• Remove dual boot screen

  some time ago i bought an SSD and since i had to reinstall windows i bought windows 8 with it. I kept windows 7 on my old HDD and i installed Windows 8 on the SSD. For some time i had both, and a dual boot screen would allow me to switch between them. But now i deleted the windows 7 partition and merged it to the partition where i keep all my files, movies etc. But i still have the dual boot screen showing up with windows 8 and windows 7 options. How can i remove the dual boot screen and just make it boot to windows 8?

• Putting two physical hard drives in a single 2.5" bay?

  My crazy brain came up with this ridiculous idea. "Why can't I have a single 2.5" drive device that actually contains two independent hard drives? I want RAID 1 data mirroring and the security of having redundant drives. This is a thing that must exist!" To be clear, I am not asking if I can somehow shoehorn two 2.5" drives into a single bay, replace an optical drive with an additional HDD, or anything like that. What I have in mind is a single 2.5"-form-factor device that houses two independent hard drives, with separate housings (likely) and distinct controllers. Probably all they'd need to share is the power & SATA connections. Probably no such thing exists, but because I know there exist hard drives the physical size of a stack of postage stamps (roughly), I have to ask.

  Normal HDD costs go up very little as drives get larger. For example, an average 1TB drive costs a little under $90, 2TB costs a little over $100, and a 3TB drive costs close to $150. For HDDs, the cost per GB goes down as the number of GB goes up. SSD costs don't work like this: a 128GB SSD goes for $120ish, 256GB goes for $250ish, and 512GB drives get up to $600. The cost per GB goes up as the number of GB rises. What is it about SSDs that makes them so much costlier as they get larger?

• HDDs randomly falling off raid

  I really need help on this it's Saturday long weekend.No customer service help:( .I recently build new server/light duty desktop.Main purpose is only file sharing.Raid configuration :Adaptec 6805 ,8x 3TB HDD WD Red,Intel RES2SV240 expander,Raid 6,set in Intel mobo DZ 77GA-70K.I upgraded firmwares, but I'm having strange problem. During Build Verify segment 7 got missing.I just reinsert drive into hot swap bay and it started to rebuild Array.After rebuild was done another segments 0 and 5 gone missing while build/verify.I reinserted drives and now I'm praying that raid is going to rebuild successfully from remaining 6 drives,because i already transfer some data on it(I know it was bad idea).I checked S.M.A.R.T on missing drives , it only says link failure and aborted commands on one of them.No Errors on HDDs.Connections and cables are good.I added 2 fans blowing on RAID controller because it was getting too hot, so I guess overheating shouldn't be issue.What can be possibly wrong?   Ok so i used xp for years before i was able to get my hands on the Windows7 RC which i bought a new HDD for, and then followed the process to dual-boot. About a month ago xp started acting funny and i thought the disk might be dying. So i started using Windows7 all the time. Today i start the computer and it cant find the disk which xp was on anymore. I guess its dead. So i remove the xp HD and my computer cant start...insert bootable disk or something similar So how can i remove the primary(dead) xp disk and boot straight to Windows 7?

• Is my laptop good enough to support my development needs? [closed]

  I have an ASUS Pentium-R Dual Core CPU running at 2.20Ghz. It has 4 gb of built in ram, currently running a 64 bit Windows 7 . I just started graduate school and Im wondering whether I should go in for a new laptop or just repair the nagging battery on my current one. My requirements include - -Ability to support IDE's - I may end up running Eclipse, Visual Studio's and the like to help with my work. - Ability to run multiple VM's (not concurrently). Im currently running a Ubuntu 12 and 9 as VM's (not sure if this is overloading the system) - I'm a non gamer so I really dont care about a minor glitch caused by running a uber heavy game. -In addition I will have heavy use of Office Application Software and will be using my computer to watch movies and stream media. • OS X Leopard (10.5) Server -- Unwanted Emails

  Our OS X Leopard (10.5) server is sending out an email EVERY DAY for a Disk Full Notification on an external HDD we use for Time Machine backups (which manages it's own disk space, so the disk full notifications are useless). In the Server Admin app, under Settings Notifications, there's this: which is clearly disabled. The email header and message: http://pastebin.com/V5PZ3Phk I've been told to check the mail.log, but it's mostly empty (except for a few logs in 2011 saying "Postfix mail system is not running". I've also been told to check the crontabs, but I'm not sure how to do that on OS X (or any OS for that matter). Can someone explain how to do this? Also, if there's any other suggestions on places/things/etc to look at/for, my ears are all open!

  Hello All, I want to ensure I have done all I can to configure a system's disks for serious database use. The three areas I know of (any others?) to be concerned about are: I/O size: the database engine and disk's native size should either match, or the database's native I/O size should be a multiple of the disk's native I/O size. Disks that are capable of Direct Memory Access (eg. IDE) should be configured for it. When a disk says it has written data persistently, it must be so! No keeping it in cache and lying about it. I have been looking for information on how to ensure these are so for CENTOS and Ubuntu, but can't seem to find anything at all! I want to be able to check these things and change them if needed. Any and all input appreciated.

  Hi, I have a system that has to be formatted often because of the specific use of it (Use it in internet cafe). I have to install the drivers and apps each time. That is a time consuming and cumbersom task for me. I want to install windows, drivers, apps etc. once and create a backup of the entire C:\ drive, and keep it in a linux partition so that I can restore the OS with all the apps & drivers ready to go! I have ubuntu live CD with me and I have created a linux partition (ext4) in the HDD. My question is: How can I create an image of the C:\ drive (ntfs disk) in Ubuntu and store it in the linux partition?

• What does the NTFS encryption protect against?

  I have encrypted a folder from the (PropertiesAdvancedEncrypt contents to secure data). However when I change my user profile to another one which is also an administrator the folder seems to be accessible as if nothing happened. What exactly does this encryption protect against. I'm looking to encrypt folders that no other user, or another OS or even if the HDD were to be removed and plugged to another device will be accessible. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate. Any suggestions?

• Will an SSD help prevent laptop overheating?

  My laptop has a severe overheating problem, even though it's quite new (< 6 month). It's still regularly overheating to the point where it shuts down. This usually happens while playing games but sometimes while watching videos or using Skype video calls for a long time. I'm already keeping it mid-air on a cooling tray with 2 external coolers, but that doesn't seem to help. The only other thing I can think of is installing an SSD instead of the current HDD. I've read up that they generate less heat then hard drives, but can it actually make a serious difference to the heat level of the laptop? If there are any other suggestions, please feel free to comment. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L650D-11R.

• How to make the Eclipse text editor background transparent?

  Is there a way to make the background of Eclipse IDE text editor transparent? I would like to adjust the alpha transparency of the background, but have the text still be opaque. Perhaps there is a plugin that accomplishes this? I haven't seen any options under preferences. And my search on Google has ended in vain thus far, although I did find some nice color themes. Example (Textmate): Note that the text is still solid. This is important, since making the whole window transparent could cause text to bleed into the desktop wallpaper (or whatever is under Eclipse). On another side note, I'm using the latest version of Eclipse (Helios), on both Windows 7 and Fedora 14.   I am on a low budget right now. I am currently in the process of starting a computer company. I am in need of a VPN network so I can run Dameware tools for working on customers/partners computers remotely. I will be working with Windows and some Apple and linux machines. I have desktop with an AMD Phenom II 965BE(currently running stable at 3.8Ghz) processor with 8 GB of ram and a radeon hd 6870(i know graphics aren't too useful) and about 1.5TB of HDD space. I am attempting to create a network out of my office based all on one machine that would also be secure for me to remotely connect to my partners computers so when they have issues I would be able to connect and do the diagnosing and repairs remotely. What types of servers besides a VPN server would i need to create this? I have access to all Microsoft products so I can run Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, or any other Microsoft Software. thanks for the help all

  Buying a laptop is always hard work and questions about specific models dont age well on forums. A popular dilema (especially with apple macbooks) is whether to spend more for a faster cpu and graphics card but settle for standard ram and hd OR drop down and spend the savings on more ram and a faster harddrive such as a ssd. Im wondering for web development i.e. ide, unit tests, photoshop work and some user testing screen capturing now and again what would provide better performance. ( No games, music production or spielberg standard video editing.) For examples sake the current apple lineup for their 15inch macbookpros. 2.66 cpu i7 4gb ram 5400rpm drive 4gig ram vs 2.4 cpu i5 8gb ram 124gb sdd roughly the same price.

• Dropping Cached Memory on FreeBSD

  i use FreeNAS server which is built on OS version FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p6. I use ZFS file system with 13TB HDD on my 8GB physical ram installed box. It almost uses all of RAM installed while proccessing some request. However, it still uses same amount of memory on idle times. So this is becoming a problem sometimes. On my centos web server; i use following command to drop cached memory with a cronjob; sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches However, this command does not work on my Freenas server. How can i drop cached memory on my FreeNAS box which is built on FreeBSD 8.2 Thank you

• Weird noise coming out on Windows 7 when harddisk activity at peak?

  I'm having a very strange problem. I'm hearing a "choooooooooo kkkrrr" sound (Its not like the normal sound speakers make when powered on) all the time. When there is more Hard Disk r/w activity the sound increases and as HDD r/w activity slows down so the sound. I have two other OS installed on my system. I have tested, it only happens when I'm on Windows 7. I have no clue what the hell is happening !? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Default install. I've tried to add shared folder from command line - it does not work. How to enable shared folders or raw disk access? I have created new Windows 8 64 bit template from scratch - I cannot use physical HDD either, and no SharedFolder option. I think this is something about security policy of remote server.

• Computer restarts infinitely after Bios/Motherboard screen

  Like every morning I turn on my computer (which is kinda new and only couple months old) and I never had any issue with it until now. It starts booting, shows that very first screen which has some motherboard picture and stuff and then it show which buttons to press to enter BIOS and etc. Then it suddenly restarted and after that just kept restarting every 3-5 seconds forever. What could that be? I unplugged power cable, checked all the cables, moved a case, it had some wires stuck under it, blew some dust (but didn't open the case yet) and I tried to boot again and it booted successfully and I am writing this issue now. My specs: i3-3220 3.30Ghz 8GB DDR3 RAM 1TB HDD GeForce GTX 650 Windows 8 x64 I also recently upgraded my security software (that's the most recent thing I did) and it includes ZoneAlarm firewall, Comodo Antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy. But maybe it doesn't have anything to do with this. Cheers

• Western Digital Caviar SE16 not recognized

  Before I start, I have been looking at quite a few websites and I still have not found an answer to my problem. I have been building my own computer recently and I have just received the hard drive (WD Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS) I was planning to put in my computer. After connecting the SATA power cable (99.99999% sure it is connected correctly) and the SATA cable to my motherboard (ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3) I booted my computer into a Linux Mint 13 XFCE 64-bit live USB expecting to see a hard drive when I came to install. Sadly when I checked the only hard drive that was showing was /dev/sda which was my USB with the Linux files on it. I also checked gparted and no hard drive other than my USB was showing up there either. Lastly I checked my BIOS and no matter what SATA port I connected the HDD to it wouldn't show up there either. The ram could do with another 4GB, for which I am thinking of replacing the 2x2GB for 2x4GB of the same type. My video card is struggling with the latest releases, so vitally should I ditch the video card and go for something newer (ATI 7850, GTX 660?) or try and get another 5850 for crossfire support? Bearing in mind 5850's are sort of hard to come buy now as they are not stocked in shops usually, which means they have to be bought second hand.

• "Missing operating system" even when booting from Linux Live CD: hardware problem?

  My parents' computer stopped booting from the HDD into Windows: it's showing a "Missing operating system" error. I tried burning a Live CD of the latest Ubuntu and booting from that, but it's giving me the same error. I know the Live CD works (I can boot my laptop from it). It does seem to be actually trying to boot from the CD (when I boot with the CD in it takes longer to get to the error message than if I boot with the CD out, or if I change the BIOS boot order to skip the CD drive; and the CD drive light is active during that time). Might this be a hardware problem? Are there common problems I can look for that might cause this?

• Visual Studio 2012 intermittent lockup

  Visual Studio 2012 intermittently locks up on me. I notice that devenv.exe jumps to 50% CPU utilization. The CPU stays at this level for a few minutes and then drops. While its at 50% utilization I can still use the IDE. However, intermittently it stops responding (as though it was performing some sort of background process). It only lasts for a few seconds. Also this happens when debugging. I'm running under Windows 7 and I'm using Telerik controls. I've disabled add-ins and extensions and have had no success. Any ideas would be appreciated? Thanks

• Too Much Swapping, even though RAM is 2/3 Empty

  I have a VPS with 9GB RAM, 300GB HDD, 3 GB Swap, 7 Cores. The OS is CentOS 5.7 Final. I have postgres9.0 running on my machine, with proper tuning done (at least by book/wiki of PostgreSQL). What happens is most of the times when some complex query run (by complex I mean select with maximum 3 Joins), eventhough 66% of my RAM is unused there is ~99% swapping is happening. Plus it screws up my disk IO which is most of the time reaching ~100% and slows down everything else. (I tend to believe something's wrong with my disk.) I dont understand the reason of this much of swapping happening. Is it because of context switching?? Most of the time my processors are idle, while the IO wait goes upto 30% during pick times. Would appreciate if some can shed some light on it. Thanks.

  I'm curious to know, when I bought a brand new laptop there are limitations to create or change the HDD partitions, except the following partitions: c:\ drive (Main partition + OS drive) NTFS. 400 Gb. Recovery drive NTFS. 15 Gb. Tools drive FAT32. 2 Gb. System drive NTFS. 0.3 Gb. My questions are: How do manufacturers restrict HDDs ? What is the term for these restrictions? Can this be applied to desktop PCs? Is it possible to modify the restrictions by an end-user?
