• Windows Server 2008 Remote Desktop printing blank pages

  I have a Windows Server 2008 (not R2) machine which has problems with redirected printing. Clients connecting via Remote Desktop have their printers redirected and appearing for them to print to, but printing from applications on the server to local printers is giving blank pages, missing pages, or pages with headers/footers but no middle section. The issues are consistant for similar prints, but sometimes other prints and/or applications will work correctly. I have installed PDFCreator locally on the server, and the same print jobs sent by the same application appear correctly in the PDFs. Printing that PDF via the redirected printer prints correctly. I have tried the following: Installing drivers. I’ve installed several drivers different drivers, for both the client and server operating system and architecture, on the client and the server. Reinstalling the printers. I’ve tried reinstalling on remote print servers, the clients, and the host server, and tried different client machines. Granting everyone full permissions on the print spool folder on the server. Editing the registry to forward non-USB ports (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/302361) None of these have made any difference. The clients are using Windows 7 or Windows XP and none of them have any issues with printing locally. Any ideas? Thanks!

• Multiple Remote Desktop Connection in Windows Server 2003?

  My company is transitioning all user PC's to Windows 7 64-Bit in anticipation of the 2014 cutoff for Windows XP support. So far everything has been going great except for one specific piece of software that will not run in Windows 7. The current plan is to give everyone a cheap secondary PC to run this software but I feel that's a little much for software that's not even used all the time, although it is essential. I've suggested we install virtual machines but the company does not want to pay for the XP licences. I have access to a copy of Windows Server 2003 that is no longer being used and I was wondering if it was possible to create a remote desktop server. I know it can be done on a one-to-one basis, but this is a 15 person helpdesk. I'd like to be able to support multiple remote dekstop sessions, each with their own logins and dekstops. Is this possible? Are there any other alternatives to my issue? FYI, I've been told that XP mode is only free for consumers. There are costs when used in a corporate environment.

• Non-standard installation (installing Linux from Linux)

  So, here's my setup. I have one partition with the newest version installed, a second partition with an older version installed (as a backup just in case), a swap partition that both share, and a boot partition so the bootloader doesn't need to be setup after each upgrade. Partitions: sda1 ext3 /boot sda2 ext4 / (current version) sda3 ext4 / (old version) sda4 swap /swap sda5 ntfs (contains folders symbolically linked to /home on /) So far it has been a very good setup. I can create new boot loaders without screwing it up and adding my personal files into a new install is as simple as creating some symbolic links (the partition is NTFS in case I need to load windows on the system again). Here's the issue. I'd like to be able to drop the install into /distro on the current version and install a new version on / on the old version effectively replacing/upgrading it. The goal is to be able to just swap out new versions as they are released while maintaining redundancy in case I don't like th update. So far I have: downloaded the install.iso created a folder in /distro copied the install.iso into /distro extracted vmlinuz and initrd.lz into /distro Then I modified /boot/grub/menu.lst with the following entry: title Install Linux root (hd0,1) kernel /distro/vmlinuz initrd /distro/initrd.lz vmlinuz loads perfectly but it says it can't find initrd.lz on boot. I have also tried to uncompress the image with: unlzma < initrd.lz > initrd.img And, updating the menu.lst file to match; but that doesn't work either. I'm assuming that vmlinuz (linux kernel) loads, fires up the virtual filesystem by creating a ramdisk (initrd), mounts the iso, and launches the installer. Am I missing something here? Update: First, I wanted to say that the accepted answer would have been the best option if I was doing a normal Ubuntu install. Unfortunately, I was installing Linux Mint (which lacks the script needed to make debootstrap work. So the problem I with the above approach was, I was missing the command that vmlinuz (linux kernel) needed to execute to start boot into LiveCD mode. By looking in the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file I found what I was missing. Although this method will work, it requires that the installation files reside on their own partition. I took the easy route and used unetbootin to drop the LiveCD on a usb drive and booted from that. Like I said before. Debootstrap would have been the ideal solution here. Even though I couldn't use it I wrote down the steps it would've taken to use it. Step One: Format sda3 (the partition with the old copy of linux that's being overwritten) I used gparted to format it as ext4 from within the current linux install. How this is done varies based on what tools you prefer to use. Step Two: Mount the newly formatted partition (we'll call the mount ubuntu for simplicity) sudo mkdir /mnt/ubuntu sudo mount -o -loop /dev/sda3 /mnt/ubuntu Step Three: Get debootstrap sudo apt-get install debootstrap Step Four: Mount the install disk (replace ubuntu.iso with the name if your install disk) sudo mkdir /media/cdrom sudo mount -o loop ~/ubuntu.iso /media/cdrom Step Five: Install the OS using debootstrap (replace fiesty with the version you're installing and amd64 with your processor's architecture) sudo debootstrap --arch amd64 fiesty /mnt/ubuntu file:/media/cdrom The settings here varies. While I loaded debootstrap using an install iso, you can also have debootstrap automatically download and install if with a repository link (While most of these repositories contain debian versions I'm still not clear as to whether Ubuntu has similar repositories). This is how you'd deploy debootstrap if you were doing it directly from a repository: sudo debootstrap --arch amd64 squeeze /mnt/debian http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian Here's the link that I primarily used to figure this out.

• Synchronizing local and remote cache in distributed caching

  With a distributed cache, a subset of the cache is kept locally while the rest is held remotely. In a get operation, if the entry is not available locally, the remote cache will be used and and the entry is added to local cache. In a put operation, both the local cache and remote cache are updated. Other nodes in the cluster also need to be notified to invalidate their local cache as well. What's a simplest way to achieve this if you implemented it yourself, assuming that nodes are not aware of each other. Edit My current implementation goes like this: Each cache entry contains a time stamp. Put operation will update local cache and remote cache Get operation will try local cache then remote cache A background thread on each node will check remote cache periodically for each entry in local cache. If the timestamp on remote is newer overwrite the local. If entry is not found in remote, delete it from local.

• Remote Desktop event ID 20499. No noticeable issues

  I get a warning event with ID 20499 for TerminalServices-RemoteConnectionManager.The error is: Remote Desktop Services has taken too long to load the user configuration from server \server.domain.home for user administrator. Yet, I don't see any issues (I'm guessing because that user is on the machine local). Why am I getting this warning? I'm on Windows Server 2012 R2 connecting from a Windows 8.1.

  A client has a Canon iRunner210S and is complaining about slow print speeds. I've searched for a install manual online but came up empty. A call to Canon technical referred me to their dealer network for service, as as informing me that there isn't a manual available on their website. Anyone know how to install these and/or have a link to a manual? The current setup has the printers on a LAN Manager printer port instead of on straight IP ports. Is this normal for this printer? And what exactly are Lan Manager ports (based on my research, they appear to be a way to authenticate a connection)?

  Howdy, I just recently installed hyper-v server 2008 r2 on a dedicated server i have, but i'm having trouble enabling remote management. Running the HVRemote - http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/HVRemote - tool seems to have yielded some positive results, and all tests on the server pass (firewall, permissions, etc), but client-side things are not working. • Total newb having SSH tunnel and remote MySQL access problems

  I don't often work with linux or need to SSH tunnel into remote MySQL databases, so pardon my ignorance. I'm using Windows 7 and am needing to connect to a remote MySQL instance on a Linux server. For months I had been using the HeidiSQL client application successfully. Today two things happened: the DB moved to a new server and I updated HeidiSQL, now I cannot log in to the MySQL server, when attempting I get this message from Heidi: SQL Error (2003) in statement #0: Can't connect to MySQL server on 'localhost' (10061) If I use Putty, I can connect to the server and get MySQL access through command line, including fetching data from the DB. I assume this means my credentials and address are correct, but do not understand why putting those same details into HeidiSQL's SSH tunnel info won't work. I also downloaded the MySQL Workbench and attempted to set up a connection through that client and got this message: Cannot Connect to Database Server Your connection attempt failed for user 'myusername' from your host to server at localhost:3306: Lost connection to MySQL server at 'reading initial communication packet', system error: 0 Please: 1 Check that mysql is running on server localhost 2 Check that mysql is running on port 3306 (note: 3306 is the default, but this can be changed) 3 Check the myusername has rights to connect to localhost from your address (mysql rights define what clients can connect to the server and from which machines) 4 Make sure you are both providing a password if needed and using the correct password for localhost connecting from the host address you're connecting from From Googling around I see that it could be related to the MySQL bind-address, but I am a third party sub-contractor with no access to the MySQL settings of this box and the system admin is assuring me that I'm an idiot and need to figure it out on my end. This is completely possible but I don't know what else to try. Edit 1 - The client settings I am using In Heidi and MySQL Workbench I am using the following: SSH host + port: theHostnameOfTheRemoteServer.com:22 {this is the same host I can Putty to} SSH Username: mySSHusername {the same user name I use for my Putty connection} SSH Password: mySSHpassword {the same password for the Putty connection} Local port: 3307 {this is on the SSH settings tab and was defaulted to 3307 by Heidi, changing it to 3306 gives me a different error: SQL Error (1045) in statement #0: Access denied for user 'mySQLusername'@'localhost' (using password: YES)"} MySQL host: theHostnameOfTheRemoteServer.com {consensus seems to be I should use 'localhost' here} MySQL User: mySQLusername {which I can connect with once in with Putty} MySQL Password: mySQLpassword {which works once in with Putty} Port: 3306

  I am trying to script the execution of an installer on remote web servers. The installer in question is also a Windows Service that hosts NServiceBus. If RDP'd into the server, the application is installed by the following command: &"$theInstaller" /install /serviceName:TheServiceName The installer prints output about its progress registering the service and connecting to the database to stdout, among other things. This works fine from an RDP session, but when I execute it remotely via PS, I get a you-can't-do-this-over-the-network message if I execute it directly or via Invoke-Command -computername $theRemoteServer: System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'file://\\theRemoteServer\c$ \thePath\AutoMapper.dll' or one of its dependencies. Operation is not supported. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131515) --- System.NotSupportedException: An attempt was made to load an assembly from a network location which would have caused the assembly to be sandboxed in previous versions of the .NET Framework. This release of the .NET Framework does not enable CAS policy by default, so this load may be dangerous. If this load is not intended to sandbox the assembly, please enable the loadFromRemoteSources switch. See http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=155569 for more information. (Note: I added an additional "\" to the path in the first line in order to get it to show up correctly in the preview on this site.) • SMTP Remote Queue on Exchange 2003

  We are currently using Windows Server 2003 R2 with Exchange 2003 and SolarWinds Exchange Monitor to monitor. A couple of weeks ago the SMTP remote queue began to build up and it got to about 150 messages in the queue when it began to go down. For the last couple of days the queue has been building up and it has now reached 450 messages. Is there anyway that i can clear this and is it anything that I need to worry about? Thanks guys!

  I have an issue when connecting to remote machines using the following: Set objWMIService = objSWbemLocator.ConnectServer _ (sIP, "root\CIMV2", strUser, strPassword, "MS_409", "ntlmdomain:" + sDomain, 128) the problem is that some machines are not timing out and the process hangs. • Options for gaming remotely on a LAN?

  I have a Windows 7 desktop for gaming, a big bulky tower with a nice graphics card. I'd like to sit out on my porch rather than inside while the weather is nice and play games. I have a high end Macbook Pro. What are my options? I figure either remote desktop over the LAN on the Macbook or maybe wireless video, keyboard and mouse. Something so I don't have to physically move the PC. The sort of games range from things like Skyrim to SW:TOR to Torchlight 2. What are my options? They have to do a better than running Boot Camp on the Macbook (MacBookPro8,1 i7 2.7 Ghz but Intel Graphics 3000). I realize there's a lot of issues involved in running a game over a remote desktop with a decent frame rate, I'm interested in a practical answer with real experience behind them. Ideally something that works on a OS X so I don't have to reboot into Windows.

  Quick question: I have a situation where I need to let multiple people on different PCs log into one server 2008 machine as administrator simultaneously over remote desktop. I have the CALs for it, it's just not set up correctly. When one user tries to log in, it boots the other out. What I need is to present to them a different session, just each as logged in as admin. • Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks!   I am wondering how much bandwidth in terms of bytes sent/received is consumed by a typical remote desktop session. I need to know this because our ISP enforces a cap on monthly bandwidth usage (i.e. the total amount data in GB that can sent or received in a month). So just wondering like how much KBs or MBs are transferred per hour in an average RDP session.
