Should documenting all methods be mandatory or optional? Is there a rule for which methods to document? What are pros and cons of requiring every method to be documented?

  • What is a good free ODBC viewer?

    At my job I have to work with three different databases. One is a SQL Server 2008, for which I use SQL Server Management Studio, and another is MySQL, for which I use the MySQL tools. The third however is a Cache database that I can only access through a ODBC connection. Currently I use the SLIK software ODBC View tool to access it, but it is severely lacking when compared with the other two tools. Can anyone recommend a good tool for this type of work?

  • Calculating average (AVG) and grouping by week on large data set takes too long

    I'm getting average prices by week on 7 million rows, it's taking around 30 seconds to get the job done. This is the simple query: SELECT AVG(price) as price, yearWEEK(FROM_UNIXTIME(timelog)) as week from pricehistory where timelog > $range and product_id = $id GROUP BY week The only week that actually gets data changed and is worth averaging every time is always the last one, so this calculation for the whole period is a waste of resources. I just wanted to know if mysql has a tool to help out on this.

Now, I'm nearing the end of my degree, and I'm presented with the option to take some higher level EE courses than the intro I took freshman year.     At my job, we have pseudo-standard of creating one table to hold the "standard" information for an entity, and a second table, named like 'TableNameDetails', which holds optional data elements. On average, for every row in the main table will have about 8-10 detail rows in it. My question is: What kind of performance impacts does this have over adding these details as additional nullable columns on the main table?

  • JIRA or Trac?

    I used Atlassian JIRA for bug and issue tracking at my last job. I absolutely loved it and it was particularly easy on the eyes. My present company is using Trac instead, and while it does do all the basics, I am finding it really lacking, particularly with the inability to easily setup multiple projects and link issues. Oh, and the fact that it uses SQLLite is a bit of an issue for me to. Does anyone have any other good reasons to switch?
