  • A dacpac limitation – Deploy dacpac wizard does not understand SqlCmd variables

    Since the release of SQL Server 2012 I have become a big fan of using dacpacs for deploying SQL Server databases (for reasons that I will explain some other day) and I chose to use a dacpac to distribute my recently announced utility sp_ssiscatalog (read: Introducing sp_ssiscatalog (v1.0.0.0)). Unfortunately if you read that blog post you may have taken note of the following: Ordinarily a dacpac can be deployed to a SQL Server from SSMS using the Deploy Dacpac wizard however in this case there is a limitation. Due to sp_ssiscatalog referring to objects in the SSIS Catalog (which it has to do of course) the dacpac contains a SqlCmd variable to store the name of the database that underpins the SSIS Catalog; unfortunately the Deploy Dacpac wizard in SSMS has a rather gaping limitation in that it cannot deploy dacpacs containing SqlCmd variables. I think it is worth calling out this limitation separately in this blog post because its a limitation that all dacpac users need to be aware of. If you try and deploy the dacpac containing sp_ssiscatalog using the wizard in SSMS then this is what you will see: TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio ------------------------------ Could not deploy package. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Dac) ------------------------------ ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Missing values for the following SqlCmd variables:SSISDB. (Microsoft.Data.Tools.Schema.Sql) ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ The message is quite correct. The SSDT DB project that I used to build this dacpac *does* have a SqlCmd variable in it called SSISDB: Quite simply, the Dac Deployment wizard in SSMS is not capable of deploying such dacpacs. Your only option for deploying such dacpacs is to use the command-line tool sqlpackage.exe. Generally I use sqlpackage.exe anyway (which is why it has taken me months to encounter the aforementioned problem) and have found it preferable to using a GUI-based wizard.   • Unexpected SQL Server 2008 Performance Tip: Avoid local variables in WHERE clause

    Sometimes an application needs to have every last drop of performance it can get, others not so much. We’re in the process of converting some legacy Visual FoxPro data into SQL Server 2008 for an application and ran into a situation that required some performance tweaking. I figured the Making Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Fly session that Yavor Angelov (SQL Server Program Manager – Query Processing) presented at PDC 2009 last November would be a good place to start. I was right. One tip among the list of incredibly useful tips Yavor presented was “local variables are bad news for the Query Optimizer and they cause the Query Optimizer to guess”. What that means is you should be avoiding code like this in your stored procs even though it seems such an intuitively good idea. DECLARE @StartDate datetime SET @StartDate = '20091125' SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE OrderDate = @StartDate Instead you should be referencing the value directly in the WHERE clause so the Query Optimizer can create a better execution plan. SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE OrderDate = '20091125' My first thought about this one was we reference variables in the form of passed in parameters in WHERE clauses in many of our stored procs. Not to worry though because parameters ARE available to the Query Optimizer as it compiles the execution plan. I highly recommend checking out Yavor’s session for additional tips to help you squeeze every last drop of performance out of your queries. Have a day. :-|

    I would like to know if it is a good practice to generalize variables (use single variable to store all the values). Consider simple example Strings querycre,queryins,queryup,querydel; querycre = 'Create table XYZ ...'; execute querycre ; queryins = 'Insert into XYZ ...'; execute queryins ; queryup = 'Update XYZ set ...'; execute queryup; querydel = 'Delete from XYZ ...'; execute querydel ; and Strings query; query= 'Create table XYZ ... '; execute query ; query= 'Insert into XYZ ...'; execute query ; query= 'Update XYZ set ...'; execute query ; query= 'Delete from XYZ ...'; execute query ; In first case I use 4 strings each storing data to perform the actions mentioned in their suffixes. In second case just 1 variable to store all kinds the data. Having different variables makes it easier for someone else to read and understand it better. But having too many of them makes it difficult to manage. Also does having too many variables hamper my performance?

  • List repositories from multiple projects in Trac using mod_python

    Currently working on a customized webpage that shows the available projects I have in Trac (1.0.1). I am using mod_python to connect the trac interface. I found a standard page for this, but it didn't show listing of repositories. The page showed some variables to link to the different projects, but I can't find variables to the different repositories inside the projects. After searching through the files it seemed like main.py had something to do with the variables (/usr/local/Trac-1.0.1/trac/web/main.py), but at first look it didn't seem easy to just add more variables. Is there a simple way to find the rest of the variables ? And how hard is it to add more variables? Will it perhaps be easier to do this an alternative way ? All I need is to link to the repositories dynamically

  • nginx does not use variables set in /etc/environment on system reboot, but does when restarted from shell

    I have a Rails app running on nginx/passenger. It restarts happily in a shell using sudo /etc/init.d/nginx stop|start|restart. But Passenger throws an error when the system is rebooted: "Missing the Rails #{version} gem".     I was reading the "C++ Coding Standards" and this line was there: Variables introduce state, and you should have to deal with as little state as possible, with lifetimes as short as possible. Doesn't anything that mutates eventually manipulate state? What does "you should have to deal with little state as possible" mean? In an impure language such as C++, isn't state management really what you are doing? And what are other ways to "deal with as little state as possible" other than limiting variable lifetime?

  • Google Analytics: Custom variables issue difference in data

    We’ve set up tracking through custom variables in Google Analytics to measure which offices are getting the most traffic. The custom var consists out of the key (=office) and value = (office name). In our Custom Var tab in audience we get no data (actually we got 1 hit, but we think the data is way off). When we setup advanced segments with the filters on key and value we get the correct data. Now we are wondering why we aren’t getting that data in the custom var tab.

  • I've Heard Global Variables Are Bad, What Alternative Solution Should I Use?

    I've read all over the place that global variables are bad and alternatives should be used. In Javascript specifically, what solution should I choose. I'm thinking of a function, that when fed two arguments (function globalVariables(Variable,Value)) looks if Variable exists in a local array and if it does set it's value to Value, else, Variable and Value are appended. If the function is called without arguments (function globalVariables()) it returns the array. Perhaps if the function is fired with just one argument (function globalVariables(Variable)) it returns the value of Variable in the array. What do you think? I'd like to hear your alternative solutions and arguments for using global variables.

    Here is my problem in a small bit of code used as an example, trial(0) function [] = trial(test) disp(test) if(test == 1) disp('test is one') test = 0; end disp(test) Matlab prints out this: 0 'test is one' 0 This is not my real code, there are over 500 lines of it, but this is a section of my code where the problem has risen. I have used the search function to see if I have been incrementing any variables anywhere, and have put in over 2 hours trying to see why MATLAB is changing my variables when I don't want it to.

    I am exploring an big controller method, with about 10 or so instance variables. Some of them are set in before_filter methods, and some others inside the method itself. I want to inspect them with puts, but dont want to write all of them out example: puts "var1: #{@var1.inspect}....var15: #{@var15.inspect}" Is there a generic method that will display all the instance variables with an @ sign set so far in the current method? If not, what is the next best way to inspect all of them at once without having to write all of them in a puts statement?

If I rename Path to something else, I sometimes get the problem, and sometimes I don't.
