Does the cron which comes with OS X log its actions anywhere?
I'm not looking for output of any particular cron job, but rather log of what cron is doing. On a couple linux machines I've checked, there's /var/log/cron which has contents like:
Apr 26 11:00:01 localhost crond[27755]: (root) CMD (/root/bin/mysql-backup)
Apr 26 11:01:01 localhost…
I know of 2 ways to search for any file in your machine using Finder (some say it's Spotlight) and no Terminal.
To prevent answers / comments about Terminal, I consider it either for scripting something or as last resource. It's not practical for lots of usages. For instance, if you want to find something to attach to a mail, or embed in iTunes…
In a thread on this forum there is an interesting solution on how to open a duplicate of an already open Finder window with the help of an AppleScript:
How do you duplicate current open Finder view?
With the new tabbed Finder in OS X 10.9 Mavericks, I am wondering if there is a way to implement an AppleScript that opens the duplicate in a new…
ok, so I introduced a Mac laptop to my home network of Kubuntu hosts and Fedora servers. Currently I don't have NIS or LDAP setup (I got only 2 users) and I just manually setup the UID/GID on the hosts. I would like to run the following command on my Macbook:
dscl . -change /Users/me UniqueID 501 1000
dscl . -change /Users/me PrimaryGroupID…
We have a Windows server, with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6 clients. On the server are some Automator workflows with custom icons stored in external resoruce fork files, like this:
foo.wflow
._foo.wflow
The custom icons are only visible to the 10.5 clients.
The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death.
I use an early 2008 iMac 24".
I've tried the basic things, unplugging/turning off accessories, trying to boot from the install disk, reseting pram, etc, etc.
Still no…
When I try to run Firefox 3.6 or 4 beta I get a message saying:
Profile Missing
Your Firefox profile cannot be loaded. It may be missing or inaccessible.
I have tried running the profile manger from the command line using:
/Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -ProfileManager
I get the same message in the popup, but I…
My SSH sessions take a very long time to initiate. This applies for logins with and without passwords, interactive and non-interactive. I have tried setting 'GSSAPIAuthentication no' and 'IPQoS 0x00' on the client side, and 'UseDNS no' on the server side, but no dice. I'm really stumped and frustrated. The worst part is that it SFTP…
In Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) Apple has replaced good old SMB support. Now I can't auto connect to my shared (SMB) network drives. Workarounds? Or Impossible?
In OS X Snow Leopard, I could automatically connect my Ubuntu (SMB) shared network drives with auto_smb / auto_master (autofs configuration in /private/etc/).
I made three mount…
I can't remember how I installed git a while back....but now it's living in /usr/bin/git and needs to be updated.
I don't care how (pre-compiled or build my own) but what I don't want is another version existing somewhere else. i vaguely remember curl(ing) down the source & compiling it. but not positive. anyway, what's the…
My question is essentially the same as this one, but for OS X 10.6 instead of Windows 7.
I would like to run a program whenever I connect to my home wireless network (not the one at work or university). I'm sure there's a program that does this, but unfortunately my google-fu isn't strong today.
I was wondering if someone could help me troubleshoot this issue.
I have a handful of VPNs set up on my MacBook (Snow Leopard) which I know are working, but today when I tried to use them I get the following error in all cases:

I have not needed to use any VPN for a while but they…
I wanted to install Symfony on Mac OS X Lion. Apparently, as MAMP was already installed on my computer, there was a problem with the "timezone" field in the php.ini file. I can't remember exactly the error but basically, Symfony installation required a timezone like "Europe/Paris" but MAMP apparently changed that part.

When I log into my mac on 10.6.3 I get the following error in my console
29/05/2010 19:11:43 prometheus rpc.statd[109] Warning Failed to contact host aphrodite.lan: RPC: Unknown host
Now I know that rpc is trying to contact a non existent host but what I can't figure out is why and how to stop it.
Any ideas?

When you enable FileVault's full-disk encryption, it asks for the password of each account on the system to allow every user to decrypt the disk. You can simply choose not to have a user enter their password, and they will not be able to decrypt the disk. However, if you create…
I am using Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2. I cannot find the "Create Network" menuitem in the WiFi icon menu in the menubar. It was there before when I was using Lion. It started missing since I upgraded to Mountain Lion Developer Preview 1.
By the way, is there any other…
How do you create a keyboard shortcut that activates fast user switching (i.e. brings up the login window) in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?
I'm trying to emulate the Windows Start+L keyboard combination, which I miss from my time using Windows.
The other night I updated my iTunes to the latest version (through Software Update) when I came to turn on my computer I was greeted with the dreaded white screen of death.

Here's my problem:
I use Google Chrome as my web browser on MacOS X Snow Leopard. I am a keyboard shortcut addict, and I use QuickSilver to create keyboard shortcuts for anything I can. One of the most common things that I do is to open a new web browser window. But I use…
My hard drive on my macbook pro crashed the other day and I got a replacement from Apple with a vanilla snow leopard install. Upon returning home I used the Migration Utility to restore my previous data and configuration. So far, so good! Everything looks and works…
Here's the scenario:

I am trying to connect to the PC from the Mac. IT ONLY works if I turn off the firewall in Windows.
I tried to trace the port and connection it was using, it appears to be…
