limit of 250 characters for a bug report

  I'm developing an xbox indie game and as a last-resort I have a try...catch encompassing everything. At this point if an exception is raised I can get the user to send me a message through the xbox however the limit is 250 characters. How can I get the most value out of my 250 characters? I don't want to do any encoding / compressing at least initially. Any solution to this problem could be compressed if needed as a second step anyway. I'm thinking of doing things like turning this: at EasyStorage.SaveDevice.VerifyIsReady() at EasyStorage.SaveDevice.Save(String containerName, String fileName) into this (drop the repeated namespace/class and method parameter names): at EasyStorage.SaveDevice.VerifyIsReady() at ..Save(String, String) Or maybe even just including the inner-most method, then only line numbers up the stack etc. TL;DR: Given an exception with a stacktrace how would you get the most useful debugging infromation out of 250 characters? (It will be a .net exception/stacktrace)

• HP Printer scrolls "printing" forever - but nothing happens

  I got a used HP Officejet 7130 all-in-one printer. I tried printing a text document, and it shows up in the queue (and says "printing"), and the printer display says "Printing" "Press Cancel to cancel job." - and it cyles that text forever, but nothing ever happens (after a couple of initial quiet noises.) I tried to print a test page from the printer, and I get the same "printing" message. I checked the hp website, and this problem is not on their list. (They are expecting a queue problem, error message, etc.) I did initially get a message that it needs new ink cartridges, but I pressed to get past that. It's supposed to try to print anyway. I don't want to buy ink cartridges for a printer that is broken. When I press it cancels correctly.

  Hi, I wanted a non recursive approach to the problem of generating combination of certain set of characters or numbers. So, given a subset k of numbers n, generate all the possible combination n!/k!(n-k)! The recursive method would give a combination, given the previous one combination. A non recursive method would generate a combination of a given value of loop index i. I approached the problem with this code: Tested with n = 4 and k = 3, and it works, but if I change k to a number 3 it does not work. Is it due to the fact that (n-k)! in case of n = 4 and k = 3 is 1. and if k 3 it will be more than 1?   Hi, I have text in Turkish language: "selam günaydin". Doctrine searchable converts it to keywords in table: -selam -guenaydin So "guenaydin" was saved in table as keyword "günaydin" so when somebody writes in search "günaydin" he gets nothing - what can I do?

• Sed non greedy curly braces match

  I have a string in a file a.txt {moslate}alho{/moslate}otra{moslate}a{/moslate} a need to get the string otra using sed. With this regex sed 's|{moslate}.*{/moslate}||g' a.txt a get no output at all but when i add a ? to the regex s|{moslate}.*?{/moslate}||g a.txt (I've read somewhere that it makes the regex non-greedy) i get no match at all, i mean a get the following output {moslate}alho{/moslate}otra{moslate}a{/moslate} How can i get the required output using sed?
