• Force Windows to output only mono sound

  So, the 'right' half of my pair of headphones broke (the transducer+wire are fine, but the earpiece broke on the headband and so the earpiece won't sit over my ear). So now the right channel is being broadcast to my cube neighbors when I wear my headphones. Yes, they look very silly. Is there a way to ensure, in Windows XP (or Windows Media Player), that all stereo sound is downmixed to the left channel only (ie, in mono) so my neighbors don't hear my music? I know that I can setup the mixer to set the balance to 100% left, but information in the right channel won't be heard.

  I have a question very similar to this one, but I want to continuously run perfmon, during reboots and throughout the day. Further, I'd like to generate a perfmon report every 10 mins or so. The original question tells me how to run perfmon when the server is restarted, but I don't know how to make perfmon continuously run while throwing periodic files. I've tried setting it as a scheduled task that needs to be done every 10 mins, but this is too sloppy, and when the scheduled task kicks another instance, the current perfmon report writer crashes, and I get a garbage report. I've also tried writing a sloppy batch script that would fire off the task at scheduled intervals, but this is the same problem as the scheduled task. I'm sure I'm just missing something silly, but I don't see it. Ideas? (If it helps, I'm running Windows 7 locally, and I'm trying to set up the processes for boxes running Windows 2008.)

• DNS Help (CNAMEs and A Records)

  I'm trying to set up my DNS properly so that I can have hosting through PHPFog and email services using MailGun. PHPFog has us redirect the naked domain to the www and then use a CNAME to point the www to PHPFog and mailgun provides the MX records to use. The problem I'm having is that I have no A record set up on Hover because when I do, the CNAME no longer works (?), or at least it seems that way because I am no longer seeing my site from PHPFog, I'm seeing a Hover landing page. I know all the records I need, I just can't seem to get them to play nicely together. I've been told Amazon's Route 53 should be able to solve my problem, but I haven't yet figured out how. I just need to have hosting at PHPFog and email services through MailGun. As you can probably tell, I have only a very limited understanding of DNS, so forgive me if this is a silly question.

• Can I run iOS apps on my Mac?

  I've seen a number of neat iPhone apps recently that I'd like to use. In particular, there are a number of neat musical apps (metronome, tuner, etc.) that seem highly rated, and have no real Mac equivalent. I don't have a recent iPod/iPhone/iPad (I don't need portability or a phone and it seems silly to pay hundreds of dollars to run $15 worth of apps), but I do have an Intel (C2D) Mac. Can the iPhone dev simulator, or any other emulator, download and run iPhone App Store apps?

• Creating an OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 OpenDIrectory database with a specific domain in mind

  Mountain Lion Server has been one of the most infuriating things ever recently. Above and beyond tons of crashing I've been completely unable to do the following in a way that makes sense to both me and Apple. Name your server srv01.myoffice.domain.com Create an OpenDirectory database as a Master from scratch as dc=domain,dc=com I can rename my server temporarily (taking down vital services in the process due to the automagicliciousness) and create a new profile, however when I switch back to the original domain name the default search base for server related authentication magic is now dc=srv01,dc=myoffice,dc=domain,dc=com. I've tried everything I can think of including using slapconfig backupdb/restoredb and slaving the server off of another then promoting it. This seems rather silly and Apple shows no response to many requests to resolve this. Does anybody out there have the magic to have OpenDirectory work as it should.. being able to give it any domain you want and then having all vital services operate correctly.

• IMAP/POP won't send allow emails to outside- New Dell PowerEdge 7310 running SBS 2011

  I have a brand new out of the box Dell PowerEdge T310 running SBS 2011. Our employees at our remote offices can't send emails to recipients outside of our own domain. The workstations at the same location as the server aren't having any problem. I would at this time like to say "Thanks a lot" to the super-minds at Microsoft for protecting our email server from rogue computers attempting to send fake emails. (Silly me I thought proper login and password conventions would handle that.) I know this is something dealing with relaying but thus far nothing from any posts I've read have changed anything. Honestly, if someone is crafty enough to guess one of our login/password combos, let them send emails through our server I don't care!

• Copying files SSH vs sFTP

  I'm a bit of a unix noob, but this question seems super basic, yet I can't find an answer anywhere. Basically, to my knowledge, sFTP is just FTP over ssh. So, why can't I drag and drop files from one folder to another on the server side like I can on ssh. Why when I want to unzip a .tar in a server folder, does it first want to copy it to my machine and then back? Why can't it just unzip like it can when I'm using the command line. I know that when I use the command line it is using the resources of the remote machine, but why can't sFTP do that too? Is there a way to execute commands which I would normally do over SSH, but in a gui? I'm tried mapping to the drive to my own machine, I've tried so many sFTP clients that it's silly. Is there another class of program that I just don't know of?

• How do special folders work on Windows 7?

  Hello, I did something silly and accidentally moved my my special folders (My Documents, My Music etc.) to the Desktop. Once I noticed my mistake I quickly moved them back. But now my System acts erratically. It continuously creates new empty folders on my Desktop. And I have now two folders named "My Pictures" in my home directory. One of which is magically linked to the one in Desktop while on the command line one one is actually visible. If I delete the superfluous folders on Desktop then the explorer crashes. It is all a big mess. Of course I checked HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\User Shell Folders and it looks all ok there. So here the question: As anybody got any informations on how Windows 7 handles the special folders which might help be clean up the mess? I am well versed in using both the command line or the registry editor.

• VisualSVN Server won't work with AD, will with local accounts

  Decided recently to switch VisualSVN from local users to AD users, so we could easily add other employees. I added myself, gave Read/Write privileges across the whole repo, and then tried to log in. Whether I'm using tortoisesvn or the web client, I get a 403 Forbidden error: You don't have permission to access /svn/main/ on this server. I Googled a bit, but only found mention of phantom groups in the authz file. I don't have any of those. Any ideas? It works just fine with local accounts. EDIT: Don't know why I didn't try this earlier, but adding the domain before the username makes it work, ie MAIN/Bob. This normally only works when there are conflicting usernames...one local, one in AD, but for whatever reason it works here too. Kinda silly, but I can live with it.

• Does using cat5e cables yield any disadvantages in combination with cat6/cat6a network?

  If I were to have a fully compliant cat6 or cat6a network running through my walls... that is to say, wires and jacks... What would be the concequence of plugging a cat5e wire into one of the jacks? I'm assuming that it would still run at cat5e standards, but obviously not cat6/6a standards because the whole connection is not cat6. I only ask because it seems silly to me to make a bunch of cat6 patch cables for connections that don't really matter, like standard desktop computers and other equipment. Or will doing so hamper the whole network?

• Git version control with multiple users

  Hello, i am a little bit lost with this issue, let me explain you my problem: I want to setup a git repository, three of four users will contribute, so they need to download the code and shall be able to upload their changes to the server or update their branch with the latest modifications. So, i setup a linux machine, install git, setup the repository, then add the users in order to enable the acces throught ssh. Now my question is, What's next?, the git documentation is a little bit confusing, i.e. when i try from a dummy user account to clone the repository i got: xxx@xxx-desktop:~/Documentos/git/test$ git clone -v ssh://[email protected]/pub.git Initialized empty Git repository in /home/xxx/Documentos/git/test/pub/.git/ [email protected]'s password: fatal: '/pub.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly is that a problem of privileges? need any special configuration? i want to avoid using git-daemon or gitosis, sorry, maybe my question sound silly but git is powerfull but i admit not so user friendly. • Sustaining Dual Channel among many RAM modules

  I'd like to know what are the factors that need to be set in order to sustain the Dual Channel mode. In a mobo with 4 DDR3 slots: Do I have to put pair of chips? Eg: If I put 3 identical chips only, will I have Dual channel or not? If I put 4 Ram chips that aren't from of same ventor/model, will I have the same latency among them (the highest of all)? Also, will I sustain Dual Channel mode? If one Ram has max frequency of 1033 and the other 3 chips are of 1300, will I have 1033Mhz for all chips and Dual Channel mode on? What if I put 2x4Gb and 2x8Gb chips (latency, Dual Channel)? Can I put 4Gb chips in slots 1 and 3 and 8Gb in slots 2 and 4 and still have dual channel mode enabled? (Some of the questions might sound silly but their answers aren't that clear to me) (Also, assume that there aren't any bottlenecks because of other parts on the system)

• Apache httpd.conf handle multiple domains to run the same application

  So what we are looking for is the ability to do the following: We have an application that can load certain settings based on the domain that it is being accessed from. So if you come from xyz.com we show a different logo and if you come from abc.com we show a different logo. The code is the same, running from same server just detects the domain on the run Now we want to get a dedicated server (any suggestions?) that will enable us to point all the doamins that we want to this server (we change the DNS for the domains to that of our server) and then when the user goes to a certain domain they run the same application. Now as far as I can understand we will need to create a "VirtualHost" in apache to handle this. Can we create a wildcard virtualhost that catches all the domains? I am not an expert with Apache at all. So please forgive if this comes out to be a silly question. Any detailed help would be great. Thanks

• Why does cd print when run in command substitution?

  If I use the 'cd' BASH built-in in a command substitution, it prints extra stuff to stdout, but only when piped to, eg., less. $ echo `cd .` # The output is a single newline, appended by echo. $ echo `cd .` | less # less displays: ESC]2;my.hostname.com - tmp/testenv^G (END) What's going on there? This behavior isn't documented in the bash man page for cd. Obviously, running just 'cd' in a command substitution is silly, but something like NEWDIR=`cd mypath; pwd` could be useful. I solved this by instead using NEWVAR=`cd mypath > /dev/null 2>&1; pwd` but I still want to know what's going on. • Using a redirect of any form to remove a query string with Apache

  Because of the silly way iTunes works the only way to update the URL for a feed is by setting up a permanent redirect from the old feed to the new. This seems easy, but I've hit a snag. The old URL ended in /?feed=rss2, the new URL is just a file, so it ends in podcast.xml. When I redirected from the old URL to the new, iTunes picked up the new URL BUT, WITH the query string, so now the URL ends in podcast.xml?feed=rss2. This is allowing listers to download the show - which is good, but causing some other problems. Is there any possible way to set up a permanent redirect that will redired podcast.xml?feed=rss2 to just podcast.xml? Mod_Rewrite seems to just pass through query strings, so I'm at a loss! Bart.

• Set certain WSUS updates to auto-install

  We're running a WSUS server for the simple purpose of caching updates. Since we are a very small network of all "power users", we've got the domain group policy for WSUS updates on the clients set to prompt for download/install. i.e. We don't want updates to install without our knowledge. But there are a few cases where it would be nice to be able to set a certain update to auto-install. e.g. Windows Defender updates, Malicious Software Removal Tool, Outlook Junk Email Filter, etc. Basically all the silly little updates that you would always install anyway and don't require a restart. Is there a way to set the general policy to prompt for download/install, but auto-install certain regular updates? P.S. WSUS itself does have the facility to auto-approve certain updates.   I am a linux newbie so excuse me if I ask silly things. I recently find out that if I edit GRUB before booting and I add rw init=/bin/bash I end up with a root shell. Being in a condition that I want to understand everything I would like to know why this happens. I mean is it a bug? is it a feature? is it there to help admins to fix things as it only works if you have physical access to a computer? Which part are we exploiting? GRUB or the actual kernel? Sorry for asking a lot of things.

• Looking for an open source email archiving application

  I'm looking for an open source application that will archive my email. It might do this by logging in to my POP3 account on a regular basis and copying the emails across, or it might just read my Unix mbox/maildir file/directory directly on the mail server. It must be open and it must run on Linux (or any open OS actually). Ideally, it would have a web interface, but this is not a major requirement. MXsense (http://www.mxsense.com/mxsense.html) seems to be pretty-much what I want, except it's not open. I have no requirement for MS Exchange support. Any suggestions? The rationale (maybe a bit silly) is that I run Linux exclusively and it's still doesn't have an email client that is anywhere close to MS Outlook in terms of awesomeness, so I find myself switching between mail clients often. I would feel better about this if I had an archive of my emails, so it wouldn't matter which mail client I was using this month.

• Getting ROBOCOPY to return a "proper" exit code?

  Is it possible to ask ROBOCOPY to exit with an exit code that indicates success or failure? I am using ROBOCOPY as part of my TeamCity build configurations, and having to add a step to just silence the exit code from ROBOCOPY seems silly to me. Basically, I have added this: EXIT /B 0 to the script that is being run. However, this of course masks any real problems that ROBOCOPY would return. Basically, I would like to have exit codes of 0 for SUCCESS and non-zero for FAILURE instead of the bit-mask that ROBOCOPY returns now. Or, if I can't have that, is there a simple sequence of batch commands that would translate the bit-mask of ROBOCOPY to a similar value?

• Tips on Managing Podcast Subscriptions

  I listen to a silly number of technical podcasts. I listen to enough of them that it is literally impossible to keep up. I nearly gave up and started dropping feeds from my subscription list when I heard Craig Shoemaker talk about his Polymorphic Podcast fast feed. The idea is he provides the same content at a higher speed so you can listen to his complete show in 3/4th the time. I tried it out with his recent jQuery Secrets with Dave Ward interview and I was shocked with the feed quality. It was a super clear, understandable conversation which only took a fraction of the time commitment. I experimented a bit and played the normal recording at 2x speed on my iPhone and the quality was once again just fine. But now I'm saving half of the time. I'm curious as to how you might manage your podcast subscriptions. Can you offer any tips or advice on how to get the best bang for your buck when it comes to technical podcast listening?

• Installing Java on a Virtual Private Server

  I have recently managed to get my employer to pay for a vps. I teach and asked the vps provider to enable Perl, Python, Ruby, Tomcat and Java. They've done the first four (really quickly) but have got back to me asking which parts of Java I need. I think the Java Virtual Machine is a given but what other S/W do I need to get installed? I think by getting the vps I now have the chance to teach Enterprise Java and want to get into Java Message Server and Enterprise patterns. Can I get Glassfish installed or is that a silly question? • how to make man page not disappear on exit

  ...probably a silly question but I could not beat google into telling me the answer so posting here: I got 2 machines - Slackware 13 and Fedora 11. On the slack machine, when I use man I can scroll all the way to the bottom then exit man and the info stays in my terminal window (which I find very convenient as I can read it while typing the command in question, copy-paste the options, etc.). On fedora when I close man the man page info is gone. How can I configure man (or is it the terminal?) to not remove the man page info on exit?

• How do ring and bus network connect to router?

  Sorry this is probably a very silly question, but for some reason i am confused. How does a LAN with bus or ring topology connect to a router and other LANs? For example in a star network they all connect to a switch which can then connect to a router, but where does a switch go and fit in a bus or ring topology? In this image of a ring network there is no switch: http://www.brainbell.com/tutorials/Networking/images/01fig04.gif would the switch in the ring network simply be placed alongside the other nodes? • How can I move a load of zone records from a web based system to text based one?

  Hi there, I have a few domains with Dreamhost where I have set a load of records using their web based domain name system, and I've like to move them to another provider that lets me enter info directly as a text file for their name server, bind 9 to use. (If you're interested, I'm moving them to Gandi.net). Previously when I used a cpanel based system to do something similar, there was a tool that let me simply enter a domain name, and any available domains were automagically entered into a system, saving me typing it myself (and bringing down sites with silly typos in the process). What open source tool can I use to query a domain for all the relevant subdomains and records and list them in a format like a zone file, that I can use with other name servers?
