  • Windows XP x64 virtual machine (VMWare ESX) using only 2 CPUs (out of 4)

    I just converted a physical Windows XP x64 machine with 4 CPUs to a VMWare virtual machine with 4CPUs (on a ESX server) using the VMWare Standalone Converter. Everything worked just great, except that the OS now seems to use only 2 CPUs (when 4 are installed, see the following image). This must be a Windows XP issue rather than a VMWare issue, but I can not really rule out any reason at this stage. What can I do?

  • What can an effective workflow for changing input methods be on Mac OS X?

    I switch between three languages input methods frequently, sometimes in the same typing session. The default shortcut on a Macintosh seems to be to set keyboard shortcuts for previous/next language (I hit opt-cmd-space to go to previous language) and if you're more than bi-lingual you have to cycle until you find the one for you. The ideal would be something like hitting fn-e for English, fn-j for Japanese and fn-g for German, but anything better than the current state would be a great improvement.

  • How to get GlassFish to respond over IPv6?

    I've got GlassFish v3 installed on a Windows 2008R2 server, and it works great over IPv4, but is not even listening on IPv6. The wiki says "Yes it supports IPv6" but doesn't go into any detail on how to turn it on. Been flipping around in the admin pages, but I don't seen any options I recognize.

  • How to launch Google Chrome Application Shortcuts in Linux?

    I've got Chrome running on my Linux netbook, it's great and, unlike the Mac version, the 'Create Application Shortcut' option isn't greyed out. So I created one for Gmail. The 'applications' get stored at ~/.local/share/applications but I haven't managed to launch it yet. If I use Chrome in terminal $ google-chrome ~/.local/share/applications/google-application-reallylong-randomname.thing It opens the file in a new tab in Chrome and helpfully downloads it for me! Anyone got application shortcuts working in Linux?

  • How to block a specific site's directory in windows?

    How can I block a specific directory of a website as e.g. http://example.com/someSite unfortunately the hosts file is not an option since you can only block whole domains there and any "/" just destroys these rules. This is just for my personal protection against visiting some sites too often, while i still have to be able to get to the other sites of that domain (as e.g. example.com/someOtherSite) Would be great if someone knows a solution regarding this topic.

  • How can I stream my laptop's desktop to my iPad?

    I recently got a wireless PC controller, and now I enjoy games playing from my bed. However, I find it hard to correctly place my laptop so it's comfortable, and it would be great if there was a way to view my screen through my iPad, with minimal lag; so I could simply leave my laptop behind me or on the desk and view the game from the iPad.     I'm looking for a Mac application or an Web application to sync all my Facebook, LinkedIn, Gmail contacts and Mac OS X address book contacts in one place. At the same time, it would be great if it didn't create a bunch of duplicates. (PS: The default sync between gmail contacts and address book seems to only create duplicates and doesn't seem to really work well together). Does anyone have a solution?

  • How to prevent Vista from entering Sleep mode when certain conditions exist?

    Mainly, I would like to prevent my laptop from entering Sleep mode when I am playing music or streaming video. This is on my laptop, so another option that would work would be to prevent sleep mode whenever the laptop is plugged into my tv via HDMI (ie when HDMI port is in use). Or prevent sleep mode whenever there is audio playing.. I am soon upgrading to Windows 7, so solutions using 7 would be great also/instead. Thanks!

  • How much audio latency is noticeable by human brain?

    I am choosing a wireless headset for my PC (I hate cables) and am looking at Sennheiser RS 170 / 180. They supposedly sound great, however, there is a 25ms audio latency. I've heard that this is OK when watching TV or listening musing but is bad for games. The question is - has there been any research / hard data that would show how much of a delay is noticeable by human brain? 25ms doesn't sound like a lot but I may be wrong.

    In operation of a virtual Vmware or Hyper-V guest typically advice is given to defrag the host and virtual disk images so to result in improved performance. Something like a cmd: vmware-vdiskmanager -d <file.vmdk> works great. Yet I can't find any qualitive evidence that suggest defraging inside the guest VM improves performance. Does anyone have advice or evidence that doesn't come from a commercial defragger's whitepaper that suggests inside guest defragging helps?

    Now that routers are affordable, why should I build a network using Layer 2 switches, which degenerate to broadcasting under poor conditions, and not just use real routing at Layer 3? Edit: Got some great replies. Let me clarify the question: Of course, at the lowest level, you want to plug your end nodes into a switch, not a router (as demonstrated by AlReece). I'm referring to switches which are used to bridge traffic between segments - that is, switches connected to other switches.

My question is, will staying with a hosting company (namely, FatCow) be a complete disaster? Or is there an alternative?     I am looking for recommendations/links for a service that can give/assign me a phone number, have a recorded messages played when someone calls such as "press 1 for ..., press 2 for yyy etc" and then allow the caller to leave a message that is then emailed to the owner of the particular voicemail box. Google voice works for 1 mailbox only, but something like that with multiple mailboxes and multiple email addresses would be great.

  • Encrypt windows 8 file history

    File history is great but it saves your files on the external drive without any encryption and stores them using the exact same folder structure as the originals. If a bad guy gets his hands on the hard drive it could basically not be easier to get to your important files. Is there any way to encrypt the file history backup without breaking its functionality and without having to encrypt the original content itself? Thanks for your input!

It shows me the new email twice when notifying because it appears in both the inbox and All Mail folders.     In a batch file I need to extract a month, day, year from the date command. So I used the following, which essentially parses the Date command to extract its sub strings into a variable: set Day=%Date:~3,2% set Mth=%Date:~0,2% set Yr=%Date:~6,4% This is all great, but if I deploy this batch file to a machine with a different regional/country settings, it fails because month, day and year are in different locations. How can I extract month, day and year regardless of the date format?
