  Here’s today’s dumb mistake: A value that was supposedly updated by a routine on one page, wasn’t changing on another ASP.NET screen. I carefully traced the progress of the update and everything looked right – all the way to the database. • Direct Code Support?

  A few times in the past I've hit a major wall and simply couldn't progress with a certain aspect of an app as Im a beginner and still learning the ropes (Objective-C specifically). I was curious if anyone knows of any services which support programmers in real time, paid or free and will over video, audio or text chat sit and work a problem out till its fixed and look through your code? I understand Stackoverflow does a super job at this! However Im in need of something a little more tailored where someone can spend a little time to sit and look and what Im dealing with and delve into my a code if need be. Thanks.

• Manual bootstrapping with Juju on VPS

  I recently bought a VPS (OpenVZ) with Ubuntu 13.04. Lately I've read about Juju and I thought it would match my needs on my brand new VPS as I want to easily configure Hadoop, Wordpress, Graphite and other services. I tried the juju-local approach but I got an error while installing it: http://paste.ubuntu.com/6373143/ So I got to #juju IRC channel and I was told to use "Manual bootstrapping" and create a question here in order to get more info as it seems is something under development. Could anybody help me getting Juju to work on my VPS? Did any had the same problem? Thanks in advance! EDIT: After some more research (and after reading my own question) I think I should clarify a little more the situation. What I want is a manual provider to allow me manage my VPS from Juju. I know there might be a work in progress and I would appreciate any info regarding it's state and any possible solution :)

• Open source projects, how to choose?!

  I would like to join an open source project since I think I am good enough at programming to progress onto reading others code and to modify it. But the proble mis, how would I choose an open source project to work on? I know many languages and chief ones that I am good are python, C++ (not really very good at C, the lack of object orientation is difficult for me) and Java. For c++, I am proficient wit Qt. I would like to start with something that isn't huge, and hasn't reached a phase where the bugs are so complicated it would take me a month to understand what affects the bug. Any suggestions? At the current time, I don't use any libraries in either of the mentioned libraries that I would need to modify (AFAIK).

• What would you think of a job based on mostly doing the proof of concept?

  I'm working as a developer in a small software company whose main job is interfacing between separate applications, like between a telephony system and an environment control system, between IP TVs and hospitality systems, etc...And it seems like I am the candidate for a new job title in the company, as the person who does the proof of concept of a new interfacing project and does some R&D for prototyping. What do you think the pros and cons of such a job would be, considering mainly the individual progress/regress of a person as a software engineer? And what aspects would you consider essential in a person to put him/her in such a job position?

• What are some reasonable stylistic limits on type inference?

  C++0x adds pretty darn comprehensive type inference support. I'm sorely tempted to use it everywhere possible to avoid undue repetition, but I'm wondering if removing explicit type information all over the place is such a good idea. Consider this rather contrived example: Foo.h: #include <set> class Foo { private: static std::set<Foo*> instances; public: Foo(); ~Foo(); // What does it return? Who cares! Just forward it! static decltype(instances.begin()) begin() { return instances.begin(); } static decltype(instances.end()) end() { return instances.end(); } }; Foo.cpp: #include <Foo.h> #include <Bar.h> // The type need only be specified in one location! // But I do have to open the header to find out what it actually is. decltype(Foo::instances) Foo::instances; Foo() { // What is the type of x? auto x = Bar::get_something(); // What does do_something() return? auto y = x.do_something(*this); // Well, it's convertible to bool somehow... if (!y) throw "a constant, old school"; instances.insert(this); } ~Foo() { instances.erase(this); } Would you say this is reasonable, or is it completely ridiculous? After all, especially if you're used to developing in a dynamic language, you don't really need to care all that much about the types of things, and can trust that the compiler will catch any egregious abuses of the type system. But for those of you that rely on editor support for method signatures, you're out of luck, so using this style in a library interface is probably really bad practice. I find that writing things with all possible types implicit actually makes my code a lot easier for me to follow, because it removes nearly all of the usual clutter of C++. Your mileage may, of course, vary, and that's what I'm interested in hearing about. What are the specific advantages and disadvantages to radical use of type inference?

• Shortest Common Superstring: find shortest string that contains all given string fragments

  Given some string fragments, I would like to find the shortest possible single string ("output string") that contains all the fragments. Fragments can overlap each other in the output string. Example: For the string fragments: BCDA AGF ABC The following output string contains all fragments, and was made by naive appending: BCDAAGFABC However this output string is better (shorter), as it employs overlaps: ABCDAGF ^ ABC ^ BCDA ^ AGF I'm looking for algorithms for this problem. It's not absolutely important to find the strictly shortest output string, but the shorter the better. I'm looking for an algorithm better than the obvious naive one that would try appending all permutations of the input fragments and removing overlaps (which would appear to be NP-Complete). I've started work on a solution and it's proving quite interesting; I'd like to see what other people might come up with. I'll add my work-in-progress to this question in a while.

• How agile methodologies can be applied in a typical " services " company?

  My company is a custom software services company for external clientes, which means our typical project is one in which the contract already states the full budget of the project. Our typical project starts by defining requirements (improving the proposal high-level requirements), then we code the project, test it and ship it. We have an acceptance phase were the client tests the software and in that phase we can usually implement small changes asked by the client, or we charge extra for change requests. In some projects we have intermediate releases so the clients can check the progress of the project and give feedback on it. In summary: something like waterfall... I've followed the "agile" movement for a bit now and I always see it being a good match for a "product" company, or a company building software for an internal client. But are there good stories / advantages on using agile methods in my kind of company/projects? What are your experiences, what do you think about this?

• Is there a comprehensive list of mupdf keyboard shortcuts?

  I like mupdf's speed, but I am exasperated by the lack of documentation and its (unnecessarily) hyper-minimal interface with not a menu bar or context menu in sight. Does there exist a list of keyboard shortcuts for this application? The link to the manual on the official site is dead. • Refactor or Concentrate on Completing App

  Would you refactor your app as you go or focus on completing app first? Refactoring will mean progress of app app will slow down. Completing app will mean you get a possibly very hard to maintain app later on? The app is a personal project. I don't really know how to answer "What drives the functionality and design", but I guess it's to solve inefficiencies in current software out there. I like minimal easy to use software too. So I am removing some features and add some that I feel will help.

• Page displaying sections using opacity in CSS3 but without navigating or scrolling down [closed]

  Here is my app - http://www.shalgreetings.com/ I am trying to override the scroll bar going down to a imagesection in CSS, so that whole app is visible with logo, header and other controls all the times when people navigate through different #sections. I am not sure where in the CSS, I am making the mistake as clicking on #sections traverses the page. Here is this app's original inspiration code, which has got this right. Anyone can point me where the problem seems to be in the above app?

• Ubuntu boots to black screen after failed upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10

  This happened when I tried to upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10. I don't know whether the upgrade process had completed downloading and installing packages or whether it was still in progress, but I got a message The application Compiz has closed unexpectedly. At that point, my mouse stopped working so I switched to tty1 by Ctrl+Alt+F1 and rebooted from there. I then found that I could not boot into Ubuntu any more. My screen stayed first purple then black. I went back to tty1 and it said I was running 12.10. I tried some suggestions in this thread on Ubuntuforums: Wubi blank purple screen than blank black screen and this one: How to set NOMODESET and other kernel boot options in grub2 but nothing seemed to work. I can boot Windows as normal. I am using Wubi on Windows7. My laptop is a Lenovo T410i with NVIDA NVS 3100m

I  have been using the .Net Framework mainly to develop ASP.NET WebApps for some years now and I am moving from using the .Net Framework 2.0 to using the latest features on the 4.x Frameworks, I am planning to document whenever is possible some of the stuff I learn using this space kindly given by the staff of the site. The feedback I get will also be very important for my progress and my plan is to learn a lot from what you guys can teach me with your comments on here.I also found myself with the necessity of putting somewhere code samples because sometimes when you post on forums the entries get locked and you can't do anything to add relevant details on them. The code will either be explained on its entirety or will be posted on a link that has an explained working sample for you guys to test and learn from.My posts will be in English, and I am an intermediate English speaker/writer so bare with me if it's not perfect sometimes, I am always learning something new though.I hope this get to be a useful resource for anyone interested. • Why does Ubuntu, sometimes, fails to load?

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my SONY VAIO VPCEH (with Windows 7 Home Basic previously installed). Sometimes when I boot in Ubuntu, following things happen: Ubuntu loading screen seems to freeze. Esc key doesn't show installation progress. Hard-drive led doesn't glow. caps lock and scroll lock keys keep blinking. I've to manually restart my laptop. On restart, Ubuntu loads normally. What can I do to recover from present situation?

  Emaroo is a free utility for browsing most recently used (MRU) lists of various applications. Quickly open files, jump to their folder in Windows Explorer, copy their path - all with just a few keystrokes or mouse clicks. tl;dr: Emaroo 1.4.0 is out, go download it on www.roland-weigelt.de/emaroo   Why Emaroo? Let me give you a few examples. Let’s assume you have pinned Emaroo to the first spot on the task bar so you can start it by hitting Win+1. To start one of the most recently used Visual Studio solutions you type Win+1, [maybe arrow key down a few times], Enter This means that you can start the most recent solution simply by Win+1, Enter What else? If you want to open an Explorer window at the file location of the solution, you type Ctrl+E instead of Enter.   If you know that the solution contains “foo” in its name, you can type “foo” to filter the list. Because this is not a general purpose search like e.g. the Search charm, but instead operates only on the MRU list of a single application, you usually have to type only a few characters until you can press Enter or Ctrl+E.   Ctrl+C copies the file path of the selected MRU item, Ctrl+Shift+C copies the directory If you have several versions of Visual Studio installed, the context menu lets you open a solution in a higher version.   Using the context menu, you can open a Visual Studio solution in Blend. So far I have only mentioned Visual Studio, but Emaroo knows about other applications, too. It remembers the last application you used, you can change between applications with the left/right arrow or accelerator keys. Press F1 or click the Emaroo icon (the tab to the right) for a quick reference. Which applications does Emaroo know about? Emaroo knows the MRU lists of Visual Studio 2008/2010/2012/2013 Expression Blend 4, Blend for Visual Studio 2012, Blend for Visual Studio 2013 Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2013 Microsoft Excel 2007/2010/2013 Microsoft PowerPoint 2007/2010/2013 Photoshop CS6 IrfanView (most recently used directories) Windows Explorer (directories most recently typed into the address bar) Applications that are not installed aren’t shown, of course. • Saving a list of points into a text file

  I recently posted a question about this, but was not really sure where to go. I've gotten some progress, and have generated some simple noise here: http://pastie.org/5408655 That works well enough for me, but I would really like to be able to save the points into an ascii text file. currently it's formatted so that something like this: http://pastie.org/5409311 would create a square. I need to save in this format with the points(and lines connecting them) generated in the method above. Essentially, I need to write the array of points created in the first example to a text file formatted like the second example.

  Alberto Ferrari wrote a very interesting white paper about DAX query plans. We published it on a page where we'll gather articles and tools about DAX query plans: http://www.sqlbi.com/topics/query-plans/I reviewed the paper and this is the result of many months of study - we know that we just scratched the surface of this topic, also because we still don't have enough information about internal behavior of many of the operators contained in a query plan. However, by reading the paper you will start reading a query plan and you will understand how it works the optimization found by Chris Webb one month ago to the events-in-progress scenario. The white paper also contains a more optimized query (10 time faster), even if the performance depends on data distribution and the best choice really depends on the data you have. Now you should be curious enough to read the paper until the end, because the more optimized query is the last example in the paper!
