• Opinion for my recruitment portal idea [closed]

  I am creating a recruitment portal for IT professionals. In this, recruiters while creating a job post would be asked to create a skills requirement matrix. Essential Skills : asp.net MVC Entity Framework Desired Skills : SQL Server 2008 IIS 7.0 On the other hand job seekers would also have their own skills matrix Jobseeker #1 Core Skills : asp.net MVC Entity Framework MangoDB Secondary Skills : SQL Server 2008 IIS 7.0 Jobseeker #2 Core Skills : asp.net Web forms Secondary Skills : SQL Server 2008 IIS 7.0 So when both job seekers apply for the same job. Would it be a good idea for both of them to see each other's skills matrix for comparison?Also no personal details and CVs are shared. • failure to restore backup from deja dup

  I had ubuntu 12.04.1 and I made a backup with deja dup of the home folder in an external hard disk. Today I installed ubuntu 14.4 and erased the ubuntu 12.04.1. Now I'm trying to restore my back up. First it ask where is the back up to restore, then it ask of what date to restore, and then it starts, after a wile ask for the password. I put the password and it says Restoring and stays in preparing with out any advancement. Don't show any error, just stays preparing. The window of details is in white. I had all my documents... it's very bad for me, all my personal data... lost? Thanks for any help, Layla.

After an upgrade, you always want to make sure that the compatibility options (which have much to do with how NULLs and other objects are treated) is at what you expect. For the most part, as long as the application can handle it, I set my compatibility levels to the latest version. For SQL Server 2008, that was “10.0” or “10”. You can do this with the ALTER DATABASE command or you can just right-click the database and select “Properties” and then “Database Options” in SQL Server Management Studio. To check the database compatibility level, I use this query: SELECT name, cmptlevel FROM sys.sysdatabases When I did that this morning I saw that the databases (all of them) were at 10.0 – not 10.5 like the Instance. That’s expected – we didn’t revise the database format up with the Instance for this particular release. Didn’t want to catch you by surprise on that. While your databases should be at the “proper” level for your situation, you can’t rely on the compatibility level to indicate the Instance level. • Name user object and user table correctly

  It's maybe simple but I think about this every time I build a new application. How do you name the class for the current user of the application and for the orm class of the user table? Usually I have something like CurrentUser: Logged-in user, stored in session, info for last activity etc User: ORM Class (C# EF CodeFirst, but it doesn't matter) And yes, they could have the same name in different namespaces, but I don't really like that.

• Value of links on negative review pages

  A general assumption with SEO is more links = higher rankings. What I would like to know is does Google know what those links are referring to. I.e. if somebody gives a product a good review on their personal blog and links the review to another companies website (who are selling the product), would Google take consideration for the review/description link. Essentially would Google know that this link refers to a product. So if somebody is looking to buy a product, Google would know to include this page because the previous link said it sells products rather than just having information on products. Then to take this further, does Google know if a link is positive or negative. For example, If somebody creates a post saying, do not visit example.com, example.com is bad because of blah blah blah. Would Google know that the link is getting bad feedback and therefore would it have a negative affect on rankings, or would Google go oh its just another link and give it better rankings?

• Struck with a serious issue when upgrading to ubuntu 13.10 from 13.04

  I installed ubuntu 13.04 alongside windows xp professional. When I tried to upgrade to 13.10 from 13.04, it took some time to download and then it started cleaning the files and then message was displayed that xp cleaned (this msg was seen by my younger brother and then he cut the power off) . Now the computer when starts displays this screen and I dont know how to proceed. To anyone giving solution I would like tell you that I prefer xp over linux(personal reasons). So is there any way to get out of this problem, neithet I can open xp nor linux?

  Plenty of sentiment exists that measuring commits is inappropriate. Has any study been done that tries to draw in more sources than commits - such as: browsing patterns IDE work (pre-commit) idle time multitasking I can't think of an easy way to do these measures, but I wonder if any study has been done. On a personal note, I do believe that reflection on one's own 'metrics' could be valuable regardless of (or in the absence of) using these for performance eval. I.E. an un-biased way to reflect on your habits. But this is a discussion matter beyond Q&A.

• Can other domain registrars view non-public whois information?

  If my domains are hosted at a registrar (lets take Gandi, for example) and it has privacy protection on the whois information, can another ICANN-accredited registrar (GoDaddy, for example) still view my actual information that is behind the privacy guard? i.e. I don't have a GoDaddy account. But, since they are ICANN-accredited, could they access the real whois info without the privacy protection?

I have an open stream between client and server, and client will send a JSON string (encrypted to bytes) to the server each 3 to 5 seconds. How can I write to the Socket OutputStream so that I can read each JSON string in the server. I'm guessing I need to specify some kind of end of file or something, but can't find any info on how to achieve this.

• Languages with similar features to JavaFX Script

  I just completed a small project in JavaFX, only finding that it has been declared dead by Oracle. JavaFX Script actually seemed to be a pretty interesting language with some neat features for its domain, particularly with bind for data binding and on replace for triggered events. These features actually make the language very useful for small, quick, RIA type apps, which leads to my question: Are there any mainstream languages with features similar to bind and on replace? After working with JavaFX, I got some ideas for some small personal (academic) projects that could take advantage of these features, but I would prefer to not start anything new in a language considered extinct by its owners.

• New website, plans to go large. How do you protect yourself?

  I'm planning to create a new site that (in hopes) will make it to a decent state of popularity and use. I have made sites before, but they weren't serious, with any intended purpose other than personal and friend use. I've never been able to find a solid post on good steps to protecting yourself, and your site/idea before you start. This site will always be free, and will not be bringing it any revenue by ads or whatnot, but I plan to in the future and would want to make I'm in the clear legally for one. Do you need to copyright anything? Or anything of the same concept as copyright? Do I make an LLC to operate it under? Apologies for this extremely poorly written question, basically I want to be both legal, and I want to make sure nobody can just rip my idea or name(s). • Wireless network unstable and often WPA2 protected networks just don't work

  I have an issue with my wireless network,so that the connection is working for only a few minutes, after which my browser no longer is able to load pages, even if the wireless is still active/connected. Furthermore, most of the time WPA2-personal protected networks don't work, (yesterday was the first time it worked - for a few minutes). By "don't work" I mean that it seems to successfully connect, but the browser can't load pages. I am running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit, and my wireless card is a RaLink rt3090. No changes have been done to any settings since Ubuntu was installed - networking began working on its own after the installation - but as described in first paragraph not very well.

• Rationale behind freeware projects

  I've seen some freeware projects in the past where the author(s) invested a significant amount of their personal time and resources and never even considered charging for the software. A lot of these projects were donation based, and from what I've heard, donationware can never be a viable business model (even to simply support development costs) because most people choose not to donate if given an option. A lot of these projects eventually shut down because their authors could not sustain them further. Granted, some people simply like making the community happy (or something), but if you're struggling to keep your project alive, why not charge some small amount such as $10 simply to stay operational? If people find your software useful (and a lot of people found those projects VERY useful) they won't have a problem paying such a small amount. The question is: if you have a popular app that people like and download in great numbers, why not put a price tag on it? Why do it for free?

• initial Class design: access modifiers and no-arg constructors

  Context: Student working through Class design in personal/side project for Summer. I've never written anything implemented by others or had to maintain code. Trying to maximize encapsulation and imagining what would make code easy to maintain. Concept: Tight/Loose Class design where Tight and Loose refer to access modifiers and constructors. Tight: initially, everything, including setters, is private and a no-arg constructor is not provided (only a full constructor). Loose: not Tight Exceptions: the obvious like toString Reasoning: If code, at the very beginning, is tight, then it should be guaranteed that changes, with respect to access/creation, should never damage existing implementations. The loosening of code happens incrementally and must be thought through, justified, and safe (validated). Benefit: Existing implementing code should not break if changes are made later. Cost: Takes more time to create. Since this is my own thinking, I hope to get feedback as to whether I should push to work this way. Good idea or bad idea?

• How do I stop that launcher from popping up when mouse goes to the left edge?

  This is what it says on the help.ubuntu.com website, but when i go to system settings, it does not have a Launcher & Menus option. I wish I could revert back to the old Ubuntu, I hate this launcher. Does any know a fix plz? "Stop the launcher from showing when I point to the left side of the screen The launcher unhides when you move your mouse or touchpad pointer to the left side of the screen. • Sync active wallpaper/background between KDE and Gnome/Unity

  Is there solution using a utility or folder shortcuts that would keep the active desktop wallpaper/background the same in KDE and Gnome/Unity. (Changing the background in one desktop would also change the other desktop's wallpaper) I use both desktops because they both serve me better for different tasks, and i'd like to match LightDM login background for KDE as well. Regardless of that it would just be nice to accomplish this for personal consistency and unity. This is no heart breaker if it's not possible. It's just an extra couple of steps when I want to change my background. note: in KDE I disable ksplash
