• How do I setup a syslog server for my network?

  I would like to setup a syslog server to forward all log file from all of my VMs and servers. I really don't much about what is out there. So I turn to the community, Something on Linux is fine, what I want more is alert ability like emails telling me something is not right. If there was something to sort the logs by source that would be cool. Where would I want run the syslog server from? My admin WS or a server/VM? Any input would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

• Exploring other windows 8 machine's root

  (Note, this is without a domain.) I used to be able to type start \\other_machine\c$ in PowerShell and explorer would pop up with a login dialog. Then I'd type other_machine\moswald and my password (the account is a local admin, of course) and I'm in. Now both machines have Windows 8 installed, and this no longer works (the dialog re-prompts with an "Access is denied" displayed). I've verified (through whoami) that the user is named other_machine\moswald, and I'm positive I'm typing the correct password. So what gives? (edited to include specific result)

  I'm trying to add server-status location directive under one of my virtual host, however i'm getting a 403 Access Forbidden when browsing to www.mywebsite.com/server-status. Is it legal to put the Location Directive under a virtual host? • Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

  I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix. • Windows 7 doesn't connect to mapped drives at start up.....

  We are testing Windows 7 (32bit version) and logon to a windows 2003 domain that runs a logon script whichs maps our drive letters. We have no control over the domain. Of our 7 test users, 5 continually recieve red X's on their network drives after they logon. Double clicking on them connects the drives, however, any aplpication that requires files on the fileserver will fail since it thinks it has no connection to the drive. We have tried several reg edits (Enable Linked connections, KeepConn), we have tried to find information in the event viewer to no avail. We have also looked at any differences in NIC driver versions (none). The other 2 computers that can connect without problem are local admins, but, if we logon to the 5 that have the problem with the local admin credentials we get the red x's as well??? This one is a real head scratcher......

• How can I unobstrusively backup a few client's email?

  This is a small office. Our web/email server is a shared host. In the office we have a windows 2008 box up all the time that runs our NAS and a couple other services. I don't have access to the ISP admin stuff, but I assume it has cpanel or something like that. I can get access if I ask. I want to get email backed up from the server to our NAS without the users having to do anything. I suppose I could set up Outlook on that server with everyone's account, but that's a terrible idea, maybe (would sent mail. The boss uses outlook, but we have Apple Mail and Thunderbird clients too. I guess the important thing is that outlook look at the backups, so boss is happy. Then again, maybe it should be stored in whatever is the most portable format (that will work on NTFS) This is for about 10 users.

• Windows 7 is blocking ports

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. • Subdomain working externally only

  I am running a Windows Server 2008r2 web server with IIS. I have dev.domain.com and it works fine externally but when I try to access it from within the network it doesn't work. Is there a way to get this to work without changing the dns records for the whole network? I just have IIS Admin rights because our IT is done out of house. I can ask them to add it but I was hoping for another way. Thanks!

• SonicWALL NetExtender - Client Install?

  We are about to push out a new VPN solution for our organization. One of the beautiful things we saw in SonicWALL's SSL-VPN was the thin, browser-based solution of NetExtender. Does anybody have experience with this? My specific concern is that, at least in Windows 7 during testing, it prompts for admin credentials to install the ActiveX NetExtender plugin, which is standard for installing anything in a Windows domain environment. But doesn't this mean I actually have to go in and install the client on all domain laptops that will be using the VPN in the field? They wouldn't actually be able to simply visit the site and run the client, as advertised? By the way, we're using the SonicWALL NSA 3500 device. We do have ManageEngine's Desktop Central, which can push out software installations, but it usually has to be in the form of a .MSI package. Is there any solution to this, besides hitting up all my organization's computers?

• Can you have a staging and production slot in Azure Websites

  I'm looking at hosting 3 Websites (there will all use the same linked database resource but I think I have to use 3 websites within Azure for this); www.website.com, provider.website.com and admin.website.com. Using Windows Azure Websites, can you have a Staging, Production slot? I think this feature is only available to Azure Cloud Services but there is little documentation on this. If its not possible, other than spinning up 3 more sites to act as the staging sites is there another way? I want the ability to "swap" from staging to production.

• Start ELEVATED script from within script

  Hallo, I'm playing around with Powershell (relative NewBie) and I'm looking for the easiest way to call a Powershell script with elevated rights from within another script. I know of the runas verb for start-process which allows me to start a new script with a different account. My problem is, however, that under Vista (UAC active) every admin account has two access tokens, a normal privilege one and an elevated one. If I use the runas method, the second scripts gets started under the right account but with the non-elevated access token. Is there an easy way to control this? Thanks a lot for your help! Ulrich

• Group policy doesn't let me execute Chrome

  Where I work, the admins just migrated us to Windows 7. They gave me admin rights but still, I had to "Run as Administrator" my Google Chrome installation. After I managed to install it, I realized I even have to go through the "Run as Administrator" shortcut every time I have to execute the application. I even edited the properties of the shortcut to check "Always run as Administrator" but nothing changed. The message I get when I'm trying to launch Chrome is "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information contact your system administrator"... Is it something I could work out alone or I have to convince them to change the "policy"?

• Is PO Box on resume to get a call okay?

  Hello folks! Personally I've applied to quiet a handful of IT admin jobs inside my state and to the ones that are way far away. The sad part is I never miss to get an interview with the jobs in my state, but get a call once in a blue moon from jobs out of my state. Note: All the jobs are of similar nature. Recently one of my friends told me that "Applicants with local addresses are the ones that are even looked upon". How true is this? Does filtering take place at address level before qualifications? Is using a PO box on resume acceptable [one for each state like CA, TX, VA]? Any other suggestions to get calls from out of state? Thank you :) [wiki]

• Freenas & LDAP Multiple User Groups Not Taking Affect

  we are using, Freenas 9.2.1.7 which communicates with LDAP to control file permission. We have Windows users in multiple groups. Some belong to Finance as their primary group and Admin as another group they belong to. They can only access files from their Primary group. We use LDAP Account Manager - 4.4 to control which group the users belong to. We have also been trying to control access from the command line. We hae tried using this : setfacl -m group@:rwWxpaRc::allow DIR / Or File Name The problem is only the primary group is being seen / used. I am trying to determine why only on group is being used. I want to move it to production mode soon, however i have zero experience with using glassfish in production, i would appreciate if you give me some guidance about how to approach the following scenario: say i have deployed the web app using admin console pointing to the .war file. • If an old Exchange server is not part of a domain, does that imply that it can be safely removed without affecting mailflow?

  We are doing some cleanup, and there is an old Exchange VM hanging around that we want to get rid of. We do not have the local admin credentials, but we can ascertain that it is not part of the current domain. Seeing as the new production Exchange server is working fine, is it safe to power off and remove the old server? *I should probably note that this is not an Edge Transport server. There was an upgrade to Exchange 2013 at some point in the past, and there is only one functioning Exchange server now.

  Migrating from WindowsXP Home to Windows 7 Pro. The last bit that I'm stuck on is migrating application settings, such as the settings for Opera, Firefox, MSN Messenger, and others. On the XP system, this all seems to be in "user/Local Settings" and "user/Application Data". On the Windos 7 system, there is a "user/AppData" folder as well as "user/Application Data" and "user/Local Settings". When I try to access "Application Data" and "Local Settings" on Windows 7, I get an "Access Denied" error (even though my user is an admin). So... if I can't copy my application settings files to "Application Data" and "Local Settings" on Windows 7, where to I copy them to?

• SQL 2008. I have user in a db which has no login on the server. How is it possible?

I dont have access to the server adming rights but a dbadmin sent me screenshot where my user is not in the logins of the server. and also there is only one windows group called admin - databases which I am 100% sure my guy cannot be part of it. BUT... his username is in users of my db... How come user can appear in a db not having login on the server? P.S. in the logs it prints: Login failed for user 'xxxx'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors

• Mac OS X 10.6 executable not found without full path

  I just installed Apache via MacPorts. It seems that my Mac was absolutely confused about which version of the Apache executables to run. After moving the Apache executables that ship with the Mac to a directory that is not listed in the PATH variable, trying to run the httpd built by MacPorts fails even though the correct directory (/opt/local/apache2/bin) is listed in the PATH variable. If I navigate to the directory /opt/local/apache2/bin and type the command httpd I still get the error message -bash: httpd: command not found If I type the command with the full path /opt/local/apache2/bin/httpd it works fine. I've run the command alias to see if something was clashing but the only thing listed is: alias wget='curl -O' How do I find what is intercepting the command and preventing the executable being found in the directory, even when I'm inside the same directory? • Connect macbook to my LAN through a VPN - best solution? [closed]

  So I have a LAN connected via a ADSL/PPPoA, this is using a bog-standard DLink router supplied by my ISP (talktalk UK). I have a NAS within the LAN that is running FreeNAS and I want to be able to connect to it when I'm out and about. It's running an atom so it's quite low on juice consumption but I don't want to have it on all day and night so I've been waking it via a magic packet and booting it down from the web admin when I need it. So I want to connect to the LAN, I presume via a VPN, to be able to send a magic packet. But what is the best method to accomplish this, or is there an easier way? I've been looking at the cisco 857 integrated router and the Netgear prosafe 318(behind modem) but not sure If I'm on the right track with what I want to achieve as I've not much experience or knowledge with VPN's or networking (software engineering student). I have tried port forwarding but to no avail, either with magic packets or even connecting outside the LAN via DYNDNS. Thanks,

• Can an UPS be too powerful?

  Our old network admin bought the top range UPS a few months ago but never came around to setting it up and is no longer with the company. Now the old UPS broke down and needs to be replaced, but an external company that did an audit said that that UPS won't work. Now we are no hardware specialists, but the difference in specs is a higher output from 5A to 8.8A meaning a higher output. But isn't the UPS supposed to give the server the required output anyway? This 'independent' audit does sell its own hardware including UPSes so I'm not sure how much bias they have. Is there a reason why we can't replace the old broken UPS with the new more powerful one? Is there a way we can check to see if the UPS works with our server? ok, i wrote down the numbers again, the Volts and Amps are what are on the back (where you connect up the plugs which seem diffrent from on the front label.) old one APC SmartUPS 1500 220-240V -- 6.8A new one Dell UPS 1920W 250V -- 10A

  Ok, this is my first time with windows server os. I started doing this out of curiosity. I have a desktop running windows server os 2003 which is connected to a wifi router. I have a laptop that connects to this router wirelessly and THIS REPRESENTS A REMOTE USER. I want to provide access to this user to a set of files ON THE SERVER. So i create an account for this user, as Start - programs - admin tools -user manager and then the steps to create an account. When i use this laptop, i log in as administrator as its the default account that came. Now when i want this laptop to be the user i just created on the server, HOW DO I DO THAT?

• mod hosts file, connect to joomla on remote server

  I've just acquired an account on a remote server with Joomla installed. I was instructed to add xxx.xx.xxx.xx name.ca www.name.ca to the hosts file which I found in /private/etc/ . I had to su to my admin account and use sudo to mod file and found that hosts is also found in /etc/ though it is apparently the same file. I attempted to flush the the DNS cache using dscacheutil -flushcache and then launched Safari and entered address xxx.xx.xxx.xx/administrator but got a 404 error. Joomla was set up for me by the server owner and accessed from his Windows laptop to demonstrate so I know it should work but no go here. Can anyone suggest what the problem might be?
