• How to speak to a computer

  I am a self taught.. NEW..programmer. The language I chose was Objective-C so I can write for Apple products. I have learned the hard way that Objective-C has a steep learning curve but have forced myself to look at it over and over until I get it. I feel I am completing one major step and that is becoming very comfortable with the syntax and now as I enter the next big step...finding out what is possible with a computer language - I am thinking that all software is just developed within the confines of classes-loops-booleans-IF/OR statements-variables-etc. Is that a true assessment? When thinking of software in my head do I just need to learn to convert it all to arrays-loops/variables/classes - IF/OR statements - etc? Sorry if this question sounds funny but I am just learning how to take the language in my head and talk (what I think is) the language of a computer. Is there a good book or tutorial that helps illustrate how to speak computer speak?

• Installed Ubuntu on 12.04 on my MacBook Air now I want to expand the partition

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a 40GB partition on my Mac Book Air (5,2). I'm having so much fun with it, I'm ready to make the switch permanently and replace it as the primary OS on my machine. I realize I can wipe the machine and start from scratch, but I'm looking for alternatives since I like my current setup. Options are... Create a backup and restore the back up to a larger partition (Assuming I should keep the default OS X install for firmware updates) Create a backup and restore to the entire drive (create a restore usb stick for OSX - not sure if that's possible?) re-size my current partition and wipe the OS X partition and either, A. re-install OS X (similar to option 1) or B. create the USB key (similar to option 2). Thoughts? Any other suggestions? Would also like thoughts on the "optimal" or "best practice" for partitioning Ubuntu. Thanks!

• Does a person's day-to-day neatness (outside of programming) relate to quality and organization in programming?

  Before anyone jumps into any conclusion, I had a discussion with a friend (who's not a programmer at all) about the relationship between a person's neatness habit and the degree of neatness generally shown in works by the same person. This led me to think about this situation: Let's imagine you knew a programmer whose house was very messy. This person's lifestyle is messy by nature. On his desk there are books, papers, STUFF, piled everywhere including on the floor, mixed with dirty clothing, with no obvious organization at all. If you asked him to find a book he hasn't touched for at least a week from the cluster of chaos, he would take at least an hour to do so. How likely is it that he will produce very clean, consistent, and organized code that other people can use? Are there CS legends that are/were notoriously messy in day-to-day habits?

  Pre: I'm new with Maven. I used a lot of ant before. Qst: I decided to switch my project to maven since there are a lot of dependencies. But I have custom step in package phase (I'm BB dev - packing and signing) which is not available in maven yet. To process these tasks I have to download additional execs/jars. Is it common/have sense in Maven philosophy to load additional tools? Sure I could call ant from maven but it's not a question. Any helpful book about maven phases, philosophy and uses?

  I'm hoping there's a book or something out there for me to get... If I have a class that has Collection as an instance variable, what is that method of coding called? A design pattern? If so, where can I find more information on it? As I've been working with this mentor, he's really helped me understand my programming weakness and that weakness is thinking in terms of collections or relationships between objects. It just seems so difficult for me right now and I need to read to become smarter.   I currently reading a lot about Design Patterns and I have been watching various Pluralsight videos from their library. Now so far I have learnt the following: Repository Pattern Unit of Work Pattern Abstract Factory Pattern Reading the awesome "DI in .NET" book Now I read lot about Services and Service Layers and wanted some advice about the best place to read up and learn about these. I presume this fits into Domain Driven Design and I should start there? The term "Service" just seem to be used widely within IT and it can be confusing the exact meaning. So my questions is: What is the Service Layer Where is the best place to learn about them. I know there are probably tonnes of interweb/books/blogs on the subject, but some good areas to start from would be nice. If I'm being too vague, let me know.

  I'm trying to develop a desktop application which is similar to CCleaner. But I'm having problems with R&D resources... I can't find good books about Windows Operating System Programming Topic Examples; Explaining Windows 7 (or even 8) registry. Which registry entry turn on/off "showing desktop icons" Or, What is Windows registry defrag?, How can you defrag registry?, How can you optimize windows startup for( Windows 7 ) etc. I googled my questions, find msdn-some stackoverflow topics etc. But I can't find a book about low-level explaining current windows 7 operating system... • What is the difference between Times and Dup in Assembly Language?

  In a bootloader, the second last line is : TIMES 510-($-$$) db 0 Now, will this command also do the same : db 510-($-$$) DUP (0) If not why? I know what TIMES does, but its not mentioned in my x86 book by Mazidi (Pearson Publication). Any idea why? And what is the meaning of the $ sign exactly? Different sites have different information about $. And is the line TIMES 510-($-$$) db 0 absolutely necessary even if my bootloader code is of 512 bytes in size? So can anyone help me with these questions?

• Interviews that include Algorithms and Data Structures

  I want to start looking for jobs in great companies and I have four years of enterprise corporations development, three years with C#.NET and alomst one year with Ruby On Rails, JS, etc... But when I look up interview questions from Google, Amazon, Fog Creek, DropBox, etc... they are really targeted at students that are coming fresh out of college and still remember what was Dynamic Programming and Dijkstra algorithms ... but I don't! :( It has been a while for me ... If a I need a sort algorithm I would either Google it or there already is a library and method that does it for me. So what should I do? Do they realize that this guy is not coming from college and will ask more general questions about software architecture or nop! I should go back find my old Data structures book from the storage and read them? In that case wht books and language do you recommend to hone my skills?

• What would you call the concept of CofeeScript or Sass to be?

  There is this rising trend with web development of making new pseudo languages to extend the functionality of JavaScript, CSS and HTML given that those are static and their metamorphosis or evolution is painfully slow due to the variety of browser providers. So I am currently having a concept dilema on how to categorize them for a book I was made to write by my employer as no one seems to have a name for these pseudo languages. A tiny list of them : JavaScript: LiveScript, Metalua, Uberscript, EmberScript. HTML: Razor, Java Scriptlets. CSS : LESS, Sass. I believe the concept of these pseudo languages and a language or an extension of a language is quite different. First these languages do not extend any functionality currently existing on HTML or CSS or JavaScript, they simply work around it. And also they do not "compile" to an intermediate language, they are merely 1-1 translated to something that only then can be compiled. What would you call them?

• Preparing for Interview: I feel like, I wanna start coding all data structures again.... Is it a right way to start?

  I started preparing for my interview. I will be graduating this May. Right now, I am doing an internship in an product based company, so I did my fair share of preparation. The thing is, whenever, I try to do something, I always think that I should start everything from page 1. It is sometimes not at all helpful.... For example, reading a programming book from page 1 is not going to helpful, as I never completed one and always stopped half way through or rushed through towards deadlines. I am facing a similar situation now. I feel like, I wanna start coding all data structures from first(I attempted and finished atleast 6-7 last fall, preparing for interview). Now I feel like, I wanna code everything from first, instead of attempting something new.... I am not quite sure, what this is, but this is the way I have been..... LOL

Currently, I am a high school student planning to take programming, Digital electronics courses next semester.   Say you are using C/SDL for a 2D game project. It's often the case that people use a structure to represent a frame in an animation. The struct consists of an image and how much time the frame is supposed to be visible. Is this data sufficient to represent somewhat complex animation? Is it a good idea to separate animation management code and animation data? Can somebody provide a link to animations tutorials that store animations in a file and retrieve them when needed. I read this in a book (AI game programming wisdom) but would like to see a real implementation.

• Application versioning

  Haven't find similar issue so sorry if thats a duplicate. I'm about to start a migration of an already existing project from one web container version to the another. Currently, the application version is 2.2.5. Business requirement is to deliver a 3.0 version by the end of the year. Additional constraint is to release a working, stable version by the end of Q3. We are about to work in 2-weeks sprints and I'm wondering how can I approach the problem? I was thinking about releasing 2.3 by the end of Q2, then immediately promoting it as 3.0-a1, work on alphas (3.0-a2, 3.0-a3, ...) till the end of Q3, to start with 3.0-b1 in the early Q4 and finally release 3.0 around December. I don't feel comfortable saying that the application is already in 3.0 state in July, but I can't see other options. If you find some book chapters/blogs or your personal experience interesting please share your opinion.
