  • Toolkit & Habits for Linux Network & System Administration [closed]

    I am tasked with the administration of a small office network as well as several workstations running mostly Debian and Ubuntu. There are two servers: one database & print-server, and one backup & file server. Being relatively new to this side of things, knowing enough to help myself to some degree on Linux, I would like to know what software tools and tasks/habits I can use/acquire to learn this field and be effective while doings so. I don't need to know what is the best, just what a newbie sys-admin can use as a starter-pack to learn and use as a base to grow into proper system administration. [edit] What I need is those few basic tools to start with, and the kind of things I need to do regularly, e.g.: which logs to check, when & what to monitor, the kind of 'right' place to start and to which I can ad as I need.

    I have BSOD with 0x000000f4 code. It appears when system is not loaded at all. No new hardware where intalled. Only nvidia drivers where updated 3 days ago and they are up to date for now(version 296.10). We're trying to determine if Server 2008 Web Edition supports being a print server, however the comparison chart I found here only mentions Internet Print Client. Unfortunately I work at a software company, so no one knows, and Microsoft's feature comparison isn't being incredibly helpful. If Web Edition does not support Print Server, what is the recommended edition for a Web and Print server machine?

  • Outlook receives winmail.txt attachment instead of Excel, PowerPoint or Word attachments from Lotus

    Ok so the title pretty much says it all. We are offering a Hosted Exchange solution for our customer. Everything is working fine except for one customer complaining that he is receiving winmail.dat or winmail.txt attachments instead of the actual Word Excel or PowerPoint attachments he should be receiving, only when these messages come from a specific European senders, that is using Lotus Notes. I know that usually the problem is coming from Outlook senders to other mail clients, but this is not the first they inform me of this but I can't find anything on the matter so far. Has anyone ever gotten and solved this problem? If not, does anyone have any idea regarding this? I had solved this problem a few months ago, by upgrading Outlook to SP2 and then uninstalling it using the Service Pack removing tool of Microsoft. It seems that only the latest SP1 version could work but not the SP2. The problem is that now nothing is working at all. Thank you for your help, Philippe

About 90% of them are imported perfectly but 10% are rewritten automatically into scientific notation. How do I turn this feature of. I just want all the numbers kept in their standard form.   • OpenOffice - make autocorrect keep the original letter case

    I use OpenOffice to write in about 5 languages, using the US keyboard only. I therefore make extensive use of the autocorrect feature to add accents and the like automatically. The problem is that OpenOffice insists on ignoring the letter case I use, and instead it always uses that which I used when setting up the autocorrect. For example, now when I type, in French, "D'apres", it gets converted to "d’après" instead of "D’après". Is there a way to tell OpenOffice not to change the letter case?

    I have a Windows Server 2008 machine running in VirtualBox. On initial installation, only one processor was made available, but now I want to run it as a multiprocessor machine. I have made all four cores available in the VirtualBox settings (as well as enabling VT-x/AMD-V and Nested Paging), but Task Manager still only shows one CPU. However, the four CPU cores are visible in Device Manager under Processors.   • 503 service unavailable when debugging PHP script in Zend Studio

    I have a web server with apache 2.0 installed. It comes with Zend Server install pack. When I’m trying to debug my php files apache serves a blank page with 503 service unavailable. Of course slow server-side code is tying up Apache requests for far too long, but I need it to wait, until my debugging comes to end. When I call to the page from a browser it launches ZendStudio debugging my PHP script (request redirects Zend Debugger module). I debug through my script and if I finish debugging in 120 seconds, I normally return to the browser. When it takes more than 120 seconds the browser displays '503 service unavailable' and I can't return to page output. I have even forced 'max_execution_time = 300' 'max_input_time = 600' in php.ini and 'TimeOut = 500' in httpd.conf. No matter whether it is Opera, IE or Firefox. I spent two days googling it, no right answer until now.

My Google Profile is linked to my Gmail account - is it possible to associate it with my business account?   • Restoring using SyncBack without profiles

    I backed up my internal hard drive (C:) using SyncBack onto an external (USB) hard drive with maximum compression. I then performed a clean install of Windows Vista onto the computer. I forgot to copy the SyncBack logs before the clean install. And now when ever I try to restore a directory, the RAR/ZIP files are copied to the system hard drive instead of extracting their contents to the hard drive. Also, SyncBack is not traversing the folders during the Restore process. How can I tell SyncBack to expand the compressed files? I am running the freeware version of SyncBack. I have to create new log files (unless SyncBack put them somewhere on the external drive). My alternative is to write a program that traverses the folders on the external drive and extracts files from the RAR/ZIP files. I am using Windows Vista, Service Pack 2, and the data size prior to backup was about 200 GB. (The backup process took over 72 hours due to "hiccups").

    FTPDrive has been a great utility for me, but it does not support 64bit Windows 7. The feature of FTPDrive that is useful for me is accesing files from an FTP as local files without pre-downloading so that I can preview and watch movies from a local FTP server without waiting for a full movie to get downloaded first. Do you know of any software which allows accessing files over FTP without pre-downloading? Thanks!
