• Rack processes taking over CPU under Passenger

  I have a Spree site running the following stack: Nginx 1.0.8 Passenger 3.0.9 Ruby 1.9.2-p290 Rack 1.3.6 Rails 3.1.4 Spree 0.70.5 I recently upgraded from Spree 0.70.3, which also brought a Deface upgrade from 0.7.x to 0.8.0. Since then things have been very unstable. Recently we've seen some CPU-hogging processes which drive load up on the server and grind the whole thing to a stop. They're Rack processes and it looks like Passenger is starting them; they're owned by the site-runner user, an unprivileged user who owns the application code. (Passenger automatically runs the site code as the user who owns it.) If I restart Nginx and kill the runaway processes, it helps for a while, but eventually similar processes return and bog things down again. How can I figure out what's starting these processes, what they're trying to do, and how to stop them?

• Vim - How Recognize Spaces as Tabs (set listchars=tab)

  I wonder if it is possible to use a configuration for that command "set listchars=tab:¦¦,trail:·" to "see" 4 spaces as tabs and get the effect of the picture below (using real tabs)... I use the setting "set expandtab" to Vim use spaces in place of tabs. I really need to use spaces instead of tabs, but I would keep the functionality above. There is some form of do this? Here's how Vim behaves when I use "set expandtab"... ... I wish he recognized one tab for every 4 spaces like above! My setup for tabs... set tabstop=2 set shiftwidth=2 set softtabstop=2 set expandtab Thank you!

• Recently reloaded computer, now have trailing effect when windows overlap

  I recently did a clean install of my home machine and I am having a weird graphical error where if I move one window across the top of another it leaves a trail: I have the most recent NVIDIA drivers installed and nothing new is installed on my machine than before the reload (and I never had this issue before). I have two monitors and it happens on both so I'm sure it isn't a hardware issue (the card and my main monitor are also both less than 6 months old) I've also noticed a ripple when scrolling down on web pages which I believe is related. Any ideas what might be causing this and solutions to fix it?

• Running Windows XP with VMWare Fusion from a Fujitsu-Siemens recovery disk.

  I have installed a trail version from VMWare Fusion. I had (sold now) a very old Fujitu-Siemens laptop (from around 2001) which came with two recovery disks (which I still have :P). One recovery disk is a Windows XP installer, the other is a disk with drivers and useless software you will never use and run permanently in the background. If I install Windows XP from the recovery disk (which did not contain any software except what comes with Windows XP, for as far as I know), will it run in VMWare Fusion? Or do I really have to buy/pirate a new Windows XP installation disk? Thanks. Yes, I need XP, not 7.

• Server Overload Due To Log File

  cPanel sent me the following email: IMPORTANT: Do not ignore this email. This is cPanel stats runner on ***.***.com! While processing the log files for user ***, the cpu has been maxed out for more than a 6 hour period. The current load/uptime line on the server at the time of this email is 04:41:14 up 15 days, 22:36, 0 users, load average: 7.66, 7.84, 8.00 You should check the server to see why the load is so high and take steps to lower the load. If you want stats to continue to run even with a high load; Edit /var/cpanel/cpanel.config and change extracpus to a number larger then 0 (run /usr/local/cpanel/startup afterwards to pickup the changes). How can I lower the load?

• Exchange 2010: Import a PST when Local Move Request fails

  So the trail of tears continues with my SBS 2003 to 2011 migration: all the mailboxes have moved mailbox store from OLDSERVER to NEWSERVER, with the Local Move Requests completing successfully, except for one. I've logged into their machine and have exported their mailbox as a PST. I'm about to import it, but it seems to me that because the mailbox is still on OLDSERVER, even with a new Outlook profile pointing to NEWSERVER in Outlook, it'll push the mail into the current mailbox store on the old server. Please tell me I don't have to blow away her existing mailbox, logon, etc. on the old SBSERVER: is there a way to change the state from "Legacy" to "User Mailbox" without actually moving the mailbox store? Create a new mailbox for her user in NEWSERVER?

  Amazon S3 is an dead cheap cloud storage service that offers unlimited storage in pay as you use model. Recently we moved all the images and other static files(scripts & css) of Tech Dreams to Amazon S3 to reduce load on VPS server. Amazon S3 is cheap, but monthly bill will shoot up if images/static files of the blog are not cached properly (more details). By adding caching HTTP Headers Cache-Control or Expires to all the files hosted on Amazon S3 we reduced the monthly bills and also load time of blog pages. Lets see how to add custom headers to files stored on Amazon S3 service. Updating HTTP Headers of one file at a time The web interface of Amazon S3 Management console allows adding custom HTTP headers to one file at a time  through “Properties”  window (to access properties, right on a file and select Properties menu). So if you have to add headers to 100s of files then this is not the way to go! Updating HTTP Headers of multiple files of a folder recursively To update HTTP headers of multiple files in a folder recursively, we can use CloudBerry Explorer freeware or Bucket Explorer trail ware applications. CloudBerry is my favourite as it’s a freeware and also it’s has excellent interface to access Amazon S3 from desktops. Adding HTTP Headers with CloudBerry application is straight forward – right click on the required folders and choose the option “Set HTTP Headers”.   November 14th , I will be presenting at Microsoft Mondays a session about Test Driven Development (TDD) in Visual Studio 2010 . Microsoft Mondays is program consisting of a series of Webcasts showcasing various Microsoft products and technologies. Each Monday we discuss a particular topic pertaining to development, infrastructure, Office tools, ERP, client/server operating systems etc. The webcast will be broadcast via Lync and can viewed from a web client. The idea behind the “Microsoft Mondays” program is to help you become more proficient in the products and technologies that you use and help you utilize their full potential.   Test Driven Development in Visual Studio 2010 Level – 300 (  Intermediate – Advanced ) Test Driven Development (TDD), also frequently referred to as Test Driven Design, is a development methodology where developers create software by first writing a unit test, then writing the actual system code to make the unit test pass.  The unit test can be viewed as a small specification around how the system should behave; writing it first helps the developer to focus on only writing enough code to make the test pass, thereby helping ensure a tight, lightweight system which is specifically focused meeting on the documented requirements. TDD follows a cadence of “Red, Green, Refactor.” Red refers to the visual display of a failing test – the test you write first will not pass because you have not yet written any code for it. Green refers to the step of writing just enough code in your system to make your unit test pass – your test runner’s UI will now show that test passing with a green icon. Refactor refers to the step of refactoring your code so it is tighter, cleaner, and more flexible. This cycle is repeated constantly throughout a TDD developer’s workday. • Gallio and VS2010

  With the launch of VS2010 this week it seems like a good time to talk about some of the work that has been going on with Gallio to integrate with VS2010. This work will be a feature of the next release, no beta yet but you are welcome to try the nightly builds (all normal risks apply etc). Just like VS08 you can use the VS Test Runner to run Gallio tests (such as MbUnit) in the same way you can MSTest. With Gallio installed the Test View window shows a Gallio (in this case MbUnit) test loaded (note the icon). If I go ahead and run this test I can see it working in the Test Results window. In VS2010 you can collect additonal data that a test can include (system data, intellitrace data etc). If I set VS to collect system data and run the test I can click the 'Test run completed' link and see that it is included. If I also right click in the Test Results window I can select "View Test Results Details" and a Gallio test results window will load up. Note that Gallio treats the collector data as attachments so you can go ahead and view the attachment data right from the report.

• Geek Bike Ride at JavaOne 2012 - Pictures

  Following the tradition of JavaOne Latin America 2011, a gorgeous day in San Francisco marked the beginning of JavaOne 2012 with another Geek Bike Ride. About 50 Java developers got together this morning at Fisherman's Wharf and rode a bike along Marina, Crissy Field, Fort Mason, Golden Gate Bridge, and ultimately finishing in Sausalito downtown. This is a beautiful biking trail, mostly flat with a couple of good hills. Some folks even continued to Tiburon for an extra challenge. Check out map by Blazing Saddles for the exact course. They provide excellent bike rentals and a good service too!   Do you need to upload a very large file to store online or email to a friend? Unfortunately, whether you’re emailing a file or using online storage sites like SkyDrive, there’s a limit on the size of files you can use. Here’s how to get around the limits. Skydrive only lets you add files up to 50 MB, and while the Dropbox desktop client lets you add really large files, the web interface has a 300 MB limit, so if you were on another PC and wanted to add giant files to your Dropbox, you’d need to split them. This same technique also works for any file sharing service—even if you were sending files through email. There’s two ways that you can get around the limits—first, by just compressing the files if you’re close to the limit, but the second and more interesting way is to split up the files into smaller chunks. • Emacs: methods for debugging python

  I use emacs for all my code edit needs. Typically, I will use M-x compile to run my test runner which I would say gets me about 70% of what I need to do to keep the code on track however lately I've been wondering how it might be possible to use M-x pdb on occasions where it would be nice to hit a breakpoint and inspect things. In my googling I've found some things that suggest that this is useful/possible. However I have not managed to get it working in a way that I fully understand. • Do you think natively compiled languages have reached their EOL?

  If we look at the major programming languages in use today it is pretty noticeable that the vast majority of them are, in fact, interpreted. Looking at the largest piece of the pie we have Java and C# which are both enterprise-ready, heavy-duty, serious programming languages which are basically compiled to byte-code only to be interpreted by their respective VMs (the JVM and the CLR). If we look at scripting languages, we have Perl, Python, Ruby and Lua which are all interpreted (either from code or from bytecode - and yes, it should be noted that they are absolutely not the same). Looking at compiled languages we have C which is nowadays used in embedded and low-level, real-time environments, and C++ which is still alive and kicking, when you want to get down to serious programming as close to the hardware as you can, but still have some nice abstractions to help you with day to day tasks. Basically, there is no real runner-up compiled language in the distance. Do you feel that languages which are natively compiled to executable, binary code are a thing of the past, taken over by interpreted languages which are much more portable and compatible? Does C++ mark an end of an era? Why don't we see any new compiled languages anymore? I think I should clarify: I do not want this to turn into a "which language is better" discussion, because that is not the issue at hand. The languages I gave as example are only examples. Please focus on the question I raised, and if you disagree with my statement that compiled languages are less frequent these days, that is totally fine, I am more than happy to be proved mistaken.

• Slow Jquery Animation

  I have this webpage : http://miloarc.pyrogenicmedia.com/ Which atm is nothing special. It has a few effects but none that break the bank. If you mouse over a tile, it should change it's opacity to give it a fade effect. This is done through the Jquery Animation, not through CSS (I do this so it can fade, instead of being a straight change). Everything looks nice when the page loads, and the fades look perfect. Infact if you drag your mouse all over the place, if gives you a "trail" almost like a snake. Anyway, My next problem is that you will see there is a box in the top left, which is going to tell you information about the tile you are hovering over. This seems to work fine. When you mouse over that information box, it switches it's position (So that you can reach the tiles that were previously hidden underneath it). From my understanding, this is all working fine, and to the letter. However, After one move of the info box (One hover). Viewing the page in Firefox turns slugish. As in, after a successful move of the info box, the fade effects become very stuttered, and it doesn't pick up events as fast meaning you can't draw a "trail" on the screen. Chrome doesn't have this issue. It seems to work fine no matter what. Safari also seems ok. Although I do notice if I move my mouse really fast, it does jump a bit but not as much as firefox. Internet explorer doesn't work at all. Seems to crash the browser... And there is an error with the rounded corner plugin im using (Not sure why...). All in all, I think whatever I'm doing inside my code must be heavily sluggish. But I don't know where it is happening.
