• Changing default shortcut for Spaces on a Macbook Pro with Snow Leapord?

  I'm primarily a Linux user but my main home PC is a Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard. The concept of "Spaces" in a Mac is extremely important to how I utilize my development environments and I use this feature on Linux all the time. I use Compiz Manager for Ubuntu which allows me to "Desktop Switch" and navigate all desktops using the Ctrl+Alt+Arrow keys to a particular desktop. On a Mac, the process is similar, however, you're only given 3 non-customizable short-cuts: Option+Arrow, Ctrl+Arrow, and Alt+Arrow. How can I change the keyboard shortcut to take Ctrl+Option? The keys would then fit my working style and it won't feel awkward to remember two sets of keyboard shortcuts. Thanks! Mahmoud

• Where is custom icon information stored in Mac OS X Snow Leopard?

  I have an external Lacie hard drive connected via USB to my Macbook Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have nothing but music on the external drive with every album sorted in it's own individual folder and have changed all of the individual folder icons to display the album art of the songs from the album inside. I want to reformat my laptop, but I'm afraid if I do that, the album art will disappear if it's stored on a system file within the main hard drive OS. My question is this, is the information which tells the OS to display the album art listed in a hidden system file on the external Lacie drive or my laptop hard drive and if I reformat will I have to reassociate all of the album art to the folders on the external or will it keep it's associations.   Thanks in advance for your help! As the title states, I have Windows 7 x64 Boot Camp Partition, Snow Leopard on MBP, and VMWare Fusion 2.x/3.x. I'm trying to open the partition as a vm and I get into an endless cycle where windows tries to Repair Start Up disk for a very long time before failing. The boot camp partition runs fine natively. Has anyone experienced this? Can someone provide or link a remedy? My google fu is failing miserably ....

How can I check if the module was loaded properly? how can i make sure that there where no conflicts? how can i make sure that there were no dependencies issues with another module? • Why does notepad crash on desktop files in the save-as dialog?

  Here's a puzzling problem - maybe somebody has an idea. Right now I am out of ideas. On Win7 64bit, the following crashes Notepad: On Desktop, right click, select "New | Text Document". This creates "New Text Document.txt". Right click on that file, select "Edit". This opens notepad with the empty file. Select "File | Save as": Notepad crashes and Win7 reports that "Notepad has stopped working". Now, move the file to c:\temp and repeat steps 2 and 3: no crash this time and the save-as dialog appears normally. I can create similar steps for the "open" dialog. Things I have tried: Safe mode - does not work, same problem Create a new user and try again logged in as that user - no crash Name file differently, or create elsewhere and then move to desktop - same problem Use Wordpad instead - same problem Review shell extensions with ShellExView - nothing extraordinary here Stare at the event log entries for each of the crashes. Does not enlighten me. At time of crash look at the process explorer stack view. Hangs at a function "TaskDialog". sfc.exe /scannow repaired some files but the problem persists.   We got a new laptop in the office with Snow Leopard. We installed the new driver for the Epson CX 4200 printer we have and it seemed to be working okay. However, after an Apple update, the printer stopped working. A few days later we saw an update for the Epson driver and so we downloaded and installed that. However, the printer still isn't working. We plugged and unplugged the printer power cable and usb cable, and also tried replacing the ink (because the colour ink light was blinking)...however the printer still isn't working?

  After my logic board was replaced, I connected my laptop back to my network, and Time Machine gave me a popup, as shown on this thread: http://superuser.com/questions/78068/recycle-time-machine-for-new-machine/78264#78264 I misread the question and clicked on "Create New Backup" when I should have clicked on "Reuse Backup" to connect to my old backup file. How can I trigger that popup again? Turning Time Machine on and off does not work, and the instructions on forums to fix via terminal doesn't work because snow leopard is missing the fsaclctl command (and I'm also not familiar with terminal commands.)   does java 6 generate thread dump in addition to heap dump (java_pid14941.hprof) this is what happened to one of my applications. java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded Dumping heap to java_pid14941.hprof ... I did find ava_pid14941.hprof in working directory, but didn't find any file which contains thread dump. I need to know what all the threads were doing when I got this OutOfMemory error. Is there any configuration option which will generate thread dump in addition to heap dump on out of memory exception?

• How do I debug a difficult-to-reproduce crash with no useful call stack?

  I am encountering an odd crash in our software and I'm having a lot of trouble debugging it, and so I am seeking SO's advice on how to tackle it. The crash is an access violation reading a NULL pointer: First chance exception at $00CF0041. Exception class $C0000005 with message 'access violation at 0x00cf0041: read of address 0x00000000'. It only happens 'sometimes' - I haven't managed to figure out any rhyme or reason, yet, for when - and only in the main thread. When it occurs, the call stack contains one incorrect entry: For the main thread, which this is, it should show a large stack full of other items. At this point, all other threads are inactive (mostly sitting in WaitForSingleObject or a similar function.) I have only seen this crash occur in the main thread. It always has the same call stack of one entry, in the same method at the same address. This method may or may not be related - we do use the VCL in our application. My bet, though, is that something (possibly quite a while ago) is corrupting the stack, and the address where it's crashing is effectively random. Note it has been the same address across several builds, though - it's probably not truly random. Here is what I've tried: Trying to reproduce it reliably at a certain point. I have found nothing that reproduces it every time, and a couple of things that occasionally do, or do not, for no apparent reason. These are not 'narrow' enough actions to narrow it down to a particular section of code. It may be timing related, but at the point the IDE breaks in, other threads are usually doing nothing. I can't rule out a threading problem, but think it's unlikely. Building with extra debugging statements (extra debug info, extra asserts, etc.) After doing so, the crash never occurs. Building with Codeguard enabled. After doing so, the crash never occurs and Codeguard shows no errors. My questions: 1. How do I find what code caused the crash? How do I do the equivalent of walking back up the stack? 2. What general advice do you have for how to trace the cause of this crash? I am using Embarcadero RAD Studio 2010 (the project mostly contains C++ Builder code and small amounts of Delphi.)

• MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) Wi-Fi network connection breaks after few minutes

  I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard). After connecting on a Wi-Fi network, the connection "breaks" after a few minutes. What I mean by "breaking" is that all requests, whether it is loading a web page, connecting to a share folder, connecting to my local router at 192.168.0.1, or pinging anything doesn't get through (time out). When in a "break" situation, I can see in the Network Settings panel that I still have an active IP, which I can successfully ping. I have this problem at home with a router D-Link DI-624 and at work with a D-Link WBR-2310, all with updated firmwares. I thought DHCP was the issue. So I tried assigning a fixed IP address (192.168.0.166). It successfully connects, but after a few minutes, the connection still breaks. The solution I'm currently using is that I disable the AirPort (on the Network icon menu in the top bar), wait a few seconds then re-enable it. It then quickly works, but the connection still breaks after a few minutes. I tried Googling my problem but I think I can't find any good keywords ! It's my first question here, so sorry if I don't respect some rules.

I've found some references that state that snow leopard includes PEAR.. but how come I cant find it?! Could someone confirm this.. if if so, where is my pear?

  I was recently working on a Windows 8 app, and the application was crashing occasionally.  When resuming the application, the app would crash and close immediately without providing any feedback or information on what went wrong.  The crash was very difficult to reproduce, and I could never get the crash to occur when I was debugging through Visual Studio.  My app was crashing, and I had no idea what was going wrong!  HELP!!! After doing some digging, I found that when a Windows 8 Store App crashes, an error is logged in Windows Administrative Events.  You can view the details of any app crash by launching the Event Viewer and selecting Administrative Events under Custom Views.  The Source of the error will be listed as AppHost.  AppHost is the process that runs your Windows 8 Store App.  The error details contain all the information you would expect to find, including a stack trace and line numbers.   Windows 8 Tip:  A shortcut for launching the Event Viewer in Windows 8.  Right click on the bottom left corner of your desktop (where you normally click to go to the Start Screen).  A menu will appear with shortcuts to a number of common system tasks such as Event Viewer, Task Manager, Command Prompt, and Device Manager.

  Sometime ago, I used carbon copy as I was replacing my hard drive in my Mac Mini running Snow Leopard. Afterwards, on my new drive I had some permission problems. I've tried several times running a repair permissions / repair disk from disk util. It shows that there are problems and I think it says its correceted the problems. However the problems remain, what can I do to fix them ?   I just had "System Program Problem Detected" window appearing several times before user session even started (I have KDM with autologin to locked session). I traced it with xprop to being /usr/lib/update-notifier/system-crash-notification which is binary (while I expected it to be some script) and belongs to update-notifier package (while I expected it to be somewhere from apport*). P.S.   Justed stumbled across CRaSH and although it looks mighty interesting, I'm wondering why a Java developer should invest time & energy into learning (yet another) shell language. What sort of standard- and cool-applications can CRaSH be used for? Is this like a Groovy-version of Jython? I guess, when the dust settles, I'm looking for CRaSH's "wow" factors. • How to remap "Dashboard" key to show the Desktop on OSX [Snow] Leopard?

  I use my Desktop far more often than I use my Dashboard. However, my MacBook Pro comes with a dedicated key for Dashboard but it doesn't come with one for Desktop. Using this article, I was able to remap my Dashboard key to show the desktop by changing the values for keys 62 and 63 ("Dashboard") to the same values used by keys 36 and 37 ("Show Desktop"). Specifically, I changed the value for both array index #1s to 111. This worked great for my external (kinesis freestyle) keyboard. But when I went back to my internal macbook keyboard, I discovered that the Dashboard key still mapped to the Dashboard rather than the Desktop. How can I complete this mapping for all of my keyboards? The Kinesis Freestyle, my internal MacBook Pro keyboard, and my external Apple Aluminum Bluetooth keyboard? Update: I'm definitely not looking for a solution that involves using the Function keys instead of the special keys. I wish to keep using my Function keys as function keys as they're indispensable for other applications.

  Somehow, I managed to set a passwd for my _postgres user on my OS instead of setting it on the postgres role I have as my superuser / root. Anyways since this, I've been struggling with that user showing up in the account section and login screen, which I really would like to avoid. I've read through some docs about this, and setting the password to * should be all that is needed to fix this. But after several attempts doing this with and without dscl to no avail, I'm gotten to a point where I don't know what to do anymore. I didn't think it would be even hard doing this, but clearly I'm missing something, so how do you do this?

  I type echo $PATH on the command line and get /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty. I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install.
