• What is the best technical ebook reader? [closed]

  This is subjective and likely to be closed down. But still I am asking in hope of some answers. I am plannning to buy an ebook reader. I just wanted an opinion of other fellow programmers on which is the most suitable ebook reader for the technical book? I should be able to read codes properly in the reader without any formatting issues. Any suggesstions? PS : Will tablets like Kindle fire or samsung tab 2 will work? Any other options?

• Connected to Access Point but no internet connection?

  I am trying to use my school's WPA Enterprise network to access the internet with my Three-OS laptop. I currently have Windows7, Ubuntu11.10 and Backtrack5 installed. I can use my home's WPA2 network without any issues with the 3 OS. I can successfully connect to my school's network with the 3 OS but I can only browse the internet with windows7. Ubuntu network-manager and Backtrack WICD both say that I am connected to the Acces Point but I cannot browse the internet. I have tried uninstalling network-manager and installing WICD but it did not solve the problem. Every time I connect to the Access Point, I am able to browse the internet for about 10 seconds. I have tried disabling IPV6 I have tried changing DNS.

• How can I generate Sudoku puzzles?

  I'm trying to make a Sudoku puzzle generator. It's a lot harder than I expected and the more I get into it, the harder it gets! My current approach is to split the problem into 2 steps: Generate a complete (solved) Sudoku puzzle. Remove numbers until it's solveable and has only 1 solution. In step 1, since I'm using a brute force methods, I'm facing some run time issues. Is there an optimal way of filling in a complete Sudoku puzzle? In step 2, what kind of algorithm should I use to "puzzlize" a solved sudoku?

• Logitech Wireless Keyboard & mouse not working aftesr upgrade to 12.04?

  I upgraded my Dell Dimension 9200C to 12.04 Precise Pangolin with no issues, I ran it fine for a night but when I went back in a couple days later my Logitech Wireless Keyboard K350 and M510 mouse weren't active when booted. I can boot into an older version from the main the boot screen the mouse and keyboard work, but the network stack is gone. It says the networking manager on this version is not compatible. I'm scratching my head, it isn't the mouse and keyboard, they work fine on my dual boot, and they load fine in Knoppix. They did work fine on 12.04 for 1 night. Open to suggestions before I re-install completely.

• Disable new invisible border feature? (ruins compiz grid)

  A new feature was added recently that adds an invisible border around the windows to grab for resizing (although i thought the new resize grip solved any big issues). This annoys me because it destroys the usefulness of the grid plugin of compiz.. i'm not sure if the border is part of compiz or gnome, but i'd like to know how to disable it. i couldn't find any options in ccsm or the window settings in gnome. See the screenshot to see how much waste is caused. These windows should match up instead of having blank space surrounding all of them.

• How well supported is the ATI graphics on a Sony VAIO SA?

  This is the first time i will be buying a laptop/desktop to use as a Ubuntu platform with ATI. Now i did notice a while back that ATI drivers were not in cahoots with Linux as of yet. I am just wondering if any one is still experiencing ATI issues, or this is no longer the case. I am looking to spend money on a laptop Upgrade, but I don't want to spend a screw load of money just to find out I can only use windows and my Graphics driver does not work. • Is it a good idea to always use Google as the first step to solving a problem? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Importance of learning to google efficiently for a programmer? Avoiding lengthy discussions, as a senior level student in CS, how can I get away from Googling problems I run into? I find myself using it too much; I seemingly reach for the instant answer and then blindly copy and paste code, hoping it works. Anyone can do that. I've read the related threads about being a better programmer, but mostly those recommend practicing on pet projects, which I have done, but again I feel EVERY wall encountered, from design through completion, was hurdled with Google. Do professionals instantly "research" their problem? Or do you guys step back and try and figure it out yourselves? I'm talking about both 'algorithm/design' problems as well as compiler issues.

  Last week, I had the opportunity to talk about Java EE 7 in Nancy (Lorrraine - France) and Kiev (Ukraine). The first event was arranged by the local Lorraine JUG while the second one was a largest conference organised by the Ukraine Java User Group. Based on the overall feedback and discussions I had during those two events, it is clear that the WebSocket API (JSR 356) is really a hot topic.   Distributions in the *Ubuntu ecosystem support proper RGB subpixel rendering in Mono based applications (e.g. Banshee) by default, i.e. out of the box without any additional configuration requirements, whereas e.g. Fedora does not. I am aware of general patent infringement issues and the freetype-freeworld libs, but never managed to enable RGB subpixel rendering for Mono in Fedora - it keeps using greyscale. So, as the question title implies: how does *Ubuntu achieve RGB subpixel rendering in Mono applications?

  Its been 2 years since graduating from uni and working in a IT solutions company as a programmer. My initial year was particularly exciting when we were trying to get a fresh product up to speed. The product has now gone live and are in the maintenance phase. My current day job involves merely bug fixing and also small designing/implementing change requests and also helping resolve issues faced from clients. Slowly I feel a little 'normal' in my role. I wonder how I can make myself stand out. (I work in a company of no more than 200 people) Or what should be the next step I take after 2 years doing programming? Thanks!

• Impact of migrating home page from http to https on search results

  Guys - I've just had to change one of my site's home page to https from http. I had plenty links coming into the http page and was performing well in Google against many of my targeted search phrases. I did a 301 redirect from the http page to transfer the link juice to the https page (and to prevent duplicate content issues), but my search rankings have tanked which indicates no link juice has been transferred. My PR has vanished - which I'd expect - but I'm really surprised that the SERP rankings fell off the face of the earth. Anyone have any ideas how I can recover this. I've waited a couple of months since the changes took effect just in case Google was taking time to check it out.

  I got stocked passing parameter to one master page for some reasons, seems the page lifecycle and dynamic loading of the master pages has got some issues with defining public properties in the masterpage within my project. It did not set my values and as a result, properties became useless. A collegue just mentioned using HttpContext. have a look what  MSDN saying "Encapsulates all HTTP-specific information about an individual HTTP request" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.httpcontext.aspx HttpContext.Current.Items["ParameterName"] Also, Page.Items could do the same thing. Page.Items, "Gets a list of objects stored in the page context" http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.page.items.aspx as your master page and content page are rendered as a single document anyway.

• Disabling eth0 Module on a Macbook Aluminum

  The Ubuntu page for my device states the following at the bottom (Known Issues) PowerTOP reports that the module for the 10/100/1000 interface wakes the processor 100+x/sec, accounting for 50% of wakeups on an idle system. This dramatically shortens battery life. One potential solution is to unload this module if you only use wireless. I only use wireless, but I could not find instructions to "unload the module". I have a feeling if I try something related to this, but not the same, battery life will not improve and my eth0 won't work. Anyone have a good guide on this?

• Ubuntu thinks I have two displays

  When I first installed Ubuntu I noticed that my mouse would flicker a lot, which caused me to investigate. I remembered back when I ran Fedora I had an issue where it thought I had two displays (hp-dv7 4285dx laptop). In Fedora, this didn't cause any issues. In Ubuntu, it causes the mouse the flicker a lot. The fix I've been using is to just go into settings displays and disable the display that doesn't actually exist. The only problem is that this is not permanent. Each time I start up Ubuntu, I have to go back in and disable this display. They're each just titled "Built-in Display", and have the same resolution. My laptop does have two graphics cards: one on-board and one dedicated. I'm not sure if maybe that is causing is an issue? Any guidance towards this would be great. Thanks!

• xubuntu keyboard application shortcuts not working

  I am using the latest Xubuntu 13.04 with Xfce 4.10. I have issues while setting "Application Shortucts' from 'Settings Manager Keyboard Application Shortcuts'. Not all custom keyboards shortcuts, which I have added, work. Some do, some don't. Example the command 'xdotool key XF86AudioPause' works perfect from cmdline, but not when I assign this as a shortcut to some key, say 'F11'. Have tried to Google about this, but found nothing. Kindly help. If possible, kindly provide me a cmdline way to set a keyboard shortcut

• No sound/audio after resuming from sleep

  I've made a fresh UEFI install of Ubuntu 13.10 (64 bit) on a Lenovo Ideapad Z510 laptop with Intel i5 4200M processor. Ubuntu is the only OS installed on the computer, secure boot disabled. Everythings works fine (backlight issue fixed after editing rc.local file), the only minor trouble I have is resuming the laptop from "sleep" mode. If I close the lid and then wake the laptop opening it again, there is no audio/sound. I need to restart the computer (not even logging out helps). If I suspend the computer in a graphical way (not closing the lid): gearwheel in top right of the screen -- suspend and wake it up/turning on, audio works with no issues. Ideas how to fix this? Thanks!

• Where to start when digging into an existing J2EE codebase?

  I work for a company that produces enterprise applications to be used by schools and districts to manage all of their tests and standards data. Their existing application is written in J2EE and is very large. I personally am a seasoned PHP and Ruby = RoR developer and I have been asked to attempt to implement easily added but crucial features to an existing J2EE codebase. I am very familiar with Java SE and know the architecture of a web application well. What I am asking for is, will this suffice for the task ahead and what tips can you give me in digging into the code base and actually efficiently adding these new features? Is there anything important I need to know before beginning and what can I expect in terms of problems and issues coming from a Java SE, PHP, RoR background? Time isn't too much of an issue, I should have plenty of time to familiarize myself with J2EE.Please also note, syntax will not be a problem here.

• 12.04 freezes on install

  I'm new to ubuntu and can't for the life of me understand how to get around this issue. I'm having a problem where when I insert the boot disk that i burned for 12.04, it loads and gives me the language option and select an installation type, i select either try ubuntu / install ubuntu and it begins to load. Then after about 5 mintues of the purple screen with the dots under the UBUNTU it freezes the whole computer, and the only way to get out is to turn off the laptop with the power button. I have read previous threads saying people had similar "freezing" issues including ones that mention my model of laptop, HP Pavillion DV1000. But it appears their problems are post installation and relate to their wireless cards. I have tried changing the boot options (F6) and I am totally stuck. Can anyone shed any light on to this issue? The reason you got error is that SharePoint 2010 Administration is not started, so to fix it you just need to start the services. Problem: Solution: To fix the issues, you need to start the SharePoint 2010 Administration service. 1. Go to services control panel. 2. Start the SharePoint 2010 Administration service. 3. Rerun your PowerShell, it should fix the problem. • 3TB non-boot hard disk on older motherboard

  It is time to expand the capacity of my Ubuntu home file server so I would like to purchase some 3TB hard disks. However, I am concerned with potential compatibility issues. I've tried searching around but I haven't found information which clearly addresses my particular situation. My server is running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Intel P35 chipset based system. The motherboard does not support UEFI (and, by extension, GPT?). However, Ubuntu does support 2TB disks. Will I be able to properly utilize these new disks, or does the motherboard limitation trump all else? The boot disk is <2TB and will not be updated nor am I dual-booting; these disks will be used strictly as slaves in a pure Ubuntu environment. I'd hate to pull the trigger on these new disks just to be unpleasantly surprised, so any feedback is appreciated. Thanks!
