• harddrive problem (usb external)

  Hey guys I am using a Maxtor One Touch 3 given to my by my uncle. It is connected through USB2.0 When I plug it in, XP installs it and says "the device is ready to use". But it dosnt show up on my computer. It dosn't even show up in disk mangement. I then install Acronis Disk Director (which detects it) but marks it as offline. if i try to change it to online, nothing happens. (actually the lights on the HD blink - meaning communication and goes back into offline mode). The lights on the HD return to a solid which mean "working properly". I was aware of most of those in back of the mind, but when I needed to use one, I had to dig it out either from SQL server help file or from google. So, I thought I will list some of the functions which performs some common operations in SQL server. Hope it will be helpful to you all. Len (' String_Expression' ) - returns the length of input String_Expression. Example - Select Len('Vipin') Output - 5 Left ( 'String_Expression', int_characters ) - returns int_characters characters from the left of the String_Expression.     Example - Select Left('Vipin',3), Right('Vipin',3) Output -  Vip,  Pin  LTrim ( 'String_Expression' ) - removes spaces from left of the input 'String_Expression'  RTrim ( 'String_Expression' ) - removes spaces from right of the input 'String_Expression' Note - To removes spaces from both ends of the string_expression use Ltrim and RTrim in conjunction Example - Select LTrim(' Vipin '), RTrim(' Vipin ') , LTrim ( RTrim(' Vipin ')) Output - 'Vipin ' , ' Vipin' , 'Vipin' (Single quote marks ' ' are not part of the SQL output, it's just been included to demonstrate the presence of space at the end of string.)   I bought Dell Vostro 3360 notebook with Windows 7 It has 128 GB SSD hard disk, it is already has 4 partitions: Dell partition, Recovery partition, OS partition, Hibernate partition. Here is screenshot (Russian language, but I made some marks): I want to split OS partition, because I need c:\ and d:\ . Reason is that I have a lot of difficulties with administration mode on c:. So I tried to split OS partition but I already have 4 partitions. Can I remove hibernate partition without consequences? I have Hibernate disabled in settings, but I have hiberfil.sys file on c:\ If I can remove it, how can I do this, I can't do this with standard GUI disk managment tool

• Monit send alert to nagios NSCA

  I want to monitor a web with monit check host function and if the site is down then alert it to nagios nsca so it sends the info to nagios and nagios marks it as status OK or host down for example. The problem is that how can I make the monit alert fuction send the info to nagios nsca. I am not sure that this will work, but what I came up with is: set alert exec 'echo -e "nagios nsca format" | /usr/local/nagios/bin/send_nsca -H serveraddress -c /usr/local/nagios/etc/send_nsca.cfg' Would this work and is it the best solution to work with or can it be done some other way?

• Mail sent from local Postfix marked as "possible phishing" in Outlook

  Hi folks, Sorry for the newbie question--this is not my area of expertise by a long shot. I work at a small development shop and we finally got around to doing code reviews. (Yay!) I set up an instance of Review Board -- an open-source code review tool -- on one of our local servers but it doesn't seem to like talking to our hosted Exchange server to send notification emails. I decided to just install Postfix on that same box and send mail from localhost, which is working much more reliably, but Outlook disables all links in the email announcements and marks it as possible phishing. What is making these emails look suspicious and what can I change? Would the best thing be to figure out how to relay to Exchange from Postfix? Thanks!

• 7.0.1 and Photoshop openGL requirements

  Hi, I'm running Workstation 7.0.1 on a 64-bit Linux host, with a Vista guest, and the Aero theme works a treat - full marks for getting that working! However, when running Photoshop there are some operations (like interactive image rotation) that seem to require graphics support that VMWare doesn't have - attempting to do these operations returns an error that the functionality "only works with OpenGL enabled windows". It seems that it needs OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 which I gather are supported under Workstation 7 - do I need to put in additional settings of some kind? I've updated to the right version of VMWare Tools, and the video driver is listed as "VMWare SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)". I see that in 6.5 there was an option to switch between the beta WDDM driver and the SVGAII driver, but I assume the features of both of these would have been merged into the standard driver in 7.0? • KVM Switch for a mac and a Windows (XP or 7) machine to share VDU

  Have a MacPro (snow leopard) connected to an (windows standard) Asus 25" monitor via a DVI--VGA adapter. Now the boss wants me to work from home, so I want to share my Asus display with a Windows XP laptop. No doubt once my wife sees this, she will want to do the same thing, but with a Windows 7 laptop. So what I would like, I think, is your recommendations for a KVM switch (or better solution) that allows the Mac and a (windows 7 or windows xp) laptop to share the Asus display. Bonus marks if they can share Apple keyboard and magic mouse, but am quite happy to use separate mouse keyboards. The MacPro is the one that is always connected, the laptops come and go. Any ideas? • Do ALL your variables need to be declared private? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Why do we need private variables? I know that it's best practice to stay safe, and that we should always prevent others from directly accessing a class' properties. I hear this all the time from university professors, and I also see this all the time in a lot of source code released on the App Hub. In fact, professors say that they will actually take marks off for every variable that gets declared public. Now, this leaves me always declaring variables as private. No matter what. Even if each of these variables were to have both a getter and a setter. But here's the problem: it's tedious work. I tend to quickly lose interest in a project every time I need to have a variable in a class that could have simply been declared public instead of private with a getter and a setter. So my question is, do I really need to declare all my variables private? Or could I declare some variables public whenever they require both a getter and a setter?

• Incremental search for un/accented characters

  Does emacs have an incremental search mode, where searching for a character will search for itself and for any other versions of the character with accent marks, similar to how Google Chrome (at least v27) will do when searching in a page? Alternatively, is there an additional library or piece of elisp code that can put incremental search in such a mode? For example, incremental search for: 'manana', would find 'manana' or 'mañana' 'motley crue', would also find 'Mötley Crüe' (with case-sensitivity off). Even a solution that only covers a subset of these characters would be helpful.

• php returns junk characters at end of everything

  php appears to be adding junk characters to the end of everything it returns on a friend's site. I'm not an admin on the server but I'd like to give an informed complaint to get this fixed. The site is http://daytoncodebreakers.org. You can see some junk at the end of every page on the site (what appear to be question marks with something else in the middle). I originally thought this was a wordpress issue, but check out http://daytoncodebreakers.org/whereisini.php (which is just a call to phpinfo), and http://daytoncodebreakers.org/hello.php (which is just 'Hello World'). I'm not sure if this is the most appropriate site, but I think this is a server config issue, so I'm posting it here (rather than stackoverflow or superuser). Feel free to move it if want.

• Scroll bar for vim(curses-based one, not gvim)?

  As a Linux user, I have been quite comfortable with CLI and TUI tools, but I miss the little scrollbar present in almost every GUI program. It has always been easier for me to know how long the file is and where I am from the scrollbar instead of "9752 lines, 24%". What I expect is a ASCII scrollbar that looks like | | | | # # # | | | and I can configure to appear on the left or right (and if on the left, the relative position to line numbers and fold marks). Is there already a Vim plugin to do this, or how can I write my own one? Vim's plugin framework doesn't seem to support such UI modifications directly.

• Chrome: Selecting a link by doing search on its text

  I'm trying to use my computer using the keyboard exclusively, without touching the mouse. When browsing the web it can get hard. I use Tab to select links, but there are often dozens of links on a webpage. I can use Chrome's text search (Ctrl-F) to home in on a piece of text in no time; But I can't figure out how to use it to click on a link. For example, let's say there's a link on a webpage with the text "Swedish Furniture". I can easily find it by typing Ctrl-F s w e d, and then Chrome marks the link as found, but is there any way to follow the link after it's found without tabbing through all the links on the page?

  My game has a collection of cards (about 64) that are unlocked (one by one) provided that 4 items are collected/gained in the game. Right now I have to include the data for the items collected by the user, but including that inside the plist looks like too much hassle. What kind of structure should be more suitable for this? How do you manage a collection of unlockable items like this?

• Replace text with spaces in MySQL

  I'm trying to do a global replace of search in my database, which has a lot of articles with a double carriage return because of this code: <p> </p> I'd like to replace this in my WordPress blog so instead of that appears... nothing, and so I can delete the CR. I've tried this on my database UPDATE wp_posts set post_content = replace (post_content,'<p> </p>',''); but didn't work. Why? Do I have to add special thinks to consider the space between the <p>and the</p>? Mmm. Good points, both Jon Angliss and Wim. Jon, as you could have guessed, the database shows no entries with that text string. So there's something going on inside the post_content field. Wim, the famous   was replaced previously, but there are still hundreds of posts that for some reason have something different between the p and the /p tags. I've done a search of one of the posts with this error: mysql> select * from wp_posts where post_title like '%3DVisionLive%'; And looking in the wp_content field, this is a little piece of the post: Phil Eisler, responsable de la divisi?n 3D Vision.?</p> <p>?</p> <p>Este portal ser? por tanto No spanish tilde (accent) shown on the terminal, and instead of an space there's a quotation mark between the p and the /p tags. I've tried to replace <p>?</p>, but again, no results. There's some character (or several) there, but I don't know how to discover that. Maybe it's the character set of my terminal, but I've accessed the database from phpmyadmin and in that case there's a space character between the p and the /p. Weird.

• How do I configure PHP5 and Apache2 on Ubuntu Server?

  I'm trying to follow these instructions (under the Troubleshooting PHP 5 heading). I have PHP installed and when when I run a2enmod php5 it says "Module php5 already enabled". The problem is I created a file, test.php, that's just this: <?php phpinfo(); ?> and put it in /var/www, like the instructions tell me to, but running curl http://localhost/test.php produces an Apache made 404 that says it can't find that file. I have: ServerName localhost DocumentRoot /var/www in one of the sites-available in the /etc/apache2 directory. I should probably figure this out on my own, but the instructions say for troubleshooting do: "If the problem persists, check your PHP file authorisations (it should be readable at least by Ubuntu user "apache"), and check if the PHP code is correct. For instance, copy your PHP file, replace your whole PHP file content by "" (without the quotation marks): if you get the PHP test page in your web browser, then the problem is in your PHP code, not in Apache or PHP configuration nor in file permissions. If this doesn't work, then it is a problem of file authorisation, Apache or PHP configuration, cache not emptied, or Apache not running or not restarted." And I don't know where the PHP file authorisations are or how to do that.

• Windows 7 "freezes" (chills?), and then "unfreezes" after about 1 minute.

  Hi, I have an Acer Timeline 1810T netbook (4GB RAM) with Windows 7 x64. About once or twice a day, it "freezes" - the reason I put this in quotation marks is that it does not really freeze, as I you cant move mouse, etc. I can move my mouse and jump between different applications, but I cant use the applications for anything. So I can jump between notepad and Firefox, but I cant browse to a new web page. I have been trying to determine the source of this misery for a while now, and I suspect it has something to do with the hard drive - indirectly if not directly. Here are some screen shots of the resource monitor during a "freeze" and during normal operation: Freeze: http://imgur.com/Gcgq1.jpg Normal operation: imgur.com/mlHaI.jpg As you can see, CPU is fine during freeze, but the disk is going bananas.. Does anyone have an idea of what these reading means, or about the problem in general? There seems to be no specific activity that sets this off - it can be during browsing, or during media playback with nothing else open. The fact that I can see navigate to applications but not use them might suggest a hard drive problem as well? Maybe I can access the stuff that is in RAM, but not anything that would require interaction with the drive.. Very appreciative of any help!

• How quickly toggle smart quotes in Word 2010?

  I'm working on a long technical document that contains numerous displays of computer code. In running text, I want my quotation marks to be curly, which means that Word's "smart quotes" autoformatting-as-I-type feature is one I want on. But in code displays, curly quotes are incorrect, so in these cases, I want smart-quotes-as-I-type disabled. Is there a fast way to toggle this setting? Or is there a way I can tie it to the paragraph style I'm in? (I use a distinct style for code displays.) Currently, to toggle the setting, I have to click FileOptionsProofingAutoCorrect Options..."Straight quotes" with "smart quotes"OKOK, which is seven mouse clicks. Toggling it back is another seven mouse clicks. Isn't there a faster way? A keyhboard shortcut to do the toggling or a toolbar button that would toggle it with a single click would be great. Having the setting depend on the paragraph style I was in would be even better.

• Non-alphanumeric character folder name auto-completion problems

  I have been working with Windows 7's command line and have some folders that begin with non-alphanumeric characters. When I try to use tab completion to complete the folder name, the initial character is not included inside of the quotation marks. Example: C:\Users\username\!example is the folder I want to get into, but when I type: cd ! and press <Tab> to autocomplete, it will complete to cd !"!example" instead of the expected cd "!example" Any ideas on how to fix this besides changing the folder names? EDIT: I realize I could just tab through the entire list after entering cd, but I'm looking for a way to speed up the process. I have been spending a significant amount of time navigating these folders. UPDATE: This also happens if there is a space in the directory. For example: "c:\Program Files". In order to continue using tab to complete, first the second quote has to be deleted. C:\Program press Tab "C:\Program Files" is what appears. To navigate to a subdirectory, first the quote after Program Files has to be deleted before the next directory can be spelled out.

• Can I nest a command string within another command string?

  Whenever I run the following command in an elevated command prompt, I get the 0x80070005 Access Denied error code. I'm assuming it's a permissions error for the child shell. I'm running the command in an elevated prompt on Winddows 7 Pro SP1. FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-* 9.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /norestart" Can place the "Runas" command within the already nested command in order to run the child shell as an admin? I don't think I can because of conflicts with quotation mark locations. If there's another way to do this, such as via a batch file, I'm open to alternative methods, although I do prefer running it as a single string. Sidenote1: Ignore the space after the first asterisk in the command string. It was added one for aesthetics & accuracy. Sub-question: Could I use this "fix" to circumnavigate the problem entirely? • How can I tell if a CSV is in UTF-7 or UTF-8

  Excel seems to save CSV files in (what I think is) UTF-7, despite the fact that most information I have read suggest that in general, you should not UTF-7. Indeed, other applications (Text pad, which lets me choose) save things in UTF-8 (or Unicode etc, but UTF-7 is not even an option). Using .NET, I read the stream, and have to provide the encoding. If I get it wrong, accented characters are replaced with question marks. If I try and let StreamReader work it out (using detectEncodingFromByteOrderMarks), it gets it wrong (at least, it does if the file has been saved in Excel). It is unlikely that anything other then Excel will be used, so I could just assume UTF-7. Are there any other options? I need to support French (accented), German, Dutch, and Norwegian characters.

• How can I mark a group of changes/changesets in SVN, Hg, or Git

  I would like to mark an arbitrary group of commits/changesets with a label. Commit 1 *Mark 1 Commit 2 *Mark 2 Commit 3 Commit 4 *Mark 1 Commit 5 *Mark 2 The goal is to easily locate all the changes for a specific mark, and to have that grouping persisted in the VCS directly, as opposed to some outside system like a bug tracking system. The location and ordering of the marks needs to be arbitrary, and should be able to work with both committed/uncommitted and pushed/unpushed changes. In SVN the best way I know is to just edit the commit notes and add some sort of special text that you can search for e.g. "**Mark 1". Or just to make a fake edit and commit it and use its commit note to list all the included revisions. Is there a better solution for SVN? Are there equivalent or better solutions for Hg or Git?

• Code folding for LaTeX in Emacs

  Is there an Emacs minor-mode (or piece of elisp code) that lets you selectively hide/show environments while in LaTeX mode? For instance, I would like to move to the beginning of a long \begin{figure} block, hit a keystroke, and have the contents of that figure environment hidden from view. Similarly with \begin{proof} and so on, and ideally even with \subsections. Is this possible? I just tried hs-minor-mode, allout-mode, and outline-minor-mode, but most of them don't recognize LaTeX's environments, e.g. hs-minor-mode fails with "scan error: unbalanced parentheses". I would prefer not to have to enter explicit folding marks like {{{ as in folding-mode. [Ideally it would be great if the folding were persistent, but I see that that question doesn't have an accepted answer yet.]
