• Remote desktop pressing Windows key randomly

  When I'm using remote desktop at work from one specific PC it has a quirk which is really quite irritating. I'll be typing away and suddenly the Windows key will be pressed, things start minimising, explorer launches, workstation gets locked (but it locks the remote workstation, so I have that wallpaper in the background, rather than the wallpaper from the local machine as I would expect). I've swapped keyboards, even though it didn't seem to be related to hardware and it made no difference. Done some internet digging and found someone saying it's related to using windows-l to lock the workstation. I've tried to stop myself using that shortcut to see if it helps and have failed miserably :D It's happening to at least one other user remote desktopping from the same machine to a different PC. Reinstalling isn't really an option (I don't admin the PC or I would have tried it, grr), although I could probably get it done if it would definitely resolve the problem. Any ideas?

• What happens when router has been set to incorrect time?

  I have a D-Link router for my home Wi-Fi network. Everyday at least once the internet suddenly goes down. I am simply not able to connect to the Wi-Fi network. If I just restart the router, it starts working. To debug the issue I logged into the admin panel and noticed the time was set to something in 2002. I have set it to the correct time. Will wait to see if that fixes the problem. In the meanwhile I want to know what can go bad when the router has been set to show an incorrect time? What are the kinds of problems expected? My Wi-Fi was working just fine most of the time, but sometimes it lost the connection. Could this be linked to the incorrect time setting?

• Where do dsrm, dsadd and dsmove come from?

  I am writing a script to join a machine to the domain after it has been imaged. (Don't want to do it in Sysprep.) On the machine I am writing the script on (a battered, world weary IT workhorse with all sorts of crud on it) my script works fine. However on one of my shiny new test machines, it doesn't find dsrm and dsadd. I can only assume I have inadvertently installed this on my machine in the past. I want these to be used just for the purpose of joining the machines to the domain, so don't want any full blown admin-ware installed. Where do I get / turn on dsrm etc?

Is it legal to put the Location Directive under a virtual host? • Can not join comp to the domain... greyed out

  I have an old WinXP Pro SP3 computer I need to join to the domain, simple right? not really. When I go to control panel - system - computer name and click on CHANGE ("rename this computer") everything is greyed out. I can not set it from workgroup to a domain. I am logged on locally as an admin. (Builtin account and one I created) I have checked local policy (gpedit.msc) on the comp, but it feels like a needle in the haystack. I could probably reload an image faster than trying to fix this...but I am curious so I post here to see if anyone knows of it/fix. • SonicWALL NetExtender - Client Install?

  We are about to push out a new VPN solution for our organization. One of the beautiful things we saw in SonicWALL's SSL-VPN was the thin, browser-based solution of NetExtender. Does anybody have experience with this? My specific concern is that, at least in Windows 7 during testing, it prompts for admin credentials to install the ActiveX NetExtender plugin, which is standard for installing anything in a Windows domain environment. But doesn't this mean I actually have to go in and install the client on all domain laptops that will be using the VPN in the field? They wouldn't actually be able to simply visit the site and run the client, as advertised? By the way, we're using the SonicWALL NSA 3500 device. We do have ManageEngine's Desktop Central, which can push out software installations, but it usually has to be in the form of a .MSI package. Is there any solution to this, besides hitting up all my organization's computers?

• How can I unobstrusively backup a few client's email?

  This is a small office. Our web/email server is a shared host. In the office we have a windows 2008 box up all the time that runs our NAS and a couple other services. I don't have access to the ISP admin stuff, but I assume it has cpanel or something like that. I can get access if I ask. I want to get email backed up from the server to our NAS without the users having to do anything. I suppose I could set up Outlook on that server with everyone's account, but that's a terrible idea, maybe (would sent mail. The boss uses outlook, but we have Apple Mail and Thunderbird clients too. I guess the important thing is that outlook look at the backups, so boss is happy. Then again, maybe it should be stored in whatever is the most portable format (that will work on NTFS) This is for about 10 users.

• Subdomain working externally only

  I am running a Windows Server 2008r2 web server with IIS. I have dev.domain.com and it works fine externally but when I try to access it from within the network it doesn't work. Is there a way to get this to work without changing the dns records for the whole network? I just have IIS Admin rights because our IT is done out of house. I can ask them to add it but I was hoping for another way. Thanks!

• Windows 7 is blocking ports

  I am trying to open port 80 and 3690 for HTTP and svnserve respectively. I have Windows Firewall off, and have tried temporarily disabling Mcafee VirusScan Enterprise, to no avail. According to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/, both ports 80 and 3690 are still blocked. I can't think of what would be blocking them if Windows Firewall and my antivirus are disabled. • How do I activate SQLite3 on PHP 5.3.3 Centos 5?

  I have reviewed the previous questions on this and they don't seem to cover what exactly I'm looking for, before I start, I'm no server admin. I'm trying to help get this server up and active and I have got it all going with exception to the SQLite3. • Freenas & LDAP Multiple User Groups Not Taking Affect

  we are using, Freenas 9.2.1.7 which communicates with LDAP to control file permission. We have Windows users in multiple groups. Some belong to Finance as their primary group and Admin as another group they belong to. They can only access files from their Primary group. We use LDAP Account Manager - 4.4 to control which group the users belong to. We have also been trying to control access from the command line. We hae tried using this : setfacl -m group@:rwWxpaRc::allow DIR / Or File Name The problem is only the primary group is being seen / used. I am trying to determine why only on group is being used. • Is PO Box on resume to get a call okay?

  Hello folks! Personally I've applied to quiet a handful of IT admin jobs inside my state and to the ones that are way far away. The sad part is I never miss to get an interview with the jobs in my state, but get a call once in a blue moon from jobs out of my state. Note: All the jobs are of similar nature. Recently one of my friends told me that "Applicants with local addresses are the ones that are even looked upon". How true is this? Does filtering take place at address level before qualifications? Is using a PO box on resume acceptable [one for each state like CA, TX, VA]? Any other suggestions to get calls from out of state? Thank you :) [wiki]

• If an old Exchange server is not part of a domain, does that imply that it can be safely removed without affecting mailflow?

  We are doing some cleanup, and there is an old Exchange VM hanging around that we want to get rid of. We do not have the local admin credentials, but we can ascertain that it is not part of the current domain. Seeing as the new production Exchange server is working fine, is it safe to power off and remove the old server? *I should probably note that this is not an Edge Transport server. There was an upgrade to Exchange 2013 at some point in the past, and there is only one functioning Exchange server now.

• Start ELEVATED script from within script

  Hallo, I'm playing around with Powershell (relative NewBie) and I'm looking for the easiest way to call a Powershell script with elevated rights from within another script. I know of the runas verb for start-process which allows me to start a new script with a different account. My problem is, however, that under Vista (UAC active) every admin account has two access tokens, a normal privilege one and an elevated one. If I use the runas method, the second scripts gets started under the right account but with the non-elevated access token. Is there an easy way to control this? Thanks a lot for your help! Ulrich

• Can you have a staging and production slot in Azure Websites

  I'm looking at hosting 3 Websites (there will all use the same linked database resource but I think I have to use 3 websites within Azure for this); www.website.com, provider.website.com and admin.website.com. Using Windows Azure Websites, can you have a Staging, Production slot? I think this feature is only available to Azure Cloud Services but there is little documentation on this. If its not possible, other than spinning up 3 more sites to act as the staging sites is there another way? I want the ability to "swap" from staging to production.

• Group policy doesn't let me execute Chrome

  Where I work, the admins just migrated us to Windows 7. They gave me admin rights but still, I had to "Run as Administrator" my Google Chrome installation. After I managed to install it, I realized I even have to go through the "Run as Administrator" shortcut every time I have to execute the application. I even edited the properties of the shortcut to check "Always run as Administrator" but nothing changed. The message I get when I'm trying to launch Chrome is "This program is blocked by group policy. For more information contact your system administrator"... Is it something I could work out alone or I have to convince them to change the "policy"?

• Windows 7 migration: How to move application settings?

  Migrating from WindowsXP Home to Windows 7 Pro. The last bit that I'm stuck on is migrating application settings, such as the settings for Opera, Firefox, MSN Messenger, and others. On the XP system, this all seems to be in "user/Local Settings" and "user/Application Data". On the Windos 7 system, there is a "user/AppData" folder as well as "user/Application Data" and "user/Local Settings". When I try to access "Application Data" and "Local Settings" on Windows 7, I get an "Access Denied" error (even though my user is an admin). So... if I can't copy my application settings files to "Application Data" and "Local Settings" on Windows 7, where to I copy them to?

• Mac OS X 10.6 executable not found without full path

  I just installed Apache via MacPorts. It seems that my Mac was absolutely confused about which version of the Apache executables to run. After moving the Apache executables that ship with the Mac to a directory that is not listed in the PATH variable, trying to run the httpd built by MacPorts fails even though the correct directory (/opt/local/apache2/bin) is listed in the PATH variable. If I navigate to the directory /opt/local/apache2/bin and type the command httpd I still get the error message -bash: httpd: command not found If I type the command with the full path /opt/local/apache2/bin/httpd it works fine. I've run the command alias to see if something was clashing but the only thing listed is: alias wget='curl -O' How do I find what is intercepting the command and preventing the executable being found in the directory, even when I'm inside the same directory?   Ok, this is my first time with windows server os. I started doing this out of curiosity. I have a desktop running windows server os 2003 which is connected to a wifi router. I have a laptop that connects to this router wirelessly and THIS REPRESENTS A REMOTE USER. I want to provide access to this user to a set of files ON THE SERVER. So i create an account for this user, as Start - programs - admin tools -user manager and then the steps to create an account. When i use this laptop, i log in as administrator as its the default account that came. Now when i want this laptop to be the user i just created on the server, HOW DO I DO THAT?

• SQL 2008. I have user in a db which has no login on the server. How is it possible?

I dont have access to the server adming rights but a dbadmin sent me screenshot where my user is not in the logins of the server. and also there is only one windows group called admin - databases which I am 100% sure my guy cannot be part of it. BUT... his username is in users of my db... How come user can appear in a db not having login on the server? P.S. in the logs it prints: Login failed for user 'xxxx'. Reason: Token-based server access validation failed with an infrastructure error. Check for previous errors

• Can an UPS be too powerful?

  Our old network admin bought the top range UPS a few months ago but never came around to setting it up and is no longer with the company. Now the old UPS broke down and needs to be replaced, but an external company that did an audit said that that UPS won't work. Now we are no hardware specialists, but the difference in specs is a higher output from 5A to 8.8A meaning a higher output. But isn't the UPS supposed to give the server the required output anyway? This 'independent' audit does sell its own hardware including UPSes so I'm not sure how much bias they have. Is there a reason why we can't replace the old broken UPS with the new more powerful one? Is there a way we can check to see if the UPS works with our server? ok, i wrote down the numbers again, the Volts and Amps are what are on the back (where you connect up the plugs which seem diffrent from on the front label.) old one APC SmartUPS 1500 220-240V -- 6.8A new one Dell UPS 1920W 250V -- 10A

• SQL Server 2008 data migration to another SQL 2008 server

  I am currently running SQL server 2008 (SQLserverold) which homes databases for systemn center Service Manager 2012 Datawarehouse. This server is very old and needs to be decommisioned. Prior to decomissioning the serve, the databases have to be migrated to another clustered SQL server with two nodes(SQLServer1 and SQLserver2). I am not a DB admin no experience in SQL, and I have been given the task of migrating the Databases on the old server to the new custered environmnet. • Connect macbook to my LAN through a VPN - best solution? [closed]

  So I have a LAN connected via a ADSL/PPPoA, this is using a bog-standard DLink router supplied by my ISP (talktalk UK). I have a NAS within the LAN that is running FreeNAS and I want to be able to connect to it when I'm out and about. It's running an atom so it's quite low on juice consumption but I don't want to have it on all day and night so I've been waking it via a magic packet and booting it down from the web admin when I need it. So I want to connect to the LAN, I presume via a VPN, to be able to send a magic packet. But what is the best method to accomplish this, or is there an easier way? I've been looking at the cisco 857 integrated router and the Netgear prosafe 318(behind modem) but not sure If I'm on the right track with what I want to achieve as I've not much experience or knowledge with VPN's or networking (software engineering student). I have tried port forwarding but to no avail, either with magic packets or even connecting outside the LAN via DYNDNS. Thanks,
